i have had my nexus 5 for just over a week now and i have seen people mention that the battery life is poor at the beginning and it eventually gets better after few charges but I seem to be getting 2.5hrs max screen on time. I am not a heavy user and i dont play a lot of games, mainly browsing, whatsapp, facebook, hangouts..
I have tried using ART aswell but the battery is still the same.
When i got the phone from UK play store (32gb) it didnt require an update on first boot which is different from what I have seen in review videos. I am not sure if that could be the problem. Do u recommend me to reset the phone to its factory settings and start again?

I'd say most people get better battery over time because they go through settings and disable a few battery draining options. WiFi always scanning, hot word, etc. You can also monitor all your battery statistics to give you a better idea of what is causing drains for you.
Out of the box 2.5-3hrs SoT is normal, 4-5 hours is attainable on stock. I've seen no definitive proof that ART increases battery life in a significant way.

battery life gets better because we get to know the device statistics and tweak it...
see if there are any apps running in background..
Disable Google now if you dont use it..
adjust your gps settings..
and even though wi-fi is not turned on it keeps on scanning if apps request. so disable it in wi-fi menu...

It's really possible to optimize it. My N5 is running for 50h now including 2,5h screen-on time, 1h talking and 8h airplane mode (sleep time).
Check the battery stats... Some Google services consume a lot of energy over the day. Especially the hot-word function. I turned of many things... my phone is only syncing contacts and calendar.
I just got my Z5 a few days ago, and the battery life is downright AWFUL. With stamina mode on, my phone drains about 1% every minute or two, just while browsing the web. What is going on here?

Me too, it's a total letdown. Had 3 hours SOC and around 9-10 hours overall before it conked out on me yesterday

Looks like your device is spending a lot of time switching networks which is battery intensive. Are you in a poor signal area?

Occasionally, but not all the time. The battery drain was still this bad even when I was connected to my WiFi signal at home

Try airplane mode and see if it improves. This will allow you to use WIFI but halt network search and switching. Check battery stats after a while to see if that helps. Of course, you will get no network dependent communications while in airplane mode so take that into consideration prior to testing. Battery performance will settle down after a few weeks as well but you certainly seem to have a major drain problem and testing will help you locate the cause.

Okay, airplane mode hasn't helped much at all. I'm still draining 1% every minute or two.

That is truly strange. Any running apps killing it? I just streamed a two hour movie and lost 22%. I read somewhere that the pre-installed AVG was a battery hog. I couldn't tell you because I uninstalled it as soon as I booted for the first time. Are you still running it? That may be the next test.

Nope, I uninstalled it immediately too.
Only other suggestion is factory reset or repair firmware both if which are a PIA.

Have you looked at your Google account settings to see if everything is syncing properly? I have seen this before when someone had an error while trying to sync photos to their Google account, demolished their battery until they went into account settings and unchecked whatever it was that was syncing constantly.
Also make sure you have opted out of Google's location history thing in Google maps where it tells you everywhere you've been on any given day, that can wipe your battery as well. Lastly try turning off the xperia protection that allows you to remotely deactivate the phone, just make sure you don't lose it in the meantime !
I got a Z5 the day it came out and it has done pretty well on battery life, at least until I installed Facebook and Messenger. When I uninstalled the two of them, the battery life returned to pretty good. With Facebook and Messenger the battery was draining extremely quickly. I unlocked the bootloader the day I got the phone and am waiting for TWRP as root will sort a lot of this out.
After 3 Days, i looks like a normale Day use by me around 50% battery. I have allthetime Bluetooth and Wlan on. Whatsapp and Gmail sync. I use my Phone usually for streamming musik over bluetooth around 2h hours, read news and message (Whatsapp) around 2h hours, play some games around 30minutes and some Calls around the same time. My "old" Z1 i had usually to charge ones during the day and of course during the night. So im happy with the battery time @ z5.

Okay, I just turned off automatic Google photos backup, and Google's location history setting was already off. I also turned off my Xperia (the thing that lets me remotely deactivate the phone). Let's see if it works.
Yeah, its still draining fast. In case you're wondering, I keep my screen at half brightness. You can look at the photo I attached.

