Tried to browse a large web page: (can't post links yet) but a popular computer store in Canada: NCIX that has weekly specials. I have Dolphin HD and native browser and both struggle/hang with this page. Is this expected?
Native browser will eventually hang and just get a white screen. Have to kill the application and it's back to normal.
This is my first Android device so I'm trying to get the hang of things.
Browser running out of ram at 490MB?
I was wondering about viewing the facebook photos page, only about 100 of 250 thumbnails would load, and then stop with the twirling fb icon.
I checked in the app free memory, and i saw it bouncing around the 450-490 MB mark, never going into the second half of 1GB of memory. Unless this memory is allocated to the GPU (why so much for a 720P screen with no 3D active?) what is using that memory?
With a handfull of apps like Maps and the messengers and mail using 20MB each, and no way to stop them from running, and of course no swap space, there's a wall here...
If it is GPU memory, I hope that there's a plan to do dynamic allocation coming up...
There should be about 700 mb of useable ram depending on your rom but about 200 of that is system so you should have about 500 free for personal use
the rest is for dalvik and the gpu
Large pages without flash: No problem
Large pages filled with flash-crap: I think I can hear my TF crying. Never got a crash or freeze though, it just becomes veeeeryyyyy sloooooow......
Yep, red box site has issues too. Soooo many graphic thumbnails of the movies.

Sometimes comes the time I have 5 - 12 apps open. I switch the one of the apps initially opened earliest and they're cleared out of my RAM so there is a delay as the device attempts to reload my current position.
Sometimes when the browser is opened the web page refreshes.
I always have 300mb free RAM when I check the app manager.
Device: SGS3 international (1GB RAM)
ROM/Kernel: cm10/cm10
Zram disabled, allow purging disabled
Does this happen with your device? Any way to somehow lock apps in RAM?

I would also love to know this. The experience so far is much less enjoyable than what I read on line....

it happens ... if your device needs more memory for a particular process ...it'll swap out the existing process...
I own a samsung galaxy tab 2(GT p3100), which initially had 4.0.4 ICS with 687 MB RAM(but specified as 1 GB RAM, as some developers claim that it is being reserved for system). I updated my firmware to 4.1.2 and now it showed me 770 MB RAM. later i rooted my device and installed the latest CM(cyanogenmod) 10.1 (jelly bean 4.2). To my surprise this rom which has less bloatware and is smoother, it showed me 691 MB RAM, less than 770 MB as displayed by the STOCK jelly bean OS.
i would like to ask, which OS(custom/stock) displays the MAX RAM for GALAXY TAB 2 7.0(P3100)???????
as i don't ve enough internet downloading capacity(limited downloads), i can't just go on downloading all the firmwares and keep flashing everytime, SO EXPERIENCED USERS, PLEASE SUGGEST.
for more info(for my knowledge), do please tell this also--------->tab 2(my device specifies 1 GB RAM and the same does galaxy s2, but why with ICS(4.0.4) installed both the devices show different MB RAM. tab2 shows around 680 MB wheras S2 shows around 880 MB, wheras HTC one X shows 1 GB.
why is this so????? i know some developers claim that this RAM is being consumed by system or reserved for system, but why is it different for different devices, when the OS is the same?????
again if you claim that it is reserved by the android system, then WHY DO , WITH NO APPS INSTALLED TOO, I SEE AROUND 300-400 MB RAM BEING USED(300 MB WHEN I DNT USE ANY WIDGETS AND ALL, AND I STOP ALL THE PROCESSES, BY CLICKING FORCE STOP ON ALL APPS LIKE GMAIL AND EVERYTHING EXCEPT ANDROID SYSTEM AND PHONE AND SOME NECESSARY RED MARKED APPS IN THE DEFAULT TASK MANAGER).
if android process is being displayed here with this 770 MB ram, then where has the 230 MB ram gone------------>do you mean the android process consumes the hidden RAM and also a part of this RAM too???????------------------>this sounds too unpleasant, when htc one x displays all the specified RAM but my tab fails.
really disapponting
You are getting too excited about available RAM. The OS system manages available RAM so each different ROM will use it a little more or less.
The amount of free RAM has nothing to do with how many apps are stored, ONly how many apps are RUNNING. Android system efficiently manages RAM and tries to keep it about 80% full all the time. So called Bloatware (one mans bloat is another mans useful app) has nothing to do with speed , they do nothing if you don't run them.
The system RAM usage contained OS buffers, temp storage and system routines that are always loaded for speed.
1GB is a ton of RAM for android.
You do not have a RAM issue.
You can run out of SD storage space for downloaded apps if you store too many. But you have several GBs of storage so that's hard unless you are a real pack rat.

Right Sir,
well, regarding storage i dont ve any issue as some data like pics and vids can be kept in ext storage card too,but i also wanted to know which ROM provides user with more RAM, so that it will be good for multitasking or if i play high end games like NFS MW

The amount of difference between one kernel and another (which is what really matters here) isn't large enough to make any real difference in the performance of any application. The available RAM after the kernel grabs its stuff varies around 10% from one kernel to the next.
If you want to make a performance impact, make sure you minimize the number of running applications that compete for the available RAM. However, that won't make much difference as Android is very aggressive about grabbing memory back from idle applications.
Basically, you're obsessing over something that in the end will make no difference in how your tablet runs.

Irrelevant. Android will clear apps from RAM if it's needed by an app with high memory usage. This isn't windows

well, if this is the thing, and android can kill apps automatically then why do some people prefer custom ROMs like CM or AOKP.
even for installing custom ROMs they need to root their tab/phone, and if they root and want to get rid of so called bloatwares and make their OS lightweight, they can uninstall it using root uninstaller(available for free in google play)....
but why do they prefer custom ROMS?????

