[Q] storage and roms - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys. i'm considering changing my Oppo Find 7 for O+
However, being a flashaholic, i wonder: i'm aware that none of the roms require a format of the internal storage..
However,if i wanted to format the storage and then flash a new rom, where would that rom be left or how could i flash it to the device?
Right now i'm running Linux Mint 17 on my laptop

There's absolutely no need to format your internal storage when flashing a ROM. If you did device to do that it's impossible for the ROM to be 'left' anywhere, because that's what formatting does, it removes all data.

Yes,i understand that. But my question is,how to flash a rom through ubuntu? Is there any fastboot access through ubuntu? I suppose so,since it's a big community out there with the O+.If so,where can i find information with that? I like to read before i do anything.

You don't flash a ROM with fastboot, you flash a ROM via your custom recovery. That's how it's done. Of course you can use fastboot on Ubuntu because it's Linux and adb/fastboot is a native feature of Linux. Surely googling 'how to use fastboot on Linux' would give you a plethora of results, or have you not done that?

What Is Android and Custom Recovery Image..?

ClockworkMod – also known as Clockwork and CWM – is a custom recovery for Android phones and tablets that allows you to perform several advanced recovery, restoration, installation and maintenance operations on your Android device that aren’t possible with the stock recovery. In what follows, we will cover all that this recovery is capable of doing, and how to do it.
About Android Recovery
All Android devices ship with a recovery console that is basically a partition on the device’s internal memory and can be booted into. The stock recovery of almost all Android devices provides a few basic yet handy options that allow you to factory reset your device and also to recover its operating system using an official ROM in zip format, but that’s all you can do with it. That’s where a custom recovery comes handy.
A custom Android recovery basically replaces the stock recovery with one that lets you do all you can do with the stock recovery, plus a plethora of more options to give you a lot more control on your device. With a custom recovery, you can install official and unofficial ROMs as well as other updates including apps, themes, kernels etc. using zip files, wipe not just user data but pretty much every partition on your device, mount the storage card for USB mass storage access without leaving recovery, partition your SD card, wipe Dalvik cache and battery stats, fix permissions, perform, manage and restore backups and so on...

I'm a little confused, I'm a noob. So if I root a phone and delete bloatware, can I make a custom recovery so the phone doesn't brick and the factory reset resets all settings to a certain way I want it to? Or is my perception of a custom recovery totally off?
factory reset cannot work according to you
it will remove all the data you have in your /data partition
@op
you should delete the [Q] tag from the title
@s.d.oconnor
good to see you as the mod here, wanna post something related to rc let me know
I have removed the [Q] from your thread title, to avoid mistakes.

replacing the recovery.img file with the custom recovery.img file just by simply coping/overwritting , Will this be same as installing the custom ROM?
Custom recovery partition program killed 32 GB sd card
Is it possible that this partition programmer from clockwork recovery can't work with the new big 32 gb cards?
I wanted to let the custom recovery make an ext2 partition, and a fat 32 partition on a brandnew 32 GB sd card.
Seems that the custom recovery partition program wiped my master boot record from the sd card, I tried everything, the card is recognised,
but it is impossible to write anyting on it. I tried to repair the mbr, but so far it didn't work. I tried with windows fdisk but no solution found.
Someone knows how to save my sd card without sending back to factory?

[Q] NVflash back to stock (Get rid of encryption?)

Hey all,
I've got a SL101 with a sku of c10. I know that for most things the slider is pretty similar to the TF101. I've tried
out a few of the posts around here involving flashing a stock rom via nvflash to get rid of this annoying encryption.
Yes, I know, it's terrible, but the job I was at required it regardless. Problem I'm having is that non of the tools/advice
I've been able to find have had any useful results. I searched around for a working method for the slider, but I wasn't
able to find much. The slider goes into apx mode fine, pc knows its there (using the naked drivers posted here on xda),
but any time I try to send a command via nvflash it disconnects the slider and fails out with the 0x4 code. Maybe I'm
just missing it here on the forums, but does anyone have any clear information on how to go about this for the slider?
Appreciate any help.
IIRC NVFlash does not work for the Slider.
A factory reset should get rid of the encryption.
CWM cannot mount /data to do a wipe, if I pass up recovery and attempt to do the wipe with the factory wipe it also fails, which is why
I was hoping for an nvflash method. Does the stock recovery have the ability to access /data while it is encrypted? Thanks for the quick
reply also.

