Greetings all,
This is my first post here so to start with an intro: I'm not a Dev, just a user trying to understand how things work (or why they don't).
In this case, I'm looking for some info on the "true" GPS or GNSS chipset used by Android smartphone makers, vs. Apple iPhone series.
I've googled and looked at many "TearDown" reports on both but it remains obscure to me.
My setup is still rather uncommon, I admit: I drive a Tesla Model S with a nasty windshield optimized for heat and IR reflection (seems it's a double window with some alloy in between) and as a result, EVERY single Android phone I've tried (Samsung S4 Mini, Mega 6.3, LG G2 Mini) fail miserably vs. an iPhone 4 or 4S, not to mention a quick test with a 5S.
Every Android says: "no GPS reception" like 75% of time, wherever close to the windshield I place it.
While every iPhone, even placed on the passenger seat, like 1m away from windshield, will be on easy mode with both Google Maps or Waze (I use it in FR because it's the only one to show speed-traps by the meter range; one trap avoided pays the phone here...).
Do you know by any chance the type of GPS/GNSS that Apple is using on their iPhone ?
And what Android phone maker would use the same -or up to performance- ?
So I can order it.
Best regards,
T.P.
Hi,
Here would be the section to ask about that,

Good luck!
Thank you. Thread closed.

I'm looking for a low budget Android phone for a close friend of mine.
I was thinking of getting her a HTC Wildfire, but i wanted to hear your opinion first
The phone has to be an Android one, be compatible with as many apps on the Android market as possible (im saying that because i've heard that some apps require a specific resolution to run), and be "nice 'n' cute" looking (meaning smaller than 4.3 inch screen and be as thin as possible) and have camera with flash. GPS, Wifi and stuff like that are always welcome
PS: I would also add that i need the phone to be as flexible as possible, like flashing new roms, but this is xda... i doubt i had to include that
thanks for the reply mate. The blade does look like a great device, but i searched for the SAT score of the device and its 1.35 W/kg
also... it turns out that it has to have a camera with flash (sorry i didn't mention. had no idea lol)
The Wildfire is a good choice. Android on a budget and plenty of community support.
Hi Guys,
I'm am almost a complete newbie in terms of a "programming level", but have been able to convert a couple of old phones (HTC) to android previously with the tutorials and great work done on this forum.
For all the interest, ideas and effort put into this website in making all our phone's much more user friendly, I find it hard to believe that no one has taken advantage of the new Android powered head units available..... Has anyone gotten onto this type of thing?
I have purchased an chinese, Android 2.3 powered head unit and for $400, it has more function than a $1400 commercial head unit (such as Alpine, sony, JVC etc.). It does have a typical couple of bugs being a chinese import unit, as it simply has not had enough beta testing, but overall is not too bad.
This is the unit here:
(look up "Roaddroid" on ebay, google, chinavision)
EDIT: Dammit - Noobs can't post links - try: w w w . c h i n a v a s i o n . c o m / d i j 6 /
I have been trying to install some applications etc onto here with some success, but not hugely overall as much as I had hoped. Unfortunately my current knowledge on Android programming puts me at a disadvantage.
95% of us would drive cars in this forum; and being able to customize, enhance and improve our own car stereo into a more user friendly multimedia GPS unit would be awesome....
Are there any interested people or does anyone from this forum know people that are already doing?
You should have just used a standalone speaker powered by microSD card.

