I'm new to HTC, just got my M8 today actually. I am most likely going to cough up the $25 for sunshine's root & unlock. However, I just have 2 questions.
In the case that I may need to send my phone in for repair…
A)Is it possible to go back to being locked & unrooted, once doing sunshine's method?
And if so,…
B) Will I be forced to pay another $25 to root & unlock again after?
Thanks in advance!!
Yes and yes
Wow, forced to pay twice...that's some BS.

Ya it's a little rough, I think it should be on a per user basis, or maybe allow the app to work for a full year or so.
Still better than not having s-off, at least you'll know if you have to get a new device they'll definitely update the app to stay current with the firmware.

I'm able to gain temp root with weaksauce...just can't update my su binaries just yet. I haven't really had time to look into this all, but here's a screenshot of the way my phone was shipped. Any thoughts?
So does this mean I may not need sunshine?
Software version I'm running is from April 2014...that's as far as I got. Haha

You may be able to use Firewater then which is free.
Check out http://firewater-soff.com/ and see if it works for you. If so, You are golden. This was made by the same guys that made sunshine.
Oh, right on! Thanks for the info + link man! I'll definitely let u know once I try... Much appreciated!!
I still can't believe how much more responsive ART is to dalvik. I just tried it about 10 min ago. Man, screw Samsung and their clogged up TouchWiz bullish¡t! I'm so glad I listened to you all who said to go with the M8. Hands down, my fav.

I think its just a matter of time really. I don't have the ability to do it, and from what I understand OEMs are making it harder and harder to accomplish, but I still have faith it will get done.
Has there been a device that has proven unable to be unlocked yet? I can't think of any.

Some take a look long time for true unlocking, like the HOX. Due for an upgrade, using my nexus 5 off contract ATM. Was debating looking into the g3 but honestly this thread even having to exist reminded me why I stopped getting phones from att after my HOX. looks like an awesome phone though and I wish you guys luck getting a full unlock quickly!

Yeah I kind of feel the same way about my N5. I really has that phone set up the way I wanted it, with awesome performance. I just really hates fighting with the battery life on it tho.
I still enjoy the G3 a lot tho. Its a great phone as well, just not built with the enthusiast in mind I guess.
So... Feelin a little nooby here, but I can't match this build number "VRU1ANCG" with anything I can find. Only able to match the software build number.

It unlockes an s-off your device. As s-off is what you really want on HTC phones.

You do understand that you will have to PAY for the unlock process once you've installed Sunrise, right? The app doesn't just do the job by itself. I paid for it; well worth the price, but I want to make sure that you get that.
Well worth the lil 25 bucks. I agree

Unfortunately, only buying unlockable phones limits the playing field substantially. I'd rather pay for the abilities of developers like jcase and others who figure out a way around the roadblocks. And again, you do realize that you need to pay "per device" for Sunrise to unlock, right? Your Sunrise license from your other handset won't work on the new M8. (Still worthwhile, just a heads up).
Sounds good. I'll gladly pay $25 to unlock my M9 once I have it that is. I'm looking forward to it.

Looking to upgrade from my note 2, in order to keep unlimited data buying off swappa and deciding between M8 and G3. If its not already rooted when I buy it is there a version I need to look for that will allow root?
Are there are any complaints about the phone I should consider when deciding?
thanks for any info

If u get the m8, you better get it now before lollipop drops then may not be able to root.

If you can find one, one running 4.4.3 would be ideal since gaining s-off is almost assured. It's hit or miss with 4.4.4, but that will be fixed eventually. Other than that, I think the M8 is a flawless phone.

I don't think they changed their minds as much as they can't 100% guarantee there tool is gonna work until they can test it against the final update. They don't want people updating under the assumption that there is already a way to s-off it.
HTC one m8 is one of the best phones of 2014. For all the mods and tweaks with a unlockable bootloader and root makes it even that much better.
I know, I know, WHY DID I BUY THE VERIZON PIXEL 2? Well, i actually got it as a gift from my parents, they got the BestBuy 100$ off so they thought it was a good deal. I personally had a Nexus 6P but my battery was completely dying and i bought it from newegg so i cant rma it. I got it today and i love it, but its so weird without the ability to use still like greenify, adblock, titanium backup, etc. So is there a guess of when there will be a bootloader unlock if there will be one?

What do you mean? Why would you not update? You will never get root on that device so either sell it or live with it. Not updating will only make your device less secure. Besides, you'll need to update to the November patch in order to fix the Krack wifi exploit. This is not a silly assumption, this is fact. I'd be more than happy to eat my words at some point but for now the sugar is in the back of the cabinet.
All we need is a bounty thread at this point. You know that's next right? This way everyone complaining about Verizon can go to one place to rant and not all over the boards.

Agreed. But if he got it as a gift then his options might be limited if it was not bought outright. I'd just say live with it, most people aren't rooting any longer anyway. There is no root yet although that might be coming when images are released. Bootloader unlock, however, on the Verizon Pixels is not going to happen anytime soon, if ever. And to the OP, @Etheralrealm you don't need TiB if you're not flashing roms really. Greenify is a waste with this device and Adaway has some VPN alternatives. I'd just enjoy the device and forget about messing with it.
Yeah, it was bought on a payment plan so my options with selling it are kind of limited.

OK I admit I don't rely understand the process of what they are doing but they aren't monkeys pounding on a keyboard and all of a sudden you're bootloader is unlocked from across the world. They have an application or a key or a key generator, secret Samsung access codes, SOMETHING.
And yes I realize it well never happen, pipe dreams.
