Hi everyone,
I need some advice from the community. I've had my XT925 for almost 2 years now, and in the last 6-8 moths I've been having weird battery drain that I couldn't solve. It started back on JB a while ago, and I thought "oh hell, KK is around the corner, it'll go away when I wipe everything". I was mistaken: I first tried the soak test leaked KK, and had the same erratic behaviour. And when the final release became available, I reflashed a full stock JB then flashed the zip OTA posted in general. I'm now on 4.4.2 stock moto kitkat.
I hardly last a full day, without a heavy usage. Many SMS (10-50), maybe 1-2 MMS, wifi ON most of the time at work, phone forced to 3G (4G cover is sporadic and when I turn it on I have a lot of 3g/4g switches). In the last week, I've frozen nearly every app I had with TB, to (hopefully) isolate the ones that drain too much battery. No luck so far.
Today I've decided to take a series of screenshot so maybe someone can help me troubleshoot what's wrong. They are attached to this post. I don't see anything out of the ordinary, but I'm no expert, so maybe someone can elighten me on any abnormality. I had roughly 40 min of vocal call today, which is a lot compared to my usual usage (average, maybe 3-5 min a day of voice call). This may have contributed to drain slightly more today, but there is not so much difference at the end of the day.
Basically, I recall lasting easily 1..5 days with the phone stock out of the box. Now, it's hard to reach >12h. I thought maybe the battery was dying (although *#*#4636#*#* said it was in good shape) so i replaced the battery by a brand new Moto one last week. There was absolutely no change at all.
So... here you go: any idea on what could be causing the drain ? Obviously I've cleared cache and wiped data many times already, and I'd like to avoid doing it again and again and again. Note that on the screenshot, there is many apparent time with bad signal. I have no idea why it shows like this since I'm always 3-4 bars at work. This is weird, and came with KK (JB sowed green signal at the same place).
Thanks for your help!
edit: just swa my thread title is missing a "d"... but cannot edit.

i would get gsam battery monitor with the root companion (second app) so you can get a better idea of whats going on. some shots of the app view screen, then change the view to view time held awake, then a couple shots of the details on the highest ones.
you can then get an app called unbounce that can limit the wakelocks, but it requires some reading so you dont break anything.
if you could take shots in English that would be great, otherwise i wont be able to help much with the diagnosis.
I was trying not to rely on wakelock limiting apps, as there's no reason for the drop from 1.5 (2) days to 12 h, with all custom apps frozen. I didn't know unbounce but the same goes for Greenify. I'll try the widget you mentioned and report back.
edit: yup i'll switch to english for the shots next time.
Oh and I forgot to mention this: from time to time, the drain won't be so apparent (e.g. 40% remaining after 12-15 h) and in a matter of minutes, the phone will drop to 10-12%. However it hasn't happened sicne I last turned off 4G, so maybe it was due to constant 3g/4g switches.

no doubt, in weak and especially no signal areas, it will burn through battery like crazy.
Here it as, after a nearly complete discharge. Phone unplugged around 10am, 12h15 later I'm at 10% remaining, with not so much usage. Screenshots are attached. What's weird is that in the last 1h30 the phone has been off wifi (slider "Wi-Fi" is off in settings) but battery status still shows a connected wifi. However you can clearly see a huge drain due to wifi being off and 3g being on (it's the only part of the day it's been using cellular data: I was at the restaurant therefore no wifi). Possibly locatin services using the wifi even though it was disabled ? Anyway I'm not sure this could cause such a quick drain...
edit: as far as the signal bar color in battery status, I've found that grey-yellow stands for "signal 3/4", so it's rather good (solid green is signal 4/4). So it's probbaly not that either...
Ooops forgot the "time held awake" shots. It's definitely Google services messing around, but what... (details of Google services in previous post)

some of those push the limits of what i would like to see personally, but none appear out of control to me.
im really not sure how you would go about taming some of that down though, without using a couple apps you dont want to use.
imo, you would need to control some of the wakelocks, and/or disable some of the receivers you done use.
the couple "nlp" wakelocks from google are going to account for a good bit of its waking. nlp is nothing more than google using your location information to build a database from it.
here is whats known about some of the more common offenders, and the testing results from limiting them.
That's what I feared... I'm usually not that bad with messing with the phone, and couldn't see anything obvious either. I've disabled "using wifi to locate" in wifi settings, I'll see how this drops the nlp wakelocks, for starters.
If anyone has a better idea, please don't hesitate

