[Q] Used XT925 won't update, stuck on 4.0.4 - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last week I bought a used Razr HD. However, the phone which hasn't been rooted or anything like it, is stuck on android 4.0.4 and whenever I try to check for an update, Motorola services crashing. Furthermore, when I connect the phone to my computer and check for updates, it also says there are no updates. Contacted Motorola, but there is nothing they can do about it, as warranty has already expired. My question is: Does anyone know what caused this and how it can be solved? Or is there a good Rom (preferably Kitkat) which I can install without having the Jelly Bean or Kitkat bootloader? I found a thread in which there was a similar problem, but unfortunately, no solution was found.
Thanks in advance

go to sbf droid devs and grab a newer firmware for your region, then flash it with rsd. many tutorials for rsd can be found on google if you need it.

Thanks, i'll try and see if it works

Thank you very much. I tried today and it worked. Running Jelly Bean now. Still not the latest version, as that wasn't available on the site, but this one is acceptable as well.

glad you got it fixed
now that it is, did you try to check for updates? it should work now.

I tried, but the phone says that there are no updates :s. Could this be related to the fact that the phone is rooted?

no, it should still pull the update, it will likely fail to install though.

Doesn't matter. The phone works and is rooted so I am perfectly content at the moment. Once again thanks for all the help.

The update came in today and on the second attempt it installed. Only trouble is that I seem to have lost my root, but as the bootloader is unlocked, I think it can quite easily be restored. But once again thanks for your help.

Device does not update through OTA

This doesn't seem like a common problem, but I found a few people who got this issue.
My TF700 have been on 4.0.1 and it does not upgrade to 4.1 JB even though it has been released for a week. I have then used the custom method to force update to 10.4.4.16 - JB. However, I know 4.4.18 just came out and I am afraid it still would not update OTA.
Anyone has a solution for this??

Have to try to go into settings->about tablet-> check for update?? I assumed that your device is locked/rooted with pure stock JB, no modification, no system app freezing?

Yup checking for update has nothing
Before I upgraded to 10.4.4.16 the device was totally stock, and it just does not update for the longest time.
Since I had updated to 10.4.4.16, I have then unlocked, rooted. No mod, no system app freeze.
Still no update notice for 10.4.4.18

I didn't realized it was that and now I went back to read the All-In-One Guide For Asus Infinity thread detail; I do see that in the note. I am fine with doing manual updates but was just bothered the device doesn't function properly**
I guess now even the tablet will have to be manual updated OR eventually use custom rom :fingers-crossed:

Yup. Assuming you're into the stock experience and have the keyboard (thus appreciating the shortcut keys), CleanROM is eyeing you. Your 700 is behaving normally, so that's one problem out of the way.
When I come back to home, i saw that update is available. But I forgot temporary disabled root (ota root keeper). My device started update, but it stoped in bootloader (deat android with red triangle) My tf started without update, and now I can`t OTA (update is not available for you). Can I redownload update, and update soft one more time? How can I do this?

I had something kinda weird happen just now.
I originally unlocked and rooted the moment I got the tablet, and manually installed 10.4.4.16. Everything works great.
I just finished manually updating to 10.4.4.18 and after a reboot, it said I have a system update available, which was 10.4.4.16.....
[/doublerainbowvoice] Does this mean I still got an OTA even though I'm unlocked and rooted?

Sorry man!
Looks you and me are in the same boat.
I just threw up my hands and did another factory reset last evening.

Is there anyway to unlock the bootloader right now?

I've been looking around for a while and can't find much about unlocking the bootloader on the most recent Jelly Bean software. Is there anyway to do it?
Download the unlock tool from the Asus website ......

download apk from here (This is the same tool as download from Asus) https://www.dropbox.com/s/8oj250figntedsb/UnLock_Device_App_V7.apk
That unlocker apk will work. I used it on a jellybeaned tf700 without issues. Just accept all the warnings. Fear not.

Curious
Logan_M im curious to know if the tool worked for you. I have tried for the past month, daily to use the tool to unlock bootloader and it will not. I receive an error stating "An unknown error occurs, which may be a network issue. Please wait and try again later." I tried for 3 weeks on latest Jellybean update, then i decided to downgrade to ICS .30, and i still have same error. Tried on ICS for past week, on different Wifi connections. No luck. I contacted Support and they provided me the same tool V7, still error. They then asked for my MAC Address and i havent heard back from them yet. Hope i can get this unlocked soon, i have been wanting to try some custom ROMS.

