[Q] custom recovery needed? - Sony Xperia L

Hello all,
I'm new to Xperia L but not to rooting. I rooted my own HTC sensation and I'm planning to do the same to the Xperia to fix a not working camera and insane battery drain. On the HTC, I needed to flash a custom recovery, update bootloader, update radio before I could install a custom ROM.
Do I need to repeat the same procedure with the XPL? Or just unlock bootloader -> flash ROM done (which is what I'm getting from going through these forums)?

the way I see it now is 2 options:
- first root, and make a TA backuo
or
- unlock, flash recovery (CWM from what I've gathered), flash kernel/ROM.
correct?
Can I backup the stock ROM in CWM if I choose to follow the second option?

I like that option.
Problem is I can't get this thing rooted, I tried Doomlord Rootkit and the motochopper root method (untill I found out it won't work on 4.2.2)
I know I could just unlock and flash a custom ROM/kernel, but I really want to backup with TA before unlocking (not my own phone) and for that I need full root first.

There's rooting kit in the general section that works on 4.2.2. Backing up TA partition is always a good idea. I would suggest you to take a full nandroid backup AFTER flashing a custom kernel. There's no need for titanium backup too (I don't understand why the above post mentions that). Now that you have a working recovery and backup, proceed with flashing your rom.
Hope it helps

tnx.
One more thing though...it seems I can't get into the recovery by default. The purple LED light doesn't lit up when I boot my phone and I tried wigling the volume buttons during boot multiple times but it just boots regularly. I was on the verge to flash a recovery with a boot.img, from phantom I believe, but I figured I wouldn't before I figure out how to get into the recovery. Supose the ROM won't boot after flashing a new recovery, there's no way for me to enter CWM

You cannot enter the recovery by keypress on stock. You'll have to do that via ADB or Gravitybox etc.

I see, so the volume button trick is a custom ROM only feature to enter the recovery..? So I gues I would have to flash a custom ROM with recovery included with flashtool. Can someone hoop me up with a ROM like that?
I did some research into this Gravitybox but it sais it requires a working custom recovery, which I lack.

Unlock bootloader, download a JB Custom Kernel (Vengeance is a good one), extract boot.img and flash it in fastboot mode with flashtool.

It's NOT the ROM. Recovery comes with custom KERNEL. If you're on stock kernel then you won't be able to enter recovery by pressing volume down.
Unlock your bootloader, flash a custom kernel and then you will have a recovery and glowing led on boot. In case your phone doesn't boot( that you cautioned) flash stock FTF using flashtool. It will reset your kernel(which means flash stock kernel, which works anyways).
Hope this helps

ok, got it. thanks.
next problem: I got the CWM working and I was about to flash a custom ROM. the AOSP ROM from Taoshan gave me an error so I wanted to flash a different one. I dowloaded and stored a different ROM+gapps on a different SD card to save some time. Now for some reason, CWM memorizes the content of the combination of the 2 SDcards, and it won't update it's content no matter what SDcard I use. I formatted the SD card and stored the ROM+gapps again, but CWM keeps showing me the content of the old status of the SD card. So I can't select any new zips.
quesiton is, can I fix this somehow OR, can I reflash the boot.img to overwrite the current CWM without any issues? I have no working ROM atm since I already to apply a new one.

Yes, you can flash new kernel anytime. I am not sure what's causing this problem. I wonder if there's any refresh or reload option in CWM or any option to reset/clear CWM data. Look for these options and if you don't find, feel free to flash the kernel again.

solved
I was using a JB kernel and trying to flash KK roms. Extracted a kernel from LS 4.4 ROM and flashed it, phone is booted and working fine now.
about the CWM issue, reflashing the same kernel won't solve the it. When I flashed a different kernel, it did do the trick. Seems CWM stores SD partitions in its own memory. I managed to install zips from the SDcard by accesing the external SDcard partition. Haven't seen any refresh or reload options in CWM.
thanks for the help, overall I just had to do some more reading. I'm quite familiar with rooting but I come from a HTC device, which is entirely different imo. (using 4ext recovery there which I personally find a lot more user friendly). Getting accustomed with Sony devices, the rooting and the terminoligy takes some time I guess.

