[Q] Unlocking problems for the bootloader - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

I am trying to unlock my photons Q bootloader on the Motosite which is well known. I check it now a million times if I have a typo and I Dont.
The button with the "request unlock key " comes up, I hit it, and didnt recieve any mail. And I started last week doing it.
The Photon q has a GSM mod done by the almighty CornholioGSM, and I am using a connection from Germany. Since it is a Sprint photon, I thought that it might be discarded, because the ip it comes from is german ?..
Would be great to have someone telling me if there is another solution to this ..
I tried to flash with the locked bootloader the recovery, but get the message "invalid image size" on CWM or TWR.
I hope this Q is not too noob for all of you.

I would try motochopper or whatever the exploit was to unlock without Moto's assistance.
It may have been unlocked previously, (relocked for warranty swap) in which case I'm not sure you can use the site to re-unlock the device...

First of all thank your for your answer ! Most likely you are right. Now my Q, I did read Motochopper just install SU and also gives root, but without touching the bootloader. Dont I need to unlock the bootloader if I want to install Cyanogen or any other Mod ? Maybe I understood that wrong.

If you're wanting to install TWRP, I think they have a new app now... TWRP Manager?
I've always installed recovery using fastboot on the Q, so I'm not very familiar with the apps .

I tried the TWRP Manager, the manager shows me success for installing the TWRP recovery, but I cant access it. It switches back into Fastboot telling me flash failure. Actually I would like to install CM11. Well I will try to install the latest nightly and see whats happening. Hopefully it doesnt brick. :silly: Thanks for your help, I will let you know about success or fail.

You need to install some sort of custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM.
Open Recovery or TWRP are both fine. CWM is really old for our device, I can't recommend it.

So yesterday Motorola send me the messages with the codes which I apllied for almost 2 weeks ago... I guess the next days will arrive more.
Ofc I tried to unlock and it worked as expected. Now with fastboot flashing tto recovery 2.8.0.1 of TWRP went flawless. Actually I am really impressed how easy it worked, unlike using all the other tools like motochopper and TWRP Manager, which actually didnt solve the problem at all not having a unlocked bootloader.
Now my last Q: Which CM11 is the preferable choice for using it with the Photon. I dont care so much about Nightly or not. What I need is stable VPN and WIFI, and working mail and messenger like Cypher.
And! Thank you so much arrrghhh for all your advice and help. This forum and its users are really a great help to the community of android !

All DONE
Ok used TWRP 2.8.0.1 to install cm-11-20141012-NIGHTLY-moto_msm8960_jbbl and the PA-Gapps-Modular for 4.4.x. Great work on everyone who participated making this possible and developing the necessary tools.
Thanks again to Arrrghhh and Cornholio !

[Q] Nexus S 4G Unlocked, Unrooted Broken Recovery

Hi,
I had before the OTA for Jelly Bean an ICS unlocked and rooted.
I tried to use ShabbyPenguin to get it rooted again but now I have a broken recovery.
So not sure what do I need to get it rooted again.. Is it possible?
Thanks!
Not positive, but could u flash cwm through adb? Then just flash a rooted ROM, or supuser.zip. Is the bootloader is still unlocked?
Haven't heard good stuff about root toolkits, its actually really easy to do for our phones.
Not sure if it is possible to flash cwm trough adb... However I will try it later today...
And yes, bootloader is still unlocked...

Yeah, I am positive u could use adb fast boot to flash a recovery, cwm or twrp u just need the image.
hhhmmmm... no luck yet...
I tried to flash a recovery and it keeps giving me a message
<waiting for device>
After that it seems like stuck..
I read somewhere else that maybe because of the drivers, but I already tried a couple of versions 1.3.8 and 1.5.6 with the same result...
btw I'm using a Windows 7 64 bit machine...
Not sure if use a Linux machine will have any benefit...

Well...
Also tried the google usb drivers with no luck....
I guess that I will try it with some other windows/linux version later today...
Off but on topic. Describe what you call a broken a recovery please.
When I try to run the recovery it appears a dead android with a red exclamation mark on the screen....
After that it takes some time to reboot again...

Yes I was saying it was broken because before the OTA update I had twrp as recovery, and now I can't flash any recovery

When you flash/install a ota your recovery gets wiped back to stock once it boots up due to the flash recovery script in the stock ROM.
Nothing is wrong with your device. Just follow a real guide on how to unlock and root. Real meaning using the SDK. Or even use one of those stupid one click crap. should not have a issue.
Guides are in the forum stickies.
Hi Guys,
Well not sure what the problem was.... maybe the drivers, maybe Win7 64 bits or I don't what...
I used a WinXP machine with the pdanet installed and it worked like charm...
I succesfully installed the recovery and root again.
Anyway... thanks for your time.
Glad to hear that.

