I'm sorry about the long post if you want to get straight to my question, skip the first paragraph
I was avoiding this because it is a fairly noob question set (and I've seen a history of new members on XDA being berated for questions that could have been answered by any amount of research and I'm unsure whether my question set will fall into that category), but I just can't do anymore research since most information I'm finding is not in one place and I can't seem to find a full feature list for any of the ROMs and Kernels I research and look into, and on top of that there are SOOO many.... I'm about to pull my hair out of my head and my skull along with it, and every search engine I use is contemplating homicide (google has divorced me and is planning my murder for the life insurance money, and duck-duck-go is biting my heels with its bill) and firefox is planning a suicide bombing taking the 50 or more tabs with it along with my RAM, and I'm not terribly sure any of those actions aren't justified (and also, as you can probably tell, I'm going NUTS!). Just the amount of information and the amount of digging I have to do to find a single answer for the MANY questions I have regarding these ROMs and Kernels is staggering (I remember having similar problems searching to find the right linux distribution for me, but it wasn't this hard and after 2 or more weeks of searching, I didn't find myself not having any substantial answer, nor did it actually take two weeks)
anyways, enough with the crazy intro to the question
My current phone is a Nexus S 4g (sprint) currently running the stock ROM and Kernel, gingerbread 2.3.7 (build GWK74). I have it rooted and I have clockwork mod recovery flashed as well as ROM manager installed. I'm looking for ROM and Kernel recommendations (and combinations, I want to make sure they're compatible) as well as reasons why they might fit my needs
I need a ROM and Kernel that:
1. Won't reduce any of the current features I have on the Stock ROM/Kernel I have (though I don't use NFC so if google wallet isn't applicable, that's not a loss)
2. Will allow more steps in frequencies on my CPU (so CPUtuner won't tell me it can only go between 100Mhz and 1Ghz when I attempt to manually change the frequency, I can get one governor to get me 400mhz, but that only adds one more step to the 2 current steps, and performance and powersave governors don't work with the stock kernel, not that it's a big deal, I prefer conservative and ondemand)
3. will allow voodoo control & voodoo color (or any other feature that might be useful, though BLN isn't a big deal to me)
4. Has better battery life (while in use, use being things similar to internet browsing) than stock ROM/Kernel (so UI flare isn't completely necessary, and underclocking and/or undervolting would be great, as long as it doesn't sacrifice speed)
5. The UI should be less jittery than I'm seeing the stock react half the time (though that might be an effect of the CPU tuner)
6. I would like overclocking (however if that interferes with battery life, then I can live without it as long as it doesn't make the speed worse than stock)
7. this coincides with #1, but I think it should be said anyways: I don't want any connectivity (besides maybe NFC) to be affected adversely, so I want 4g, 3g (given), wifi, tethering, etc...
a few questions I have that I can't seem to clear up:
1. I'm beginning to develop software for android, so I'm wondering if any ROM and/or Kernel will affect ADB or any connection to my PC at all
2. What advantages do CM7.1 nightlies have over the CM7.1 stable, and any disadvantages (because I would prefer stable unless there's something on the nightlies I might want)
3. And any advantages ICS ports might have to anything listed above? and compatible kernels?
well, I have done some research, and the two ROMs I'm currently considering are Oxygen and CM7.1 (stable). I like Oxygen because it's a barebones rom with a few extra features that (from what I've seen thus far) don't interfere with performance or battery life. I like CM7.1 because it seems to be fairly quick and has a good feature set.
now I know that the performance might be more affected by the kernel than the ROM, so the kernels I've been most interested in are Netarchy and Trinity. Netarchy has decent speeds (though I'm unsure of its effect on battery life) and has a great list of features (such as voodoo control). Trinity is fast (depending on which version, I was debating on the overclocked version that doesn't go to the highest clock setting and the undervolted version which stayed at 1ghz but had great powersaving) because of its speed and/or powersaving, but I'm unsure of all of the features it has)
I had read that CM has its own kernel, but I can't find any substantial evidence to it besides a few short forum posts on various forums. I can't find anything on the CM site that backs up those claims (I could have just missed it though)
I was considering MIUI but I had heard that it had some translation problems from chinese into english and I'm not sure if you can get the text to read from left to right (and be alligned that way). Not sure if that has been fixed and if the features on there are necessary and/or make it difficult to use
I'm asking here because I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface on all of the ROMs and Kernels that might be helpful to me (and hope to get info from more knowledgeable people)

