We recently switch to a WPA2 Enterprise system at work with multiple WAP using the same SSID. Looks like the Shield tablet has the poor wifi roaming problem with certain Android devices. Other folks with Kitkat tablets do not seem to have this problem. I know that that the Shield Portable has had this problem on and off. I have tried Wifi Roaming Fix with no luck. Do folks have any other ideas?
Thanks,

Okay folks got a bit of a strage development that I could use some help with.
As we all know, Android does not currently support Wifi proxy servers, at least it has no way to access the settings. I live on campus and the wifi is piped through a proxy server to the internet and I found the lack of wireless to be quite annoying (especially the hole it was burning in my pocket!)
Anyway, I had bought a wireless router to have internet all around my apartment. The network is hidden and my HTC Desire wasn't connecting to it. I eventually found out that this was because the network was braodcasting in mixed b/g/n mode. I changed it to b/g only and the phone connected.
I hadn't really expected it to connect to the internet because there was still no proxy set up but to my surprise it did! I checked my data counters and only the Wifi one was going up. The network my router is connected to uses the same proxy as the campus wireless so there is definately a proxy.
An even stranger development is the fact that since then, when I connect directly to the campus wireless network (not to my router) the internet still works. I keep checking the data counters and its not using up any 3G data. I checked my IP address online and it corresponds to the campus IP address. I also switched off the wifi and checked again and the IP changed to my cell provider.
I haven't tried connecting to a different wireless network since then and I didn't change any settings. I'm using an unrooted HTC Desire with stock ROMs. I had downloaded WifiAce but I since removed that and the proxy still works.
So what I'm wondering is, can anybody confirm this or give any thoughts on how this is working? Does anyone also know if the data counters available on the market acurately track data usage or do they simply assume that if the wifi is connected that the phone is downloading via wireless and not cell.
If anyone has any thoughts on this or could go out of their way to try and confirm it I'd be grateful.
(update) I found that it doesn't work on one of the networks, the oldest one on campus. Not sure why this is yet
You are correct. I found out this a long time ago. It also happens with some wireless MAC Laptops. You have to define the broadcasting channel.
Stupid Question, I'm Sure...

I wonder if you could explain what "defining the broadcasting channel" means...in case I occasion similar difficulties joining a public wifi network?
It's a dumb question, I'm sure...but I've never actually owned a router.
Between my dearly-departed, slightly hacked XV6800, followed by Tetherberry on my 9530...Wireless Tether on my CM7 Droid (only in a pinch) and the Clear Wireless dongle on my laptop (shared via Connectify), I think I'm missing several years of typical AP experience.
I'm having a strange problem lately with the Wi-Fi. I was at work where I've previously set up the wi-fi details, but now it says the network is not in range. The laptop I have sees and connects to it just fine so the connection details haven't changed, and the signal strength is 5 bars on the laptop, so it's still in range.
Well failing that, I connected the laptop to a wired connection and created an Ad-Hoc network to share the internet from. The latest honeycomb 3.2 update added support for Ad-Hoc and the network was seen on the tablet, I typed in the password, but it won't connect. It sees it as full strength, attempts to connect, and then the network suddenly loses all strength gives me a "-1 mbps" link speed and seems to get stuck in an infinite loop of trying to connect.
This same issue happened at a friends place where she has your typical household wi-fi but I thought it was just a fluke. I still get the "-1 mbps" link speed and lack of connectivity. The strange thing is it still works at home and at another friends place.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
yeah i had the same problem. i got Linksys router on WPA\WPA2 personal. But at the same time i changed ISP...150mb/s down and up bebeh! ...so i used the router they gave me instead.
not sure linksys and/or the WPA/WPA2 personal is the problem. But i dont have the problem anymore.

