[Q] Long press home button - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long pressing the home button, brings up a shortcut to two apps, one is 'What's new' the other is search.
Is it possible to customise this? I've tried googling but my 'Settings' menu's seem different to a standard 4.4.4 build.
Thanks.

It will be possible when developers achive root and other stuff. Right now for root you need to unlock bootloader which i dont advise because of this

I don't understand why the menu option for 'Buttons' is missing from 'Settings'? Why would they do this?
Anyway, thanks for the heads up,
Cheers

You can 'sort of' customise it without root. Some apps like Tasker and Secure Settings can take over from Google Now. After installing one of those swiping to that will let you select which app to use.
Not as good as being able to set up multiple options but it's something.
Incidentally, it's also possible to disable What's New without root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53916026&postcount=20

Very easy, go to settings, choose Apps, and go to the app that is set to be launched by long pressing on the home button. Click on the appropriate app and scroll down to Launch by Default and Clear Defaults.
You can now set a new app to be launched from the home screen.
The above applies on Android 5.0 and up.

[Q] Can't add apps to home screen

Adding apps to the home screen should be simple:
"To add app shortcuts to the Gear's home screen, go to Apps on the Gear, tap and hold an app icon, then drag and drop it on the home icon at the top of the screen."
This doesn't work for me. I tap and hold and nothing happens. I've had no problem removing apps from the home screen through settings > edit home screen. But I cannot add.
Any suggestions?
Anyone else have this issue?

When you do a long press, nothing happens? The app should "pop up" and move with your finger just like when you drag and drop on your phone. Then drop it onto the home button at the top that appears, and you can then rearrange all the apps on the home screens.

If its the same for home pages where you can't rearrange stuff, try wiping the device? If that doesn't work, you might have a defective digitizer touchscreen.

Yes its the same. I can go into settings > display > edit home page and I can long press to move and remove icons there. So I would assume that means the touchscreen itself is fine. But I cannot add through those settings.
Wiping the device is my next move after asking on here (but I'm holding off on that for now). And after that I'll be calling the Samsung shop where I bought it.

OK so I wiped it, without restoring. Noticed straight away that below the "edit home page" option in settings, I now have a "manage apps" option which lets me do what I need. Where was it before? Who knows!
According to the help FAQs I should still be able to move icons/apps without going into settings. I still can't do that. Is it correct that I should be able to?

I don't have the same issue you do. But I also don't have "manage apps" under the "edit home page". Are you seeing this under "display" in your settings on the watch itself? Someone else has the option in GM to send an emergency message like the pebble. They are running the same sowtware number of GM that I am yet that option is not on mine. I don't understand how so many of the same watches with the same software can be so different.

It seems the emergency assistance option has to do with what phone/rom you are running. The option is not there on stock T-mobile Note 3, but if you put the international rom on it, it does.

[Q] is there a way to decrease capacitive buttons delay?

I was wondering if anyone is aware of a way to decrease capacitive buttons delay on the opo? Having to wait so long to bring up recent app list or go to Google Now is simply not acceptable for me after coming from N5 where it was instant. I know I can use on screen buttons but I would like to stick using the capacitive ones but with decreased delay. I am running ART so xposed is not an option. I would also like to stay with stock luncher if possible. Please let me know guys, any help will be much appreciated! (BTW, I searched the forums and Google and found nothing, if it is somewhere out there I apologise in advance!)
What shortcut do you use to bring those things up? Long press? Have your tried double tap instead? I use double tap home for recent apps and it's delay isn't as much as long press home for recent apps

Home offscreen button during typing

Is anybody else having this issue? I am coming from Galaxy S4, where the home button is actual physical button, so there I didn't have any issues, but with OPO, when typing, many times when I try to hit spacebar, it hits the top of the Home button. Before it comes up, I do not want to use on screen buttons, I like the size of the screen and don't want it up with software buttons.
I was wondering if anyone has/could write a script to set the buttons to
(Menu)
Short press - Menu
Long Press - Recent Aps
(Home)
Short press - Nothing
Long Press - Home
(Back)
Short Press - back
Long Press - nothing
Or of there is an app that would give me a bit more control over the buttons... or something that can help with this. This is absolutely the only issue I have with the OPO otherwise I love the phone.

