Quick Question - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Finally tried gaining s-off with Firewater last night and got the whelp message so figure sunshine is only option. Just a quick question with respect to getting up to date. Should this be the order I proceed in:
1. Sunshine
2. Take OTA to get current firmware/radios
3. Flash TWRP via adb.
4. Install new ROM
Downloaded the new CleanROM last night but might wait a bit before going with it as daily. Oh, and does the OTA just do an update without a full wipe?

If you're going s-off there's no need to take the OTA...flash TWRP, flash the latest firmware and then flash a new rom and you're good to go. It's best to get in the habit of never taking an OTA.

Thanks. Don't think I've ever taken one other than on my work phone, just wasn't sure when I would be changing Rom to one with new base and firmware. Thought there might be some improvements with new radios and firmware until I switched.

You could flipflop 1 and 2 and let the OTA take care of the firmware for you then run sunshine since it works on 4.4.3

Should I uninstall sunshine after running it and gaining s-off?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using XDA Free mobile app

I've never used sunshine so I couldn't tell you for sure. But I don't think you need it anymore so I don't see the harm in removing it. You don't need it to get root back if you ever lose it, and if you were to lose S-OFF for whatever reason you'd still have to pay $25 regardless of you having it installed or not...so yeah lol

Makes sense. Btw, thought sunshine required root? If Weaksauce doesn't work in 4.4.3 how does sunshine gain root?

Will custom rom works in all countries or they available to all countries. .....unlike official roms

Ok , so plan to run through this tomorrow, just want to triple check I have the steps right(currently on 4.4.2 with Weaksauce)
1. Run Sunshine, obtain s-off
2. Take OTA (I know I could just flash firmware)
3. Flash TWRP via fastboot
4. Reboot into recovery, flash SuperSU
5. Run like this for a few days
6. When ready flash new ROM via TWRP
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

If your phone is on firmware 4.4.2 keep trying firewater and it will work. Dont open su just install it, and after doing the adb reboot open up weaksauce to make sure it shows your rooted I have found that is where the problem getting firewater to work lies.
If your getting root after the adb reboot then it will work on firmware 4.4.2, but if weaksause is not giving root after adb reboot then firewater will fail every time.
I have done many for people using firewater and it always wont work for me until I manually open waeksauce after you do the adb reboot and it reboots the phone.

Thanks. I've tried Firewater a few times w/o much luck. Tried it both w/ SuperSu and Superuser and had same results. Just retried it after opening the Weaksauce app but it did the same.
Do you know if the rest of the steps are correct if I have to use Sunshine?

Whatever you do DO NOT take an OTA. There's no reason for it and it may cause more trouble than it's worth.
Download and run Sunshine. Now you're S-off and bootloader unlocked.
Flash TWRP 2.8.0.1 in fastboot
Then go here, download and flash the 4.4.3 firmware and radios in fastboot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159
Now you are ready to flash any 4.4.3 based custom rom like CleanROM 2.0

[Q] Opinions needed.

So I traded my galaxy s 4g on craigslist about a month ago for a nexus s (t-mobile) which besides the 4g antenna is 100% better in every way possible. I absolutely love the phone. It came previously rooted which I was ok with. It is on 2.3.3. Not sure what method was used to gain root. Now that the backstory is done here is my dilemma:
I constantly get the update message. I guess I wouldn't mind so much if I could just get rid of the message but the problem isn't just that. I also want to be on the latest greatest version of android. So I've read a bunch of walkthroughs and various ways to update to the latest firmware on a custom rom like cm7 and keep the root, or un root and go to stock 2.3.3 and manually update to stock 2.3.4.
I need an opinion on which would be my easiest way (new to android previous iPhone jail breaker) to get to 2.3.4?
You cannot lose root on a nexus s. No matter the update you can always reroot as its a developer phone with an unlocked bootloader.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Do the update
Download su.zip and the right cwm recovery image for your phone
Mount USB storage
Copy su.zip on sdcard and recovery image goes into /tools folder inside your adb/sdk folder on pc
Boot into fastboot, vol up+power
In a cmd prompt do 'fastboot devices' should return a number (this step is just to check if fastboot/adb is working properly)
'fastboot flash recovery recoveryimagename.img'
Choose recovery option on phone
Install su.zip from sdcard
Done
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I forgot to mention that it will not take the update. I tried a bunch of times and it doesn't work, just gets locked up during the process.

i'm pretty sure that's just cause you're on a custom rom. flash a stock rom and the update should work fine

[Q] OTA after root and s-off

My M8 keeps wanting to update OTA. I rooted with weaksauce and got s-off with firewater. Is it safe to do the OTA update? If so will I still have root / s-off after the update? Sorry, I'm new to Android rooting.
I'm a beginner too, don't do what I say
From what I know, it should work if you flash the stock recovery through ADB from this thread:
AIO VZW M8 Developer Resource Thread
And then installing the OTA.
From what I (think) i (might possibly) know: An OTA installs "stuff" through the stock recovery, therefore if you have a custom one it wont work.
As I said, I'm a beginner too. If you do what I said above, there is a decent chance it wont work. That's because I'm guessing.
So if you are bored and have 500 spare M8s laying around, go for it.. Otherwise wait for a more experienced guy to find this thread.
(this post is my way of saying that I'm curious too.)
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
This is a question that has been answered time after time. You will NOT lose S-OFF. You need the stock recovery in order to take it and will need a custom recovery to flash super zip or install weaksauce and superuser.