CWM problem on Stock ROM + other problems

I have a question about CWM. I installed it on my stock rom and now it says unable to mount /system. will i be able to flash other custom roms? and if i can how to make a backup of current rom?
p.s. i made a backup of all my apps via Titanium Backup Pro, and if i install it on new rom will it be able to restore those apps there? and does flashing a kernel and rom changes my baseband version?

The cwm doesnt work for stock roms because tj style has clearly mentioned that the recovery wont work custom or stock rom using rfs file systems.....you cant do backup using cwm..you can only backup boot and recovery image...to backup apps use appmonster pro......the apps will be backed up in your sd then after flashing your new rom you can install them from sd....you can flash custom roms...
any other doubts post it here

That happen to me..ill guide you to what i did.. i think you miss out on restartiong phone before flashing cwm..just flash your phone again with original stock.. let it boot and restar..then add the root zip and restar in recovery..update it and let it boot normally.. restar again and flash cwm with odin.. and let it boot..

no, because stock rom has rfs file system, so cwm cant make a backup of stock systems, but after you flash the custom rom you can create a backup of any custom rom that supports ext4 file system... and if you want to make a backup of your installed apps use titanium backup, it worked best for me, and you can use it on any rom...
whatever appmonster can do, titanium can do as well...
why have two apps, when one does the entire job (and even more)??
also, backups made by titanium (apk as well as data) are compressed...so you get a little more space on your card...

From unrooted Gingerbread Arc to Ultimate HD rom

Hello,
I'm new to rooting/modding/roms, and I wanna install the awesome Ultimate HD rom on my locked, unrooted Xperia Arc LT15i:
Gingerbread
Android Version: 2.3.4
Build: 4.0.2
I don't know where to start.
The page of the Ultimate HD rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920207) says:
- For Unlocked Bootloaders: Flash the Recomnend Kernels; Adv. Stock Kernel
- For Locked Bootloaders: Root your phone using this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683957
I don't think I gotta start with this page ^
I wanna unlock the bootloader, that's step 1 I think (via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034087)
But what's the best way to root and make my Arc ready to install the Ultimate HD rom?
I saw some pages like this about rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874801
But I don't know which one is good and which Kernel I gotta use to go from:
Xperia Arc unrooted 2.3.4, 4.0.2
to
rooted, unlocked with the Adv. Stock kernel Ultimate HD rom.
Do I have to install the official ICS update first on my Arc?
first off all you got to unlock the boot loader
follow instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794800
generally when you unlock the boot loader and install a custom rom, it comes with root so rooting is not required.
when your done reply back to me
Thanks for the info. I was going to unlock the bootloader via the link, but I was wondering:
If I unlock the bootloader, will it delete all my SD data/format SD? I really don't want to lose my SD data

sorry but when you unlock the bootloader, the sd card must be wiped not matter how you do it.
You can take out the sd card when you unlock the bootloader, that might work.

I just unlocked my Arc bootloader without the sd card and it worked!
Now I'm wondering what the next step is before I can install the Ultimate rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920207)
Is it possible to go straight from unlocked Gingerbread to an ICS based rom? Can I now just put the rom zip on my sd and install via CWM?
Or do I need to do something with a Kernel or something first?

nope you need a ics based kernel, usually the rom includes the kernel, but not always, I don't have an arc so I can't recommend what kernel you should use. Anyway, it seems that there is kernel included. You will need this flash tool if you don't have it already
http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1359317663000
here are the instructions
click the lightning icon,
plug in you device into fastboot mode
click fastboot mode and okay
click select kernel to flash
choose you img file
and reboot
some points to remember.
flashing will wipe your all your app data but won't touch any pictures or movie files; always make a nandriod backup
remember to wipe data/ factory reset before flashing
wiping cache and davik cache won't hurt either
click thanks if helped

yes you can flash any kernel even if your rom is not compatible with it, you just won't be able to boot up if you have a ics kernel and a gingerbread rom, however you will just need to flash the ics rom to get it working.
oh and remember that many kernels require you to flash modules in order to get things like wifi

nope the cwm (or twrp) is part of the kernel so doing a factory reset will not delete it.
In fact do you the wiping with cwm.

[Q] what happened?

DEVICE : SAMSUNG GALAXY FIT GT S5670
CURRENT ROM : GB 2.3.6 STOCK
I rooted my device a long time ago..but flashed the recovery few days ago only.
So here's what happened?
i flashed "AMON-RA RECOVERY"..then found it to be old.
then tried to flash the "TJ-STYLE RECOVERY" ...BUT SOMEHOW IT DIDN'T WORKED and ODIN was taking very much time.
so aborted and then flashed "PRATYUSH.CREED 'S RECOVERY"... as mentioned in the guide in the forum that this could backup the STOCK ROM.
THEN as mentioned in the guide i took a NANDROID BACKUP of the stock rom ...(didn't knew the backup was successful or not)..
after creating the backup i tried to flash OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 NIGHTLY.ZIP but the process ended very quickly notifying of successfull flashing...
instead when i rebooted after showing the sumsung animation the Device got hungup at a black screen with android written on it at a little right.
then i tried to restore the NANDROID BACKUP...but the recovery showed MD5 ERROR..
I thought may be a unlocked BOOTLOADER is required ..i googled it but couldn't find the procedure...
i then downloaded and flashed a STOCK_GB_2.3.6.tar.md5 rom..
this worked BUT REPLACED THE CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY WITH STOCK RECOVERY
.
.
.
NOW THE QUESTIONS :
1.why wasn't the NANDROID BACKUP successful ?
2.why didn't the OFFICIAL CYNOGEN MOD 7.2.0 worked ?
3.how can i unlock the BOOT LOADER if it is required for the CUSTOM ROMS ?
4.why the CUSTOM CLOCKWORK MOD got replaced by the STOCK RECOVERY on reflashing with stock rom ?

(i will avoid using odin fr each nd every thing ...)

HOW WOULD I DO THAT..?
means the tj-style recovery i have is in TAR format...
should i UNcompress and recompress it in ZIP format... ?
AND WHAT POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES COULD BE FOR THE ODIN ?
1) Nandroid Backup works only for custom roms. For stock roms u can only take a backup but u cant restore (there's a recovery by pratyush.creed which does restore too but i didn't try so can't say)
2)Perhaps u didn't flash properly so it went into bootloop. Use CWM by TJ-style only and next time, wipe data, cache and dalvik cache and format /system just as a precautionary step before flashing custom rom.
3)Samsung Phones doesn't have locked bootloaders. So to flash a rom, u can do it easily
4) The stock rom u flash via ODIN contains stock recovery as well.
U cant flash recovery unless u have other custom recovery (well there is a flashable zip for CWM by tjstyle but i dont know whether it can be flashed via stock recovery). The only way u can do is through ODIN. Make sure ODIN is set properly and if u have windows 7, run it as administrator and better reinstall drivers.

[Q] Rom question regarding Lollipop.

Hello guys,
I'm still relatively new to rooting stuff on the Nexus 5 (and 7). Running a rooted stock android 4.4.4. with Franco kernal, but with Lollipop now available.. Of course I want to upgrade. I am looking for a stock android 5 rom with prepoot. Is there a prerooted rom available? And do I have to flash stock kernal first before flashing the rom?
Thanks in advance!

