Hey,
Yesterday my pants got wet a little bit and the phone was in my pocket. Immediately I took it out and saw it wasn't wet.
I got home, connected to the charger and went to sleep. When I woke up I noticed then phone wasn't charged at all.
During the day I noticed other problems: The phone discharges faster than before, my PC won't recognize the phone via USB and charging the phone is problematic since I have to "play" with the charger (the battery discharges even when the charger is plugged in).
My question is what should I do next? Should I stop using it completely? I mean, ,maybe it got wet, but I didn't drop it into the toilet or a puddle.

The worst thing to do with a wet phone is allow electricity to run through it, be that charging or simply leaving it on. Water is conductive so as well as erosion, its also bridging connections between components that shouldn't be connected - causing short circuits.

Chances are the damage is done. Spending money trying to fix a water damaged device often ends up in wasted money, as you fix one thing only to find something else doesn't work.
Unfortunately, it's probably best to move on. Sorry. ?
I opened the phone and there is not sign of corrosion. It's probably just the charging port (coincidence?)

I usually don't respond to wet phone threads because they're usually toast if they got wet. But you're not going to see corrosion. Like rootsu said water is a good conductor of electricity and components that shouldn't be connected get connected when they get wet. It may be the charging port and then again out may not be. Best to chalk it up to a bad accident and start saving for new device

sustained some water damage on my nexus s.... so now the phone keeps switching back and forth from USB/charging to discharging. In the process, as it would when you plug it in, the screen would turns on.. This is terribly annoying as the phone never sleeps! is there anything out there that can remedy this??!?!? like turning off the USB, or an app that puts it to sleep and leaves it asleep no matter what??
or is there a command that tells the phone to turn on i can intercept?
edit* new rom didnt work so its not a runaway app.

I dropped my iPhone down the toilet once, I had a similar problem I turned it off and gave it time to dry, it would be a good idea to put the phone in a bag/cup of rice because it draws moisture from the phone, I gave it a couple of days and it was fine.

I've read cat litter works well too...
NEVER use a blow dryer, it can blow the moisture in deeper.

Plus, a hot blow dryer will fry the components
Let it sit in a bowl of rice for a day or 2.....that will soak up all the moisture.....if that dnt work idk wat will

Ironically, the worst thing you can do in this situation is also the first thing that people seem to want to try: Turn the damn thing on. If there is water on any electrical component when you turn it on, that component will fry. For good. Do as others have said and as soon as physically possible put it in a bag of rice. Leave it for a few days. It'll be fine as long as you don't turn it on before its dried out.
Just wanted to repeat how important it is to take and leave the battery out whenever you have water issues. I've left my Sony ericcson phone soaked in a glass of water for four hours before (from snoozing) . Woke up, pulled battery out. Baked parts under low temp for 1 hour and all was dandy. Although you may want to stick to the rice method.

A while ago i received my N5 and i really enjoyed it! 2 days, i drop the thing in the toilet. :crying:
Okay so my insurance wont cover it and the phone has dryed in Rice and i followed all the advices that were online.
Tho i couldnt remove the batteri and i know this is a crucial point since the current+water will destroy the circuits.
Now my phone either wont start, or sometimes it will try to boot showing the google logo and then crashing (it cant enter the OS).
Is it worth trying to repair the thing? I dont think it will be a problem for me to change a circuit board og replace another part, but since i dont have any experience with phones i dont know what part i should start with.
The phone costs 580 dollars here in Denmark where i live.
Is it worth it ?

You can open it up, get some rubbing alcohol and submerge the board into the rubbing alcohol. Use a soft tooth brush and scrub the board. Usually the board gets corrosion/dirt from the water. Once thoroughly clean put a blow dryer to it (use medium to no heat. DO NOT PUT THE BATTERY IN THE ALCOHOL. ONLY THE BOARD!
I've tried this before and it worked like a charm when my Galaxy Nexus had water damage.