my main problem with this is that most of these roms and kernels seem to do the same thing but all have different problems
I've also found that some versions are more buggy then others which has thrown yet another curve ball into my research (not as bad as ICS but bad enough). I should have expected it but it's just one more thing to go digging for
an answer at all would be nice, other than just the views with no post. Even if the next person's answer is "this is stupid" or something of the like
even that would help me believe it or not
Honestly, your answer is the same one everyone else gets. Try them out and see. Most of the kernels out there should work with any of the ROMs, even the stock ROM. Personally, I have had no real issues with any ROM/kernel combo I have tried. I use CM because I am so used to the features they add and I dislike the stock GB theme. I'm using the last nightly cm7 had because there was something they didn't have in the stable but I don't recall what that was. But most any ROM or kernel you get for gB is likely done being developed for. The combination in my signature serves me very well. A lot of people do like oxygen. I just missed cm too much. Most of the kernels should allow for all of the wants you have.
I also ran cm9 with the glados kernel and honestly, it ran perfect for me. My only issue was with a few apps i use not wanting to cooperate.

I understand that (and some threads I looked over had answers like that, so I figured someone might say something along the lines of "try it out") I was mostly looking for input from past users about some ROM or kernel
I just don't want to end up with a broken phone before I leave for a week or two (to a rural area for a couple of days)

EDIT: well I'm going to continue trying to get android SDK working on my linux OS, and I'm going to install and run a few ROMs and Kernels
ROMs I'm going to try: CM7.1 Stable, Oxygen, CM9
Kernels: Netarchy, Trinity, matri1x, and glados (with CM9)
I just bought this device as a toy and a test as a computer tablet. I found it to be slow and buggy. I do notice that in browsing heavy pages like the real facebook page it IS faster than my Galaxy Note 1 but in almost everything else, the Note is faster and snappier. I have disabled lots of apps, resett it, no change. So my question, I guess this one is really worth rooting and installing a good rom Im used to the Cyanogen to my phones, is Cyanogen working good for this tablet?
Im still marveled by the quality of the screen, I dont think I ever have seen such a good screen! If I just now could get it working somewhat near as good as my Note 1 I will be a happy panda

My experience is that it is NOT slow and buggy.
I could compare it with an iPad3 last week and I think they are very close.
You can't compare it with a note because due to the much higher resolution the gpu has to do so much more computing. That is why the nexus7 is faster than the tf700 due to it's smaller screen AND resolution

I'm on stock rom with browser2ram and force2gpu enabled. My table is very fast. Just remember before you flash a new rom, just do factory reset(data wipe 3 times). Also root is good (allow you to install rooted app like Titinium backup, SetcPU etc..), but don't unlock unless absolutely necessary (void your warranty), or you have time or like to play with custom rom.
Ok, sounds like I will root it then and try to tweak it, Im not satisfied with the speed with it sofar. Its seems stable now after I resetted it, before the reset, it crasched 2-10 times a day. My idea was that since the GPU and CPU is older in the Note, The Tegra 3 would be able to handle the FullHD resolution but it doesnt seem to .. I definatly want a ROM without the garbage crap

Yes, all games, videos, pictures, and documents and apps are function normally. There are 3 most popular office apps:
1. Documents to go (this can view google docs also. Paid version only)
2. Kingsoft office
3. Polaris office (currently polaris has a bug with fonts).
My stock browser can view google docs fine. I think stock browser is the best in my opinion (have tried boat, chrome, mozilla etc...)

