[Q] Help blocking YouTube app - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I need some help blocking the YouTube app from my router (d-link). My brother is really neglecting his school work. He brings his friends over after school (while I'm at work) and sits on YouTube all day using the Ps3 because I've put a password on my main computer. At night, he's supposed to be learning for exams but he's on YouTube with his phone..
I've blocked the following addresses from the router:
youtube.com
ytimg.com
youtu.be
m.youtube.com
And this works if you visit YouTube from any Web browser but it doesn't seem to affect the YouTube app on Android. Any help? Please?

May be wifi kill can help u .....
And its good see ur care abt ur brother

Great idea! I completely forgot about WiFi kill.. Although, I think WiFi kill will only work if I'm connected to the network right?

Streaming Live TV

Hey guys,
I've been trying to consolidate links for streaming live tv for a while now and I decided to scrap together a simple web page with all the links. These will work "out of the box" on wm6 devices but 4 of them seem to have problems on 2003 and some wm5 devices without some sort of additional player. Let me know what you think.
Feathered Access
i can`t believe nobody else has acknowledged what you have done !! good work fella i will be adding it to my faves. Keep adding to the list
ps i also have this working in tcpmp

Wow, very nice. Thanks for contributing some intelligent content - a refreshing change from all "WOW - Stream YouTube" posts. I've added this to my list of frequently accessed Favorites.
excellent tv site contribution....have definately added to my favs!!!
Good job with that site....I wish I knew more about these streaming tv sites....I would love to be able to see more local news on my device - I wonder how long before all news sites have streaming video for handhelds.
Is there a way to search for more sites?? What should I be searching for besides "internet tv"? I see a few of your sites you are directing us to start with a url of "MMS" is this what I need to be searching for??
well searching for feeds is kinda tough. If you come across an in page windows media player type feed then that will work. Send me the link and I can put it on the site. As for file types to search, you can try .asx or look for links that start with mms://. I try to set aside some time on my Sundays to search out new links on top of that.
Wow, this is nice. Also adding to my favorites. Thanks man!
Hey guys, I have upgraded my server and I'm try to drive up traffic to the site. If you have enjoyed my work and have a digg account then please click the digg it link at the bottom of my site or click here to help spread the word. Thanks for you help and your feedback guys!
hey man love the idea im having trouble though i cant stream any of the sites over my 3g on at and t i can on wifi coudl this be that proxy on at and t? i dono much about it.
No it should work. Try it in another area, it might just be your signal strength.
on nickolodian i got unspecified error on cnn it just buffered at 0 forever on fox just buffered at 0 for awhile and then the server is busy or is not responding try again later same on comedy chanel...
any way im sure its a phone side problem not your site but help would be apreciated what im noticing is the 3g icon is switching to hspda for a second then goes back to 3g so it looks like its not even trying to use data
sorry i forgot to add that i was trying your sugestion to try it in a diffrent area
Great site...I really am glad that I can keep up to date. hopefully son we can localize some channels. Just out of curiousity, how do I make me default video player the tcpmp? And if it really matters. Thanks
Flyguy, You can change the settings in TCPMP to open mms at the very bottom of the file associations but it seems like a lot of people are have problems viewing these feeds in TCPMP. Give it a shot and let me know if you have better luck.
thanks
thanks for putting this together for us. I've added it to my favorites as well.

I'm using AT&T with an 8525 (Hermes). What are your connection settings? Try setting both connections to MEdiaNet and then disable the proxy. If you have the proxy enabled you will not be able to stream TV through that connection. About the only thing the AT&T proxy will pass is HTTP traffic.
I'm also using TCPMP v0.81 as my streaming player. Works fine for me over an Edge connection. A little slow, but tolerable in most cases. Just had to set the file association in the settings.

[Q] Deployed in Afghanistan please help!

I just purchased the gtab after careful deliberation and i have just one woe.... The only way to get internet access here is to connect to the local provider through the wireless routers they have distributed throughout the installation... Thats the easy part... after that you have to connect using a PPPOE vpn.... i do this with my laptop but i want to use my gtab on the net also.. call me greedy... So my question is; is it possible in anyway to connect to their VPN? Or maybe bridge the connection between my lappy and the gtab?
It might be possible thru Bluetooth? That is if your laptop has Bluetooth. Otherwise I think you will need a small wifi router or something and setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).
Bluetooth won't work....
You can use VPN software on your tab but that needs specific settings [ the same from your lap top ] just need to find compatible VPN software for the tab that will work with your network.
Easiest solution is to use your laptop as a wireless router.
depending on your OS [ assuming windows ] there are many guides online on how to set it up.
May be as easy as selecting your network connection and turning on network sharing....
Goodluck homie
EDIT: i don't know what your base's restrictions are but if your "tech" team helped set up your laptop they should help on the tab too.

Make sure you restrict your hot spot on your laptop to the mac address of your tab and see if you can hide your ssid as well. The base techs lock you down to VPN access for their security so they will not like you opening up their network for everyone to access using your vpn connection.

Thats not necessary as the internet we have is not supplied by the base techs.. we get our personal internet from a local civilian contractor called IO Global.... and the thrid country nationals they have working the branch are no where near enough tech savvy to care what im doing... but thank you for your concern...
Thanks for asking this question. I am in Oki, and having a simular connection problem with my gtab, but the solution provided allowed my to correct my problem as well. Stay safe.

