Art verse delvik - AT&T LG G3

Here's my question. I'm rooted now and I wanted to know if I should be on art or stay with delvik?
Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk

depends on your needs. some things still dont work with art. only things i know dont work on art is xposed and i think screen cast with chromecast app. however i use art rather than dalvik because it is smoother for me.

[Q] ART, Lock screen music widget, and App drawer icons.

Hey guys, this is my first post ever here. I have a couple of issues with my nexus 5.
First of all, I have the 32gb, rooted nexus 5, and I am running ElementalX kernel and TWRP on it.
I observed that I cannot switch to ART for some reason. When I choose to do so, the phone just reboots and still runs Dalvik. Does this happen to someone else too?
Secondly, the music player widget on the lock screen doesn't show up most of the time when I'm using my earphones. Any fix for that?
Lastly, the icons in my app drawer automatically get arranged in a 5x6 grid, making them smaller. I don''t know why it's doing that.
I am also running Xposed module with GravityBox, LMT launcher, and a couple of ad blockers.
Please help!

I see. Thanks.

What features are unique to any custom rom that can't be found on Xposed?

My old Nexus 4 and current Nexus 7 have had a number roms flashed to them, but I've remained stock on my Nexus 5 because Xposed Frameworks has come a long way.
I haven't felt the need to flash a rom other than habit so I've stayed stock (except for trying out PA for about a day). Is Xposed missing something that can only be found on a rom or is there really just isn't much of a need to flash custom roms anymore?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
There certainly isn't much need anymore. Its all personal taste.

I'm not sure that everything is available with Xposed modules.
For instance: blur lockscreen, toggles modifications (swipe to switch, screenshot delay, toggle style, toggles per row, text color...), Enable persistence, ribbons, tons of animations, Active & lockscreen notifications, Halo, the great Theme Provider...
But a xposed module can do something that a custom rom can't so I use both.
BTW I'm fond of themes so custom roms are mandatory.

Blur lockscreen, animations. Toggles per rom, text color, the theme provider are something that xposed can do
Ribbons, active disply and lockscreen notifications are features that can be installed from the play store

I know xtheme doesn't work good, but hkTheme manager has-been updated to v6 and is working great for me, no lag at all,but i guess you are right that's why I'm still using custom roms

Toggle style is unique to roms. XuiMod for Xposed handles animations. Halo has a mod that works well with the app Flotifications. I think the theme chooser, then, is the only thing truly unique, though with Xblast you can theme your phone a bit and Unicon has icons taken care of.

That's kind of the point of Xposed, though. It's adding just what you want so, while we may have to install this or that from the Play Store or through a mod, it means we can also leave out a lot of things we don't use or need.

I wonder if Xposed will be around much longer. Google is moving from DEV to ART and xposed runs only on DEV. From the posts it sounds like a total rebuild which they didn't sound like was going to happen. Xposed is cool and I would like to find an alternative that runs on ART. If Xposed support ART I would be even happier.

[Q] Dalvik vs ART

With the ability to switch between these two in KitKat, I'm wondering if anyone has, and how that affect performance & battery life.
ART for the win!!!

ive tried art and love it!! it could all be on my head but i swear my machines have never been more responsive!! there are some limitations though that you need to take into account. not all apps are upgraded to work with art as a matter of fact i love to use xposed installer to customize my roms and i found that when the exposed installer is installed your machine wont convert to art . so far thats the only app that i found will actually not let your phone/tablet change over. i dont know if its actually xposed or something else but anyway.. on my RAZR HD ART is noticeably faster. Just go to dev options close to the bottom you will find the runtime option choose art and wait for the phone to reboot and update your apps. if you find that the apps you use most often dont work you can alway go back to dalvik the same way you changed it to art. not sure if this is any help at all i tend to ramble at times. anyway yeah give it a shot and let us know what you think/
Yeah, I saw that in developer options, I was just going to try it, but I thought I'd see what others have tried. Guess I 'll give it a shot.