I'm totally interested. Stay away from Parrot's offering. Catastrophe. I too am looking into the Chinese option. Makes perfect sense to have a car sstereo with a OS.
Search these forums for "android stereo"
Search these forums for android car stereo. I have started a thread about an android head unit that I currently own and like a lot.
Hi XDA, I have been browsing though the posts here for a few days now, and eventually decided to ask for advice. There is way too much content for me to cover on my own.
I'm planning on getting a high-end tablet, which will mostly be used for gaming&reading, as an "extra screen" for when I am working/coding on my laptop, and want to have some extra help/tutorials/breaks without having to switch windows, for delivering presentations and taking notes, and as remote desktop to run scripts. I used to game a lot, but now, due to the lack of time and room, I only play on my PS Vita, so looking forward to my favourite games (like Baldur's Gate) on a tab. Which screen ratio works best for games?
The tablets I am considering: Galaxy Tab S (8 or 10), S2 (8 or 10), Sony Xperias (Z2/4 and Z3). Whichever I get, it will be a significant spending, so I am trying to figure out which of the tablets have the best customer support and the fewest potential/reported issues, on average (well, S2 is probably not the best one to mention here as it is not widely available yet). Also, the longest realistic battery life would be great, I got my laptop for its ~20h battery life and now I am spoiled : ( Oh, and I will probably end up rooting the device, just most likely not during the first few weeks of use, as that will also be my first : D
I pick my laptops based on type and number of issues users report on fora, and how those are handled, and it always worked great. However, this will be my first tablet, so I do not know to evaluate tablet-related issues.
Any help from experienced users would be greatly appreciated : )

Hello!
i currently own an iphone 6 και and am looking to swap it for an android device-sick of ios(i previously owned 4s,5,6).
The android i am looking for must meet the below criteria with order of importance :
-good battery life
-good display
-good camera
-fast
-θpreferably with on screen buttons
-good sound quality with headphones
-somewhat decent support (not the htc type-oh here is 1 update, thats it )
phones i loved so far but cannot decide on them are :
-note 4(since note 5 wont be coming to eu), but it is already over 1 year old, so its updaes should stop after android 6.0
-nexus 6...man oh man i really really love that one but as it turns out, it bends with almost non existent effort ( youtube is filled with videos crushing it bare handed like its a candy bar)
-lg g4 very nice and fluid experience , good camera but the battery life is truly-hard to believe-kind of bad
Please help me escape the walled garden of apple, and guide me..devices nowadays are very expensive to just go see-n-choose..also exchanging devices from seller is a no-go where i live (say e.g. i return a lg g4 because it doesnt work for me).
Thanks, you guys!
Hello.
You should take a look at this thread. It should have all the information you are looking for.
You should also read this. It's a sticky right at the top of this forum. You have been a member since 2010, and have over 1000 posts. You should know to post in the proper forums.
XDA Assist isn't a place to go shopping, it's a place to get guidance to helpful forums/threads for users that haven't been able to find them on their own.
I'm looking for an Android phone, which fulfils all the following expectations:
Can be rooted and the bootloader can be unlocked [may require manual unlocking]
at least 5" display [may be a little less but not much]
fluidly running Android 5 (may be unofficial but stable) Very likely upgrades to newer Android versions.
And as many as possible from the following ones [assume they're equally important]
Slide-out QWERTY keyboard available. May use BT, NFC, I2C but should be a slide-out. May be be attachable, may be an extra accessory
Drivers decent enough, so as to be able to set up some alternate OS with libhybris.
Easy to disassemble and replace broken parts, especially the broken screen
A notification LED or an AMOLED display (both appreciated but not required)
At least 16G of built-in space (32G appreciated)
Price is an important factor for me. But I use phones for a very long time, (have used my Nokia N900 for 5 years now) so I may treat the phone as a longer-term investment.
I'll probably be spending much time in the terminal, hence I care about the hardware keyboard. I'm a hacker soul I'll probably be using the Debian chroot, ssh, vnc. Linux user.
I don't really care that much about the looks of the phone My phones fall a lot on the floor, so I'm not for an ultrafragile phone.
I need a decent camera (my current 5MP/720p N900 is ok. I don't count the megapixels, more interested in overall quality). Must be a phone.
I'm a Google-skepticist, so have nothing against it shipping Cyanogen, AOSP, etc as long as the functionality remains the same.
I don't do selfies, don't care about the front camera at all.
I know about Fairphone2 which fulfils everything but the hardware keyboard (it was mentioned as a possible extension but nothing real appeared yet). And is quite expensive (525€, plus accessories). Is there any chance it gets cheaper during the next year?
Would you suggest anything? Feel free to ask about my attitude to some functionality, which I care about and which not at all.
Thanks!
Hi,
There's a dedicated thread for such questions here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620179
Many opinions to be had there, so I'll close this thread. :good:
