Pocket unlocking? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
My nexus 5 is keep unlocking itself while it's in my pocket, and doing random things like calling people, opening apps etc.
I set the pattern lock, and it helped, but from time to time I still see that screen is awake when I pick phone from pocket, sometimes it's in emergency call... Is there a "pocket mode" or something that I turned on or what's up with my phone?
Anyone else experiencing similar thing?
I hate pattern lock thing as well, but I saw that as only solution to a problem that I had.

HA..ha.ha.. Happens to me all the time. But in my case it happens only when i get a call while the phone is in the pocket. Not only does the call get rejected or accepted, but it also unlocks the phone, opens a plethora of apps and then goes back to sleep.
Now, the solution
Do you use a case? If yes, is the power button covered by the case? If yes, then you can either change your case or cut the case around the power button.
If you don't use a case, make sure your power button is not messed up! or you might have to replace the button (THE CERAMIC ONE)
Good luck let us know how it goes

Thanks for your quick answer.
I do not use case yet, looking for one these days for sure. The phone is new so I don't think that button should be replaced, it's working just fine from what I can tell. Guess that i'll have to stick with pattern and to see if some nice case can help with this problem as well.
Thank you once again.

Never once has my Nexus 5 done anything in my pocket. I'd say its your pocket's fault, not the Nexus 5

I'm running LiquidSmooth. It has an option that the screen doesn't turn on if something covers the proximity sensor. It's quite useful when your N5 is in your pocket but if it is laying on the table and I try to unlock it I need to watch out a bit
Sorry for my bad English

I had the same problem, fixed it with a little script I made with "tasker"
I could send it to you if you like

Ignore calls when pulling phone out of pocket

I searched but couldn't find anything. Every time I get a phone call and pull my phone out of my pocket, I think I am sliding the slide up and ignoring the call. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

I have this problem too. What I think happens is that the phone can detect my legs through my pocket. My phone is always facing down in my poclet so when I pull it out the upwards motion against my leg rejects the call. I don't like to face my screen on the outside because I'm always bumping into things with my phone in my pocket. Plus it just feels weird the other way.
I determined the exact same thing. I have the exact same reason you do to. I'm hyper nazi with my phone screen.

You could turn your phone so the bottom of the phone is facing your feet so you can pick up the calls when you pull it out of your pocket. LoL
Yeah that's exactly what I have decided is happening. I tried putting it in upside down, but then I have to flip it and plus I forget to put it in that way. I was looking for a setting like "turn screen on when receiveing a call" but I could not find anything close to it. I don't know what to do about it, but it is super annoying.

Is there an app that can change the way the lock screen slides?
but after reading this not sure if you can find something.

There's WidgetLocker in the market. Allows you to change the lock screen. It replaces the stock lock screen. I tried it, but not loving it. Its customizable also.
Heres a video review

you can change it to the AOSP lockscreen but then your alarm clock won't work, so you will have to get a new one from market (granted this is only if your rooted).

HTC One X - Home Screen/Restart Issues

First off, apologies if these have been covered. I tried searching and couldn't find anything the same as what I am getting but it may be that it is buried in another thread.
Couple of issues with the One X
LOCK SCREEN RESTART
Most people will probably know already that holding the power button for long enough on the Lock Screen will restart the phone. To me, this is ridiculous. Having no kind of confirmation screen means that the phone is constantly restarting in my pocket as it presses against my leg.
Is there any way to disable this function?
HOME SCREEN NOT SAVING
I add the bookmarks widget to a home screen. It stays there nicely until my phone is restarted (usually due to the issue above). When the phone comes back on the widget is gone and an app (a different one each time) has been added instead.
Anyone else having this issue or know what may be causing it?
Again, sorry if these have been covered and thanks in advance for your help.
Haven't noticed the widget issue, but I don't use rhe bookmarks widget so maybe its specific to that particular widget.
But there have been a couple of times where I've had my phone in my pocket and pulled it out only to have it be turned off. Not sure why considering holding down the lock button on the lock screen is supposed to restart the phone, not turn it off completely.

The home screen issue appears to have been fixed with the latest update.
The lock screen restart is still driving me mental though so if anyone knows of a way to stop it would be appreciated.

Re: the phone being off - i have the same problem. For me it seems to be a power issue - if i check the battery use stats, it's completely zeroed out. I'm still troubleshooting that issue.

1) get a case that either partially covers the power button or covers it completely but making it harder to press.
2) get a belt pouch
In either cases your phone will only benefit and may last longer
I personally use horizontal belt pouch and have access to the phone in any position I may be in without awkwardly stretching or leaning, well, unless I'm laying on left side...no issues with pressing buttons ever.
Hi all ,ive resurected this thread to see if anyone has found a way to stop the restart button from working when the phone is locked as its becoming a real pain, ive searched but not found anything....
bump, any ideas anyone, surely just software ? ....
I secomd that.
I've had the same problem from the start. The One X is too easy to unlock. I got some relief with Widget Locker by allowing me to disable the notification bar as a method of unlocking but I still get regular restarts when phone in my pocket and press against power button. Restart should be restricted to an unlocked screen...just like my original HTC Desire. Why do some phone features go backwards?

The restart feature is there to force the phone to restart should it become unresponsive. It's a handy feature to have, it's essential, it's not backwards. Buy a case that limits your access to the power button and hey presto, problem solved.

