cant transfer files nexus 7 - General Questions and Answers

Ok guys I am pretty new to this all this so please bear with me with my bad words. I decided to install a custom rom on to my nexus 7 http://nexus7root.com/nexus-7-roms/c...4multi-window/ (mind you I had a rooted kitkat os installed on my tablet before hand) I installed it and everything went fine. Porblem is when I plug my nexus 7 into my computer, the 26 gigs of space I should have (you know so you can do file management droping pics and vids and such) was not there. I dont understand, no matter what computer I was using ANYWHERE I was always able to simply plug my tablet in and start file management. What am I doing wrong? do i need to install drivers ON the nexus 7? if you say I need to install drivers on to my p.c then please explain (weather it was linux or windows I could do file management on there computer with out having to install anything ahead of time.) so what gives? please help.

Okay, you wont need a driver for your Nexus on ANY PC for file transfer as it's just detected as a mass drive (Any drivers required will be automatically installed)
When you installed this custom ROM did you repartition it and when you plug it into the PC does it pop up about mass media storage modes ?

Thanks for the fast reply....NO i did not re partition it and how do i go about doing that ( I unlocked and rooted my nexus 7 1 year ago, its has been a long time) I simply took the ROM droped it into my tablets file. ran TWRP and press the ok button to install. thats it. my pc notify my that something has been install, when I go to control panal and file management, it see my nexus 7 with a yellow "!" on it. something about drivers. I tried to uninstall and re install but no luck. if you check out my link too you can see rom I put on. Did I answer your question?

[Q] Total Noob in Need of Lots of Help :(

I just got my SNS yesterday and it's my first android phone (was previously using an LG cookie) First thing I did was try to root it, and I seemingly succeeded, or so I thought. It looks like it's rooted and the superuser apps there but I can't install apps using any of the guides I find or even update to 2.3.2 (keep getting and error 7 msg). When I try to install using APKInstaller it tells me it can't find the device, which I think is the problem.
I think the problem is that someway or another windows 7 64 bit stopped recognizing my phone as a Nexus S and now recognizes it as a portable device in device manager (There's also an Android Phone, with an Android Composite ADB interface) I used the SDK to install all the updates available including the google usb driver rev. 4. I tried updating the Portable device driver using the google usb driver but windows keeps it as a WPD Filesystem Volume Driver. Also I noticed when I checked to see if adb gave me a serial number for the phone using the cmd prompt commands in the rooting guides it comes up blank.
I used usbdeview to delete everything seemingly related to Android, but everytime I reconnect the phone it, installs the drivers for the portable device.
I need help to make windows recognize the phone as a nexus s again so I can update and install apps and games etc. If anybody out there can help i'll really appreciate it. Explain the steps to me as if you were talking to a child, leaving nothing out plz. Thanks for any assistance.
I live outside the US (no android market) and would hate to think I messed up and expense phone purchase in just one day
Not quite sure where to start. But my intuition tells me its the Windows 7 64-bit and drivers that's not playing along. You might want to google if other users are having trouble with W7 64-bit with Android drivers. Otherwise, find another computer and repeat the steps. If not, flash a custom ROM to see if that eliminates the problem. You haven't damaged your phone. Don't worry.
just install directly from android market website
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I assume you mean instal the update from the market (which I can't do because I don't have wifi)?
I managed to get the adb to list a device number after I installed java x32 & x64 bit. I still can't install apps or get the update to work, but I'll try unrooting and then rerooting my phone as see how that goes.
Oh, I haven't done the initial sign into gmail thing yet in case that makes any difference
Edit: god I feel stupid. I didn't realize that I had to upgrade from 2.3 to 2.3.1 and then to 2.3.2. I did that an everything upgrade without any problems. Now just got to figure out how to install apk's and I'm golden
Edit 2: Ok, I figured everything out and now i'm up to date with updates and I can install apps and games. Oh Happy Day Thx for all the help

[Q] Why can I no longer mount usb

I have erased the contents of the phones internal USB storage. Now I notice that I cant mount to my PC.
Anybody know what happening or had same problem
Have you already tried formatting with CWM?
Perhaps this thread contains some useful information for you.