i have use quite a few of the more popular battery saving apps over the years. i just came across this one yesterday. its shaping up to be the best i have used to date. i wasnt using my phone except for a few minutes this morning, and it went 5 1/2 hours and was still @ 100%.
i also use greenify with root + exposed.
did you disable FAST DORMANCY? I have done it while on JB ? IT did not cause any prob.
Haven't disabled it, mostly because I've never been able to determine if it was being used by carriers in France or not. I've read somewhere that it wasn't, but the source was hardly documented. I've tried to disable it in JB however, and did not see any improvement.
Right now I've disabled Google Now and location history things. I'm trying to reduce the wakelocks as much as I can using settings available from stock rom (and understand at the same time what was causing them). Battery drain is still high, but I'm testing things every 10 min or so, so it's not really representative. I'll update here when I have a better idea of what's going on.
Another thing of interest is xposed with new module called Unbounce. There is a thread for it. All about minimizing wake locks
A few thoughts so far. I haven't tried Greenify or Unbounce yet, this will be the "final stage". For now I'm trying to minimize wakelocks as much as possible without installing third-party apps.
Here are a quick review of what I've found (NB: in the following I translated the menu names myself from french to english and didn't check their actual name... but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out which ones I'm referring to if the name is not exactly right):
1) Disabled Google Now and all "Google Location settings" (i.e. "Update location" and "Location history", found within "Google settings" in the drawer).
2) Set location settings to "minimize battery", that is with network and wi-fi.
3) In wi-fi advanced settings, disabled "search always available"
4) Locked the phone to 2G/3G only, because 4G coverage from my carrier (Free Mobile for the frenchies here ) is erratic at best, and caused many 3G/4G switches
5) Some "light" de-bloat (froze all Google apps I'm not using). At first I froze all my apps to mimick a fresh stock system, but there were really not that much difference.
Note that all the tests were ran (mostly) in the same location, on different days, so signal quality should be rather constant (and good) and therefore is not acting as a confounding factor in my tests.
Whats happening when 3G and Wi-Fi are both off ?
Obviously, disabling 3G and wifi gives a very good battery life. I'm talking about something like 2h screen-on and probably 30-40% after a full day (9am to midnight, roughly). I'll double check the exact values for this and update this post with a screenshot asap (= in the upcoming days). With this setting, wakelocks actually correspond to screen-on time. So it's probably the best one can achieve.
edit: 1h of voice communication, 1h15 of screen-on time, 10-15 sms, 1 received MMS (had to enable 3G a few seconds for that of course) => see Screenshot_2014-10-27-23-22-14.png
The decrease at the end corresponds to wifi+3G when I got back home and started using the phone "heavily". Roughly, 40% decrease in 12h. That is what I call a good battery life. Notice how the wakelocks closely match the screen on periods.
Whats happening when 3G is ON and Wi-Fi is OFF
We've discussed a bit the "fastdormancy" thing earlier here. Spending a whole day on 3G made the "modem fastdormancy" process drain a high share of battery (10-20% ? Can't remember exactly, but it was in the top-5 list of draining apps, and had a big wakelock time). Further proof that my carrier doesn't support it. I've therefore edited my build.prop to set
ro.mot.ds.fastdormancy.disable=true
Click to collapse
After that, the process was not found anymore in high-draining apps, and battery life was a little better (again, no values here, I'll update in a few days after I run the tests again and double-check everything).
Can't say much about Google location, but I'd say most requests were not executed.
Whats happening when 3G is OFF and Wi-Fi is ON
Wi-Fi at work did not cause any interesting drain. The phone sat there and was connected all day-long. There were probably a few Google requests to determine its location, with some nlpwakelock, but not really interesting.
What was really interesting was the behaviour outside my workplce (e.g. on the street). I have in my "known networks" some wi-fi hotspots (FreeWifi) that are enabled with my DSL provider: they provide me with codes from my contract that I can use in the street if any other of their customer has a wi-fi enabled on their modem (their is a dedicated SSID broadcasted from their modem). The phone connected automatically whenever it detected this SSID (which was... really often), but the captive portal (to enter credentials) was not filled, because the phone was in my pocket. This caused HUGE wakelocks and drained the battery incredibly fast. I'm talking about draining 50% in an hour or so. I could even feel the phone warming up in my pocket.
So, conclusion here: I think Wi-Fi could be a major cause of battery drain if you have some fav SSID that require credentials through a captive portal.
I'll update in a few days if I find anything else, and to add values to what i've stated here.
Hope that helps!

