Confirmed on Xperia J, vol down sends you to recovery.
To be sure I always press vol up and vol down few times when pink led is lit up. Works always.
So can anyone tell me how I can update my recovery I am already rooted just need to update it . do I need to flash it in fast boot or what

Connect your phone in fastboot and run "fastboot flash recovery <path_to_recovery.img>" Or if you don't want to use your PC you can use ROM manager or flashify from the play store. Flashify is only good if you have the image saved on your phone and is limited to three flashes a day on the trial version.

Get into the bootloader by powering off the phone. Turn on the phone by pressing the down volume button and the power button at the same time. Rename the recovery you're trying to flash to recovery.img. Plug the phone into the computer and open a command prompt where you saved the new recovery image. Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Or you can flash the ROm that you want.
Enter into fastboot mode
open Flashtool
Flash system that you want
Flash userdata and boot that you want
That's it!
LUCK!
PS: If the problem persists, you may flash it all again (except the userdata.img)

Noooooo no no no and no hahaahhahaha
Mate, it's easier than all of the codes in cmd.
Download flashtool from here and you will be a realised person hahahaah No, just kidding! This program is the easiest way to install the frimwares that you want. But, what Android ROM do you want?
Don't hesitate to ask me for anything!
LUCK!

So I read the 18 pages of aospa kitkat
This is what I understood
The Rom package has 3 parts
System. Img
Boot. Img
Userdata.img
I connect my phone in fastboot mode flash system and boot
Then flash userdata via recovery
Or
Put the boot and system in firmware folder and flash via flash mode. Again userdata flash in recovery
Is it correct????

Man, just flash in the following order:
System
Userdata
Boot

Then if you want you might install a kernel, with the recovery that you just have installed
Luck!

But will it still work if the phone is switched off?
Your device should be in fastboot mode.
Switch off device and hold.
Power * vol up button for 30 sec and it will be in fastboot mode.
Now connect it to pc . Start cmd and type command.
Use cmd from same folder where your boot.img exist on pc.
Boot.img can be found on any nandroidbackup you made just copy that in a folder ans get to work

there are 2 way
1 > Boot by press up volume & power baton and set reboot And it's done ........
2 > make a Flash your mobile by pc on service center ............
Going to fastboot by either method is correct.
Either use rockers. Or asc command adb reboot bootloader.
Both are correct

I did that now all it does is load the starting logo and not do anything, I can still go into fast boot mode though. If I use the fast boot update command can I flash a new rom and will it overwrite everything else? Including boot.
First you have to remove boot, recovery , system, data , user data and then flash the mew rom.
Search for that on google