Typed it in and got nothing. Using the android dialler when I pressed the last * the dialer cleared and did nothing.
Just installed the SDK so I could use (hopefully) ADB. When trying to install the Google driver rev4 windows says that rev 4 is no better than the one currently installed.
Also when I connect to the PC it says that the USB device is not recognised either.
I reckon my next thing to try flashing a new Rom via ROM manager.
well that didnt work in fact it has got considerably worse. I used ROM manager to download and install a new rom but didnt install the Gapps how daft do I feel now cos all I got is version of Blandroid running with no Android Market access to download ROM Manager.
I can access my WiFi network so I thought I would simply visit XDA via the mobile browser and download a fresh version of CM7 and then re-flash via ClockworkMod . However all I get is download fail error. I guess it doesn't know where to save the file.
So to recapp I have the following
a Nexus S (running Blandroid ROM)
a Win XP laptop that does not recognise my Nexus S (therefore cant install the Google driver to use ADB)
The Nexus S recovery is ClockworkMod and accessible.
I cannot accept that it is bricked (not just yet anyway)
I have another Laptop with Ubuntu installed. Will this help me in anyway to find a fix. I am not that experienced in Linux unfortunately.
1
i have the same problem. only thing you can try is.
pull out battery. let something metal touch the usb conecter .conecting the metal to a unload source(for static electricity.)
wait couple of hours, and try again.
if that didnt work.
2
open your nexus.
unplug all cables and screws from the main board.
again touch the usb conecter with something metal that has a ground source.
and try again.
the last step worked for me the 1st time pluging it in after i did that.
after that. usb didnt work again.
it probably has to do something with the usb phone charger and static electricity.
but i havent tested it.
will give that a try when I have a bit more time.
In the meantime I have been setting up ADB on my other laptop running Ubuntu 11.04. But unfortunately the Nexus S didnt register on the OS either. I thought you didnt need additional drivers for Linux only windows! I am really puzzled now as I thought the Linux option would have allowed me to flash a different ROM other than Blandroid (which isnt bad its just I dont have the Gapps installed)

you still have wifi/3G and CWM or bloothoot?
download the Gapps zip. put it on dropbox or any hosting site.download it trough your mobile browser and flash it trug CWM.
or use blutethoot to download it.
might be a short fix.until you get USB to work.
(this is how i do it cuz my usb doesnt work.)
I did try that but for some reason after stating that the download had started - Download Unsuccessful was displayed in the notification area. As useual I open a door only to find a brick wall on the other side.
In the meantime I am back with my HTC Hero.
Thanks for helping anyway!

try difrent download solutuins.
seeing you have HTC here.why not tranver your zip trug your hero to your Ns?(with bluethoot)
boy, i hope you haven't started tearing your phone apart yet...
since you still have access to cwm: try to format your sdcard with it. looks like you haven't done that yet.
I would try to uninstall all drivers and associated programs on your PC. Then reinstall the drivers. Windows can be very finicky as you know. Also try PDANET drivers.

The NS wouldn't connect to laptop with Ubuntu running. I am beginning to think that I have a faulty micro USB port.
Ill try the pdanet drivers later tonight - are they different from the google rev 4 drivers?

Same PC with dual boot? Yeah, try another cord and a another PC. The fact that you plugged it in and it's recognized in some way in the tray says something is fubar. I just don't know if it is the phone though. Best of luck.
Nah, different laptop and different cable. Hope that it charges OK. Gonna have to get a WiFi file transfer app working to move files to and from.
glad to help out :3
there are allot of people that have this USB isue and its HW NS related. nothing we actually can do about it.plus it also happens after changing kernels and roms(i supose) overclocking might be 1 of the reasons thus the voltages not being original.
btw, sorry for my half assed english x3

Having the same issue. I tried that, no such luck.
My computer *did* connect at one point though... couldn't mount USB storage (wasn't prompted) but it did ask for a driver, and currently has a Samsug USB one installed. It won't accept the SDK driver (not 64-bit capable? Or NS4G? Idk...)