Hi,
I've got an HTC One S since a few weeks (got it with the 1.57 FW I think). It's a stock one, not from a carrier. No branding.
The battery life was great, 2 to 3 days with normal use.
But yesterday evening I proceeded to the OTA update and since then, trouble began
Battery life is much, much lower. After 12 hours standing on my desk in the office, I got 10% remaining!
Anytime I switch the screen ON, I see there is some data being sent (or received) because the "arrows" are full. If I check in system panel lite, there's always 1 or 2 kb/s of traffic.
Also, the phone is a bit warm, quite often.
Has anyone else noticed this? That's rather annoying :/
Could be faulty? I have the same phone with no carrier or branding and not had any problems at all.
Like faulty hardware? Seems unlikely to me since it worked well with 1.57. Also, sending data isn't hardware related
Here are some details.
In Mobile usage, just for today (less than 24h)
"Media" has used 13MB of background data
"Android OS" has used 5MB, also background
Android OS gives no more details. Media is told to include "Download manager" "DRM protected content storage" "Media storage" and "Downloads"
This sounds like a lot of background data :/
Try an app called Badass Battery monitor. It should tell you what's eating your battery.

I have to say, this phone, at least mines, seems to have a pretty bi polar battery. It's got a case of ADHD.
For example, just the other day, I had the phone fully charged when I awoke at 9am, after playing Temple Run, surfing the web, using GPS, streaming and listening to music, playing more Temple Run, fiddling around with the OS, checking emails, sending texts, talking on the phone a bit, downloading apps, with about 25-30% brightness, I ended up with 18% battery remaining after a good 11 hours of very heavy use. I was quite pleased, considering the inordinate amount of usage I had with the phone all day.
(BTW, I use Juice Defender, which has helped tons in reducing battery drainage for almost every phone I've owned in the past 3 months, including the One S)
Yesterday, I had the phone charged at 100% when I awoke at 9am, with a little bit of use, by 12am, I had 63% remaining, same brightness, but with much much less use then the day prior. By the time 3pm hit, I was at about 30%, and by 5pm, it was drained to 18%, mostly on standby. By my estimation, that's 8 hours of usage, same brightness levels as the day before, using Juice Defender, but with much much less fiddling around with pretty much everything on the device.
I went ahead and disabled Juice Defender today to see if it would make a difference, and the battery actually got a bit worse, so I went ahead and re-enabled it and it immediately improved.
So I'm a bit perplexed, I haven't gotten any official updates, still running on the original stock build, but ultimately, I guess this is what is too be expected with an early build. Hopefully future updates WILL fix these issues and not hinder them more. Granted it's still much better then my HTC Amaze and Galaxy Nexus, which drained 4% the moment I took them off charger.
Thanks for your input, I'll check again today how the phone goes.
I played with all the settings and menus yesterday, and found something strange. In the "downloads" app, there was a "system update" download. That's quite normal since I downloaded and applied the OTA the day before. But it was referred as "ongoing", like it was still downloading a part of the OTA zip file AFTER I applied it (and rebooted a couple of times)
In phone settings, about, updates, it was also written "ongoing"
Now this is over (I don't know why and how) and the network usage seems back to normal. I'll try today to see how the battery drain is
Anyway, it's s strange the phone was still downloading the update zip file after having applied it. AND that it was downloading it on the 3G at a very lowered bitrate (like background) while I downloaded it on the wifi the day before
Anyway...
The battery life of my One S seems to have declined as well since the update. Before the update my battery lasted 2 days easily with moderate usage. Now I have 20-30% left at the end of the day from a full charge since 9am. This is with very light usage (mostly on standby from 9 to 5).
I did turn on best wifi performance recently so I just to turned that off to see if it helps but I really doubt that.
Hello guys, I have same problem, but my phone wasting energy on "phone radio" process, just look at screens below. I really need help with this issue, because my battery draining very very
fast...

I had a similar problem a few days ago, using Lee´s ROM.
I noticed that the drain had something to do with autosync. As soon as I turned off autosync (leaving mobile internet on) drainage went back to normal.
I still don´t know what caused this since I only had the google account, weather and dropbox installed.
Anyway, after doing a fresh install, the problems seem to have gone.
Of course I can´t be completely certain of it until some more days of testing/usage.
I also noticed quite a few problems since the latest OTA update.
Not only does the battery drain fast, the phone also feels extremely hot when browsing on 3G.
The phone does cool down pretty quickly when turning off 3G but it feels like I burned my hands
Here are a few screenshots.

I also experienced weird things when connected to EDGE (2.75G).
3G (HSPA) coverage on BASE (KPN) sucks in Belgium
Look at the video below for more details.
Has anyone else experienced this yet?
http://youtu.be/3g8FLpWDAYM
I also contacted HTC about this issue and they recommended a hard reset.
Unfortunately this doesn't help at all, I still get these weird glitches
mattionline, can you get a logcat when the phone's doing this weird stuff? It looks like the Home button is being pressed repeatedly and if logcat confirms it then it's probably a hardware problem.

Do you need root to make a logcat ? My phone is not rooted and I'm not planning to do it. How can this be a hardware problem ? I never had this problem before. I'm sure that it's a software bug.