The Infinity's performance is not CPU bound and is not due to the higher res. It's I/O limited. The CPU is plenty fast enough. As soon as the memory config requires the system to start hitting the /sdcard memory, the system will be subject to random stuttering/pausing because the sdcard memory is the cheapest, slowest, crappiest flash RAM ASUS could find.
This is why stuff like browser2ram is seen as a huge boost for people that do a lot of browsing and it is also why the stuttering varies from user to user/session to session since the RAM situation in the system varies from config to config and moment to moment during use. Some users who's config has a lot of free DRAM and do not frequently use stuff that hits the sdcard partition hard, see almost no performance issues with the tablet.

I guess I'm going to do the downgrade to ICS .30\root\then try the rootkreeper deal back to Belly Jean.
I really don't want to go thru all this, but if I want to keep chipping away trying to find a better Android experience then so be it.

Thanx for the info! That was my biggest thoughts about the Infinity, "is the RAM enough?" and it isnt but then Ill just have to multitask less and try to tweak it. And perhaps dont install multipicture wallpaper.. but thats one of the things that I love about my Note

Hmmm, I've found mine to be quick and virtually bug-free, but then again I didn't buy it as a toy.
A little tweaking and I wouldn't call it slow. Even stock its a solid piece of equipment.
Apply data2sd mod built for CleanROM 2 after installing the ROM. You'll need a fast sd card.
Research the threads. The blob for data2sd for that ROM was just posted today.

I own both the Infinity and the Acer a700 and after the a700 got JB earlier today, I will say that the Infinity lags more than the a700 (and I was very happy with the Infinity). Colour me shocked.
The only time I really ever experience any lag or sluggishness is when browsing. I will be rooting once there is a method discovered for Jelly Bean on the Infinity. I'd really like to give browser2ram a shot. I've heard it does wonders for browsing.

Before i say thing, I will list the important things about my tablet - C7 model, Has been repaired for speaker issues & Jelly bean 4.1.1. I'd say TF700T is a powerful device, It lacks the software for it. I use to notice quiet a bit of lag on ICS but after upgraded to Jelly bean, It's faster than ever! I would even compare it to iPad 3:laugh: I'm running Stock Jelly bean with a bit of removing apps here and there.
I Don't know why everyone is having problems with such a decent device.

I you guys would read the Development section (read the newer threads, please) you would see that CleanROM2.2 has pretty much completely eliminated the lag and i/o issues. It's reason enough to root and unlock. This tablet is a beast when it is allowed to begin to reach its full potential.

Im rooted and installed CleanRom2.2 this morning and it is indeed faster and smoother i will try the tweaking you guys suggested later. It still lagged when i downloaded my spotify playlists while i was downloading youtube movies tho

I think CleanROM 2.2 is the route I'm going to go too...that's if I can figure out how to do it without asking a bunch of dumbs**t questions.

If it was really laggy and something that i can't deal with i would unlock but since it feels flawless, I might stay. I don't give a crap about their warranty but i do care for my device (brick)

It's the total opposite for me. ICS was fast and virtually lag-free. The latest updates to Jellybean my Infinity lags like nobody's business. Very disappointing. Looks like root'n'rom time.

To start this thread off, I will start by saying ying I am not bashing the developers in any type of way, just giving people my perspective and opinion.

Let me start by introducing myself. I'm not new to this forums, ask many questions and do lots of research and from my research here is my conclusion.
People normally say they want a custom, stock feel of an android and that's why they flash rooms. If you want a pure droid feel get a Nexus device simple as that. Why flash a rom that takes away originality from the device? Things like S Voice, Samsung Watchon, multi window mode, WiFi calling and etc are very useful in everyday life. It's also what makes the phone better than an iPhone in opinion, the only advantage I see with roms are slight speed advantages and honestly, it isn't by much. I feel like roms are only better for games but if you're rooted, you can over clock your phone when you're playing games and problem solved.
I didn't go too much into detail, just stated a few reasons. Feel free to drop your opinions though, I'd like to hear why some of you think custom roms are better.
i rooted my s3 for the first time a few weeks ago, and the main reason was because i wanted the new 4.4 and heard that it wasn't going to come out for a LONG time through an official update. i was leaning towards buying the nexus 5 but when i found out i could flash a custom rom i tried it right away. i'm extremely happy with my decision because the new rom has been stable and makes the phone brand new again. like you mentioned, its much snappier without all the extra samsung extras.

