Does anyone notice whether TWRP has sharpening too? I can't really tell myself; provided TWRP does also have sharpening on text, could that possibly mean that the sharpening issue goes deeper than just the drivers?
But the sharpening has always been deeper than the software/driver level lol. The sharpening is the QHD screen in its full 2k glory. It comes from having the screen, then the digitizer over sharpens it. Take a look at the note 4, it's QHD 2K screen but it's not over sharpened at all because its using amoled technology just one LCD vs what the G3 is using. The note 4 screen takes a big fat dump on our G3's screen....

Just got my phone. The txt on the apps and main screens and just about all txt looks very blurry. Pics and such are perfect.
Is this something others are seeing? didn't see anybody mention it elsewhere.

Pentile RGBG matrix... effective resolution is lower than RGB. Comparing it to an iPhone 4 screen with even higher RGB resolution makes it look worse... so I suggest switching to a phone that has an RGB LCD like the MT4G or something if you don't want to deal with the pixelation. Also, the screen being 4" doesn't help... compared to a condensed 3.5" iPhone display.

That's also why I thought 4"+ was too big for 800x480 (S-)AMOLED. I was actually surprised for Samsung keeping that resolution.
Still, at such resolutions, I value vibrant colors more than higher resolution like on the iPhone 4.
Thanks for the info. It seems what's getting me is that images and apps aren't all made for the high res screen. So some look horrible, others don't.
SO I guess the lack of a standard, like iphone, makes not all apps equal.

Pretty much everything will be OK for the screen, 800x480 has been in common use for over a year.
You may have a duff one like me. The text on my Galaxy S is very well defined but slightly blurry on my Nexus S with a dodgy screen. Does your screen look a little greeny / yellow when viewed from an angle?
Unless its really bad blurry, its most likely just the pentile sub pixel layout all Samsung amoled screens have, which causes text to look just ever so slightly fuzzy compared to traditional lcd screens with full 3 pixels. It doesn't bother most people, and It's just a trade off we make for having the nice colors from amoled screens for the time being.
Doesn't bother me one bit. But the larger the screen gets at the same resolution, the more noticeable it gets. Next to my nexus one I can definitely notice it more on the 4 inch than the 3.7inch screen.
I have also noticed this "blurry" text, especially small text against a white background, which is almost unreadable. From an angle, the screen also does appear a bit yellowish. This is my first time with a "Galaxy S" phone, so I may just not be used to it... think i have a defective screen? i've been using a Motorola Droid 1 for the past year, fyi...

No I think your screen is just fine. The amoled pentile is particularly blurry compared to the Droid screen which has text that looks razor sharp. So you're just coming from the device that shows this issue most prominently, that's all.
Certainly my Galaxy S with the exact same panel is perfectly readable from many angles.
My Nexus S text is blurry and the screen is yellowish when tilting.

buy the asian/russian version when it comes out. because it will be SLCD.
you will get what you want.
i like the Super Amoled over the SLCD . i like Ratina over Super Amoled. but to each has his own .
So to you SAMOLED > SLCD, but Retina > SAMOLED. You do know that Retina = LCD right?

Screen Door Effect... WHY GOOGLE/Sammy???
ok, just had a chance to look at the Nexus S... and WTF??? The screen is so pixelated. The screen door effect is horrible. I thought I took a step back in time for a second. The pixelation is soo bad I would never think twice about buying this phone. Why oh why don't these phone makers give the people what they want.
So, Apple comes out with the new retina display, and while it is way too small, it's soo very very very clear. Google's response? This? Come on... WHY? Aren't we suppose to be moving forward? Ok, so it's brighter and uses less power and has a higher refresh rate... WHATS THE POINT IF YOU CANT SEE ANYTHING???? THERE IS NO POINT.
I don't mean to be harsh... I'm not a Nexus hater... I just wish Google would have done a better job for their flagship phone.
Never been happier with my EVO on Cyanogen...

Get it in another country. In many countries it will come with Super Clear LCD, found on the S8530 Wave II. Super Clear LCD is said to have the advantages of Super AMOLED (sunlight visibility, viewing angle), but wheter that's true or not, it's a really nice display. Look it up on the internet, although I have to warn you, you'll lots of people complaining about the screen because the S8500 Wave I had Super AMOLED.