I just fixed someone else phone that had the exact same symptoms. In the end I narrowed down the problem to one of his weather apps.
He had a live wallpaper that reflected the current weather, weather on his lock screen and a beautiful widgets weather thing. I never did figure out exactly which one it was I just turned off all there and told him he was crazy.
I don't know if it's something "weather" related for you but it maybe it will help.

you don't need root, just enable usb debugging in development options and connect the phone to your pc. You need to have the android sdk installed.
Sup guys , some of you don't seem to realize that there are many reasons why your battery drains, what you might think is, "quickly". A few tips to keep minimal battery out put...1 keep brightness down, the screen itself sucks juice probably the most. 2 check your apps, some apps send and receive data and/or are kept running in the background. You might have to enable/disable setting on shove apps. 3 widgets, widgets like battery meters, CPU meters, things like this constantly refresh to keep real time info. That also eats up alot of juice . 4 Turn off WiFi or any other thing like that when your not using it. WiFi continually sucks nice. Lastly, invest in some app that will help you close apps. Basically, tweek everything you might think that the os can run without. The less your CPU has to do, the more juce you save.

This made me lol hard.
Best advice ever.
But yeah, on the 1.0 version of Leedroid I had quite some drain, too.
When I turned off autosync it went back to normale. I only had my google account, dropbox (with syncing off) and the weather thingy set up and never figured out which one was resposible.
After installing Lee´s 2.0 ROM everything is fine.
I suppose there really is something wrong with the autosync and maybe with the weather stuff in particular.
My problem didn't go away with stopping auto sync, even without it, I had a constant data flow
Anyway, I rebooted the phone twice and the issue was gone.
It happened again a few days later, after the phone did shut down because of low battery. I put it on charger and turned it on, then, I noticed the 3G arrows were always on. After I unplugged it from the charger the battery went down in 10 hours. After a reboot, problem gone...
Since then, nothing...
And please note than when the problem is here, it's media and android os using a lot of data
I have been having one S problems too - I am on my second phone after the first one became reliably unresponsive every time I turned on mobile data. More relevant to this discussion, my battery died shockingly last night. Normally it drains at a few percent an hour when I am not using it (i.e. when asleep!) but I woke this morning to find it totally dead - that is 30% plus gone in 5 hours without it being in use.
Hey,
3 days ago my mobile Internet flatrate ran out, I don't really think that this has anything to do with this but I try to provide as much information as I can.
My Nexus S was bought December last year and never really had any problems.
But now for 3 Days I have to charge that thing every damn day and the battery only lasts 18-19 hours instead of 2+ days. I haven't really used the phone in the last 3 days except from recieving calls and using whatsapp.
I have also not installed any apps in this time.
Here a screenshot from my current battery live. (Seems to be always awake)
(ICS 4.0.4 Rooted, Stock Kernel, Stock Launcher.)
Thank you guys in advance!

Yeah. Those two are probably trying to "phone home" constantly, thus causing a drain. That may be what the issue is. From the looks of it, it looks like your signal isn't stellar either. How good is Whatsapp over EDGE speeds? The 3g connection just might not be strong enough, trying to search for a signal and also draining the battery.

Your guess is quite good, because in my room and ONLY in my room there are some severe problems with network connectivity for almost everyone.
(But battery life was good just a few days ago?)
I currently have no mobile Internet and only use WLAN. Just disconnected phone from charger and will now see how it runs.

If you have "no mobile Internet" and WiFi is off (as in screenshot), this is your issue. The android processes are trying to re-connect keeping your phone from deep sleep. In Mobile Network Settings, disable Data. Turn on WiFi, and set Keep WiFi on during sleep to Always. When you are out of WiFi range, disable background sync.
I've noticed something on 4.0, at least in my case. Huge wake locks for no reason in airplane mode. The phone home thing is most likely the cause. Google must have changed something in the way their apps operate because this never happened in gingerbread for me.
Well, so I have observed it a little more and battery usage by google services is now up to 70%.
Thank you for the suggestions I'll try now.
But why the hell does this issue come just now? I have 4.0.4 since it came out and the issue just appeared about 5 days ago.
I wish I knew. I've got mine in airplane mode now, but no SIM in it. I've got a G2 as my daily driver now. The Nexus hasn't had any more of the airplane mode wakeups strangely enough though. Wish I knew what was actually causing mine.

So to report back again, I tried SpookyTunes suggestion for one cycle of battery life.
Then after recharging I went into the app management and force-stopped the google services framework and deleted the cached files afterwards.
So now I'm back to 3% battery usage (from Google Services Framework) for the last hour.
I would give it more time to see what it uses over the course of the day.