Yeah, it's weird. For the Ad-Hoc connection I was able to change the security type to basic WEP and it worked fine after that. Previous it was WPA2 and not working.
I'm wondering if the latest firmware update has anything to do with this?
OK, I've searched Google for weeks and searched the Xoom Q&A, but don't find anything that addresses my problem.
I have a network with one router connected directly to the cable modem. It is called Jaytrenthome. Connected to that via cable is another router in AP mode called JText.
My Xoom connects successfully to both, but only shows blue bars when connected to the JText AP. When connected to Jaytrenthome, it shows Wifi connection, but grey icon indicating no internet connection.
As the routers are on different sides of the house, I need to use both depending on the side of the house I am on.
details about the routers.
Jaytrenthome
WD Mynet N900
2.4 Ghz, WPA2 Personal, 802.11 B+G+N, no selection found to pick AES or TKIP
DHCP active on this router
JText
Netgear WNDR3300
2.4 Ghz, WPA2 PSK (AES), 802.11 N, DHCP turned off, IP address provided by Jaytrenthome
Xoom Details
Xoom Stringray (4G)
Running Baked Stingray rom BB-8
Same problems experienced with EOS and one of the CM variants
4G works flawlessly.
Things I have tried so far.
1. Changing Xoom time update setting to not update automatically.
2. Changing WIFI settings on Jaytrenthome to WPA, WPA2, WEP, etc... with no luck.
3. Turning on the 5 Ghz band of WIFI on Jaytrenthome.
4. Assigning a fixed IP in the Xoom WIFI settings
5. Praying....
Can one of you help from a similar experience?
Thank you!
Sad face...
>70 views and no one has an idea to help me with this.
Thank you for looking, though.

Are you using the same SSID and password for both the routers?
My Xoom did not like it when I had a router and AP broadcasting using the same SSID (and same password) in my house, although my issue wasn't exactly the same as what you're experiencing. For me, the Xoom had a really hard time staying connected to either of the units if the signal strengths were very similar. The signals seem to fluctuate quite a bit in my house, with the strongest signal bouncing back and forth between the two routers, so I ended up with a lot of disconnects and sometimes a long time to authenticate. I ended up moving one of the routers to a better place in the house and eliminating the second one. I'm now getting more reliable connections, particularly if I use the 5 GHz signal. Ultimately I still think there is something interfering with my 2.4GHz signal though, but I haven't had a lot of time to troubleshoot further....
Fixed!

I had the ssid set differently, but the same password for each. Your post got me to try changing the password so each ssid uses a different one and voilĂ .
Woo, hoo!
i have a problem with my wifi connection. my droid maxx always keeps loosing the connection to my wlan network and have to reconnect after that. this happens every few minutes.
my wifi network is protected with wpa2 and mac filtering is off. the network strength should be strong enough. i am using my maxx in europe, could it be that it maybe has problems with the european wifi channels (in usa as i know there are only 11 or so and in europe we have 13) ?

Did the wifi lose connection while you're using the phone or everytime the screen goes off? Also a good idea to check your router dhcp lease period. Do you other devices connecting through wifi having the same issue?
I only notices this while i am using my phone and my phone is the only device with this problem. Dhcp is set to auto
What build/system version are you running?
i am on the latest stock 4.4.4
I'm guessing that is build 23.3.24 and not 21.11.21 then. Also, what brand and model number is your wireless router?
as i life in germany i am using a "speedport w921v" router. i looked at the internet and it seems that the entire 900 series has wifi issues like disconnecting between devices...
Ah, I would then either wait for a possible firmware upgrade or replace the router sadly.
You could also try disabling the 5Ghz signal (if possible) to see if that helps, or reset the router.
Check the router manufacturer page for firmware update. If its a known issue, there's probably a patch for it.
I have two wifi APs with the same SSID and it will stick to one of them with next-to-useless connection while standing near the other one. which would have much better connection.
This works fine on my Nexus 9 tablet and even better on my iPad and my wifes iPhone..
I tried some possible workarounds like Always allow wi-fi roam scans but I didn't see any effect.
This fix for SG3 might work but i havn't rooted.
Even more solution suggestions
Doesn't this bother anyone else ?
wifi has a bug in 6.X and its been talked about before.
my problem some times when i want to connect to another wifi it connects for a 1 sec and then drops it
i turn off wifi and back on and it will connect
i'm trying the app "Wifi roaming fix" but i think it causes the wifi to disconnect for a couple of seconds when it switches.
Strange that this seems to be of no interest to anyone. Is there indeed nobody who is using one or more WLAN APs in addition to his/her WLAN router? I can't believe that.
I have two APs (Main router and 2nd router as AP) but not for more coverage, my main router pushes 5GHz wifi, the second AP pushes 2.4GHz for older clients that can't connect to 5GHz
The 5GHz router is placed on a wall in the middle of the house and the entire house has great coverage so no need for more APs
I have more APs in my house with OpenWRT and 802.11r aka Fast Roaming configured and roaming between all my APs is working perfectly with all my devices.
Note 10.1 2014 Wifi, S7 Exynos and all other also.
With APs configured as "normal" ap with the same SSID and key i had the same issue as you mentioned.
I think your phone dont know that it could roam between your two APs.
If you could not run OpenWRT on your APs for 802.11r, you could try to enable WDS on both APs even if your APs connected by wire.