Try a different recovery. Some peoples who have the can't mount sd card problems use a different recovery and it's fine. You can use PERI tool to install a new recovery and see what happen.
I've tried rogue and twrp, rogue couldnt mount /data either, and twrp wasn't functional at all on the slider... any suggestions for a custom recovery?
I had the same issue, of absolutely nothing being able to mount or read /data. I could use easyflasher (nvflash) to force a repartition and flash of stock asus ics, but it wouldn't be able to boot it. Turned out it's bad blocks on the internal EMMC, and the flash translation layer on these devices is too ****ty to properly map them out and report them to the system. So now my tablet is a giant, useless paperweight.
I've asked people for help as to how to flash a rom to an external sd card, and boot from that, but nobody has helped me. If I find anything out I'll be sure to PM you.
Good luck!
Sounds like you have even more of a problem than I do, I still have a working/functional OS. Its just
that none of these recoveries seem to be able to read the encryption. I'm perfectly able to use it
otherwise.
I hope so for your sake!
If it truly is just encryption, this superwipe script should be able to format it and remove encryption. flash it in recovery
Keep in mind it's a superwipe, so you will lose ALL your data, including the rom you have installed etc. You will retain whatever recovery you have flashed
http://goo.gl/YBW9H
If using super wipe, make sure you have a recovery that read external sd card or ADB to push a ROM top internal sd.
Ah, this worked perfectly. Just out of curiosity, is there a source available for superwipe? I would like to see how
it did it, for future reference.

I believed "Superwipe" script is a work of mike1986. See if he has any source in this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245892
open the zip on your computer, then navigate to meta-inf>com>google>android
then open updater-script with a text editor. You'll see how simple it is, it simply formats /data, /cache, and /system
you can do this with any flashable zip

CWM/TRWP can't mount sd-card or data. Perhaps wrong rommanager?

HI
i need your help.
I have an Photon Q 4g LTE and want to update to CyanogenMod.
Via Fastboot and ADB i can upload CWM/TRWP successfully.
But when i start it, it cannot mount data and SD-CARD. External SD is ok.
Even if i use external-sd i cannot flash custom rom. If failed by not mounting several directories.
In another thread for Samsung i found that there are "bad rommanager" which has a virtual recovery on SD, This makes sense in my case, i cannot have access to SD-Card (internal). But i cannot find any hint how to get and flash a new rommanager. Only via app. But i have no stock rom.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance.
You should just flash TWRP or OpenRecovery using fastboot.
There's also some TWRP Manager app, but I can't personally vouch for it. If you do use TWRP, use the version I recommend in the thread (2.7.1.2)

Question question about decryption/encryption and twrp storage

Hi, I am trying but finding it confusing about these things. For me, I just end up following the guides but not really understanding what these ff mean. Can someone explain in an easy way? New to custom roms and I want to learn more.
1. What does it mean if phone is encrypted or decrypted, and how do they affect the ammount of roms we can flash (i want to try flashing more than 1 rom at a time)
2. I heard from some youtube guides, in some devices that when in twrp mode that the storage cannot be accessed via PC (no way to transfer rom files except for OTG/microSD) but others claim they can access the internal storage 'via PC' (so they can move the ROM files into the root folder of the phone's storage)

Question TWRP Doesn't Show Internal Storage

Getting tired of the buggy MIUi 13 so I'm trying to install a custom rom on my phone. But when I'm in TWRP to flash rom, it doesnt show my internal storage and it shows what I suspect are root android folders. Any way to fix this? Thanks!
in Android 12 the data partition in TWRP can not be decryptet, if you search, you will find the infos yourself. You can format the data partition, but all stored data will be lost then...

Thanks for the reply bro! But from what I learned from @borisku that android 12 has strict storage encryption. So what i did was downgrade to an older version of miui that runs android 11, and after that flash the rom i was changing to.

You don't need to have a recovery that can decrypt android 12 internal storage to use adb sideload. Hence, even if you are using MIUI 13 and TWRP, you can just adb sideload the custom rom directly without the need to downgrad to android 11.