Here's a screenshot of my battery life now.

any news????
Hi guys,
I am hoping someone may notice what's going on with my device... I am at a loss. Attaching all screenshots and dump file from BetterBatteryStats (may need to open in Wordpad for the spacing work).
To summarize, my battery drain is very inconsistent. Some days it lasts a long time, 2-3 hrs of screen time, can stay in standby for over 2 days. And then some days it drains very quickly, like right now - it drops by 3% every time I basically turn on the screen to check e-mail/messages. I think we can all agree that 4 hrs of standby and 15 mins of screen usage should not use 50% of the battery.
I have tried two different units (swapped thinking my battery was faulty), and the issue persists - so I think it has to be something related to my software setup. I am running the AT&T LTE stock phone, 1.85 firmware. I have tried doing the full factory reset (clearing all settings/apps/storage), and cycling the battery.
Some folks have mentioned that my drain seems to begin when I hit an area with low/no signal (I take the subway to work in the morning), and then persists - as if something is trying to sync/connect somewhere, but can't... so it keeps looping and draining the battery.
My autosync is only on for Gmail, Google calendar (not contacts), and Weather (every 2 hrs only). Phone is not overly hot, battery is at 86 degrees right now. My brightness is at 40%.
If someone has any ideas, please share - I am at a loss, I don't know what to do... but battery life has got to be better than this, at least in terms of consistency.
Thanks so much.
Little to no signal is a battery killer.
Right, but the phone drains like crazy after the signal is regained. It doesn't drain much while there is no signal. Besides, what are people supposed to do when they lose signal? Restart the phone afterwards or lose all battery?
Also, some days it works just fine (and I still take subway to work on those days and lose signal) - so not consistent. I don't think it's simply the fact that no signal kills my battery in this case.

But OP is getting huge drops in the battery level when network signal is green (full signal strength); and also screen mostly off. Which is very odd . . .
Sounds like there are other folks experiencing this issue, related to signal drop in LTE (riding a subway, etc.):

Hi guys,
I am hoping someone may notice what's going on with my device...

Step 1: Remove sense.
Step 2: Proceed to experience the best battery life I have ever seen on an Android device.
If you do not want to remove sense then you need to take a very close look at your apps because something in the apps is responsible. I personally think its HTC sync or some other rediculous service that comes preinstalled on the phone. Something is trying to sync or communicate and is hanging.
Like I said, get rid of sense and save yourself the hassle. Nova Prime + AOKP = the best mobile operating system known to man.
I am a bit new when it comes to Android and all the various ROMs out there. To remove Sense, do I need to unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM? Or can I install an alternate launcher (like Nova Prime)?
Thanks!

To remove sense you'll need to install a custom ROM such as AOKP or cm9. Those will remove sense. You can find AOKP in the general section under the title "AOKP lives!!" and cm9 under developement. They both have flaws such as the camcorder not working, but considering the flaws that sense has out of the box, you're much better off in my opinion. cm9 and AOKP will get infinitely better in the coming weeks as they iron out the bugs. Sense is disgusting bloatware that is piled on top of stock android. It takes a ton of resources and makes even the simplest tasks a chore. Once you go to an AOSP ROM I don't think you'll ever go back. I can multi task away for hours and come back to another app that wasn't closed out of memory. Try that with sense.
To install a ROM you'll need to:
Root
unlock bootloader
Install a custom recovery
Backup your entire ROM with that recovery
Flash whatever you want
All of the directions of how to do this are in the dev section. Let me know if you have any questions.
Installing a AOSP ROM (such as CM9 and AOKP) will completely "desense" your phone.
Installing a ROM based on stock (like all of the CleanROMs) will get rid of most of the HTC stuff but Sense will still be there.
Thank you seh and rohan, I will give that a try. Will read up on it and let you know if I have questions.

Seriously just go check it out in the dev section. If you are unsure or have any questions at all come back here and let me know. I can walk you through all of it. Don't be afraid of ruining your device or anything like that. This stuff is all one click these days and isn't bad at all. I can literally walk you through every step if needed. Just check it out yourself though, I bet you'll be fine
Thanks again. Reading through the dev section now. Seems relatively straight-forward... just need to get home to get this stuff going.

FYI, the root process failed for me 2 times before it took. Just keep trying and it will go. Once you are rooted, you'll never have to plug your phone into a computer again. You can do anything from the device, no questions asked.