Yeah If the phone froze on the lockscreen and the power button didn't work when the phone was locked there would be absolutely no way to recover it since it doesn't have a removable battery. The only solution is buy a case the makes the button harder to press or don't carry it in your pocket.

Okay got the picture......reluctantly I will need to buy a case..........Can I make a suggestion for future HTC models.....have a reset button in the form of a tiny hole-identical to the SIM eject hole but obvious on another side of the phone so as not to get them mixed up. This will satisfy everyone.
That's a great suggestion, but I highly doubt it will ever be implemented by HTC. They save money on manufacturing by having the power button doing this operation.

Sticky Power Button

Just got my white 32gb and out of the box it has a very sticky power button. Sticks all the way down almost every time I push it so the power menu comes up. Anybody else have something like this happen?

I'm having this happen actually. Did you find a way to pop the back off and fix it, or did you send it back?
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016 If you follow part of this guide then you can see how to carefully remove the back cover and then inspect why the power button is sticking.

Actually after about a week of usage, it worked itself out and was fine. Haven't had a problem since, so I'd say just give it time and see if the problem resolves itself like mine.
Not sure if you've made the choice to unlock/root yet, but if you have, I'd highly suggest installing a kernel w/ sweep or tap to wake features. Additionally, it's (in my opinion, of course) a good habit to utilize a widget or toggle that will turn your screen off w/ a tap as well.
Obviously, if you determine you've got a manufacturer defect w/ the power button, by all means replace it. But the less dependent you are on the hard buttons, the less wear & tear on them. More often than not, these buttons are the first to go the longer you have your phone.

Mine seems to have sorted itself out too. The button doesn't seem to have that satisfying click my Nexus 4 did.
Glad your power button got sorted out. Being a new phone, I would probably send it back, rather than crack it open, but that's me.
On another note... Personally, I haven't touched my power button in a long time. I use "Gravity Screen," which shuts my phone off when I put my N5 in my pocket and turns it on when I pull it out, It also senses the micro-movements of my hands when I'm using it, and prevents the screen from timing out, If I set it down on a table, and it shuts off (due to timeout), I only have to wave my hand over it to turn it back on.
This app literally changed the way I use my phone, which is why I sprung for the $2 (ish) pro version, rather than the free one I linked. I highly recommend checking it out.
I RMA'd my 32GB White because of this as well as a vibration issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5
After 3 RMAs (= 4 different N5s) I stuck with the last phone and fixed the (loose) power button myself because I was fed up with the quality.
It is really no problem opening a phone, especially if you have done it with a PC before.

[Q] Power button not working

Hello all:
Today my power button has become nonresponsive. I've done nothing unusual with my phone but I do remember early in the morning it rather strangely vibrating 3 times while I was browsing something, and it wasn't a phone call nor an incoming text, and I'm wondering if that was a signifier of what was to come. In any event, the phone is functional otherwise, for I can still slide out the keyboard in order to wake the screen. However, I dare not let the battery completely run out, lest I not be able to turn it on anymore, and I can't do a reboot of the phone (or screen shot, for that matter) since the power + volume down button combo doesn't work; it just lowers my volume. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I had that happen once - just pop the back cover off & re-seat it, make sure it aligns properly. See if that fixes it.

good advice.
before closing the back lid, try to push the button with your finger nails.
if you don't feel the click and just feel mushy, then you are screwed. I lost my camera button in that way from day 1 and I thought it's the way it is.
You have to expect a tactile feedback with every buttons.

Question Sound keeps shutting off, went into safe mode

The sound keeps shutting itself off, and when I turn it up, it goes down again before my eyes. It also went into safe mode, which really shocked me. I restarted it and again same thing. I was able to turn safe mode off when it gave me the option for a millisecond. What could this be?
Does it run normally in safe mode?
If so it's likely a 3rd party app you installed.
I don't know about run normally, as I got out of it right away. Never had that happen, and could not understand reason. I wondered about 3rd party apps, but there is nothing new from previous Flip. Has worked normally until last couple of days and have had it about a month.

Any updates could be the cause. Any update or upgrade can change the playing field drastically.
I avoid them and seldom have problems.
A hidden user setting may have been altered.
Malware is another potential cause or a single event upset.
Try clearing the system cache from to boot menu, it will sometimes cure bizarre behaviors.
If you can't track it down, factory reset then carefully reload. Do Not use SmartSwitch!
It seems like a case issue to me (keys may be pressed by case buttons). Are you using a Flip 3 case on your Flip 4? Whatever that may be, I would suggest taking off the case.

Or maybe a failed volume control button.
Loose or failed internal connector/cable.
Using Samsung flip 4 leather case, but it does have a covered volume button. I like the idea of a case cause rather than failed volume control button! Will change case and see

Magnets and Samsung's tend not to mix well, just saying... if the case uses a magnet.
i had the safe mode issue...definitely a case problem as volume kept on changing prior to the problem. took off case, put back on again and all was fine......i noticed that i did not remove the sticky tabs on the inside of the case so maybe it was moving around and catching on the volume button??
I think you're right. I was using a Samsung case and switched to a Samsung leather one which is I think when the problem started. Removed it and went back to the first one and no problems. OEM case, what the heck! I also did not stick it down as I like to switch them around. Never would have made the connection without some input.
