Last weekend i dropped my nexus 5 in the water during a night out. After a few days drying in a sealed box with rice I turned it back on and it seemed fine. Unfortunaly after a few hours after rebooting it stopped working. When plugging in the battery logo pops up and the little logo with battery % comes up but remains at zero after charging for a while.
I'm running slimkat and when i boot into recovery while plugged in it works fine. Just managed to boot it up but in the start screen it says I should connect the charger while the battery circle is turning like it is plugged in and it turned off.
I'm guessing there is a promblem with the charging port or battery. Anyone who has experience with this? should i open my nexus up and get a new charging port/battery? I ordered a wireless charger which should arrive somewhere next week, i guess i can check if the battery is the problem.

Water can damage just about anything in a phone...And trying to troubleshoot it can be impossible and costly. Best to save your money and put it towards a new device, instead of replacing hardware ....just to find out something else is still wrong after replacing a component.

The motherboard is probably fried lol why would you use it when it's still wet

I let it dry for 6 days
Does it turn on? Yes? Then it isn't bricked or close to being bricked.

True. But it sounds damaged...And it's usually a waste of money replacing hardware trying to fix.

I'll second it. Pretty pointless to try to salvage a water damaged device due to the plethora of things that could've gone wrong!

Hi guys!
I'm Running Leedroid 2.3.0 on my sensation since 2.3.0 was released.
I'm CWM v4.0.1.4 (charging fixed! blue text) on it.
The Phone ran perfect until yesterday. I didn't overclock and didn't do any other special tweaks, i used it as it was.
Yesterday i used google maps navigation for about 5 - 10 minutes. after that the phone was really hot. I stopped navigation and killed google maps with the stock task manager.
I put the phone into my pocket, about 20min later i noticed the phone turned off. it was still a little bit warm.
Now the phone doesn't turn on anymore. when i plug in the charger, nothing happens. not even the orange led turns on. absolutely nothing.
i've tried all combinations off pulling the battery, left it out for som time and plug it in again. try to charge....
No chance - the phone seems to be dead.
I've got no idea if it is a hardware or a software problem. how can i find out?

I think my warranty is void by rooting and flashing the custom rom.
You should check first if the Battery or the phone is the problem. Try getting another battery that u can try out. If it is not working, then probably your phone is dead. However, I would replace it with warranty. Since it's dead they can not turn it on and check if u modded it. Maybe they can detected that if they would take out the mainboard and connect it to some JTAG device, but I'm 99.9% sure they will not do this. Imagine the costs of doing this with every phone they get for replacement... It's not easy to detect if the Software on the phone was manipulated once the phone is dead due to a hardware defect.
What you can also try ist connect it to usb port on PC and try turning on. Does the PC detect anything?
PC doesn't detect anything.
I tried another battery today, same problem.
Do you think it is a hardware problem?
It may have gotten so hot it damaged some of the hardware. Like he said up there ^ take it to Tmobile and ask them to replace it. These things are notorious for overheating anyways so your story will be believable.

agreed. warranty, warranty, warranty
i think it is best for you to bring back to the tmobile store to get it check or get a new replacement. dont answer too much questions if they ask because they might try to look for away to void your warranty or refuse for service.
I'll bring it to t-mobile tomorrow.

When I turn my phone off, entirely (even after removing/re-inserting the battery) the charge animation still appears, signifying there is still some battery drain occurring....and it really does, too. It lasts for about a week in this state from fully charged, to entirely dead. This isn't the most concerning part, though....the only logical assumption is that the phone actually thinks it's being charged
I've done a FULL wipe of all partitions and a factory flash, but that hasn't helped....any suggestions? It's pretty annoying that if I don't want the battery to discharge I have to actually unplug the battery entirely, even in a full power-off state (or at least as fully powered off as this particular phone can get at the moment)

It's well out of warranty, I'm not paying to have it fixed, and there is no way anyone at Samsung that will get on the phone to help me will be of any more assistance than I will find here

Yes, my current phone is a Nexus 4. The phone with issues is a NS4G and I dropped sprint like a bad habit earlier this year, so it's just a reference device now.
Uhmmm... Dust into connector? Since the current pins are hard wired to the recharge circuit, maybe there's a short and the battery it's powering it up.

Thanks for the input Dust has occurred to me in the past, and I've done a fair job of cleaning it. Just for the sake of saying I did it, I dusted it again, and this time I even unscrewed the back cover and dusted everything I could reach...much more of a teardown and I'm wandering down a road I don't want to go down....reassembly isn't my strong point. I can take anything apart without a problem...putting it back together is another story entirely lol
Anyway, I cleaned everywhere I could reach thoroughly...still happening, unfortunately.

