Is Gear 2 a good supplement for Note Pro 12.2? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I carry a note pro in a bag all the time. I worry that I may miss important calls or messages. How is your experience on using the two devices together? Is Gear 2 a good supplement for note pro 12.2 LTE?

not sure on that one,, but have you seen the new gear S that is coming out? i would think that would be a better supplement as you will be able to have the sim card on it and bam, not going to miss call/message ;P

I've tried both the Gear 2 and the Gear S. If you've got the money, go for the Gear S. It lasts longer, works better and has a SIMslot. You can connect it to earphones for calls, and send text messages from it as well.
Bonus, it's fully removable from the wristband, so you can fit it into a pocket as well when you can't wear something on your wrist. (for instance, when you're wearing gloves.)

[Q] How is the Note 10.1 used as a phone?

Hi.
I'm kind of interested in using the galaxy note 10.1 as a replacement phone (weird, I know). How good is it as a phone? It does have built-in phone apps (messaging and calling) right? Will it survive the whole day being mostly in standby with 3g enabled? I am inclined to this than a galaxy note 2 since I am wary of AMOLED phones (LCDs last longer).
Thanks!
It will survive 3 days if You don't have it in continuous use .:laugh:
Yes, it has phone and messaging apps (GT-N8000 model). Standby is great, even with 3G enabled. Would probably last a week on standby if not used for other tasks. It definitely will last longer on standby than my Galaxy Note (phablet). For phone calls, I would suggest a headset, either wired or bluetooth.
Thanks for the replies. I'm somewhat seriously considering my crazy idea (help me) now if I can only sell my iPad 1 at a reasonable price. Oh well, I'll probably be swapping my sim between the note 10.1 and my xperia play on certain days. If only I could legally clone my sim.
Tethering internet from phone to tablet is some option - if you want to use the SIM card for internet. Using the tablet as phone could be fun though. The sound quality should be excellent.
I'm a bit pissed that ALL tablets don't have phone funtionality... They should be able to, why don't they enable this option....
This is what really made me want the note 10.1... I have an all in one item so don't have to worry about where my bloody phone is.... Much easier, and admit it, you can find a tablet easier than a phone if it gets misplaced(or the 2yo nephew decides its his and hides it on you)....
I have a SIM in my 10.1 that has the same phone number as my Galaxy III (it´s called "extra card" from my carrier)
In my office and at home I prefer to use now the 10.1 as my main phone since sound quality is much better over the speakers ,,,,,,,,,,,,
I just don't get the whole tablet as phone argument?
How often do you have your tablet with you that your phone isn't handy as well? Anyway, there are lots of apps that will allow you to make VOIP calls on your tablet.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2
For me it´s very simple: my SIII always slides out of my surgeons shirt pocket when I bow, the tablet is just nearby and when I receive a call the assistant presses answer-slider and I talk (I have nothing to hide).................
I LOVE that device, also Videocalls are MUCH nicer with the big screen ...................
Size DOES matter ! :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
Well to be honest, I'm only considering replacing my phone with a galaxy note 10.1 because phablet galaxy notes are AMOLED and I prefer LCD screens for their longer life. I'm just after drawing wherever I am with great accuracy (I tried drawing with a stylus on an ipad and quite frankly it sucks when compared to a wacom tablet)

Anyone coming from Gear S

I am curious to try smart watch. I am not sure which one to get, gear S or gear S2, How want to know about software expernece. I am okay with Gear S's size and feel S2 is little bit small for me. Please let me know if you have used both.
Don't waste money on the s2 until development of software is. I better s right now is a better buy

