Hello all.
I have looked around via the search tool but not found what I was looking for directly.
Background:
I have a sterling kit car. I am modernizing the entire car to look, act, and drive like a modern day exotic sports car. So of course I would want an in dash infotainment system. However this car is extremely small. In fact the roof is only 40 inches tall.
So after remodeling the dash I have room for a 5 inch tablet. I would like to use an android based tablet, but most of the units I can find are chinese, and Win CE 6.0 based.
Im looking for the following features:
Google maps 3D GPS/Navigation
Bluetooth for phone, camera and OBD2 system access
WIFI
Back up camera wireless
Driving rear view camera
OBD 2 bluetooth system access
FM radio
MP3 Play back
Parking radar system
HD quality touch screen
Auto on and off based on external voltage (accessory power)
Custom boot screen and animations
I know some of these would be add ons and not part of the base android unit. But I am finding it very difficult to find a 5" tablet I can use in this way. It would be mounted in the dash board with only the screen exposed.
Can a win CE based tablet be converted to run android?
Im looking for a believable OEM in dash infotainment system. SI would imagine the processing power should be pretty good for fast switching, and animation speeds.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Yaughn

So I would kill to have a windows mobile based car stereo all around - one that can benefit from regular rom updates and software made avialable for the platform. Example would be, say all the features of say the touch pro/ATT FUZE, with a built in amp and maybe dvd player attached to a 7" touchscreen...
It's not hard to get a screen that matches the resolution of the newer Touch pros at WVGA. The audio can be routed through a small amp - GPS is already built, so is mp3, attach bluetooth keyboard, bluetooth OBDII, FM Radio, etc etc. Not sure how the DVD would be wired in though
The core of my question is, do the touch screens used in cars like this one have the capability to work in this application
http://www.lilliputweb.net/ts629.html
It has a 4 wire resistive touch screen and wvga resolution...
Is it possible to somehow (even if dissassembly and hard wiring were an option) to get the output from the TP main board onto this display. I would imagine the signal strength from the TP is kinda low compared to the output from a computer so that might pose a problem, but i want to believe that at some point the required inputs of this screen for display are similar to those on the TP vga and the output from the TP display for touch screen functionality is similar to the out of the LCD display for touch screen functionality?
What do you guys think.

Check out this site if you haven't already. I have been looking to do this for a LONG time.

Having a touch screen in-dash video screen which could connect to a windows phone, and somehow "tap into" the touch-sensitive controls of the phone would be a dream. I currently use a touch pro and I have a pioneer in-dash dvd/cd player which is a touch screen. I also have the video out cable for the touch pro and use it to watch slingbox in the car as well as use the phones gps. I constantly find myself touching the screen to control the phones functions with no success as the cable only sends the video and audio into the composite input, it’s such a hard habit to break! I’m sure eventually the phone will be fully integrated, I guess until then all we can do is dream.
No way to do it without a carputer. No way to hook a touch screen display directly to the TP.
Even with a carputer, the closest you'll get to touch screen capability is using MyMobiler (or similar) and it will be laggy as hell. You could connect the video/audio from the TP to the monitor, but there's no way to get touch screen working.
If you want to use the phone as stereo, just get 3.5mm -> RCA adapters and hook it into your CD player's AUX input.
Using a TP in the manner the OP stated is way over complicating things. Just get a carputer and be done with it.
re:
Most of the features will work through PAN, so you wouldn't have to touch the phone at all.
The idea I had, was to have wireless in the carputer and just transfer the songs I wanted from my pc to the car. I would have wake on lan enabled, so the pc wasn't running all the time. Plus, there are soft, shutdown modules if the voltage gets too low.
There is a ton of possibilites, and if you are good at programming, microsoft has the sdk available for sync.
Also, I have a lot of internal contacts for stereo equipment, for high-end. Usually 40%-60% off retail.
Imagine getting a better subwoofer than the JL audio W7 for half the price
Just became the owner of a Fiat Punto, with the Blue&Me Infotainment system. Appears that it really is 'Microsoft Car', a flavour of CE.
From what I have seen, it also has an API. Potentially great to deliver apps to your own car, even more so in combination with your WP7 device.
For example: TomTom has already done some nice things with this system. Their Navigation device can communicate via Bluetooth, and display things like trip-information, driver preferences etc. Other way around, Tomtom is able to push screens to the car's info-screen on your dashboard. Nice feature when nearing a roundabout, as it shows you the exact turn to take while the normal Nav-screen shows a 3D perspective.
Start thinking wild, and go beyond the regular 'play my music': What kind of magic would you like to see happening if your car had the Blue&Me Infotainment system and has been tethered to your WP7 which is mounted on your windscreen? How can they synergize into baffling proportions?

Can't understand what you want to express the question.
I'd like to hook up my device, I currently own a mk809III, to my car audio system and use it for GPS. I drive an Audi and the country I live in doesn't have a nav DVD, so I thought a stick android could do the trick.
So I'm looking to replace my current device with a GPS powered one, and use the built in car screen to play around.
Any ideas anyone ?
My Toyota comes with an OEM Pioneer head unit: huge 9" inch capacitive LCD, no physical button, and it runs linux-like OS called iAuto 14CY, with its own app store that only has 21 apps.
What are the chances of loading a custom Android ROM onto it, and use it like a tablet? Despite its smart look, It has zero integration with the car ECU, and no car settings can be set from this unit whatsoever.
I have since replaced it with an android head unit, so I can spare this HU to experiment with.
I'm restoring a classic truck and doing some fabrication for a modern DIY headunit. Should I...
A) Mount a Galaxy Tab S8+, with a big beautiful screen, on my dash and connect to it with my phone via Headunit Reloaded?
-or-
B) Mount a big beautiful AMOLED touchscreen with similar specs on my dash and connect to it directly via HDMI out from the phone?
HR on a tablet seems great but there is some added complexity of HR not being supported in the future or Google bricking it with an update. Also I'd worry about leaving a LiPo in my truck. It would be idle potentially for over a week if I don't drive it, which could drain the tablet's battery, causing it to shut down fully, then requiring long bootup time.
I could get (pretty much) the same screen from aliexpress and mount that to the dash. No battery concerns. I'd just plug in the phone as soon as got in the car and then take the phone with me, running everything directly on the phone - audio out, etc. If I went this route, though, could I configure the resolution of the external monitor? Would driving mode work?
Anyone have experience here? Which approach would you choose? Why?
Thanks!
Maybe something over in the Automotive forum threads...
Android Automotive OS
Android Automotive OS is not Android Auto. This is more than an operating system designed to implement Google features into cars. It goes beyond just adding apps and navigation. Android Automotive OS controls the hardware of the car, like the AC, lights, seat settings etc.
