[Q] custom ROM's - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
Guys anyone tried Custom ROM's on XT1033 ??
because most of them i tried gave problems.
i tried CM11 from their official website(it crashes very often), Most of the ROM's doesn't support dual sim(even if ROM supports single sim in Dual sim Phone, then its ok), And few of Rom's will give error msg's after installation gets complete. Eg; android system UI crash)
Which are all Custom ROM's have you guys tried ??
Please share your experience with custom ROM's. (mention your phone MODEL in your comments)
Note:
1)Please don't take this question as personal.
I'm new to custom Rom's. I've been using CM from just 2 weeks.
2)Don't Rank Custom ROM's(or compare). Its against Forum's Rule. Please suggest some good ROM's name

Please post questions in the Q&A section.

[Q] Whats the exact difference between firmware update and flashina a custom ROM?

I have read that Firmware update doesn't required rooting where as the custom ROMs need rooting. So, what's the benefit we get after firmware update? Guide this noob plz............
Custom rom is just that... Its custom firmware. Basically you can make your phone run exactly how you want it based on what rom you have. I know that's vauge but its a vauge question. There is this nifty little thing built into most computers and even some android phones...it's called "the Google" I would recommend asking it what a custom rom is for some more detailed info also look at what kernels are and what a custom recovery is. I know what its like being in this noobish situation, every one does. Enjoy learning how to properly use your Android phone!
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
Firmware update just updates the software that comes stock from your phone
Custom ROM adds more functionality/more features/completely revamped software to the phone.
Firmware update = stock
Custom ROM = custom

[Completed] old rooted device with stock rom

hey guys
so i have this old wt19i which is rooted but i never bothered to install a custom rom,i stopped using it after a while and bought a simple nokia phone as my main phone.the reason was battery life.
now i want to start using it again but i dont know what custom rom i should install.i wont even insert a sim and plan on using it solely as a gba emulator.
since its an old phone i cant find which custom rom is best for maximum battery life.
i got SU access and stock rom.can i just pick a rom and install it?
i would not ask this question but since its an old phone i cannot find what rom is best.all threads are from 2012

[Completed] [Q] Trusting custom ROMS

Hi,
with due regards to all the hard work this forum members have put in creating and maintaining ROMs, one question popped up :
can we trust them?
would it be possible for someone building a custom ROM to place a script on the installation zip that transmits user data or credentials to the ROM maker? Who checks the authenticity of the ROM? Is there a check done before someone is allowed to release their ROM?
asking these, coz most of my banking and financial apps would be installed on android phone flashed with a custom rom.
please guide.
That's a good question. And the simple answer is that if you want to use the rom you'll have to trust them. There is no formal review process. This forum is self policed. However, there are a lot of smart and honest people here and if someone finds something funny going on in the rom it will be reported in the rom thread. That's not good advertising for the rom developer(s). In my years on XDA I've only seen that once, maybe twice.

There is no forum for this particular device. Having said that, the current forum where you have made this thread is indeed the wrong place for said thread. It will be moved to a more appropriate forum.

All variants roms?

Hello everyone,
I have frequented XDA for a long time and have been rooting/unlocking my phones since I've had my first smartphone (s3). Until now, I haven't really had any questions pertaining to installing custom roms and the like.
My question is - can I install m8 roms that say they are for "all variants"? I ask because I'd like to start trying out different roms such as the AICP rom but have no idea if it will work on my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I currently have an unlocked m8 running the GPE Marshmallow H10 rom found in the Android Dev section of this forum.

The way I see it, You better off flashing a ROM which has a thread within this forum. Otherwise it may not work "out of the box" sort to speak.
You actually have to make sure the "All Variants" is meant for the current version you're trying to flash. For instance, new Viper 5.x only works on unlocked/sprint. I think I tried one of the all variants ROMs once and it needed special modifications to work correctly. *shrug*
You could also ask in the AICP thread if there's anything special which needs to be flashed/modified for it to work.
