I am trying to create a hotspot for a new iPad using my Verizon Droid 2.2.1. The build number is FRG83D. I am a novice, but am exhausted trying to find an answer on internet that exactly matches my situation.
What about...
1. Set up a hotspot. (its in the settings menu)
2. Connect to it with the iPad.
3. ????
4. profit!!!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
Setting up a hotspot is not in the setting menu.
I've been told that the original Droid CANNOT be used as a mobile hotspot due to hardware limitations, but I forgot where I heard that.

I did try wireless tether, but what do you mean by "unlocked"? I have a feeling I'm close, but can't nail down a specific step. Remember I'm trying to connect to an iPad.
you need to root youf droid and download barnacle wifi tether (market) to tether your ipad

I have Verizon Droid 2.2.1 with build number is FRG83D. Can this be rooted?
I have an original Droid, and I use Wireless Tether so that my friend at work can use his iPad.
Yes you do need to root the Droid to do it.

There's a few, try pdanet. Google "june fabrics".

Why don't you use the stock htc app with the fixed APN (wap.cingular....) ?

If you are already rooted you can use a wifi tether app like Wireless Tether, you don't have to mess with PDA net (PDAnet is great if you are not rooted). I tried Barnacle but had trouble getting my Mac to join the adhoc network it creates. Rather than mess with it too much I put on Wireless Tether and it worked Great.

I can second Barnacle WiFi and also use the stock Mobile Hotspot.
If you are rooted you do not need any program for tether.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980591
Use the referenced APN and you will have tethering available......
I second the wireless tether especially if you have your unlimited data still. Its stupid to pay for it twice

If rooted it also works to remove all entitlement apns from the APN database in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Do you think there will ever be a wifi app that does not require rooting. I had to downgrade back to pda.net. It works but I already miss the wifi app I used for years on WM 6.5.
I believe most custom roms allow tethering without adding it to your plan.
I asked about coredroid in another thread, and I got conflicting reports though.
If you are already rooted, just flash a custom ROM. then you don't need an app and you will also have a hotspot. My favorite is Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 but if you want to keep Sense UI, try Android Revolution HD or CoreDroid or some other Sense based ROM. And Congrats on your escape from under Steve Jobs's thumb =D

The APN method someone mentioned allows wifi tethering without root.
yes by changing the APN you can enable wifi tethering without root , ive done it many times on un-rooted phones ,just dont use it to much or it will be noticed and good ole at&t will add the package (not sure about other carriers)
I can't seem to get barnacle or wifitether to work on this phone. Has anyone else been successful in tethering with the infuse?

I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

guys MOBILE AP in settings! that's native wifi teather ap stands for access point. there is an apk you need to delete or freaze to do it without the tethering plan. ill get details from captivate section and report back.
I can now confirm that Android-Wifi-Tether works.
I used Tether for Root Users 2.0.8-pre1 Wireless
I agree with Dani897, this will ultimately be a matter of replacing the AT&T Modded Wifi AP with the google stock version.

in titaniumbackp if you are rooted freeze ir uninstall "tetheringmanager0326.apk" should unlock it. you can also delete it from adb, rootexplorer, other root file managers as long as you mount read write in terminal emulator, or you can use terminal emulator.
i have a linux machine and use sshdroid to ssh into the phone. that's another way to do it if you get a windows application that handles ssh.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

Can confirm PDAnet+ registered over bluetooth
While I could not get Foxfi to work, I was able to get the bluetooth DUN with PDAnet+ to work on a registered copy, this is as of 12:01 am EDT on 8/30/2013. My phone currently reads 4.2.2 for version. I have not tested the USB connection. Wifi Tether appears to be locked down tight. PDANet+ appears to support using the Bluetooth DUN and the wifi on the host computer to form a wifi hotspot anyway, so perhaps that's a work-around for other devices (stupid that it requires a computer to be the intermediary).
yep USB tether works fine. just have to install motorola ADB interface correctly first. but i thought this thread was about wifi tether so didn't mention earlier

Doesn't Verizon have a mandate from the FCC to allow 3rd party apps to enable wifi tethering? It will really suck if it is impossible to enable this.
I also got PDANet USB tethering to work...doesn't help for my iPad, though.
I saw a report that someone had FoxFi working on a Verizon moto x. Odd that it would work on that but not the droids.

That only applies to tiered data plans, not unlimited.

If that were true how are they offering the 6GB EDGE data tier that doesn't allow tethering? The ruling simply prevented them from blocking access to tether apps (eg going out of their way to make sure you couldn't even download the tethering apps to try like Foxfi), it didn't require that they make the phones WORK with the tether apps from my understanding.

So is rooting really the only option still for tethering? All I want is to be able to tether my Droid Maxx to my Nexus 7 in my car and was hoping not to have to go through so much trouble.
It really isn't any trouble to root. Download the app. Install and run it. Let it reboot 3 times, takes about 2-3 minutes. Then download an sqlite editor and change the one value and reboot. Takes less than 5 minutes from beginning to end.

Awesome! Worked like a charm!
No need to buy SQLite Editor
For those who don't want to pay for the SQLite Editor app, you can still gain wifi tethering/hotspot with this free alternative.
1. Download the free apps aShell and aSQLiteManager from Play Store.
2. Launch aShell, check the "Root" box, then hit "File Explorer" button.
3. Browse to /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases, and open up settings.db with aSQLiteManager.
4. Now choose the "settings" table, hit "Data" button.
5. "PgDn" until you see "65. entitlement_check" and change that value from 1 to 0.
You're done! Restart and wifi tethering/hotspot will work now.
I don't have a settings one.
Does anyone know why whenever I try to do the entitlement check that there is no settings part. I have done it before and recently reset my phone and now it isn't there help me please I have to have a hotspot