Just be careful. Not all apps work with ART. If you use the Xposed framework, it will switch you back to Dalvik.
Also, once you switch to ART, it changes your data partition, so if you decide to go back to a different kernel (for unlocked bootloaders that is), you MUST switch back to Dalvik and then reformat your data partition.
It seems the next release of Android has ART as the default committed in the source code, so it looks like Google is ready to go "prime time" with ART in the next release. I'm only holding back on it due to two apps: CoPilot USA currently does not support ART so I have to stay on Dalvik for the time being. Also, as mentioned, I use the Xposed framework with Greenify and GravityBox, so until Xposed works with ART, I'll be staying on the Dalvik for the time being.
No known ETA for when Xposed or CoPilot will work with ART.
There are more apps out there that don't work with ART. You can go to the compatibility list to see what is/isn't working:
http://click.xda-developers.com/api...velopersxda-developers&txt=compatibility list
But, if you have no apps that require Dalvik, I say switch to ART. It definitely is smoother and faster than Dalvik since it precompiles the apps upon installation rather than using JIT (under Dalvik) when you first launch it, so start-up times seem quicker under ART and the over-all responsiveness seems much snappier.

[Q] different between ART & Dalvik

Hello,
I just wanted to know,
ART & Dalvik with one is the better??
ART is better in terms of performance and battery than Dalvik but does not support apps like Xposed installer. If you do not use it it's better to switch to ART.

[Nook HD+][EMMC][CM10.1.3]Tweaked Yellow Kernel 4.2.2 ROM V1.2 [F2FS]

This is basically the same as my PINGUYS CARBON JB 4.2.2 ROM ported to the Yellow Kernel ROM base.
All I did was OptiPNG, Zipped the apks and patched services.jar with "Ultimate Jar Power Tools" to improve multitasking. Also stripped out the libs in the apks and added them to system/libs.
Added my little tweaks to it. Replaced the launcher with the Google Now launcher. I added the Lollipop keyboard (from the Google Play Store) and the Sony Walkman music player with the UPNP/DLNA Media Server. Also added a custom sound engine that will greatly improve the sound quality.
MX Player is included and has working AC3 sound using a custom Arm v7-Neon codec.
There is a load of extra fonts added and I built in a modified version of flash that has Hulu support..
KSM and zRAM are enabled by default with custom values.
zRAM size is set to 154.8 MB/18.75% of total RAM and KSM pages_to_scan to 1536 and sleep_millisecs to 6000 reducing CPU cycles and saving battery power.
DOWNLOADIn the attachments I have added:
Xposed GEL Settings
Xposed Installer
AdAway
Changed the base to 10.1.3 Yellow Kernel as this is easier to work with.
On first boot it will hot-reboot.
@PMikeP,
"I don't see a way to change grid size, add screens, change Home screen etc. on the launcher. It's not in my settings when I click the 3 vertical dots.
Similarly, I don't see a way to disable the Search bar/disable Search."
I don't think Google Now / Google Launcher / GEL let's you change any of that.
But, I *think* you can install XPosed and then use the GEL Tweaks module. I used that 2 or 3 devices ago, but haven't used XPosed in a while.
---------- Post added at 09:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:19 PM ----------
So, let me ask this,
If I have a previous 10.1.3 rom and make a back up through TWRP,
Can I do a complete wipe, flash this and then restore data from my other backup, or will that mess with the tweaks on this rom?

Hi FirePsych: Good idea not to clutter up Jon's thread with comments about Pinguy's.
Okay on the new Google launcher. If that's the way it is, I'll stay with Jon's. I'm not about to install Xposed on my aviation tablet.
I tried uninstalling the search with Titanium, but doing that hung the ROM on reboot.
I don't know the answer to your last question. Of course you could give it try. This ROM does seem to do some preprocessing at boot, per my problem with Link2SD hanging the boot.

Why not just install Nova or Apex Launcher?
Or do what FirePsych said. Install Xposed GEL Settings.
Link2SD issues is probably due to system/etc/init.d/08setperm. Delete the file and see if that sorts it. But the way it sounds is you gave the ROM 3 minutes then removed it, so giving this advice is probably pointless.