Firstly! Thank you to all for your service to our country!!!! As the people in Egypt are finding out FREEDOM is not FREE.
Second... I do not know which ROM you are using; however Clemsyn's KERNEL does support configuring VPN on your tablet. Please go to this thread for more information:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895825
With the above you should be able to configure your tablet and be able to roam around your area without having to go through your laptop.
This should meet the need you have
I hope the above helps and stay low !!!!

You should at least consider doing this anyway, for your own peace of mind: you don't want some random stranger abusing your network connection or potentially accessing your personal data, do you? You wouldn't take chances with your physical security I am sure. Your data security is important too.
Thank you for serving your country, stay safe out there.

+100!
Yes, thank you!
thanks everyone for both your support of my mission and of my gtablet... I will most definitely try out the clemsyn kernel and see what comes of it because then i could roam the entire base.. And as far as hiding the ssid, i really dont think thats warranted as the people in my unit or anyone else in the area are not the type of people that would know how to get around what simple security i have in place.... They arent the type of people that you would encounter on this forum, or any tech forum for that matter.... but thanks for your concern ill keep it monitored and if i dont have the warm and fuzzy i will put more security in place, but at this point its just an inconvenience.....

This may cause some problems. Android some some well documented issues with non-broadcast SSIDs. It may work, it may not. It may work today, but not connect again tomorrow.
You'll need to test different configurations (if you even can hide the SSID) and see what works. But you may NEED to broadcast for the Tab to connect (again).
Also, from a security stand point, hiding the SSID adds nothing, really. Restrict access to the MAC address and you'll be fine. Use WPA2 if at all possible.
And I'll add to the thanks for serving. You are a true American hero.
lol my first thanks lol you welcome man, i agree hiding your ssid does nothing as far as i know connectify does not work unless password protected and the default method is wpa2, even with the usual method of wpa hacking, macc address filtering should cover you so your good and thanks for tour service man
Jbro,
Thanx so much for starting this thread. I've been "there" and am going back to the same place and forgot that they use pppoe there! And I agree, you don't want to deal with the response from them when you tell them what you're doing.
It sucks bad enough standing in the line in the first place.
Have they improved connection speeds? It used to be steady but nothing to write home about. Also, can you a wifi signal base wide now?

Two friendly suggestions and a question:
1) Produce a more "professional" and well-made tutorial video. For example, choose more "neutral" music and you might want to consider using voice narration instead of text.
2) For the "Setup Hotspot" function, if possible you should move to a GUI like in Virtual Router Manager instead of the current command prompt text interface. It looks and feels so 1980s.
3) What is the security encryption method used by this app? Hopefully WPA2
I use this open source app for the same (For windows 7+)
http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/
I occassionally have to stop/start the service but otherwise it works fine.

yeah.That might be reason.
But once you restart the system and and disable/enable the wifi and also the sharing.

There is a tor client for Android too. But be careful mate... twitter and Facebook are not worth the hurt you and your family will suffer if your caught...
Ill grab the tor apk and post it here for you... but please be careful.. have a pincode on your lockscreen at the very least and have a disposal plan if confronted. Ie a small container of acetone or something similar that can be poored into the Sim/memory slots to destroy the evidence if you are in risk of pla or similar looking through your phone... you know also that people, if they know about it, will give you up to help themselves so keep it quiet too... don't forget you can't be part of the solution/revolution if your not here so stay vigilant and always be paranoid ... better the be wrong and look silly 1000 times but you really will be silly if you don't take precautions and you get caught. It only needs to happen once....

If your Internet access is being blocked by your ISP or other parties, you can always set up and use a VPN. I use a VPN service that has servers all across the world to have access to sites like Hulu or use Pandora and OnLive, even though I don't live in the US or the UK.
They also allow most regular internet activities, except P2P, which is only permitted through one of their servers in Slovakia or Slovenia or something (can't really remember, I don't use P2P anyway).

I think the best option is VPN, it is fast, cheap and more important,
really secure and you can get it on the net.

As sohrab1985 mentioned, VPN is also very secure. There are no traces to leave if you encrypt your traffic as well, except on your own tab.
In terms of privacy protection, I recommend Dolphin HD because it can be configured to browse without saving history at all. I have not found any other SGT compatible browsers that are able to do that. In case you ever forget to remove your history...
BTW: No VPN system is full-proof. Use this advice to work around the system, not get yourself in trouble. If you always connect to a server in the US (for VPN), that could lead to suspicion. Use only when necessary or something.

Wifi killer app?

Mods, if this is not the correct forum, please accept my apologies and move to the correct forum. Thank you.
Ive been searching for an app that will kill devices that are connected to my home WiFi. Wifikill doesnt seem to be updated any longer and isnt working on LP, and I cant seem to find an app that is being actively developed. I really dont need a huge suite that redirects pictures, or finds exploits, forges packets, etc. Just a simple scan the network, and boot the device is perfect. Mostly just to kick the kids off when they arent listening. Maybe make them go outside and get some exercise instead of sitting in front of the xBox all day. I get tired of yelling and tearing the cord out of the TV or router lol.
Thank you in advance.
