Dual boot linux? Possible? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to dual boot a full linux distro on note pro 12.2? And if it is possible, how do you do that if i may ask?
Because sometimes I just want a full desktop experience (i bought this instead of the surface pro 2, and I sure regret it).
Kind regards,
G

No, it's not possible. But you can have a linux distro in android through linuxdeploy for example. but you need root and custom kernel.

Thanks for the answer brother!
I already have that thanks to your kernel and your thread!
But it's not the same as the normal Ubuntu, not as smooth, I don't even have a working browser to browse the net, do you know why? (is totally empty even though I installed the full and biggest size)
Thanks!

honestly I dont know, I dont use linux on tab

What about LinuxOnAndroid? Tried it yet?
I don't know if it works. Your tab needs root, but I'm curious if it needs a different kernel.

Well, if you read what it says on your link, you need kernel that supports loop devices.
I bet your stock kernel doesn't.

i think theres a HP tablet that officially lets you dual boot android or windows 8 on it, if you want linux and ubuntu instead i would get a nexus 7, im not sure if the 2013 model has any linux or ubuntu roms but you can check, the 2012 model is PERFECT enough anyway and i know they have unbuntu and maybe linux roms, you could find one for cheap on swappa.

i dont think the tab z2 has an Ubuntu rom yet, i see that the first one might have one though, the z2 has quiet better specs but since you want to multiboot i would still recommend the nexus 7 its not compatibility issues ( some might) so you could build unbtunu touch for the xperia tab z2 if you wanted.

[Q] Question about overclocking~ (Note 2 N7100)

Hey xda~ noobynoob here and I got a few questions about overclocking, here we go:
1. Is it safe?
Just bought a Note 2 N7100 and got it in a bootloop [scared me senseless, thank god i fixed it]
2. Kernels?
Um what are kernels and what do they differ?
3.Are all kernels for overclocking compatible for my device/rom?:fingers-crossed:
Note 2 N7100 with Dr.Ketan's Custom Rom v10.0 android version 4.4.2 (I currently have my eyes on this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001838)
4.What kernel do you guys recommend (in case this one isnt compatible or if you just know a better one):victory:
I'm open to suggestions, I just want whats best for my phone
5.If something goes wrong flashing the kernel is there a chance I get bricked/stuck in a bootloop?
already messed up once when trying to flash my custom rom, im afraid itll happen again
ThanQ

The kernel, in the simplest terms, is the piece of software in the operating system that tells the OS how to use the hardware.
Custom kernels typically take the stock kernel and modify the settings, and/or add features and setting parameters (often ported from other custom kernels).

I don't know. It's your responsibility to make sure it's compatible. I know Samsung makes many different versions of their Notes and Galaxy XS models (for different carriers, different regions of the world, etc), so a kernel for one version of the Note 2 might not work with your Note 2.
Further, just like it is with computer processors, not all are created equal. After manufacturing, processors are tested sorted into "bins" (literally) according to how well they work. Typically processors are all underclocked below their potential to some degree. That way they're not maxed out and overheating won't be a problem. Since they're underclocked, that means they can be overclocked to their true potential, but how far is a roll of the dice. One guy's Note 2 might have a processor from a higher bin and stably overclockable to 1.9GHz. Or you might have gotten one from a lower bin, and all you can OC it to is 1.7GHz. OC'ing too far will cause glitches and crashes.

I can't help you with that. It's best that you just read up on the kernel(s) you want to try, and by "read", I mean start from the first post, and read every post until you've read them all. That way you know about possible problems and how to sort them out if you encounter them.
5.If something goes wrong flashing the kernel is there a chance I get bricked/stuck in a bootloop?

If you have a custom ROM, that means you have a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM, etc). From within the recovery you can do what's called a nandroid backup. It probably won't be labeled as "nandroid" (even though that's what we call it), but just a backup. This creates an "image" of your phone as it is when you run the backup. Store it on your SD card or PC (or both). If something goes wrong, you should still be able to reboot into recovery and restore your backup. Or, if you have a copy of your current kernel (custom ROMs sometimes have their own kernels, and might be available to download), you can just reflash the old kernel in recovery.

hmmm I guess ill need to read up more, I read on the kernels page something about needing a touchwiz based rom? what does that mean and how do I tell if my rom is tocuh based? As for that backup idea, that seems pretty useful, im gonna do that right now

TouchWiz is what Samsung calls its interfaces.

Question Some model question.

I bought SM-A525F/DS today and I am soooo worried about couple things:
1) Will SM-A525F 's custom ROM and kernels work on it?
2) I don't know how but my phone has 4 GB of RAM instead of 6 GB. But I did compare this phone with SM-A525F and they had no difference except RAM. Even their weight is same. Does it mean that it will have problems with ROMs or kernels or not?
Yes
No

Will work fine
Are you 100% sure?
I am very worried about it because I gave my all saved money for it so....
Please, can you show any proofs that it will work fine.

I see that both you and ShaDisNX255 are senior developers but still, u sure? Afaik kernel is the part of the program which makes Software and OS to communicate with memory and if I use the device's kernel with 6GB on 4GB device gonna cause some problems.
Is it really true or false?

I don't see a reason for it to not work. Even on stock ROM Samsung uses the same kernel and ROM, so it should be absolutely fine.
If not, just hook me up in PM and we will figure it out.

Thanks for your answers. Right now I try to install TWRP and then install either RayOS or PixelExperience.
ShaDisNX255 and Ryzen5950XT, I know it is dumb question but I have one.I will try to compile and patch SM-A525F's kernel with nethunter so I finally can get external radio and wifi adapters. Which of these ROMs should I use?

I've never used nethunter so I don't know.
I finally installed Pixel Experience first and gotta say that phone feels awesome. Thanks for creating such a good ROM for this device. Also, can I try kernel source from your repository and add it some patches and so on so I can use it in NetHunter? *And can you help me with compiling it? I worked with kernel 3.10 but not with 4.x or 5.x*
One more question: Let's say that OS got update. Will Pixel Experience also get update?

Question Pen support for LineageOS GSI or any GSI on P11 Pro [TB-J706F]

I sorely want to upgrade to Android 12 with my Lenovo P11 Pro, as I know that the tablet will no longer be getting any OTA updates.
I'm looking to get the LineageOS GSI version, or even the stock Android 12 GSI OS.
My question is, if I do flash that ROM, will my tablet still support the Lenovo Active Pen 2 that I'm using right now? Unfortunately, I cannot compromise with the pen use since I'm using the tablet for medical school.
If not, do you know of any custom OS made specifically for P11 Pro?
Thanks in advance for your answers and recommendations!
I've been using my TB-J716F with a GSI and the pen works just fine, so yeah it will most likely work for you too. I don't use the original Lenovo pen because most Microsoft Surface compatible pens work with this tablet and are cheaper.
It's working, I've even tried 13GSI, but all of them lack productivity/working mode which is a must for me, so I've reverted to stock. Rotation problem is solved with an app

No idea, you must try for yourself, for e.g. first try the dual boot option, to see it. But you need unlocked bootloader. I like the productivity mode, so I reverted back to stock. I've tried 13gsi dual boot and Lineage 12L... lack of working/productivity mode is dealbreaker for me

Thanks so much for replying!
Which other features are missing on the LineageGSI, if I may ask? Other than the rotation problem?