If you was running 10.1.3 you can dirty flash this. You may have to go to apps and clean data for "contacts" and "contacts storage" (settings>apps>all and scroll to "contacts" open it and choose "clear data" - then go back to "contacts storage" and do the same thing.) if you get the android.process.acore error.
I tried a dirty flash and it didn't seem happy. Tried my idea and it was a little better, but since I had time, i did a full wipe again, flashed it and let Google restore my aops. So far, so good

Thanks for the input. I could try another launcher, but never have had to before. If I do, can I then disable voice search, and how?
I will try your suggestion for Link2SD.
I'm sorry that you sound upset. But actually, I gave the ROM 3 hours. As I use my tablet for aviation moving maps in the cockpit, I need something that works 100%. (And so I'm not going to hack it with Xposed.)
Jon's meets that requirement. Since you had put so much work into yours, I thought I would try it before I go flying again. Nothing personal.

Sorry my bad. Wasn't in a good mood that day.
GmsCore
QuickSearchBox
Google Now Launcher
Are all needed for the Google Now Launcher to work. Removing any of them will break the home launcher. It is why it hung when you removed QuickSearchBox. Without it the system had no home launcher to boot into.
As Google Now is a huge reason why I love (and many others) Jellybean I made sure it was working in this ROM.
If you are not a fan of Google Now, install a different launcher first before removing it. This way the ROM won't hang.

Thanks. It occurred to me later that there are philosophical differences between your ROM & Jon's.
Jon's is a spartan ROM, vanilla and free of Google stuff. (By design.)
Yours is more an "everyman's" ROM, built w/ the latest launcher and complete with mods for entertainment. (Ability to play Hulu Plus, better audio, etc.)
For my purposes in the cockpit, I need a bare bones ROM like Jon's. (I flash a stripped down version of GAPPS just so two of my aviation apps will install, and then I disable Play & Frameworks. Very lean. Very little running in the background while flying.)
If I knew enough how to do it, it would be interesting to take Jon's 10.1 ROM and fold only your performance enhancing features into it (i.e., keeping it Google free), to see the improvement and to see how stable it is. (That would also give an apples to apples comparison.) But since I don't know how, I'm content to wait for some other enterprising dev to do it someday.
Oh this seems very promising. I use mine for university. So a lot of reading, some surfing and mailing but also for entertainment as well. Most shows I watch on my nook so I will give your ROM probably a try starting this weekend even though I am not keen on Google now but I use NovaLauncher anyway.
Nice to see that there is still some development with this device.

f2fs. But you can use ext4 if you like.
Possible bug: .MKV files with ac3 codec can't be played with MX player, vlc or BS player.
The Rom overall seems to be running smooth but unfortunaly not very liquid. At least not AS auch AS pure yellow kernel Rom. It's not too distracting though.

Really? Anyway you maybe able to share the video giving you problems? Every video I have is MKV with DTS or AC3 sound and they all work fine.
Well I won't share the video due to legal rights but write the given codec information: H264 MPEG-4 AVC , A52 Audio aka AC3 48khz 448 KB/s.
Another issue seems to be playing flash videos in Browser. They won't start. For example:
http://gizmodo.com/sonys-robotic-dogs-are-dying-a-slow-and-heartbreaking-d-1712160637
It started one time but as I watched it through I couldnt replay it. AS I try it now it won't even load. Also no possibility for fullscreen view while I do have thatat this page with my Smartphone.
It you cant recreate these issues I do a clean install again but maybe you do.
Bzw any recommendations for governors and i/o?

The linked flash video is working fine here. The fullscreen button doesn't show up but if you tap in the lower right corner it will go full screen.
As for the governors and i/o, the default settings are the best.
Updated the ROM. It's a lot smoother now.
Hi, I'm currently on PAC Kitkat 4.4.4 Rom. My Nook HD+ is suffering from 'Ghost touches', where touch inputs automatically registered without me touching the screen. I want to change to a faster and smoother Rom. My only uses for the Nook HD+ are Comic, epub, pdf reading and Watching 1080p movies using MXplayer. I'm confused between this rom and amace's CM 12.1 rom. In your opinion, which will be better for my use?