Spend your money on the S2. It's fantastic.
Coming from my beloved Gear S and I love the S2, it's great looking, looks like an actual watch and doesn't attract the attention that the Gear S did, which I didn't mind in the beginning but then got pretty annoyed with, but it was also huge which again I didn't mind cuz I'm a pretty big dude, but it was just a lot of watch lol. I've had the S2 since launch day and love it, only thing I miss is the speaker capabilities, but I'm gonna remedy that by grabbing the 3G model when it drops, I had a phone line on my Gear S, so I'm just gonna swap it over. For me it was a great switch, the apps are slim but I never got into apps on a watch, the functionality built in are what attract me to the Gears and Tizen.
Im with Dmac....I love my Gear S but every morning I wake up and find myself reaching for the Gear S2. The feel of the watch on your wrist just feels right and the flow of the operating system is amazing. Im not a huge app person so what it has right now is enough for me (except I cant wait for Samsung Pay!!). The user friendly notifications and ability to use the rotating bezel to read them just feels right. I also love big watches (30 of 36 watches are 48mm and bigger) so I do love the size of Gear S but it did get annoying with people always saying how big and stupid it looks. Unlike most people I dont need the speaker on the watch so Im ok with always having my cell phone in hand. The only annoying thing with the Gear S2 is S Voice. Samsung needs to update the program to work better and have better voice recognition since it is very hit or miss (mostly miss). The last HUGE plus on the Gear S2 is the battery life. If you make a few tweaks you can make it through a whole day plus as second.....the Gear S is not the same case. I was lucky to make it through an entire day.
Oh I did get a perfect condition refurb Verizon Gear S for $150 so if you can get the same price I did then I would say get both!! LOL!!
Think people just need to figure out if they want a smartwatch or a smartphone on their wrist. Different strokes...
I an on my third Gear. I had the Gear 1, 2, and now the S. IMO, the S2 like the Note 5, went backwards. In the past, when Samsung upgraded those two, I blindly would buy the upgrade on the strength that it has everything the previous model has and more. Not so, with the Note 5 and Gear S2.
The first bad mark, the S2 went down in size..Now, I hear talk of no speaker, OMG. I will give the S2 3g model a try, and that is about it. My Gear S does everything, with it own sim, it really is great. I can leave my phone home, and still good to go. Plus, I can show off my pictures, browse, and all.
IMO, the S2 should have been 25% bigger, about the size of a normal high end sportwatch. All models should have speakers too.
Samsung saved me about $1100 that was money for a Note 5 and the S2.
Bought Gear S new one from ebay for $200. It still has manufactures warranty left on it, will see how it work outs or go get gear s2 in future.
Bought the S2 and I'm happy with it. Just want a round watch with notifications.
Been using the Pebble before that.
Only complain is the vibration is a little weak.

I agree. I have just bought a Gear S2 classic and on opening the box I just thought it really needs to be bigger and if that were so it would easily take the place of my Gear S. I don't care about having lots of apps or a speaker but I do care about the size. I probably won't be keeping it.

Help me choose!

I'm planning to buy a smart watch and I had two options... The Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S2.
I've been a Samsung fan all my life despite the hiccups that you see every now and then.
After looking at some reviews I decided to go for the S2, BUT!... The fact that the watch doesn't have a speaker came like a shock to me. I don't want to use it to make calls from the watch itself, but I'm talking about notification sounds, alarms, etc... That when I started checking the 3G version of the S2 (which has a built-in speaker) but I can't find an international new one on Amazon.
When I checked Samsung's site, I found that the 3G version is sold by either Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T.
I don't live in the U.S. and in my country, the eSim is not supported yet but honestly I don't care about having an independent watch that can make calls without a phone. It would be nice to be able to accept/decline calls from the watch and then use the phone though.
Now that you heard my story, I want to know what to do to get a Gear S2 that has a speaker?
Thanks in advance.

Hey there! What phone do you have? If you have an iPhone, I suggest a product from the same company as the device. It's more expensive, but it will work perfectly. But if you have an Android phone, then I suggest the Gear S2 bluetooth, the Huawei Watch or the Moto 360 2gen. It doesn't have a speaker, but the vibration is pretty strong. I personally have a Samsung Gear S2 Bluetooth with a Galaxy S7 and it works perfectly. Also note that if you have an Android phone, you can't use the Apple Watch. Gear S2 is, I would say, for the sportier person. Apple Watch is for the more calm and "elegant" person. Also note that you have to get the 3G Gear S2 from a carrier, because it doesn't have a sim slot, but an integrated non-removable E-Sim, which is kind of a smaller chip than a normal Sim card.
So in the end, ios=Apple Watch and Android=Gear S2/Moto 360 2gen/Huawei Watch. I would highly suggest the Moto 360 2nd generation because you can customize it on Moto Maker. Also be aware that the Moto and Huawei run Android Wear whilst the Gear S2 runs Tizen. There are limitations though. If you want a Gear S2, you need Android 4.4.4 or higher and more than 1.5GB of RAM. If you want an Apple Watch though, it doesn't really do much. Also, Apple Watch runs Watch OS 2.
Hope I helped and I hope you make the right choice.

Thanks Fritz, you really added a lot!
I have a galaxy s5 and I'm planning to maybe upgrade to s7 in the near future (I'm also thinking about the iPhone 7 when it is released) that is why I wana choose the watch first then decide what phone I will buy later.
Since you have a Gear S2, I need to ask you some questions that I hope you have the answers to...
1- I heard that there is a problem that occurs sometimes with daily alarms. Sometimes it won't go off, did that happen to you?
2- Same thing for apps notifications, sometimes it doesn't work on the watch.
3- Can you accept/decline calls in the Bluetooth version then use your phone or a Bluetooth headset to speak?
4- If I get the 3G version somehow while I don't live in the U.S., am I going to be able to use it normally or I'm gonna have troubles with un-needed payments and stuff like that?
Thanks again.