[Q] Please Help! Phone Bricked (Noob Problems)

Hey all, sorry if this seems like other questions being posted, but I can not get my phone to work even after attempting the other fixes posted on the forums. I rooted my phone and was running the stock rom that came preloaded with it. I attempted to install CM10 through Rom Manager to no success, so I then tried to manually flash it as well as Gapps. My phone initially got stuck at the CM10 bootloader, but i could still go into CWM Recovery 5.8.3.1. After trying to get the rom to work more, it seems as if all I can access is CWM Recovery and nothing else. My phone wont even boot into the bootloader anymore and all i have access to is CWM Recovery.
I am not the most tech savvy individual when it comes to this since it has been ages since i tinkered with roms, but I would really like to fix this. So heres the facts since my post is so long (sorry!):
-Phone WILL NOT go into bootloader
-Can ONLY ACCESS ClockworkMod Recovery (5.8.3.1)
-SD Card wont mount (I get error "E:Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory)")
I really just want to go back to stock and root again from scratch to reduce any errors like this from occurring in the future and ANY help would be appreciated because I am totally lost and without a phone now. To make things even more difficult, I only have access to a Mac running Lion....although i do have Windows 8 through the use of a bootcamp program, so I CAN run windows programs. Thank you all for any information you may have!
Do you have NANDROID backup,if yes do NANDROID restore and see what happens

Sorry. Best would be the All-In-One Toolkit, TWRP is a recovery to replace CWM because its that what's messing you up and also TWRP is better. Toolkit will also flash the boot.img too.

And on a side note; my phone says S-ON...I thought when rooted it was supposed to be S-OFF. Could that be causing problems as well?

Boot.img is in the rom zip. S-On is not the reason its CWM thats messing you up with getting into the bootloader but also not flashing boot.img is not helping too.

Np but this time use TWRP as your recovery and once you up and running with CM10 you can use Flash Image GUI to flash the boot.img if you ever update the rom.

[Q] Root method

I have an ASUS TF300T running stock 4.2.1 build JOP400D_epad-10.6.1.27.5-20130902. I'd really like to, at a minimum, root this thing so I can boost it up a little bit. And at the most, install another ROM like CM 11.
I've rooted other machines (Droid Incredible, and my current Droid Razr) so I am not a novice by far. But after searching around I am finding that I can't really determine the 'best' method for rooting the TF300T. By best I mean - easiest and safest. With this in mind, can someone suggest the best method (and URL) for rooting the TF300T? And if I want to go so far as putting CM 11 on it (like I did for my phone) can Safestrap be run on this tablet? Any caveats?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. I might mention I use a Mac, so if whatever root method can run on a Mac that would be great. Otherwise if the method can work under a Win 7 VM (VirtualBox) that would be fine too.

I don't know about safestrap, but this is one of the pickiest tablets when it comes to ROMs: One mismatched bootloader, and it becomes an expensive paperweight.
There are several root methods in the General Forum if thats all you want to do.
For Customs ROMs, you will have to first unlock the bootloader, then update to the latest stock ROM, install the right TWRP, then pick the corresponding ROM. Never click wipe data in the bootloader menu.

Yeah, that's my worry, from what I read it seems this is a very 'picky' tablet - and I don't want to blow it up... so maybe I'll just start with rooting it. That way I can at least customize a few things, get rid of bloatware, etc. Hopefully that will help it a bit.

So what would you consider the 'easiest' and 'safest' of the root methods shown in the general forum? Any suggestions? Also, I assume the latest stock ROM is still the 4.2.1 build JOP400D_epad-10.6.1.27.5-20130902? I haven't got anything newer yet via System Update. That's why I was thinking of going to CM 11 like I did on my phone - to get Kit Kit. We'll probably never get it directly from ASUS....

Hmm, I'll give this a try. So is this what you used to get root on your TF300T? It looks like it works for a variety of different machines.
Does this only do root? Or also bootloader unlock so you can run other ROMS? Also, if for whatever reason I had to revert root and reinstall stock, will that work after rooting with this method?
Thanks!

This does ONLY root. Your bootloader is still unlocked, but if you reinstall stock, the root will be removed. If you do choose to unlock your bootloader, it can never be relocked and your warranty is forever void.

OK cool, I'll give it a shot. I'll first start with root and see if I can then optimize the tablet to run a little bit better (and get rid of the bloatware). Then later on I may consider unlocking the bootloader and trying another ROM - especially KitKat.

OK cmendonc2, I like having root, but I think I am about ready to unlock this baby and put on another ROM. I know the risks, and that my warranty will be voided - but I've had this a couple of years so it's not under warranty anyway.
So... I got the ASUS Bootloader unlocker program from the ASUS site; and I have what I believe is the latest TWRP. Is there a good place for instructions on how to unlock this thing and install a new ROM? I know it can be picky so I want to do it right and not brick it.
Also any suggestions on a good ROM? I was thinking CM 11, but I've also heard good things about OmniROM.
Thanks.