Here is what I'd do before installing custom ROMs etc. (Not that I am discouraging you against that but, if your device is indeed faulty then unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty and HTC may not replace/fix it.) And, you'd have wasted countless hours trying to fix the issue with software that was hardware to begin with.
1. Run the battery test *#*#3424#*#*, press 'Accept', Go to More and run 'Battery Test'. Follow instructions in there. If the battery isn't faulty i.e. after one hour the battery level is still greater than 85% (The function test shows a different number) your battery is fine. Else, ask HTC to fix it.
2. If your phone passes the battery test; turn on 'Airplane mode' when you get into an area with spotty signal. This should address your suspicion regarding that.
3. Display: display seems to be draining the most battery - doesn't mean it actual does but, at least the phone seems to think it is. Try reducing brightness to around 20% for a day - I know it is too dim but, it will eliminate that possibility.
4. If you have facebook installed - turn off all syncing. Especially the HTC sense social plugin always tries to update it from facebook.
Based on the screenshots, it seems that the battery drains very quickly when you have the screen on, even with good signal strength.
Lastly, as an alternative to point 2 above, turn on airplane mode for 1 hour and turn off sync, remove all widgets from home screen(s) and just use the phone on wifi with stock browser - see if it drops as quickly or not.
Having gone through it, I understand how frustrating this is. In the end, I rooted and completely desensed my phone (only keeping essentials - basically recreating clean rom). I do not use Auto Sync but manually engage it every few hours to update everything. And, keep the brightness to 30% most of the time.
Hope this helps, good luck.
john_tillman, thanks for the suggestions as well!
1. I did the battery test, finished at 92%. So I think I'm OK there.
2. I will try doing airplane mode before subway rides going forward, will see if that helps.
3. Something is funky with the way the battery meter app is measuring this. Basically the battery doesn't move - and then when I unlock the phone, it drops like 3%. So my suspicion is that I'm losing battery, it just doesn't get updated until I fire up the screen.
4. Yep, all syncing is turned off. I only have Gmail/Gcalendar syncing now.
I've been playing around with the phone(s) earlier as well - keeping it in airplane mode and just watching movies/etc. makes it last forever. It really does seem to be something with the signal and perhaps something in Sense.
Have you tried CleanRom? I do like the visuals in Sense, would be sad to go to bone-stock ICS... but battery is more important.

I experience the same thing. After my subway commute and after I regain signal, battery doesn't drop until a couple of seconds after o turn on my screen, but it drops like 3%.

I was able to go from stock 1.85, to sick-sense ROM in a matter of minutes yesterday. I was nervous at first even though I know what I was doing, although all was good after following the instructions given on each step of the process. I haven't really bricked a phone before because this was my first smartphone ever, But I believe that the worse thing that can happen is soft bricking your phone, which can be resolved by RUU. I hope this helps you out.
Regarding OP, I had MUCH MUCH more battery life compared to bone stock. I used to get 3 hrs screen on time with 20% brightness, now Im at 4-5 on 50% under similar usage. One last thing to note; LTE, Auto sync, GPS, and low reception, are the most battery eating thing on the phone assuming you don't have rouge apps (wakelocks).

GPS has no affect on battery life unless it is being actually used. Its not going to drain battery just by being enabled. Auto sync has minimal impact on battery as well, unless you are getting 5 emails every 1 minute. Push is always more battery friendly than pull. (unless there is heavy traffic)
About the low reception thing. While it does indeed affect battery life when the phone is constantly looking for service, it is not as bad as you would think. I sit in an area at my work that has about 1 bar of service. The phone will go from 1-0 bars to searching, about every 5 minutes or so ALL day long for 8 hours. To see the impact this had on my battery life, I did some experimenting. I basically ran my phone in airplane mode for 3 days and then compared and averaged the results over 3 days of normal use with the phone having bad service.
I lost 8% more over an 8 hour work day.

No, I didn't try clean ROM. But, I took the change log from one of the clean ROMs and deleted most of the apps that can be safely deleted. So, I do sort of have a clean rom and it works fine so far - in terms of battery life. When I used to boot with stock rom, I used to have 150 - 170 mb free ram. With the clean up that I performed - now, free RAM is 270 - 300 mb after a reboot.
Try disabling LTE and see how your battery does.
Click on mobile network settings, and choose gsm/hspa auto.
Has anyone else experienced any issues like this? Over the past week my Nexus 5 has been going through about 60% battery over night. In the past I would at most use 5-7%. If you tap on the graph itself you'll be able to see if the phone was awake frequently or if it was losing signal, etc...
If you're seeing that the phone was awake often, try BetterBatteryStats to see what is keeping your phone awake.
Wakelock Detector is another app to try and pin down the problem.
Also, maybe try wifi overnight instead of LTE to see if that might be the issue.
its your signal quality killing your battery. you have phone idle and cell standby taking most your battery.