Not exactly no. L root is different from KitKat. You have to flash a permissive boot.img (kernel) before flashing SuperSU in recovery.
There are flashable zips. There is one linked in the "guides and info" link in my signatrue (see section 6)... But you still need to flash the chainfire or @sykopompos Permissive boot.img

Thank you for the quick reply. The rom over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...-android-4-4-3-ktu84m-rooted-busybox-t2557523 may suit my needs indeed. Although he's saying "-Don't install SuperSU (won't work, must use CF-Auto-Root)"
So, in my situation.. what I should do would be:
Factory reset
Flash rom with TWRP (my recovery)
Flash radio
Use the latest CF-Auto Root (for Lollipop)
Do I keep my Franco kernal?

I wouldn't use CF autoroot myself. Its similar to a toolkit which we don't recommend.
All you do is flash ROM.zip
Flash Permissive boot.img (kernel)
Flash SuperSU (It will work in this case)
I'll see if I can find a link to @sykopompos boot image
No, I don't believe franco will work. I would recommend trying ElementalX though. You flash it after the permissive boot.img. You jeep the permnissive stuff as ElementalX doesn't replace RAMdisk (just modifies it) so you get best of both worlds.
Plus ElementalX is a great kernel. You'll also be running teh same setup as me then

Thanks allot for the explanation! Alright, to do:
Put rom on internal memory
Boot into TWRP recovery
Whipe everything, cache, system etc.
Flash the rom
Flash the radio
Flash permissive boot.img
Flash Elemental X kernal
Flash SuperSU
Then reboot
Is that the correct way?

Yep, hold on on that, let me source the link.

Search the OP of this thread for "modified kernel"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/rom-n5-l-developer-preview-t2796003
Sorry for bothering.. I think I've got everything setup up.
I've downloaded the files:
bigxie_hammerhead_LRX21O-signed.zip (rom)
LGD820_LRX21O_RADIO.zip (radio)
N5_+LPX13D_ModifiedKernel (modified kernal)
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.01 (SuperSU)
ElementalX-N5-2.03 (ElementalX)
Is it correct to flash it in this order? Did I get all the steps? The files I have downloaded are partially for L developer (such as SuperSU) preview.. does that matter? I also see reports of sd card not showing up.. any problems ahead?

Guys, I got myself in some real trouble I think.
First of all:
I came from 4.4.4. stock rooted with Franco kernal
I did make a backup in TWRP, files are on my pc.
Process:
First of all, I did a factory reset in TWRP
I flashed the rom, radio, kernal for root and supersu.
First boot went fine, although WiFi couldn't be found.
I decided to boot into recovery again to wipe my SD Card
Upon rebooting, phone is looking all black without a real 'launcher', sd card not found etc.
Than:
I managed to push rom, radio, kernal and supersu to /sdcard by adb in rocovery mode
I reflashed all of these, but the same problems occur
What should I do now? I'm ****ting my pants..

Exactly same problem here, using the same rom. I only flashed the rom. All was fine in the first boot. The problem appeared after I formatted the sd card recovery TWRP version 2.8.0.1.. I tried also to reflash the rom with a full wipe from recovery, but nothing .. black background, no navigation bar, no sdcard and no sim is found.
Try updating TWRP to 2.8.1.0. Wipe system/data/cache/dalvik under advanced and then flash the ROM.
Sorry, only way I know how to flash a recovery is with fastboot, no zips...
Or fastboot flash the factory image but do each img separately as I hear there are still issues using the flash.all script when it comes to the system image.

Will this fix the sd card as well?
Are people having the same problem with clockworks recovery mod?

I fixed it! Please check this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56743199&postcount=10 and follow the instructions.. you may have to flash the seperate .img files though, like I had to.