[Q] Root Failure (All Methods Attempted) FIXED :D

Heres the issue. I am no noob at this whatsoever and have tried EVERYTHING. I have used every program I could find to attempt root and none can seem to gain root access. The install SuperUser or SuperSU and every time root fails even if said app is installed. Please help Im doing a talk on August 20th that I NEED this device for. All help appreciated. Thanks!
Im slightly confused as your sig says rooted stock
But anyway I recently got myself a Razr HD and I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241788 to root and unlock bootloader

[Help] I can't check for updates

Hi, I'm currently having troubles checking for updates on my motorola razr hd. Ever since android version 4.1.2 my phones shows "check for update is not available at this time."After upgrading 4.0.4->4.1.2 it worked fine but then i decided to do a factory reset for my phone, which resulted into an infinite loop. This then was fixed temporarily with a fix I found on the web but afterwards I tried to install 3rd party apps but it didn't allow me. I also tried to update which gave me the same error ,"check for update is not available at this time." So I gave motorola a call about 5 months ago and they guided me to do a hard reset which fixed the 3rd party installation problem. However the update message still persists. Can anybody help me with this problem?
PS. I have not rooted my phone. It's still on stock android 4.1.2 I've tried both using wifi and LTE but it results in the same error.

i would find that update here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
and use rsd to flash it. the update caused some errors, it is best to start fresh.
you can google how to use rsd if you need a tutorial, its pretty easy, just a few steps.
i dont think there is any less evasive path to get you back on track.

I guess I am a blonde robot . Anyways I just did some research and I am gathering that there is a bug in my system's firmware from the JB update which is preventing me to update my software or check for updates. I suppose I need to follow the link and locate the stock firmware file for my device based on the system version I am running. Furthermore I need to use RDI Lite 6.0? So where can I find a step by step proper tutorial/ guide to walk me through the process as I have never flashed anything before. OK that seems more specific. Thanks

Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx SU6-7.7?

OK, since you asked...
On a Motorola phones that still have their stock, factory install intact, they do this clever thing where they cycle between a few different boot logo's, with slightly different colors in the Motorola logo on each boot.
Is there any way to replicate that after you're unlocked?

I believe that you can replace the stock boot logo with an unlocked or locked bootloader. There are a quite a few logos to choose from. When you pick one, you fastboot the image.
Oh, to answer your original question, SU6-7.7 appears to be the "terminal" KitKat release for the Droid Ultra/MAXX.
If you go to the Motorola web site you can get an earlier 2014 4.4.4 build, SU4.21 I think. I think that was the first 4.4.4, before any OTA's. This is why I was happy when you posted the more recent one.

I've flashed both, they both seem to work just fine.

To my knowledge, I don't think you can install custom roms once you install the latest SU update. Beings that you're on SU6-7.7 like me, there's not much you can do until someone comes out with another exploit.
Can I revert to su6-7 after having su6-7.7 update? I could do that after su6-7.3 update though.

In case this helps anyone: I recently updated to SU6-7.7 from SU4.21 following the guidance in this thread and referenced resources on a XT1030 (Moto Mini). Initially I tried to get cute and only flashed the system image and modem upgrades; was rewarded with a bootloader loop that did not resolve after a full TWRP restore of the previous build. Next take including everything in the zip except boot.img and recovery.img as my device is unlocked and wasn't sure if flashing boot.img would relock the bootloader. Also wanted to maintain a true recovery. Everything worked fine except the WiFi radio which refused to engage (Bluetooth was ok). After a bit of fiddling dropped back to fastboot and flashed boot.img. Device restarted just fine with bootloader remaining unlocked. Whohoo! I should also note the all of the above was a 'dirty flash'. Never erased the userdata partition; all apps came back just fine. Oh yeah, had to reflash SuperSU but that's pretty standard after a system wipe.
Thanks to all the key contributors in this thread and elsewhere in the forum. After some miserable bootloops a couple years back (foolishly accepted VZW OTA) I froze the rom and vowed never to update it. It's nice to be running the terminal release of KitKat for this device which as several stability/usability features baked in along with the usual security updates (now dated but better than 2014!). I had considered CM 12.1 and CM 13 but needed fully hardware functionality that only seems to come with stock builds.

Dear friends i have successfully root mini droid mini su6-7.7 with kingo root v3.4 (not kingo root global). actually i was trying to flash su4.21 over su6-7.7 with RSD lite v6.1 but failed with max get var and after that tried to flash with RSD lite 5.1 again failed without any error. after all of there method i thought of giving a try to kingo root. i downloaded 2 apps kingo root globalv4.9.7 and kingo root v3.4, kingo root global failed to root but.... kingo root v3.4 succeeded to roo. now i have superuser app in system driectory.
but problem is that after removing system app (amazon) when i restarted the phone all the apps came back and superuser app gone. i don't know why so my request to look into this method .
i have tested this method and worked 100% and i have no intention of making fun of me. i have both the apps but don't know how to upload here
Thanks