What is especially strange is it appears you're on WiFi, and yet both the voice and data connection seem to be causing the largest drain here.
Tap the graph so we can get an idea of what the awake times and signal strength was like.
I have a similar gripe and I pinned mine down to stupid photos uploading overnight via wifi and a bunch of other wifi related crap....pretty much network things causing battery drain. also the auto update's killing it for google play stuff.
I found that switching to dalvik and back to ART [which i was on] helped a bit though i supposed there's a process running somewhere in the background that's buggy...here's hoping 4.4.x fixes it
Switch to ART cleared it for me

I also saw the same. Turning off functions, etc. had no effect, but switching form Dalvik to ART did. I'm guessing that the change probably cleared something in the OS that was actually causing the problem. Note that the reported sources of battery usage are almost the same in both images, even though battery usage rate is vastly different.
I've attached two screen shots before and after the runtime switch. The red arrow on the before image is when I made the runtime change.

This is a shot from last night. I went to bed with about 50% battery life and woke up with a dead phone. Looks like cell signal maybe...
I am already using ART, but maybe I should switch back to dalvik and back to art like someone suggested earlier.
I've noticed more battery drain as well as reduced cell signal. My phone is losing connection in areas where I'd previously have 1-2 bars. I was thinking T-Mobile was changing things on their towers, but I'm starting to see other Nexus 5 owners complaining about it as well. Did they update something in the background on our phones?
You REALLY need to get Gsam and take some screens from it after a night. The stock battery usage screen shots say very little of use.
Otherwise we're are all just guessing here.

It's worth a shot, and I, for one, am curious to see if it helps.
FWIW, I just noticed that my battery usage is increasing significantly again. So, I may try the same thing if it persists.
I'd say there is definitely a bug somewhere, possibly interacting with an app or a subset of apps. Are you using Tasker, by any chance?

Obvious culprits are WiFi and radio. Check in gsam (might be too late if you charged) for kernel Wakelocks. Or try wakelock detector app.
You could have a WiFi issue caused by other devices on your network. Would have to search on that for causes and cures. I'm not sure. I only know its been an issue.
And you appear to have no radio signal at all. If you go in to radio screen from main gsam screen, it will tell you your time searching for signal. That can destroy battery life.
It doesn't seem to he an app. Or general held awake time...as you have hardly any.
Putting phone in airplane mode over night would prove its WiFi or radio.
---------- Post added at 09:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 AM ----------
If a night of airplane mode is no better, then its a rogue app. That you'd need to track down. Process of elimination style.
But its probably either WiFi or radio signal. I guess if you have location service on, it could be adding to the trouble.
Turning off WiFi would show if its WiFi....or radio. But with very poor radio signal....I know you're battery will take a beating anyway.

What's puzzling to me is that it was not an issue until a week ago, then converting to ART made it go away temporarily.
My radio signal is poor, but it's always that way at home. I definitely plan to see what airplane mode does. Will report results.
Thanks for your help.

These images are from last night. I went to sleep with about 55 percent and woke up with 31%. The screenies are from betterbatterystats. Maybe you guys see something...
Definitely radio in my case
kj2112, you were right on. :good:
Running in airplane mode removes all serious battery drain on my Nexus 5. If I turn WIFI on, there is only minor battery usage. I've installed OpenSignal and will try monitoring radio reception vs. battery drain.
I'm still puzzled by the sudden onset (could be a problem with my nearest tower, I suppose), and the fact that switching from Dalvik to ART dramatically improved battery life for a few days. That's hard to link to the poor cell signal.
I'm still suspicious that there is a software component, that may or may not be interacting with my cell signal strength.
Follup up / more info
Based on posts on other forums, I tried excluding LTE from my preferred network types, and my battery usage improved dramatically. If I choose 3G, signal strength is 2-3 bars. 2G gives me 4-5 bars. With LTE I get 0-1 bars - mostly 0. On 2G my battery life is the best I've ever seen
My suspicion is that the sudden change I saw was caused by a change in the way the radio software selects network speed options. It appears that if the preferred network type selected is LTE, the phone now will expend maximum effort continually to connect to LTE, even if there is no useful signal available. Before the change, it's likely that a stronger LTE signal was required before the phone would attempt a connection.
I'm not sure if the OS determines where that set point is located or if it's something the carrier can control. If it's the carrier then maybe the Nexus 5 has a radio that isn't as efficient as other phones, and the current algorithm is pegged to the best case phone.
If anyone knows how to adjust the conditions for attempting to connect to LTE or has any ides about who does control it, I'd definitely like to know. For now, I set my phone to 2G or 3G when I'm in a poor LTE reception area (which with T-Mobile is most of the time). That actually works okay for me, but I doubt it's a solution for everyone.
Anyone else experiencing this? Atrocious battery life post upgrade. Nothing odd running in background, program or processes. Rebooted phone. Started the day at 100% with moderate usage at best, I'm already down to 19%.
Battery life is relatively unchanged in mine after the mm update. Easily make it through the entire day with 50-60% battery life remaining. I disabled a whole bunch of the bloatware (and will be removing it entirely when I decide to root my phone) and battery life is wonderful.