Hello again! If you have a Gear S2 with a Galaxy S5, it will work fine. Now, the alarms and notifications will work but you won't be able to visualize everything on your watch, so be aware that you will need to view most of the notifications on your phone. For example, if you have instagram or a social media account (twitter, facebook, ect..) it will say that you have a new notification. If, however, you get a text message (Whatsapp, messenger, hangouts, viber, ect..), you will be able to respond to it with emoticons, pre loaded quick messages or using a classic T9 keyboard (I prefer the T9). The main issue here is the calling. If you do not have a bluetooth headset, you won't be able to recieve or make calls. If you choose the previous Gear (Samsung Gear S), you will be able to insert a nano sim into the watch itself (it has a slot at the back) and make calls, browse the internet or even play games. It's practically a mini smartphone. Anyways, coming back to our Gear S2, if you get the 3G model without contract, you will probably be able to use it bluetooth, but I'm not sure about the calling feature...
Don't get the Apple Watch, but consider the Moto 360 2nd generation. It's roughly the same price but comes with Android Wear. But if you really want a Samsung wearable, consider the Gear S too. It's got a bigger screen, a bigger battery and a speaker so you can make calls. The only con here is that it costs a bit more than the Gear S2, but it has more features. If you want more features but more bulk, get the Gear S. If you want design, lightness but no calling, get the Gear S2. Always consider the Moto 360 2.
Hope I helped, Fritz_Frigursson

Please also note that the Gear S3 will be launched in September, so look out for that too. That has 3G connectivity, GPS and Samsung Pay. If you want the Gear S2, it's a pretty good smartwatch, but the Gear S3 has more to offer. You can also make calls with the S3.
Also, it comes in 2 variants: Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. I would get the frontier, because it has 3G connectivity.

what smartwatch?

Hi guys,
I'm in the market for a new smartwatch to pair with my note 9.I previously owned a gear s3 which i sold when i switched to iphone?.
I know there is the galaxy watch right now but i saw that there is not much of a difference with the old gear s3.
What do you guys reccomend?go for android wear or get the new galaxy watch?
Thanks
I never had a gear S3, but I have the Galaxy Watch. I've been using it for 13 hours and the battery is at 88%. I don't know if the S3 can hang like that. I've changed watch faces 50 times, downloaded a dozen and have been responding to texts and messing around with all day, etc. This is my first smartwatch, I'm beyond happy so far.

I think the Galaxy Watch is capable of four days use before charging, sounds like that's holding up easily considering the heavy usage on opening day.
I'd consider it, but I still have a Gear S2 that's rollin' along & even further back, a Gear 2, the latter is my fave, what's not to like in a watch that has a camera & an I-R Blaster, LOL....
JMHO, Samsung rules the Android compatible smart watch world, I've had two Android/Google wear watches & both were a mess, hardware & software.
My main use for smart watches is notifications, beats the Hell outta reaching for the phone on every incoming text or email alert.
Enjoy the new watch.

I had the s3 frontier until last week and then I purchased the new Galaxy watch on the day of release. I miss the ability to use Samsung pay on any pay terminal since the S3 had MST in it. The Galaxy does look a bit better ( I have the 46mm) but I am not certain it is a worth while upgrade from the s3. Also when they are back in stock at my local BB I will be returning mine due to a battery charging issue (is it ok now) as well a red dot that appeared on the screen after charging stopped. I am still deciding as to swap back to the s3 or give the galaxy watch another chance.

Thanks! Its now at 75% with no features turned off except screen timeout at 15 seconds. Wake gestures on and I'm at 75% battery after 24 hours. Still playing with it a lot more than normal once the honeymoon period wears off. I'd say with heavy use I'll get 4 days, maybe more with light use?
I have the Casio ProTrek WSD-F20 in White. Great watch nice and rugged loads of features

Question Is it worth upgrading to the GW4 (in Canada)?