Did you ever resolve the issue? I'm getting similar battery life and am not happy about it.
This may be a noob-ish suggestion and one that the phone industry claims isn't necessary anymore, but have you tried "calibrating" the battery by charging it to 100 and completely draining it to the point where the phone won't turn on 2 times and then fully charging it a 3rd time? It may be an old, unnecessary habit, but I've done this every time I get a new battery (or phone) and I usually have really good battery life for the first year - year and a half. The one device I failed to do this on was my Xperia z2 tablet and it suffered for it (i think) although that could just be my prejudice and confirmation bias speaking.
- others suggest NOT to fully drain your phone's battery because you might have troubles turning it on.
Did you by any chance have "Glove Mode" enabled in Settings < Display? It seems that your screen is the culprit. Try disabling "Smart backlight" if you have it enabled and "Tap to wake up".
From the screenshot you posted earlier (History details) we can see that even when the screen is off the wifi is on and the phone isn't actually sleeping. So you got a wakelock on your hands that uses WiFi and doesn't let the phone sleep.
In WiFi settings under advanced (Wifi< Three dots, top right< Advanced) do you have wifi as always on? Change it to "Only when plugged in", also disable "Scanning always available" in the same menu.

my battery life seems to vary, maybe wakelocks? I am not rooted so I can't check. Some days I get 7-8 hours sot, however today (a day at university with wifi connection) my battery life is terrible, mobile network standby and Android system seem to be battery hogs.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I wanted to post the same thing... I haven't even installed all my apps on the new phone,
and I get terrible battery drain especially in standby, it's losing 20% overnight.
Then I factory reset it and it seems a little better now, but it's too unstable...

There have been reports of other users on battery drain with certain themes installed. What theme are running and could you compare with the default theme?
same here, not found the cause yet but tempted to do a full reset and start from scratch.
For wakelocks non root, download wakelock detector lite, you just enable it via a chrome app and usb debug, will have to do it when you restart the phone but thats not so often now days.

In my house the reception is not very good, but that's why I set it to 2G and turn off mobile data, leave it only on Wifi.
Did not install any theme, default everything. But really, can a theme cause battery drain ?

The battery standby stability is not great is it?
I'm currently turning on "battery saver" when I am not using the phone - a slight pain, I know, but it does seem to have helped, a bit.
Will keep an eye on it and let you know (I am hoping to get away with charging the phone every two days rather than every day).
Will see if that proves possible - FWIW, for me, it seems that Ourlook and Bluemail are two key culprits. I have changed the settings on Bluemail from Push to Fetch every 15 mins, which has helped, but of course you cannot do this on Outlook. Well done Microsoft.
At this rate I'll end up using the "extreme" power saving mode
I know battery usage will never be consistent among different users, but the background drain is too much (based on what I see here and the other thread). If you can figure out your background drain you'll be sorted.
I know Dropbox had a bug that affected a lot of people recently, where it would keep the phone awake for hours at a time, they sorted it out in a BETA but not sure if its been pushed to stable yet.
I'd recommend everyone to download BetterBatteryStats, give it permissions via ADB and then use your phone normally until you reach 10% and see what is keeping the phone awake. My phone drains less than 1% an hour overnight (typically lose 4-5% over an 8-9 hour period.)
By the way, it is VERY common amongst the U11 and U11+ for mobile network standby to appear very high. It always does, even when I get 7-8 hours SOT, the mobile drain appears high. I think the battery stats are a bit bugged if I am honest. Sometimes it will say Spotify has been using battery in the background for 10 hours, yet it drains less than 1% and doesn't show up on battery historian. Other times it will say Nova is using 50% battery with 10 minutes screen usage (even though my phone has been running for 30+ hours). Doesn't always make sense.
My experience with battery drain is that I don't have any issues. As others have said, it will be different for different users depending on apps running in the background.
I have over 100 apps installed, some are running in the background, but I usually have 50% left most days. My battery drains really slowly. Couldn't be happier.

This is the problem I have with this HTC U11+ battery: if I don't reboot the phone after charging, kernel is always awakes
If you reboot your phone regularly you won't notice this.
I wonder if it is a common problem to U11+ and if HTC knows this.