Mine has been fine, slightly better with doze/disabling packages. Do a back up through Smart Switch and try a factory reset. I do that every time I update.
I'm envious of your successes. I'll give it a bit to see if it stabilizes, if not I'll use SS and reset/restore.

I will recommend "Package Disabler Pro" to disable bloatware. Costs but is worth the cash.
Mine went through on Thursday and so far battery appears ok.
I have noticed however the lighting is messed up all over. Play books night light feature is broken and dims it to unrecognizable levels. I have to go into the settings again when in the book and disable auto lighting and manually raise it. When back at the list of books screen, the brightness drops to nearly off again.
Also it seems the notifications when listening to music are much louder. I could listen to mp3s via poweramp while reading a book and get an SMS text and itd be a light little sound. this is playing louder than my music and very annoying.
My batter life was horrible after the upgrade. Here's what I did to fix it.
1) Wifi sleep policy - Changed that to "While Charging" (big difference noticed after that)
2) Fully charged phone then let it run down to 0 (must let it power itself off)
3) Wifi Scanning has been moved under Location setting. Go to Location -> Improve accuracy, make sure Wi-Fi scanning is off.
Batter life is awesome now.

1: Apps/sync will use mobile data as priority if this is done while waiting to connect to wifi. In turn, using even more battery if an app/sync wakes the phone switching between networks.
2: This is damaging to Li batteries. To extend the life of your battery, it is better to keep it topped above 80% and cool(not very common in real world applications). These aren't Ni batteries, long gone are the days of "memory discharging".
If you don't need notifications at night, use airplane mode. I miss Xposed, Autotasker, and Amplify(formerly Bounce)... Greenify is a good alt atm
Note: Sometimes even Play service updates will introduce bugs and or "retarded" policies that will destroy the battery, especially the "Now" systems. It can happen at the most random times as well and not at all most. Every now and then the fat man will get stuck in the tube.
All thoughtful replies. I don't have Location on ever, unless I'm using Waze, so that's a non-issue for me. Allowing WiFi to sleep when the phone is off, while I'm only connecting via WiFi, effectively makes my smartphone a dumb phone, until I wake it up, right? The fact that I need to start changing around "normal" settings on my phone, to lesser benefiting ones, to get back to the battery life I had before I installed MM is pretty silly. I've been hoping things would settle down, but they don't. I can try using SmartSwitch later to see if that helps.

No, it will connect LTE and then switch to wifi. LTE use more battery life, the network switch uses a bit, then finally you are into wifi. If your phone wakelocks or alarms(location ping, play service ping, etc) it will use more battery than wifi always on. Personally, I've tested both to make sure a wifi wakelock bug hasn't been introduced as I do with every update and play service update(it does happen and it's horrible drain). I see more savings always on.
If you meant you disable mobile network, yes, dumb phone, text and call. Also, I disable mobile usually always as I piggyback off work cell at work, and always wifi at home. I only toggle mobile data when necessary.

I believe this is what most people encounter. Most dont have unlimited data and use WIFI always. I think by default, WIFI is set to always on, even when phone screen is off. WIFI will rape your battery. I did my own tests with wifi vs 4g and just by using my 4g all the time, battery quadrupled. Many argued that WIFI uses less battery, and i have the best of the best wifi router/modem/isp with 5ghz ac excellent coverage. Not the case for me. I have unlimited and just stick with that now. Battery life on MM has been great for me.
My battery life is 4x better. I couldn't be happier.

Anyone else experiencing this? Atrocious battery life post upgrade. Nothing odd running in background, program or processes. Rebooted phone. Started the day at 100% with moderate usage at best, I'm already down to 19%.

Not that I know of.
Though they JUST released Marshmallow. Verizon is probably still patting themselves on the back even though they released several months late. What I'm waiting for is a miraculous root.
I never use my phone the same amount every day, so it's hard to say exactly what kind of battery life I get, but I have noticed that it has improved. I would usually be near 15% by 10pm after coming off charger at 6am. Now I float around 25% at 10pm. So it seems to be better, even if only slightly so.
I see a minimal improvement, but I was doing what I could without root prior to sleep unnecessary crap.
Weird, when thye MM updated happened, up until the last two days, I was getting much better battery life under MM. But the past few days my battery life has declined dramatically to the point that I am not getting through a day of minimal use. Screen only 2%, Android OS consuming 76%.
I just fiddled with settings (Changed Wifi sleep to While Charging; Turned off wifi scanning). I am going to also try a reboot to see if that helps. I swear it started just about the time I started looking at Nexus 6p replacements).
Update, rebooting, and removing a few more useless apps and battery life has returned.
