PLEASE use search before posting "How to root (insert phone model & version here)". There are literally dozens of posts that actually answer your question. Have a good day..
EDIT: I'll throw you a bone; there are currently no free methods for unlocking Ultra/Maxx phones at the moment
I'll do one better there are currently no root methods free or paid if your on 4.4.4.

Looking in my crystall ball, I believe that it will come unlocked directly from Verizon.
No really - there isnĀ“t even 5.0 for the other variants and thus nobody can know for sure. On the other hand 5.0 brings additional security measures, so there is no reason to believe it will be any easier to root than it was before.
And one more thing - did you see the sticker "NO QUESTIONS in This Forum"? Not only is this question pointless, but it is in the wrong forum as well...

I currently own a Motorola XT 1080 (also known as Motorola Droid Maxx). I have spent about two weeks now trying to root my phone using guides I have found on here and other sites. However I keep running into either a problem with the guide being for android version 2.2 or earlier, or it not applying to my specific device. I am very new to all this, however I do understand what rooting means. If someone could type up or direct me to a guide for my device using android version 4.4.4 I would really appreciate it.

Hello! I have been running CM12 (lollipop 5.0.1) on my XT926 for months now, only updated it once from the original version posted. I decided to update it again because a few things have become wonky; however, it seems the thread no longer exists. AM I GOING CRAZY?!?! Did it ever exist? Did it have to get taken down? Can someone please fill me in? I have absolutely been ENTHRALLED with this ROM and do not want to put something else on here if an updated version of CM12 is floating around here somewhere. I saw Validus is on here, which will serve as my next ROM if this has ceased to exist. Any info is much appreciated!
Thanks!

You probably flashed DHackers version. It was originally linked via his twitter account. Just google dhacker cm12. You'll find the updated ROM
Right on, thanks!

There is no way to downgrade if you're locked. Please search next time, this has been asked and answered a lot.

I'm looking for a new phone for under $200. Refurbished. I was looking at Droid turbo, but I can't find one that hasn't already been updated and I want to unlock bootloader and root. Can anyone recommend a phone that I should look at that can be rooted?

I just bought a used XT1254 /Turbo on eBay that was still on KitKat, flashed to version of Lollipop that works with Sunshine, and now running CM13
doesn't help you, but it's still possible
all firmware versions for moto X (2014) can be unlocked with sunshine app
I almost bought one of those instead

OP might help to review **DEVICE SUGGESTION THREAD** -- Not sure what device to buy? Ask here!
Do please post there.

Hey XDA friends, wife's XT1030 (mini) just started randomly going nuts, probably an issue with the digitizer. Ordere a new-old-stock XT1030 (mini) online and it just arrived.
Her previous was updated to the max to SU6-7.7 which I gather can't be rooted. I myself have a Moto X developer edition so I do what I want on it but I'm not versed in the XT1030 (mini).
New one is on SU6-7.2 and 24.13.2.obakem_verizon.Verizon.en.us
Do I have to downgrade to SU6-7 to be able to root or can I root on what I'm at now? If downgrade, anyone have a link/video?
Also, as far as unlocking the bootloader, I assume I either have to use Sunshine (pay software, right?) or is there another method out there?
Thanks,
Mike