Z3 d6603 rooting,unlocking bootloader, backing up drm,restoring drm,dowgrade/upgrade

I am completely confused!. Can someone PLEASE help me????
I have a Z3 D6603 on 6.0.1
I want to use a custom rom, or root it just to use some extra features.
I gather i need to (in this order):
DOWNGRADE to another android OS
DOWNGRADE firmware
ROOT using whatever method available
BACKUP DRM KEYS
UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
UPGRADE ROM
RESTORE DRM
There doesn't seem to be a ALL IN ONE guide to do everything in one single thread. Instead i have endless windows open, go here do that, go elsewhere to this..etc...etc..etc. Most guides say i need to use specific firmware, but no mention on how to implement this. It seems you need 7 or 8 guides/windows open and for me thats way too confusing for me.
If someone has a spare time and can help me remotely via teamviewer, i would be grateful. Or a link to a all in one guide if it exists?

First of all you have to decide whether you want to install custom rom or just root the stock one.
There is no need to unlock bootloader in the second case.

Good point thanks for that, i think a stock rom will be ok. I just want to be able to:
1. Use xposed
2.Be able to free up my FULL internal memory by allowing transfer of apps to the sd card (that wont usually allow that).
But if there's other benefits with custom roms, such as extended battery life. Then i would definitely think about that.
So far i have made progress....
1. Downgraded to 4.4.4
2. Rooted.
So i am left to backup DRM keys (just because)
Then flash a rom.
Any pointers to pre rooted stock roms for D6603 for the EU./UK market?
Nice... I see you are on the right way already.
About the rom. I dont know. Perhaps DE will go fine. But maybe it might be useful to check the newest rom for your exact region with xperifirm at first.
I have soft bricked my phone.
So i installed TWRP recovery, and booted into recovery. I deleted DATA, CACHE, DALVIC, SYSTEM.
Then i went to install my pre rooted rom, but it was not picking it up. So i removed SD card and put into my PC and then copied this zip file onto it again. PLugged back into Z3 and again phone is not picking it up. So i tried to reboot phone to get back into recovery and it is stuck on the SONY splash screen.
.EDIT:
Got it back up and running again using the old firmware 4.4.4 and also rooted it again.
right, now when i go to install a pre-rooted stock 6.0.1 rom. Do i need to delete CACHE, SYSTEM, DALVIC, DATA or not???? this part is confusing and not mentioned anywhere that i can see.
Right, after messing with this the whole entire day. I am stuck again. So this is what i did.
1- DOWNGRADE to 4.4.4
2- ROOT Z3 USING ONE CLICK ROOT SOLUTION
3- INSTALL [NUT] RECOVERY
4 -ERASE DALVIC, CACHE, SYSTEM, DATA
5- INSTALL PRE ROOTED 6.0.1 ROM
ALL OK.
But that is where i am stuck. The main reason i want a rooted phone is to use xposed. So now i need to boot into recovery to install it.
Recovery is missing?!?!?! ok. So i try to install it again from the instal.bat (NUT) i downloaded earlier. Now phone is in a reboot loop on the sony splash screen. I have done the above process 4 times now, i can confirm the [NUT] RECOVERY does NOT work on marshmallow. Which i am sure has been confirmed many times on here. Is there any other recovery that works on Z3 running marshmallow?

Back to KK you go.
- Root and install dual recovery
- Enter recovery
- Backup "Trim Area" (This is your TA backup - make sure you enable md5sum check)
- Do all the wipes
- Flash prerooted mm (it should have recovery built-in)
- To enter recovery, reboot and press volume down when the led comes on (It's the only way, reboot recovery apps don't work)

Thanks shoey, the TA backup you mentioned, do i need this if my bootloader is locked due to using stock roms?.
I think the route i am taking is stock roms.
The pre-rooted stock 6.0.1 UK rom i used doesn't seem to have recovery built in.
Maybe i should wait for [NUT] to release recovery version which works on MM? or is there any other recovery that works with locked bootloader?.

You can't have enough TA backups. Even if you only flash stock based roms[emoji14]
Gives peace of mind in case of corrupted partition or whatever.
So your prerooted mm ROM has no recovery? Or you want one specific to your region? You can make one for yourself. Search for PRF Creator and recroot 4.