Seems more like a software issue.
I would try seeing what apps maybe like to wake up when charged (anything that backs up only when charging etc) or do a factory reset.

I did factory reset, wipe cache, everything... Unfortunately there are many people with this problem since the last software update, so I think it's something HTC related that must be fixed.

I have solved it after I noticed the problem by doing a factory reset.
I have the European U11+ and I'm experiencing very fast battery draining after the latest OTA update too.
With me it's Google Play services causing the problem even in airplane mode and with extreme power saving on

I don't think it's play services' problem… Because the maximum battery consumption is caused by the EPS.
Maybe it's a bug made by HTC. They may change some files after the update, but forget to deal with the case of these files have been generated. So my problem was solved after factory resetting.
I use Google apps too, they don't cause battery draining if everything goes well.
I reached out to HTC as I noticed an absolutely huge decrease in battery life. I was asked to calibrate the battery and that seems to have stopped the issues at the moment. Email I received had the following instructions:
Recalibrate the battery/charging logic with the following steps:
•Charge the device for at least 10 minutes
•With the device truly OFF while still being plugged into the wall outlet, push in and hold volume up and volume down AND power button, for 2 minutes.
•Let go. Device will boot up, and battery/charging logic are re-calibrated.
I tried that and then reset it and I've been getting about a day since then. It's definitely linked to the last software update despite what they'll try and say.

I have to agree that something is happening with the software, and moreover, since last week the drain became really noticeable.
I was losing around 15% by night, so what I did to fix it was the following:
Clear cache of Sense Home
Disable the apps I was not using; for me those were:
Weather
HTC Account
Device configuration
Google Documents (didn't let me uninstall, but Sheets and Presentation let me)
Duo
Zoe Video Editor
Facebook
Facebook App Manager
HTC Alexa
HTC AppCloud
HTC Sense Companion
Instagram
Messenger
News Republic
VR Google Services

I've ended up doing something similar- starting in safe mode I found that I wasn't getting the same drastic battery drain so I removed/disabled some apps, including HTC Weather and Touchpal, same as you. Now battery life seems much better and Google Play Services isn't causing a problem. I'm cautiously optimistic....:good:
I have all the bells and whistles turned off, uninstalled a ton of bloatware via ADB commands, and everything's been fine - great battery life. But then I charged up to 100% last night and when I awoke it was at 80%, then by 12 noon i was at 64% and this was with battery saver turned on. I checked battery usage and nothing was amiss. I don't get it, how is my battery draining so fast when I'm not even using it? There wasn't any firmware update, so I'm at a loss as to what the issue is.
So I reset the phone and set it up again, charged it back to 100%, then lost 4% in 90 minutes without even touching it. I'm guessing it's a hardware/battery problem.
Anyone else having this issue?
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services.
Google backup Transport and Playstore are dependencies of it. Backup Transport can do this. Normally I keep Play Services disabled unless I need it.

Well still had huge battery drain with play services disabled. I factory reset yet again, removed all the bloatware I could, yet a charge to 100% is down to 94% after 2 hours of just sitting on table. I got a lemon. This is a straight talk pre-pay phone, so I'm not sure what to do next.

Disabling Google play Services may not fully stop the Backup Transport drain....
You need to find the apps causing the power drain, this is common on Samsung's.
Disable adaptive battery and the other power management junk*.
Factory resets are generally worthless; you need to find the root causes!!!
Disable only apps that are proven power hogs or are just to terrible to look at like Digital Wellbeing. If you disable a service needed by an app it may constantly keep polling for it. Use discression on what is removed.
Install a logging firewall if you can or otherwise see what apps are using bandwidth. Kill by altering their settings ie no background data/battery.
All cloud apps will likely be hogs. Social media apps shouldn't be on the device. Activate Developer options and use its tools. Use the tools in Device Care.
Turn off all Google, Samsung and carrier feedback. Android 12 may give tracking tools as well, I don't run anything higher than 10.