Sorry, all the posts I found had people who flashed a custom recovery. I didn't flash a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. So if I do the OTA, I need a custom recovery afterwards in order to install weaksauce and superuser? When I first rooted, I just installed weaksauce (not from recovery) and it worked fine.
You can just install weaksauce and superuser

Thanks, I appreciate you help.
The root you get from weaksauce and superuser is just a partial, temporary root. For a full root, you need to flash a custom recovery through fastboot, and then flash a supersu zip through your custom recovery.

Q Return to Locked for OTA

I ran the sunshine unlock and S-OFF so I want to update my device for the OTA Update, what steps would I take to do so?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using XDA Free mobile app
what I did was use flashify to flash the proper stock recovery from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159) then you can take follow the steps on that thread to flash the zip through fastboot and adb
once that's done you can flash TWRP through fastboot and adb and then boot straight into twrp, restore root/flash whatever rom you want.

You don't have to return back to stock and take the OTA for the update. You can just flash the new firmware/radios and be on your merry way.

[Q] Help for Rooting.

Hi all.
Can anyone lend a hand to help me get my phone rooted again? I had originally rooted it when it first turned up, by using the guide on these forums. Since then I (stupidly) did the OTA upgrade not thinking about losing root. I went from 33r to 38r. The first I knew was when Titanium back up wouldn't back up.
My problem is that neither of my computers (desktop - XP) (Laptop - Windows 7) will now see my phone. They will both make a sound when connecting via the USB cable but neither of them show the phone via My Computer. I've un-installed/installed the drivers again and I have tried putting the phone in Fastboot and clicking on Unlock Bootloader, via the Toolbox V3, but the phone will only "reboot" to the home screen. I'm needing a bit of help from someone who knows what they are doing
Thanks in advance for any help... Foz
Once you unlock the bootloader, I don't think you need to unlock it again. If you lose root after an OTA, I think all you need to do is reflash superuser from recovery. And don't touch those toolboxes. They don't help you learn to solve these problems by yourself.

I think your problem may be that when you installed the OTA, you also clobbered any custom recovery that was there. Next time, uncheck the option to install recovery.

no flash twrp or any custom recovery in adb and then you can flash the root zip.
I'm following this guide for rooting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788632 .
I'm assuming that I'm doing things ok to a point, as the CMD prompt is saying adb version is 1.0.32 but when i put the phone in fast boot, and type "fastboot devices" the phone will show up in the cmd prompt. Its when I "fastboot oem unlock" and"fastboot reboot", the phone will reboot as normal. No setting up of the phone. All my apps and settings are still there, indicating to me that something is wrong :/
I'm assuming that my drivers are ok otherwise I wouldn't be seeing the above in the cmd prompts but...
Can someone tell me if my mobile should show up in "my computer" ? it has in the past, but no longer does. and I'm wondering if this could have someing to do with my problems??
Thanks again..Foz
If your rooted, you have already unlocked the boot loader unless you relocked it. Did you? If not don't worry about unlock and flash custom recovery and flash supersu zip

All you need to do is flash SuperSU again. It's normal to lose root during an OTA update.

I'm (wrongly) assuming bootloader needed unlocking again after the ota update because twrp would not install again. I assumed the whole phone needed all 3 processes to gain root again.

The bootloader shouldn't lock again unless you do it yourself. The recovery (unnecessarily because you can uncheck the 'update cm recovery' option in Developer Options to keep your custom recovery) and root (no way around it) are lost during the OTA but the bootloader should remain unlocked. What response do you get when issuing the following command?
Code:
fastboot oem device-info
Please paste the results here.

I unlocked using Sunshine then followed the steps from TWRP 2.8. I installed GooManager_2.1.3.apk
<Install the app and open it. Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes. The file will download and your device will reboot and install the recovery automatically.>
When I open GooManager I get a pop up window that says:
<h1>Not Found</h1><p>The requested URL /message was not found on this server.</p>
When I go to menu and "Install OpenRecoveryScript" I get a message saying it was unable to find a recovery for my device. I found this info under HTC One M8 2014 Verizon page so it has to be for my device.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure I didn't use that sunshine method when I did mine there is a manual method that was free I used back then. I thought you had to install towel root first before you could use sunshine correct? If you installed towelroot and you are rooted you may have to download super user from the market so that way you can run Flashify and run your recovery image. When you run flashify does it ask you to grant root where you can push ok?

Just get a copy of fastboot for the MAC, there are copies floating around the web. Or you can just download the Android SDK, it will have adb and fastboot and they are both free. Then just open a terminal in mac. Browse to where the fastboot file is, copy the TWRP .img file to the same folder, and run ./fastboot flash recovery nameOfRecoveryFile (where nameOfRecoveryFile is the name of the .img TWRP file you downloaded). That will flash the device directly.

To get root after using Sunhine you need to flash SuperSU in recovery. So you have to get the recovery on your phone first and the only way is in fastboot.
Once you have fastboot set up there is no easier and safer way to flash recoveries and it gives you many options for trouble shooting to boot.
Invest some time to get fastboot working on your Mac. You'll thank yourself later if and when you run into some trouble. To have a working fastboot connection to your Android device is absolutely essential if you start flashing custom software IMHO.
GooManager is no longer supported for flashing TWRP and be careful with Flashify, TWRP manager and similar apps. People have managed to flash stuff to the wrong partition using apps like that. And that will not happen in fastboot....