OK so you have bootloader 10.6.1.27.5. That's the latest version, so you don't have to worry about upgrading stock. This TWRP (http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407579270) is compatible with the bootloader. Download any 4.4.4 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf300t/development. Then download the latest GAPPS from here: http://goo.gl/ZcwCW9.
After unlocking, extract the TWRP blob and put it on your SD card. type this into Terminal Emulator on your tablet:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Then restart and go into TWRP. Wipe Data and cache, then install your new ROM and gapps.

Thats the Bootloader option "Wipe Data". You see that when u press vol down and power to get the three icons. It is the icon on the far right. Selecting that will result in an expensive paperweight.

OK I got the TWRP but when I extract it there is no .blob file. So what am I missing? There doesn't seem to be much in this .zip file.... I guess to do it the terminal way (seems the easiest to me) I need the blob file. I've googled left and right but I can't find a TWRP 2.7.0.1 blob.
Or would this ROM Manager app work?
UPDATE: Never mind, I figured out how to flash recovery using Fastboot on my Mac! TWRP is now installed and working! Going to try flashing OmniRom and see how that goes. So I think the only question I have left is: When I am flashing a new ROM (i.e. over the old stock) what wipe options in TWRP should I use first? Obviously cache and Dalvik, but which other ones? System? Data? For this first flash I obviously want/need to start fresh.

[Q] Rooting and updating xoom

Hey Guys,
I am a bit dead in the water now, i have tried some things but not with the right results.
I am trying to update my xoom and therefor i need to root it.
To root it i have tried LordAIOTool2.bat (unlock bootloader). It gets me to the point where the screen ask me to confirm i want to root (volume rockers) and then it reboots with a clean version and all my data a gone (wich is fine).
But it still tell's me i have no root rights!
What am i doing wrong here? can someone please help me out?
greetings Misael
Unlocking the bootloader will not give you direct root rights. It's the first step though.
In Lords tools I think there is a root option, try that. You can always flash a custom recovery and then the SuperSU zip
gapps
I just installed CM11 { cm-11-20140708-UNOFFICIAL-2037+0200-wingray } in my motorola xoom mz604. but i forgot to flash gapps-kk-20140606-signed. then i tried to flash this file later but i only get error. please help.

What error are you getting????
In the first post of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2580256 there's a installation guide which tells you to...
[...]
Flash omni-4.4.X-201XXXXX-wingray-HOMEMADE_XXXX.zip
Flash gapps-xxxx.zip
Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86.zip
Maybe you should read that and try this. Of course it's for Omni ROM but that worked for me to get that BigPart. After that I switched to TeamEOS. Worked fine for me.

Unlocking the bootloader will not give you direct root rights. It's the first step though.
In Lords tools I think there is a root option, try that. You can always flash a custom recovery and then the SuperSU zip

Hi,
Yes, my tool has a Root feature. It's in the same menu where you selected to unlock bootloader. What you confirmed wasn't root, but BL Unlock.

Worked fine for me.

hey i think your doing it wrong, try flashing cm 11, you don't have to flash superSU because it's already rooted, and install "Bank Gaaps Minimal", i read it on another thread but i think you can try to "Google" it haha

TWRP Error "No Command" when i choose Recovery.

Last night i decided it was finally time to root and put recovery onto my shield tablet. everything went smoothly that is untill i tried to boot into recovery (TWRP) everytime i try to enter recovery there's a picture of a dead android with a triangle on him with the words "no command" ...the only way i've been able to get back into recovery is to flash the image again. but once i leave twrp it's gone again. does anyone have any suggestions please. if you need more information, let me know
Thanks

You unlocked your bootloader before, right?
seems the original recovery is working, and not twrp.
after boot loader unlock you flashed TWRP via fastboot?
Yeah first thing i did was unlock the bootloader , then proceeded to root. i've installed a custom rom too ( Lineage os)...but i just can't seem to get into TWRP when rebooting , even with the button combo. the files for TWRP are on my tablet but i just can't access it. i followed this guide

Don t know how old the twrp is? Can t try it now, cause our web protection blocked the site.
I use always the last recovery from official twrp site
https://twrp.me/devices/nvidiahshieldtablet.html
Steps.
-bootloader unlock.
-'fastboot flash recovery /place/of/your/recovery'
after that you can flash custom roms and/or root with supersu or magisk..
If you did not start TWRP, how could you flash linageos?

Once i flashed TWRP it automatically put me into it after a few seconds, but then when i rebooted or asked to be put into recovery it gave me the no command line, the version of TWRP was old and i just installed the latest one like you mentioned and now it's working again. thanks for replying though, it might help someone else out in the same position.
Just one last question, do i need Xposed for Magisk ? i'm on nougat and haven't seen much about it apart from an unnoficial release.

maybe you wait for official xposed. what modules are you looking for?
there are many alternatives and/or magisk modules that can do some work ..
I only missed gravitybox cause of customisation of the statusbar and xprivacy..
don t tried the early xposed, cause there is no need for me.
but your problem was solved? good