As soon as you dropped it in water you should have turned it off and left it off for days and possibly even took a hairdryer to it or let it sit in front of the heat vent.
Number one mistake is trying to turn it on. If anybody else drops the nexus in water. Because it has no removable battery cover. Rice won't do the trick. It would take way too long and the water would have already rusted the metal components and trashed all the pop connectors. If you drop the phone is water. Quickly take the entire phone apart. Than put all the pieces in rice. That will allow the rice to actually absorb the left over water. YouTube "nexus 5 tear down". Its always a good thing to know how to do this.

I just finished assembling the Nexus again and im a very happy man!
After disasembling the phone i found that the top board was very teared by the water and it was clear how some of the sockets had poor or no connection.
I used pure alchol (Dunno what its called in english) and a small toothbrush to clean the board. I dryed the board with a hair dryer on cold setting to avoid over heating the CPU parts. Now the phone works! and it doesnt look like it has any pearment faults or flaws. Even the display is normal and all my previous settings and the OS was intact. Thanks for the help everybody! and yes the best thing to do is remove the powersource and dry the boards individually if exposed to water

Hey guys. I followed the instructions and have gotten my phone to power. Problem is when it goes from the power up screen that say "Google" to the colored balls, the balls freeze and it goes back to "Google" and freezing there. Any ideas on what I can do to get it to boot?
I just need it to boot long enough to retrieve my pictures and this hot chick's number I got right before the phone was dropped in the pool. Thanks.
edit: When I hold Volume Down/Power, I can get it to the bootloader. Anything I can do from here to salvage my stuff? I'm not familiar with bootloader options. Plugged into my computer, I can hear my PC make the noise as though it's connected which typically then leads to the phone's drive being accessible on the computer however it then immediately makes the noise of the phone being disconnected.
I believe I am having the same problem as you. I briefly dropped it into a creek for no more than a few seconds. That was enough to make the display unresponsive to touch. I was able to power down and quickly did so.
Unfortunately I wasn't near any rice immediately (motorcycle) so I put the phone in my mesh jacket in 100F weather and hoped for the best. I left it off at this point. When I got home I turned it back on (stupid I know) and the N5 didn't boot, only stopped at "Google" boot. I powered down the phone and rebooted, this time it worked. A quick checkup showed the external speaker didn't work for Play music, but did work for T-mobile visual voicemail. Also, the earpiece didn't work when I attempted to make calls.
At this point I realize I probably screwed up the phone big time. Once I realized not all components were working I put the phone in a ziplock bag with brown rice new from the store. I guess I'll let it sit for 48 hours and then attempt again. If it doesn't work, I'll attempt taking the phone apart and cleaning each part. And I'm really only going to attempt that because this phone isn't even paid off!!
These phones need to be made tougher! I am losing hope that there's any chance of my phone surviving at this point.

I dropped my nexus 5 in the pool while I was on vacation. When i came home i clean all the parts with rubbing alcohol, my phone worked! A day later i tried again but my phone froze on the start-up screen (with the magical floaty balls) and i haven't been able to turn on my phone since i got it to work. Hi guyz,
I need some help, lately my nexus 5 was been water damaged. I immediately follow OuncE718 suggestion but I still experiencing problem. When I press on the phone I can feel the vibration but Google-boot logo will not display and it will only display a white-dim light in the bottom part of the screen. I tried to connect it in a Windows computer it will be recognised as a Nexus 5 phone. Does it mean I had to replace my LCD.?

Who knows what damage did the water do? If the corrosion sets in, your device will be hosed for sure.
It's really a fools errand to fix water damaged phones as no one can be sure the extent of the damage.
If you take it to a service centre, they'll most probably replace the lcd + mobo which will cost a bomb.

If you buy a new LCD, how will you know the Motherboard still works? Then what if you have to buy new motherboard?
Cut your losses. Replace the whole phone. Then get insurance

Spending money on a water damaged device is usually money wasted. Cause there's usually more things wrecked you find out along the way.
Save the money to go towards a new device.
I had the same problem, I used all the methods that I've read with no solution, my last hope is that the battery got damaged, is there a chance that maybe the battery is the problem? I can get a replacement for 20 dollars, but what do you think? thanks

I wish I wasn't here under these circumstances, but yesterday my phone got drenched by the faucet when I accidentally dropped it in the sink. I turned it off right away and tried to dry it by blowing out all the holes/buttons/etc. with canned air. then (maybe stupidly) I turned the phone back on and used it the rest of the day, not really noticing that it wasn't charging when I plugged it in until later when the battery got very low and I plugged it in again and noticed that the charging symbol didn't appear.
Ultimately, what I found DID work, (at least temporarily, sometimes it still stops charging) was turning the phone off, then plugging it in, then turning it back on . When I did this, usb (and wireless) charging work, as well as the USB connection for getting files off the phone on my computer.
It's a bit odd that this is what worked, but so far, it seems to. I'm just not quite sure if there's anything else I can do other than maybe send the phone to LG for repair, or find a local shop that might be cheaper...
Just looking for any suggestions or information anyone may have to help me fix this. thanks in advance!

You should have not used the phone but put it turned off in a bowl of uncooked rice for a few days. Optional also removed the back and the battery if possible. You will have corrossion now and maybe worse electrical damage.

Yeah, I recognize that it was a bad idea... but there's not much I can do about that now. I'm just trying to figure out what my best course of action going forward is.

Try to remove the back and battery and place it in a bowl of uncooked rice asap for 2-3 days, this will limit the damage. Your warranty will also be voided i`am afraid as the moisture indicators are colored now.

what do you think the chances of the moisture indicators NOT being colored would be?
I had the phone inside a bumper case which covers the sides of the phone and the back. Some water got inside the case, but maybe not enough to wet the indicators.. I'd hate to open the phone and then realize they weren't colored. I hate opening phones if possible, but that'd be the only way to know for sure , I guess...
I'm working on getting my hands on a back up phone to use currently , but I hate to see the condition of this one get worse... (my nexus 4 that I was going to use as a backup hasn't wanted to power on in a couple months after I botched Rom flashing attempt and subsequent failure to accept a charge)

Water goes through the tiniest cracks and openings so i guess the indicators are colored. Only one sure way to find out and that is looking inside the phone. Look on YouTube for a Nexus 5 iFixit dissasembly video.
Opening up the phone doesn't really void the warranty. Breaking something while opening it does. You still had the headphone jack and the usb port open right? That means water got in and tripped the sensors. This is pretty much guaranteed. IMO, those sensors are too sensitive. Just using the phone in a humid place (bathroom while shower is running) trips them.
If everything works fine just try a wireless charger

The fact that your charging doesn't work reliably anymore probably means the moisture indicators would be coloured... I've had phones where the water didn't damage it at all and they still were

I bought a damaged nexus 5 off of kijiji that had a shattered screen. I bought the phone to fix, but realized that the phone does not power on at all. There is no response from the phone at all. No charging LED, no vibration, or any other signs of life.
The phone came with the box and charger so i tried leaving it on charge for a few hours hoping that it was just the battery that went dead. Unfortunately this was not the case and the phone still doesnt turn on. I popped open the back cover looking for any visible damage on the phone, but it doesnt look like there is anything wrong. The liquid damage indicators have not been triggered (still completely white) and i do not see any corrosion on the inside which i guess rules out liquid damage.
I then thought that it could possibly be the charging circuit from the micro usb so i then tried with a qi wireless charger. The wireless charger doesnt even detect that a phone is placed on it when the nexus 5 is on it.
At this point i have no idea what is wrong with the phone and feel like i just bought an expensive paper weight . I dont really want to shell out the $120 for a full screen assembly if the phone doesnt work at all.
Anyone have any ideas?

also see if you can get into download mode by holding the up volume key and plugging the USB lead in while attatched to a running pc

I left it to charge overnight and still no signs of life. I did notice if you put the phone up to your ear when it's charging you can hear a pulsating noise. Not sure if that helps at all.
I will try the download mode thing. Also I have a Usb jig from my s2 days. Will it work with this phone?

As far as i know from previous phones i owned, the liquid marks should show red/pink X marks, those get washed out in liquid damage scenarios. So if you ask me, the white indicators are suspicious. (But i might be wrong of course).

We from my experience the indicators are white and they turn red/pink when exposed to liquid so I'm pretty sure it's fine.

This damn phone keeps telling me it has moisture and won't charge. Hasn't gotten wet in weeks. Really annoying having to keep cleaning the port had this happen on my s7 toward the end before i traded it in. Any one else having constant issues with this?
You don't live in a cold or humid place do you? Could be picking up moisture from condensation. Have you gotten the port wet previously?
Also you mention cleaning the port, what are you using to clean it and how well of a job are you doing? I mean are we talking about a couple minutes making sure its thoroughly clean/dust and debris free or are we talking about a 2 second blow on the charge port and you're done?

Had the same issue and only a factory reset solved the problem. I used a blow dryer and it didn't help.
Best to clean your port with alcohol swabs. Gets the dirt out really well and dries up water stuck in there.

I've never had issues with other phones, so i doubt it's where I live. And I've been cleaning them with some cotton and even a blow dryer. Works fine for a bit but then goes back to messing up.
You say in your opening post that your phone hasnt got wet "in weeks" which leads me to believe that you did get it wet at some point? The phone is supposed to be water resistant (not waterproof) so its possible some water HAS affected your device. If not water then it might be a false positive from something else in your charge port.
Forget the dryer, try using a toothpick or some compressed (canned) air to get the port nice and cleaned out of any dust or debris.
Id say if you're still having the issue even after a good cleaning then your phone might be cooked buddy. Might be worth a shot to factory reset and see if the problems persist but other than that you might not have a choice but to get it repaired or replaced if possible.
This is defiantly a software issue, my device has never been near water and in the last week it's throwing moisture in port, a quick dey with a dryer and then rebooting and then plugging the sub lead in once it's booted works fine.
If guess the moisture sensitivity thing is either way to sensitive or does not clear after the slotted time anymore.
My port is now spotless after a good Hoover out and compressed air and a q tip soaked with IPA and around 15 mins of re drying, unplugging and re plugging a few times throws the error every single time and simply holding the device with a finger near the port can trigger the notification after a few mins.
I have been able to replicate this 2 times now and will continue to I'm also trying to find out what service throws this and if there are any tweekable variables for it if any.
Make sure your charger isn't wet. I once spilled water on my old charger connection. Luckily it was unplugged. Soaked it in alcohol and let it dry for a few days and now it works fine. Worse comes to worse, use wireless charging until you find a solution

I have this after my phone has been in my running arm-band for an hour.
Don't worry 'bout it.....I dodn't do anything and after 10 mins after taking it out of running arm-band, message goes away.

My phone started doing this over last few days also. Never been near water, always kept dry. Got to be a software issue, quite common issue if you search the web.
It's really annoying!

Guessing you missed the part where I said it hasn't gotten wet in weeks. Ended up exchanging the phone because problem wouldn't go away

I've noticed something with mine doing it and I finally connected the dots. I'll put my pinky under my phone as a support for when I am holding it and I've noticed that sensor is sensitive enough to detect the moisture from my body even though there is barely anything there. My pinky would essentially rest on the charging port covering it and I did it without thinking.
When I changed my habit all is my moisture messages went away that I thought were "random".

With tmobile. Warranty exchanges are $5. And probably a refurbed. Don't know, don't really care as long as it works
I got the same issue after exosing it to salt water, basically all I did was got some splash on the phone. I used wireless charging most of the time anyway but it's a bit annoying. Read something about salt water moisture is different so I used a syringe with tap water, sprayed on the port about 3-4x and 5 hrs laters the message disappeared. It might not work for all but at least for me this did the trick. Haven't seen the message for about a week now.
Yeah I second this... it's the dissolved salt on the interior. I cleaned it with fresh water and message went away

Had this yesterday for a few hours without the phone getting wet at all. Rebooted and message still there, switched off the phone and plugged in the charger and it charged left it like that for a few min and switched the phone back on. The moisture message didn't come back anymore.

Well, you are nuts accepting a refurb.
I got in touch with Samsung via the phone and they told me themselves, I have a 2 year warranty with Samsung as standard in the UK.....they arranged a courier to pick up my phone from my house and sent me a BRAND new one.
Warranty dude....Warranty!