More features generally. Some roms will manage the memory better than others, ie at what point it starts to kill apps to free RAM(although this can be adjusted in any rom using rom toolbox or a similar app). many custom roms include a theme engine allowing more customiza. They may make better use of resources to decrease battery usage or because it has better cpu governors which will increase performance. They may flash a custom roms because it's kernel includes modules that aren't in the stock Kernel. There are many reasons besides RAM usage, since as you say you can root and remove bloatware and change memory handling(called minfree or oomut of memory)

Dear Xperia L Geeks! I was happy that i have 5.8gb memory in my device for apps, but after little time i got mad when i saw that apps memory is only 1.5gb, now i cant install more apps due to low memory. Now what should i do? I am not a gamer, neither a apps geeks. I just use for email(SMTP) and for browsing purpose and some office utilities. Kindly suggest my step by step tutorial to increase the APPS memory, i have 16gb sd card and 3gb free in my device, but apps memory is all low. Kindly help

Dear Crytech: Thanks for the reply, yeah i am a average user, but what i am using is SMTP email, few office utilities, one game, ftp clients etc, but its require space. umm i am having only 100mb free. Yeah i moved few apps into phone memory but cant move other heavy apps into phone memory. So now i think i dont have any option to increase the 1.5apps partition. As far as i know that this is only possible in root. But i am not familiar, (Root,Bootlocker). What should i do now to increase memory for apps?

Hi naeemdal,
I read your post with interest. It sounds like we've been having the same issue with available device memory on our Xperia Ls. By the sounds of it though, I may have more apps installed on my phone than you have. Having said that, I'm not a gamer.
For me it started about a month or so ago, when I began getting notifcations on the phone saying something like "Storage Space is running low, some functions may therefore stop working correctly". By that point I had only about 20 or 30 mb of available device memory remaining out of a total space (not including Internal Storage) of 1.57 gb. I didn't understand how the available memory can have gotten so low as I hadn't installed anything new recently.
Anyway, I removed whatever apps I could but the available device memory continued to drop, until eventually the phone started to malfunction. Various system apps began to fail or not start up properly on boot. The first thing to go I think was USB connectivity, then messaging.
So I backed up as much as I could and did the first of several full factory resets.
After closely monitoring my phone for large or sudden changes in the available device memory, I am fairly certain by now that my installation of Spotify (the music streaming app) is responsible for this problem. Let me explain why I think this: After the first factory reset, the first app I reinstalled was Spotify. The following day, the device memory started to fall until it reached 0 mb within about 48 hours and the phone began to malfunction. I then did another factory reset, but this time I installed all of my other main apps leaving out Spotify. I used the phone as normal for a few days and there was no change in the device memory. Only then did I install Spotify, and by the following morning the available memory had dropped from 1.11 gb to 1.08 gb (a drop of 30 mb). By the afternoon the available memory had further dropped (by another 90 mb) to 0.99 gb. I immediately cleared the Spotify data and uninstalled the app. More than 24 hours have passed since then but the available device memory has remained at 0.99 gb, i.e. not further drop in memory level.
The screenshots you supplied to Crytech are just what I've been seeing on my phone. Out of total space of 1.57 gb, you have 578 mb used for Apps and 216 mb Available. So what has happened the remaining 813 mb?
In light of this, my question to you is whether you too are a Spotify user? If you are, then Spotify's devs need to know about this.

Thanks for the reply naeemdal,
It looks like you have a lot more applications installed than I do after all.
The only apps you use that I also have installed are Chrome, Clean Master, ES file Explorer, Gmail (disabled), Neo Reader, OfficeSuite (Pro) & Youtube. I'm really not sure therefore what it is, if anything, that your memory problem and mine have in common. Crytech, if you're reading this, do you have any perspective on what the problem might be here?
As I said, I believe that, in my case, the serious reduction in memory is connected with my installation of Spotify, so I intend reaching out to their support guys over the next week or two once I've monitored the situation and and tested a bit more.
Dear Victoristics,
I am using Spotify and I am having the same issue all the time.
Solving this problem I reset to factory settings over ten times already and installed the new firmware of Xperia L.
I havent installed a clean install of Android yet, maybe it will help. But I thought I will go to the shop and switch my phone to a new L and see if it happens there as well.
Greetings from Finland
My Xperia L and Spotify = the same problem.
I have to check if the problem exists on Xperia Tablet Z.
I'm curious is it Sony fault or Spotify.
I have Spotify and the same problem with the memory. But I also suspect that the problem may be motivated by the photos and videos. A few days ago I let the phone to my 7 years old daughter to record some videos and photos. When she returned me the phone were only 50 Mb of available memory, and I had left him with 250 Mb. And the Album App does not work well, occasionally I have the black screen.
Anyway if the problem is caused by Spotiy, I'm not willing to give up that application. I think it is Sony's responsibility to resolve this. I have Spotify in other devices and no problems.
alright i just got the p30 pro (6 GB) and I ran my own speed test where I load a bunch of my commonly used apps (starbucks, uber, whatsapp, chrome, etc.)
sure, when i re-open these apps immediately after loading them (like 15 total), they're all still in memory, but I find that over time, they need to be reloaded even tho I'm not really opening new apps. just seems to be like these speed tests are stupid because the OS, over time, closes inactive apps.
yes, I disabled Huawei's aggressive app killing by going to "battery:" -> "app launch" and disabled "manage all automatically"
OR is it because I "only" have 6 GB of RAM? Would getting the s10 Plus with 8 GB of RAM (or p30 pro 8 GB) make a difference? i mention Samsung cause I read soemwhere it has better RAM management than huawei.