Because i currently am running CM12 i can't give exact insturctions but it should be somewhere in settings -> buttons -> ? over there you should be able to give the buttons other values. It is something like menu button: recent apps switcher and if you press that you can change it to a few other things. If this doesn't fill your needs, ask a bit more around I know it is there, because i saw it once.

Yes it is there, but the option for "Home Short Press" is not there, that is hard coded. At least on the ROM I run (LiquidSmooth)
What I need to know is this:
Which key mapping is for Short Press Home, Long Press Home and Long Press Menu. I am within /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl to adjust the mapping manually, but can't seem to find the correct mapping for those 3.
*EDIT*
Ok, so found the key for Home and that is 172, but that disables both the short and long press...

Yeah, sadly, someone suggested to come here
If you have root try it with the Xposed Module "Xposed Additions".

Unfortunately can't install Xposed as it tells me that my device does not support it. Is there one specifically built for us?
I get this error :
Xposed is not (yet) compatible with Android SDK Version 21 or your processor architecture (armeabi-7va).
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE: could not load library "libdvm.so" needed by "/data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/cache/app_process"; caused by library "libdvm.so" not found.

Thank you for the link, unfortunately still doesn't work. Same error. I think it is because the ROM I am using is LP and LP uses ART instead of Dalvik and XPosed doesn't work with that. Thank you though for the effort

Yes, ART is the problem.
So I came up with a solution for this issue.
The file in question to be working with is /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
Navigate to this file using a File Browser (Root Explorer is the one I use) that has access to Root and make sure you have R/W rights.
Edit the file above in a text editor > find line : "key 139 MENU" and change it to "key 139 HOME" > and then find line : "key 172 HOME" and change it to "key 172 MENU" > Reboot device for it to take effect after you save
Then, within Settings > Buttons, you can adjust (at least on the ROM I am on), the long and short press of the Menu button.
What comes out is: left button is HOME button, with short/long press actions, middle button is MENU with just long action (set short action to NONE), and right button is BACK button untouched.
This way if I am typing, and want to hit space bar, accidentally hitting the middle button will not bring me to the main screen. It will take a while to get used to it, but it does resolve my issue.

Is there a No-Root Solution to bringing the Menu Button Back?

I am migrating from a pre-"recent apps" button phone, and I absolutely hate the recent apps button.
I constantly press it by accident, and since my finger was trying to do something close to where that dumb button is I also constantly accidentally click "close all".
I put my most used apps on my home screen, I don't need to ever see my most recent apps.
What I do like, is being able to open the menu whenever I want to, with a simple button press. I use some old apps that aren't cluttered with "more" or "..." buttons, so getting the menu to come up is a huge pain (holding the back button for eternity).
I'd rather have a much less useful function mapped to long-press than the actually useful function I tend to use frequently (quickly accessing the menu for a save-state with emulators...)
None of the solutions I've seen allow you to do anything with the menu button without root.
There is a thread in the S6 forum talking about modifying your generic file, but that appears to require root and I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the S7.
There are threads that suggest "Buttons Remapper (no root)" allows you to do this, but having installed this I can verify that anything involving the "Menu" function *does* require root for this app.
Are there any true no-root options to substituting the recent-apps button with the menu button?

I wish this was the case. You can not set "Menu" as the action for the keys unless your phone is rooted.

Change function of navigation keys (especailly long press home key)

Hi. I have the Chinese variant (AL00). In general I'm quite happy with it. One thing that I would like to change is the function of long press of the home navigation key. Currently, long press (with a swipe up) of the home key brings up HiVoice which as far as I can tell only works in Chinese. Is there a way to change the function of long press to start up another app without having root? I'm not interested in rooting at this point (at least until Xposed is up and running for Nougat). Also, I currently do not want to convert to international version as having Chinese version may have some, albeit small, advantages. Thanks!
Not sure if you have it on Chinese firmware but you can change it to google app, under application settings, click the settings and choose default app link.
Hi. thanks for the suggestion. I tried but it didn't work. Still get HiVoice. Hopefully it is not baked in...
One more note. OK google works fine in itself. Just don't want the current functionality given to long press home.
Have a look at Nova Launcher. I haven't tried what you want but it does have lots of options.

Thanks. I haven't used Nova Launcher for several years. Currently using Total Launcher. I'll take a look.
I tried Nova Launcher and it does allow me to reset my home button, but, I did not see an option to reset long press of the home button. Anybody know if and where there is such option on Nova?