Been following this forum for a bit, and would like to hear views on whether the GW4 is worth the upgrade from the Gear S3 Frontier, particularly in Canada, where several of the GW4's features (e.g., BP, ECG) are currently not enabled. Now, before anyone says that the Gear S3 is 'years old' etc., please understand that I have changed the batteries on my two Gear S3s, and I currently get almost four days of use from each. Of course, I could charge every night as I do with my phone - but I like not having to worry about battery life and fewer cycles means longer overall battery life. I must admit I like the chunkier look of my Gear S3, the wider bands (of which I have several extras), and the available apps and watch faces (I mostly use my watch for notifications, taking calls when on the bike, and Samsung Pay). Speaking of Samsung Pay, don't forget the Gear S3 has MST - which still comes in handy when NFC tap fails. I didn't upgrade to the original Galaxy Watch, as I saw no advantage to doing so, nor with the GW3. I was really looking forward to the GW4 - but not gonna lie, with the daintier look of the 'Classic,' those cheap skinny bands, the mediocre battery life, and the lack of functionality in Canada, I'm having a hard time making the case for it. Your thoughts?
I can't comment on upgrading, but BP and ECG work fine on Canadian models. You just have to install a modified version of Samsung Health Monitor on both the watch and your phone. Measuring BP requires access to a cuff-based BP machine for initial calibration.
As for battery life, I have turned off things like always on display and lift to wake, but keep the sensors on constantly and can squeeze out roughly 3 days use. I could probably get it up to 4 days by disabling other features infrequently used, but that will depend on your needs.
I was really on the fence with all the reported bugs. I just found an open box deal at BB for $249+tax for the GW4 44mm (fka Active). Yes, BB Canada! I have an old S3 Frontier but it got slow so I moved onto the Active and I liked it better on the wrist, especially for running.
Anyway, no brainer at that price.

Thanks, I'm actually eyeing Best Buy's current deal of $100 off if you trade in any working smartwatch. Of course, I would not trade my Gear S3 Frontier for that price, so I grabbed a cheapo smartwatch on AliExpress for about $10. Even so, my Frontier still works fine, battery is great, and it does what I need it to do - so I'm still struggling to justify the expense.

Thanks, that's what I thought - which is a shame, as I like the Gear S3 charger better.
While I'm not in Canada I still have the same issues with BP and ECG not working because I do not have a Samsung phone. As TacoDeMuerte mentioned this can be circumvented. I have not done so yet but I plan to. Even without those features I'm very happy with the upgrade (coming from a Galaxy Watch 1). Coming from a Gear 3 I think the Watch4 Classic gives you the pros of:
Being "daintier". I know this does not seem like a positive to you but for me it is. Less issues with long sleeve shirts hanging up with watch. Less issues with putting backpacks on, etc. The Galaxy Watch 1 is very similar in size to the Gear 3. With the Watch 1 I always had these issues. I'm very much liking the Watch4 being a bit slimmer and smaller than my Watch 1 (and lighter).
Bluetooth 5.0 vs. 4.2. More data and further range. I do not use wifi on Watch4 (or previously on Watch1) so this is a big deal for me. The distance I have been from phone with Watch4 and still getting notifications is crazy.
16GB 1.5GB RAM vs. 4GB 768MB RAM
Exynos W920 (5 nm) vs. Exynos 7 Dual 7270 (14 nm). I imagine this watch is significantly more responsive than the Gear 3.
Bigger and higher res screen. 1.4" (450x450) vs 1.3" (360 x 360).
More water resistant. 50m vs. 1.5 m.
Corning Gorilla Glass DX vs. Corning Gorilla Glass SR+
Better GPS: A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS vs. just GLONASS.
Android Wear OS, One UI Watch 3 vs. Tizen. There is still a lot that needs to be worked out here but ultimately I think this will be a pro.
Cons:
Clearly battery time. I was getting 4+ days with my Watch 1. With Watch4 I'm typically getting 2+ days. I have had over 3 days on 2 charges but I was not very active. I have had less than 2 days on only 2 occasions. While this is a bummer I have adjusted. Would I trade a thicker Watch4 with more battery time for the current watch? Probably not . I'm fine with battery time. I'm not streaming music to my watch though.
No MST though I have never used the Samsung Pay feature so this does not impact me.

Thanks so much for this, @fliptwister, really appreciate the effort you put into this, and I think you sum up the pros and cons very well! I agree with each of your points and, with respect to MST, as I mentioned in a separate post, I'm thinking its loss may not be so bad after all, as I have a theory that MST may actually be contributing to some of those point-of-sale tap fails. In any event, I think on balance you're right, so now I'm looking at taking advantage of the current discount on offer at Best Buy ($100 off with trade in) as well as selling one of my Gear S3s for a GW4 Classic 46mm. Thanks again!

No, you can't use the Gear S3 charger to charge the GW4.

Dang, when I read your reply, I thought 'Great! I had wanted to use my Gear S3 charger!' But when I put my GW4 Classic 46mm on it, it starts to charge, then I get a flashing red light...so I'm assuming it's not compatible with the Classic 46mm?

Very possible, I had the gear s3 classic 45mm and went to the regular GW4 44mm. I didn't bother opening the new charger when I saw it was identical in size/shape/design. Theyre the exact same charger for me, are your two chargers diffferent in any way?
Edit: I checked and the model number on the back of the 2 chargers are the exact same. EP-OR825

I think you might be referring to the Galaxy Watch 3 charger? The Gear S3 charger is a completely different (and better, IMHO) beast.
