Will A VPN Secure My Phone On My Company's WiFi? - General Topics

I wasn't sure where to post this thread, so I'll try here. I have zero signal in the building I work in. So I connect to my company's secure wifi network. I don't really browse any webpages while at work, but I use hangouts and use the wifi to send and receive messages. I don't want anyone seeing my conversations or any other data on my phone for that matter. I've read that network admins may possibly be able to read messages, emails, browsing history, view gallery etc. I'm new to all this, so I googled and it seems that a VPN might be what I'm looking for. Will this secure my phone and keep all of my information hidden and safe?

it's hard . as long as you connect to the wifi, the network admin has way to get your infomation

Services like Gmail or Hangouts are secure and IT admins will not be able to read your email/chats unless they're pro hackers and are really targeting you. Their firewall will probably have the capability to log browsing history though, but not go through your email/chat/pictures etc. If you use a VPN service on top of it, it becomes extremely hard to track your browsing, and your browsing history will also be private. In the eyes of your IT department you will only be having encrypted network traffic between your computer and the VPN service provider (you should choose a good VPN like Spotflux or Hotspot Shield - they are free and have premium versions with more features also). However, many/most company networks do not allow their users to use a private VPN service.

WinMo 6.1, Messaging and VPN

I have a Windows Mobile device 6.1 Pro.
I have Messaging setup to collect my personal emails from the Internet via my HSDPA connection.
I also have an account for my work email (POP3) which I collect via the company VPN.
This is my problem, and it's something I've lived with for a long time as I don't think it can be changed. Maybe you guys can help.
I open Messaging and switch to my work email account. I have the Network Connection set to use 'Work' Settings, and in the Work settings I have my VPN connection.
If I open Settings, Connections and click and hold on the VPN settings I can connect manually. Now I have a VPN connection and I can send and receive mail.
However, I want to be able to Send/Receive and for this to be automatic, so when I do this, if there's no 3G, it connects first, then the VPN connection is triggered, and the connection is established - however, in the mean time Messaging has gone off to try to find email from my work servers on the Internet, and always fails obviously. If I Send/Receive again, it connects right away as the VPN connection is already established from the first attempt. Email is sent and recieved as you would expect.
My problem is Messaging doesn't wait long enough for the VPN connection to be established, and although it triggers it, it tried to collect email before it's finished connecting, then I have to try again.
Or connect the VPN manually, but this is many clicks and not so User Friendly for staff who aren't so WinMo savvy.
Is there a way to have Messaging wait long enough for all relevant connections to be established before trying to find the mail server??

[Q] Prevent android from connecting..?

Hello,
so I have this question, I will give my G1 to my girlfriend, but she has no data plan paid (she only visits internet on phone when she gets some bonus days for free), and i would like to block the G1 from connecting to internet AND if it is possible connect only with browser, so when she opens browser, boom internet i online, or when she opens the facebook application, boom internet goes on. ETC. Is that possible?? When possible she will use wi-fi ofcourse but im talking about the data-transfer.
Thanks for help

Just turn off or disable any internet APNs -- this will block data connectivity through the cell radio
Can't enable internet only for web browsing though, not sure why you would want to anyway.

Click to collapse
I mean it like it would be on the older phones, not the smartphones, but just like older phones, they have turned on internet/data only when you have started some internet application, like browser, or lik that..

[Q] 3G for specific program while on Wifi without net access

Hello,
I have done a bit of a search about this but havent found an answer.
At work we have a network with wifi which is behind an authenticated proxy which the admins wont allow cell connection to. I have tried with various proxy apps but no luck. I need the wifi network to sync with the email server, which does work, however while on wifi I cant use the internet or receive txts from WhatsApp etc.
Basically I am just wanting to know if there is a way or an app, to enable 3G for a specific application while on Wifi, or to somehow enable both on request.
The dataplan I have at work is very restrictive, only 100 txt a month and 512mb Data a month on 3G. I therefore rely on WhatsApp to stay under this limit, but dont want my email app to sync to the server and download large emails while on 3G, only while on Wifi. And I need WhatsApp to use 3G as it cant get out via Wifi.
If anyone has suggestions or knows of something to get around this, I would really apprecitate it.
I am on a Galaxy S2 with Root.
Thanks
try droidwall- android firewall
Same issue
I have the same issue, only opposite, I use my phone at work to connect to a machine specific wifi router and vnc into the controls to control the machine. While I am on this connection without internet my 4g turns off and I get no data. Is there a way to force the 4g on while i am on a wifi without internet access so i can still access my email, pandora, etc?
I tried droidwall, but all that does is block the specific app from accessing the wifi connection, it still wont use the 4g connection while there is a wifi network connected, whether there is internet or not.
Oh yes, I am on a rooted Skyrocket on SKY ICS RC7.4 Speed (Great ROM BTW).
I'm guessing by the lack of response, nobody knows of a way to do what we are wanting, but I want to try refreshing this the once just to see if maybe the person who has the solution just missed the first time.
I did reflash my rom to SKy ICS 4.2A-8 if that helps. Im willing to use different roms, mods, hacks, whatever it takes to make this work.

[Q] Slow/delayed notifications and refresh when on corporate Wi-Fi

Whenever I'm on my company's Wi-Fi network, many notifications and refreshes (e.g., Gmail updates, SMS) are delayed. They often flood in at the same time more than an hour after the fact (unless I go into each app and manually refresh/sync). Also, it seems like my location is never accurate while on my enterprise Wi-Fi, particularly when I look for weather at my location. None of these issues exist when I'm off of Wi-Fi at work or when I'm on my home Wi-Fi. (BTW, I didn't have these issues when I had my iPhone 5.)
Is this simply an issue with the way the enterprise Wi-FI is set up? Is there anything I can do in my settings to fix this?
My work WiFi ( in England ) makes my phone think it's in Germany. I guess that's where the main server is. Location services might be better with GPS only. SMS shouldn't be delayed through the WiFi though. Maybe it's a problem with your phone?

Yeah it all depends on where your server is routing traffic before it goes on the internet. There could some branch office to main office links setup which sends your traffic there first, that's for the location stuff.
Firewalls could be blocking pings though which is needed for push GMAIL and such. No way to really know unless we know your network setup.
As was mentioned, SMS shouldn't be a difference unless you are talking about Hangouts or other Messinging apps (those use DATA, not the WCDMA Air interface that SMS does).
I think it is some kind of corporate firewall or av scanner. Not sure what to tell you.

How to disable VPN temporarily?

Running a standard Galaxy S22 on Verizon. My employer, a cybersecurity company, forces me to use our company VPN on my phone, and the VPN icon is always in the notification bar up top. When I check in VPN settings, the option to run all the time is not checked, so I'm not sure when I'm actually connected through VPN. So several questions regarding this:
1. Is there a way to know when I'm actually going through the VPN and when I'm not?
2. Is there a way to temporarily disable the VPN? I've tried doing some things with smart devices around the house, and I can't connect directly to the devices unless I disable the VPN (at least, that's the message I've received from my Nest Thermostat and my Ring cameras). The only way I know is to delete the VPN service completely, but then I have to create a ticket with our help desk to have it reinstalled. That's why I'm looking to just disable periodically.
3. Can my employer see EVERYTHING I do on my phone including all browsing history and personal emails and texts?
Thank you
My guess is that an always-on VPN service - introduced with Android 7 - is running due to device settings controller setup what can't get temporarily deactivated.