As a Korean who is waiting for galaxy s5, I am recently reading about Korean articles that notifies me with latest rumors about Samsung's next upcoming phone and figured out that Galaxy s5 will be likely to roll out with a 2560x1440 556ppi display. I personally think this is a meaningless over spec since there are no advantages to it... Here are why
1. 5xxppi displays won't be sharper and won't display more contents than current 4xxppi (FHD) displays.
I have seen both Optimus G and G2 which sport around 320ppi and 420ppi displays respectively. Unlike the specs suggested I did not feel G2 was sharper than optimus G since 320ppi is so dense already (Jobs's retina propaganda is right I guess...).
Also one of the main benefits of using a higher resolution display is that higher res displays can display more stuff on a single screen. However, I found G2 does not display 33% more stuff than optimus G does even though it should. g2 probably can do it but doing so will make texts extremely small. 5 in. displays have limit due to its small size and raising resolutions do not make it to display more contents. This tells that even every pixels of FHD displays cannot be used effectively, meaning same thing will happen to 2560x1440 displays with even more wasted pixels.
2. Higher resolution displays drains more battery
If there is no advantage in doing so, why would waste battery in vain?
3. 2560x1440 resolution = pentile display
It is quite obvious. Making high PPI displays with AMOLED is extremely hard since putting pixels together is a difficult task. As you guys all know, pentile has been a gimmick Samsung has been using for a long time to produce displays with higher PPI without actually putting pixels only 66% dense as the PPI on the spec sheet. It seems like Samsung thinks this gimmick is something acceptable since average customers do not even know what the pentile means. If Samsung goes for 2560x1440 resolution, they will make it pentile for sure. I have seen people saying pentile does not matter since the Galaxy s3 since the pixels are dense and no one can tell the difference. I do agree to some extent but color distortion is quite apparent in pentile displays... Especially white which requires all RGBs to be turned on.
If Samsung can produce pentile 2560x1440display, they can probably produce RGB FHD display with S-Stripe. I think the RGB FHD display will make more sense.

Well, I got an invite last week and ended up buying a One+ but now that I have it in my hand and I saw the screen and compared it to my Nexus 5 on FULL Brightness, the screen on the One+ looks grainy. Like there is a micro layer of dust on the screen making it uncrisp and unsharp. Its no as bright and Vibrant as the Nexus 5 is. Is this a hardware issue? It always looks like there is dust on it when its perfectly clear...
Anyone having this issue with the device as well? What are the possible solutions for this? I did contact the CS so lets see what they say...
Nexus5 has Full-HD on a 5" screen, pushing it to 445dpi while Oneplus has the same resolution on a 5.5" screen resulting in 401dpi.
Especially close-up you will see that your OPO's screen looks less "real" and more computer-screenish. Comparing it to other phones (including my GS3) makes it look very beautiful so it's rather relative.
I do hope that is the cause of your issue and not a real physical layer of dust.
The OnePlus 6T has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.

Screen is nice, but isn't as clear as I've seen on other phones. However, I think that could be because of the screen protector.
Amoled it may be, but left side of screen brighter than right..
Couldn't 'unsee' it, mainly on the normal gray and solid colours.
May be pressure related, as the trend seems to be to box phone with screen pushed against lid.
Don't have time to run gambit of similar happening, shame.

It's the pentile matrix for AMOLED displays. I checked Pixel 3 and Samsung S9 and they are also not as sharp as the LCD phones I had previously (HTC 10 and U11). It's really obvious and noticable for me while reading text. I hope Samsung can do something about it in the near future.

Screen is more than "good enough" ... but not as good as my Galaxy S8.
Well, you can't beat them all ... the S8 is (of course) slower and has tons more bloatware.
Well, in my opinion the display is brilliant and detailed but...there is a big "but": at the upper corners, the curves are not well defined and clean and the images seem grainy especially with light colors.
I don't know how to describe it but when comparing with my Moto x from 2015, this display isn't as 'crisp'. The Moto x has 2K resolution, maybe that's the reason? Still, I'm not unhappy overall. The ease-of-use and snappiness of the system I think makes up for the shortcomings overall
Does anyone know? There is a big difference especially if the screen is bigger and the resolution is not quad HD. If you do not know how to tell them apart, just google pentile vs rgb

Debatable. This is a big screen phone not the typical 5.5 inch ones back in the day. I still want to know if this is rgb or not. I have a mi max 3 and the screen is pretty good
It is almost sure pen tile. As I know, only tab s and tab s2 hase pure rgb matrix... I had and have both tabs. And had at least 15 different phones, also flagships between them,wirh pentile
Picture quality is night and day... You can never get that accuracy of colors in pen tile.

I even tried to downgrade it to lower resolution and it still looks good with no real difference in sharpness. Now, I am almost 50 years old and so maybe my eyes are fooling me... so don't trust this too much. But I'm pretty sure that for "daily use" it is more the enough.
There's one thing that bothers me though : it is that slightly blueish tint it's getting when viewed at about 20°C vision angle. Not as bad as on earlier LG displays, but still there. Noticeable only on white backgrounds It's common "disease" for OLED/AMOLED displays.
Anyways, how can I say it's pentile or RGB ? The link provided explains the difference but doesn't say how to check does it ?

It's easy to tell by experience at looking at screens especially on a big screen even on a 5.5 inch screen I can tell the difference/ Oneplus owners have complained about their displays being not as sharp too because they use 1080p pentile displays now imagine this on an even bigger screen like the Honor Note10, 8X and 20X.
The one method to use is to drop bits of water on a screen displaying text and use a magnifying glass then you can examine the subpixel arrangement to determine if it's pentile or rgb. Smaller drops of water magnify the pixel more and largers drops magnify less
This is example is a RG/BW LCD which is also blurry. Notice how this display has the blue in a diamond pattern similar to a Pentile layout. This makes text and edges of icons and pictures and finer detail look blurry.

I'm fine with pentile on a 2560x1440 or higher display but not on anything lower as it's noticeable
These are pictures of my mi max 3 6.9 inch lcd display. Rgb layout, red blue green all in a straight vertical line. One of the reasons why I picked the max 3 over the note 10 was the display sharpness and accurate color reproduction.