I know there are many threads about this but some didn't cover my questions and they don't say what to do when you have done things you aren't supposed to do.
So I dropped it in the toilet, I don't even know how but as soon as I did I took it straight out, dried it with a towel and TRIED TO TURN IT ON AND CHARGE IT. I later found out that I shouldn't have done these things. Anyway afterwards I put it in a container of rice with the lid shut. It seems to be much drier now but still isn't working, however the computer makes a sound when I plug it in. I then went and took the back cover off and saw one of the wires (on the right side) seemed to have a busted resistor, I was wondering if that was the problem and it could be fixed?
P.S. When I charge it all I get is a red light.
I'm from Australia so country related help would be great.
UPDATE: I just plugged it into the computer again and the screen seemed to light up a bit for about 30 seconds and the phone vibrates when I hold the power button.
UPDATE 2: I can hear noises like the screenshot noise and the volume up and down noise.
You forget tot wipe the sh!t of. What about the rice? Stil beable to eat it? Or taste it like sh!t? Wrong forum btw.

I am getting notifications and the notification LED is working but the screen just lights up without anything on it.
Keep it a few more days in the rice. I hope you didn't fried it. Do not try to charge or connect to pc yet, don't power on for some time. After 2 or 3 days on rice, try to start it up. If it vibrates but not starting you need to wait some more time on rice or just go to a repair shop. Don't try to charge the damn thing !!!
I had to keep my x10i about 7 days on rice, I almost abandoned it, but it's working just fine now.

Thank you, I just took it off charging straight away. Is there a specific way I should do the rice and will it still work if I have been charging it but it still vibrates etc as you described?
Rule number 1 after dropping electronics in water:
turn off and leave to dry for at least 3 days before turning on again.
If you follow this rule, you'll have luck in 80% of the cases.

I know but seeing as I already broke that rule, is there much hope with this?
Should be completely covered in rice. Vertical positioning is recommended, keeping about 2 or 3 centimeters from the botom of the jar ( or bag or whatever ). Shake it slowly every day then put it back on rice. I have no idea if it will work or not, even without charging it, it's about how much water got inside.

Ok, thanks, I don't think very much water got inside, when I opened it there was just a bit on the back cover and some condensation on the front-facing camera.
I hope you get lucky. I didn't disassemble mine completely, just the back cover, battery, sim and SD card, but it wasn't a nexus.

Search for threads about how to clean the board with alcohol so it doesn't corode.
More than likely you're out of luck cause you turned it on and even plugged it in directly after. It's likely shorted out now.

It seems like everything but the screen is working. As I said it seems like a resistor blew, couldn't I just replace that little cable?

I had to leave my sons iPod touch in rice for two weeks before it finally fired up and started working as normal (even after I charged it and switched it on as soon as it hit wet)

Maybe your screen it's dead, you should change it
Hello. I recently bought a Nexus 5 (like 2 days ago) and I'm having some issues with the touchscreen. When my battery gets to 25% or lower, the screen goes mental. The so called ghost-touches are getting a hold of it and I can barely do anything. Today the battery got to 10% and the touchscreen 'dieded', as in I couldn't even unlock the screen. It did show some minimal movement but that was it. After I plugged in the charger everything went back to normal and the touchscreen acted like it should, no ghost-touches or anything.
Someone told me this problem might have something to do with some battery saving settings, but I couldn't find any kind of option similar to that. Any thoughts? Can I fix it somehow? Is it a general Nexus 5 problem? Should I send the phone back to warranty? Thanks.

There are no battery saving settings. What's happening to you is not normal. I've been reading this forum for a year and never seen anyone with this issue.
I've seen it when charging off a cheap cable but not whilst discharging. I would consider returning it. Its clearly a fault
My Nexus 5 fell in a lake months a go. I opened it up, cleaned it with 70% alcohol but nothing changed, not even charging. Left it for some more months. Ordered a new battery and getting 90% alcohol soon. Is too late to re-do the process?
Is probably too late. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind residue that corrodes the internal components.

Here are pics of the internals. I've used a soft toothbrush and 91% alcohol to clean them. Let them dry. Used the original to charge, nothing. Replaced the battery with a new one, nothing also.
Any other ideas?
Time to replace motherboard?

OK, I'll get one off AliExpress, the original was 16gb, would it matter if I opt for a 32gb motherboard?
Go for 32 if it's not much more.
It's still possible that something else is damaged.

I understand that everything looks fine but something must be wrong since it doesn't boot.
At this point, it may be better to get another phone?

I really like the form factor.
I like the form factor too but it could be the motherboard, screen, and even the usb flex cable.
Maybe try and find a cheap used Nexus 5 to replace your phone?

this is what i'm going to do. Curious, do you still use the nexus 5 till this day?
I have a Nexus 5 but it needs a power button replacement.
My current phone is an iPhone 6s.