[Q] SK4G not being recognized on PC

I originally posted this inside the Glorious Overdose V2 thread, but decided to post here as well.
For some reason my computer won't recognize my Sidekick when I plug it in via usb. I do have the samsung drivers installed and it will read my friends Samsung Droid Charge just fine, but when I plug my Sidekick in it comes up saying "USB Device Not Recognized". So far I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers from the device manager to no avail. Wondering if anyone has an idea as to what it could be. I've also tried googling the solution and everyone says to just uninstall and reinstall the drivers and it should work. Now the phone is not plugged into a USB Hub, extender, or case, it is plugged directly into a usb port on the mother board.
PC Specs just in case:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-970A-D3
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU - AMD FX-4100
Memory - 8GB DDR3 1066
Phone:
T-Mobile Sidekick 4G running Glorious Overdose V2
Nothing added just the rom and some apps/games.
I have tried with USB Debugging on and off, either way does not work.
Update: I have since tried Kies mini, as well as the drivers found on Softpedia. Neither of those worked, so I just got done reformatting and reinstalling Windows hoping that would work. At first it did not, right now I am running windows update to see if that was the issue, I'll update of what the outcome is.
Update: After installing all available Windows updates it's still not recognizing the phone. Now no matter what it's saying it's an Unknown Device. Even after I try and do a manual driver update and tell it to look in the folder with the driver files from Softpedia. I'm at a complete loss now.
If anyone has any idea's please let me know.
What mode do you have the phone in? Settings->Applications->USB Settings. It should be in Mass Storage if you want to access its SD Card.
Maybe put another rom on the sd card and flash something else, I don't think it would be a rom issue but it would be worth a try?

It's set to USB Debugging. But even then, it should read as something else other then Unknown Device when I plug it in. I have tried plugging it in and selecting Mass Storage, still comes up as Unknown Device.

I've thought about that, and from everything I can see it's either the ROM or the drivers. So we'll see...I'll probably try a different ROM and see what happens.
I suggest turning USB debugging off and mass storage on, for how you'll be using it. And recall that you have to change this stuff with the USB cable unplugged.
I've tried that, and after talking with the T2 Technical Support from Samsung for 45min today, the only option left is to send the phone in to get worked on. Though, I'm going into the T-Mobile store and see if they can't replace the phone or give me a loner while this one is out getting repaired.
More info request.

This is the exact drivers I pulled off of my own machine, I ran into massive issues with those same driver packages, especially in getting the initial root to take with a few different utilities designed to grant sudo/su/root access, and these are the drivers I have running currently, just pulled off my own machine. I run Windows 7 x64, but as well, there should be no reason why these drivers wouldn't work on a x86 machine and/or OS.

Thank you, I tried unpacking them to a folder on C:\ went into Device Manager, right clicked on the Unknown Device, Update Driver Software..., Browse My Computer for Driver Software, Set the search to C:\, and still saying Unknown Device is the best driver software for it. No idea why it's doing this.
Proper Driver Update
What is going on is that Windows is seeing a more recent signature file attached to the SK4G drivers on your computer (I don't believe anything at all is wrong with your device) than the working ones there.
First, in Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the Samsung Kies and Samsung Driver pack you installed earlier. Now...
Go into on your PC:
://windows/system32
And locate the same file names, cut them all, and paste them in a temporary folder you create, preferably on the desktop or something similar. You may not find every file, and that's okay, just the ones you can find. Next, you will be wanting to paste the driver files from the package I uploaded. Now, turn off Automatic Updates, so it doesn't automatically install drivers upon connection. Reboot the computer, double check and make sure Automatic Upates are off when you log back on. Now, connect the device and see if it gives you the same results. By removing the old drivers which don't work, you'll be able to force it to the ones we know work, and you /should/ have success. As well - USB data debugging active and activating connection for data transfer via the notification pulldown menu would be the best way to do this initially.
Would I be looking in c:\windows\system32\drivers for the same file names as the ones you packed up?
Ok, so the only one I could find in the drivers folder was modem.sys. But it will not let me move/replace the one that's already in there. It's telling me access is denied, same thing when I try and set the permissions it will not let me. I am logged in as an Administrator, as well it says it when I log in as THE Administrator account. So yeah...
Cool - modem.sys is a stock one that is shared with the device, so that's fine.
With the other two programs uninstalled, the old drivers uninstalled, and forcing it into those by pasting them into //win/sys32/drivers you should be in business. Hmm. You can try UnlockRoot.com's device rooter - I know they have an auto driver detector in their program. As well, you can try SuperOneClick, but I don't remember if they do or no. What about going in from the Recovery menu and toggling USB? Anything wierd going on in the /mounts? What about ADB shell access from the Android SDK on Windows?