Actually, you can. I've overclocked my phone lol.
It's not just for better performance but in custom ROM everything is better, such as battery life, it's the most important thing after performance.
You can also take the full control of the device after root and install a custom ROM. Games also is very important point for huge number of android user, because the stoke (original) android system cannot run games as smooth as custom ROMs.
Another reason is the lag, lag is a big problem in any android environment and up to now there is no solution for that, however, custom ROMs reduce the lag and make a better feeling for the user.

Not in all cases a ROM makes for better performance, and in some cases it actually makes it worse if the ROM is not properly configured. But a ROM can give the device a plain android version without the bloat software from the device manufacturer, thereby increasing performance and stability. In most cases I don't think it increases performance over plain android other then giving access to overclocking and scheduling options
Hello there fellow members,
First of all, the thread's title is for SEO purposes only so if anyone else runs into the same problem with this phone and start Googling for a solution this will come up.
The issue I have is really basic, I went through all the threads but I couldn't find a trivial solution for this. So I flashed my P920 (again) with V30A (it was a nightmare with all the unbricking process and whatnot, lol) everything is fine except one thing. This is when I play music and turn off the screen it starts lagging almost immediately. I am pretty sure it's about the CPU clock speed scaled below to 200Mhz or something, but I can't figure it out how to change this.
I have downloaded Trickster Mod but there are only two options I can set; the min and the max CPU speed. I've tried other apps as well, no luck. There's no option to set the CPU frequency when the screen is off. Sure it's a good way to save battery but really annoying when it comes to playing music.
I'm not sure if it's the ROM, maybe the kernel (i'm that kind of guy who can make these things work but I have really no idea what is really going on with linux based systems)
Here are my system specs;
ICS 4.0.4
OMAP4430/XMM6260
Kernel 3.0.21
P92030a-EUR-XX
I also have TWRP recovery installed and full root access on my phone.
I appreciate if anyone of you can point me to the right direction what to do with this.
(oh, one more thing please; let me ask you a bit off-topic somehow according to this; ever since I upgraded from Froyo, somehow I feel this fantastic phone a bit slow. It's not as responsive with ICS as it used to be with Froyo, I don't know I would say it's something like when you have a fairly old PC with WinXP and it runs pretty well but once you upgrade it to Win7 it's still okay but not that "lightning fast" when it was with XP. So yeah, maybe it's the old hardware - new software case that I'm "feeling" but 2.2 was definitely better (in terms of speed) when these latest operating systems available for P920).

I am sort of new to rooting and have never installed a custom android operating system or ROM yet. I would like to put on something with Android 5.0 if possible, but if none are out yet, which is the best ROM to put on my LG G3, and a tutorial to do it?
I want to use all of the eatures of the phon still as well.
Are there lollipop ROMS out yet for this phone, and if not should I wait for it?

rIGHT now im using Cloudy Rom V1.1 , the first week super fast , now im getting a little lag in keyboard, the battery its better performace than stock, i will try another to compare , i dont like the F**** Lag.

I too am using Cloudy and find that the top half of the phone doesn't heat up as much. There's an eco mode you can turn on as well. Not sure it that's what's going the trick, but I've kept it on because the battery life is great now.
As for the lag, have you tried flashing Pure Performance X? It's made all the ROMs I've tried snappier (including Cloudy).

I'm using Viper for my third day now. The first day the battery drained really fast as google processes was raelly active, but the last two days ive gotten over 4 hours of screen on time easily and it's definitely been an improvement over stock for me. I havent played any games but phone did not get hot watching youtube vids.
I am not familiary with pure performance X, looks interesting though.