I tried plugging the phone in, still showing up as Unknown Device. Tried UnlockRoot.com's program, no change. Installing the Android SDK right now, as well as I tried deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, and no change with that either. Once I'm done installing the Android SDK I'll redelete the INFCACHE.1 file and restart and try the phone again.
I did go in and check the mounts in recovery and they were set to:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
UNMOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Thank you for your help so far.
UPDATE: So after installing the Android SDK, deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, restarting, and then plugging the phone in, comes up and says the USB Device is Not Recognized. Then goes to search the preconfigured driver folders, and fails to install the driver for Unknown Device. And ADB Devices shows no devices as well(didn't think it would, but yeah).
UPDATE: So after using my friends phone as a conduit to throw the Stock Odexed KJ2 w/ Root(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328698) onto my SDCard and flashing that the phone seemed to go into a soft brick at pre-boot screen(where it says SAMSUNG T-Mobile blah blah blah). Mind you this would freeze before it was even able to get into recovery. So I took it into T-Mobile and they are doing a manufacturer warranty replacement. So hopefully this next phone will be able to connect to the computer and be read correctly.

Can't copy large files to phone

Hey guys
I been unable to copy large files to my phone or the sd card while i use the mtp or camera method. I can copy small files without a problem, but when the file is 100mb or larger i will always get an error. Is there any fix for this?
I attached a picture of the error i get.
I just copied a 350MB file and played it back w/o any problems via USB.
How are you copying the file (USB/WiFi/?) and what platform/tools are being used?
I'm using windows 7 x64 server pack 1. I'm using the original usb it came it but no luck. Tried my nexus usb and still same problem. I always get that error. I can cope other files under 100mb without a problem.
Edit: I try to copy it by my computer were the device appears, do I need a software to copy files?

Welcome to the wonders of mtp!
Are you copying to the sd card? If so it could be a bad card. If it happens on internal storage also ..well you now know why mtp suxs ass.
You might want to try the usb storage mod although that only works for the sd card.
And no you should not need any special software mtp is supported in win7

I was having the same issue. was pissing me off so badly. my problem was I was using the front USB on my computer. ( I built my own) So I switched it to a port in the back of the computer and it works no problems now. Was weird.....
I'm having the same problem on a mac laptop. I haven't tried a different computer but on the same mac, i didn't have problems with MTP on Galaxy Nexus.
It took some cursing and persistence to transfer my songs over...

GS3 is a crap I sell it for Xperia S. I wish I bought the Xperia S first. GS3 is too expensive and found out that Xperia S has better screen, camera.. And regarding the Quad Core of GS3, It doesn't do much compare to Xperia S, dual core is enough, Quad Core is their advertisement to sell their phones. Multitasking in Xperia S is enough. Opening 10 apps at the same time to make the Quad Core fully functional?? WTF 10 apps at the same time?!?
Carefully check
This error indicates that the GSIII is refusing to have crap music put on it.
I got it to work connecting it on a usb port on the back of my pc and by re-installing the drivers a few times. The copying speed is very slow compared to my old phone. Thanks for the help guys.

Please help me! Can't connect my Nexus 5 to USB

I just got my Nexus 5 today, and I am trying to put things on the internal memory of the phone. However everytime I plug it in to install the drivers automatically, it says an error occurred during installation, and kicks me back out, and refuses to work. I use Windows XP still, 32 bit, and it asks me to search the web etc for hardware, and it never finds anything.
Does anyone know how to connect this thing? :'( I tried on my Windows 7 laptop too and same problem, except this time it worked as an SD card, but in the bootloader to root the phone it fails to install?

The mtp divers on xp can be a pain.. have a search for a thread that is somewhere on here, it covers most of the problems on xp

I have a Windows XP PC too and have MTP working. Try doing the following to get it working - Update windows media player to 10 or higher, install the mtppk12 = MTP porting kit and install the Microsoft user mode drivers for MTP. These should get you going.
That's way too much work. Just search for drivers in the N5 threads. I had the same problem, there's a universal driver like the person above said.