I have no idea what im looking at with that app. I'm losing 2% battery per hour overnight with it sitting on my nightstand. The only things i see being used is "google play store" , " play services". "netd" & weather. I don't see anything out of the ordinary.
I did a factory reset yesterday, removed all the bloat (disabled or uninstalled) everything not needed that the phone would let me. I used ADB to set RAM + to zero only. This drain started 2 days ago and there's been no updates so I'm at a loss & actually think its a hardware problem. Phone is only 3 weeks old. I contacted Straight talk and they said I have send phone in and they'll send me a used one once they get it. I'm pissed.
I hope you are aware of the risks with uninstalling "bloatware" with ADB. This may result in problems. Return the phone to default (factory reset) to get all back and only remove stuff you can without using ADB.

You can temporarily screw up the OS but nothing that can't be reversed it with a factory data reset, which I did. Anyway, it was fine. Let's just say I may have dropped it from waist height and that's when this battery drain came up. I have it in a UAG case and a glass screen protector (I've dropped my iPhone much worse about 50 times and never had an issue). The phone and the case are in mint condition, it shouldn't be malfunctioning from a 3 foot fall on a sheet vinyl floor with a case on it. But it is. Maybe its just my unit, but this is a fragile phone.
If you're in an area with a poor cell signal, your smartphone will try to connect to the nearest cell tower and drain your battery quickly. I thought there was an issue with my Pixel 6 battery but after buying an iPhone 13, I later found out that poor cell signal does drain your battery rather quickly.
Try enabling WiFi Calling and choose WiFi as your preference, then enable Airplane Mode with just WiFi turned on. This is what I do when I'm at home and then turn off Airplane mode when I'm out and about (obviously).

That's not true itself. I'm in a poor cell area and normally only see 4% drain overnight with phones over the years. This is the amount I expect, no more. If any phone ever sees 10% or more overnight then it has a problem either software or hardware.

I've seen this with my last Samsung but 1-3 reboots in a row always fixes it for a week or two. Normally only needs 1 reboot a week. Its in a system installed app or code.
However, battery drains can be caused by literally anything lol. Any app can cause it. Any system app can cause it. Even the OS can cause it. It could be in anything technically.
Batteries can go bad but you'd likely see something else happening if the battery was going bad or if the fall did it. I really don't think that's the issue here but suppose if it is then you have an odd situation where the battery drains from 100% to 0% smoothly.

That's not true itself. I'm in a poor cell area and normally only see 4% drain overnight with phones over the years. This is the amount I expect, no more. If any phone ever sees 10% or more overnight then it has a problem either software or hardware.
I've seen this with my last Samsung but 1-3 reboots in a row always fixes it for a week or two. Normally only needs 1 reboot a week. Its in a system installed app or code.
However, battery drains can be caused by literally anything lol. Any app can cause it. Any system app can cause it. Even the OS can cause it. It could be in anything technically.
Batteries can go bad but you'd likely see something else happening if the battery was going bad or if the fall did it. I really don't think that's the issue here but suppose if it is then you have an odd situation where the battery drains from 100% to 0% smoothly.

No, it was dropped from 3 feet onto a sheet vinyl floor, no visible damage but that's when it started. Something internally got messed up. It took a month but Straight Talk sent me a new A53, and no battery drain at all now. Straight Talk is another issue...smh

Really though a phone replacement doesn't mean it wasn't software. I'm an app developer and can't even go simply based on that.
Is it possible to have a smoothly draining battery from a drop? Probably in some rare weirdly odd corner of the universe lol. Maybe you did find the corner.
At least its solved anyway. That's really all that counts.

Yeah, the small drop was definitely the issue; Wi-Fi was not connecting or not staying connected. It wasn't software, I reset the device and same issue. It must've popped Wi-Fi antenna loose or caused a short somewhere. New phone and now I lose 1 - 2% overnight. Now to unlock it from straight Talk.
Did anyone encounter the same problem??
Two 5ii of mine are draining too fast this month.
I don't think it's a hardware problem, but a software problem.

I noticed that too for a week.
It must have been some Google service update that generated a lot of unusual wakelocks.
In my case, it's gone and back to normal.
reboot your device just in case
Same here as I texted this. I've getting SOT like less than 4 hours per day even I've restricted battery on some apps and restricting background data. However the issue still persists.
Kinda agree with the Google Service Update thingy since after some play store or updates installed and the battery drainage is just absurd.
Also throttling the CPU a lot and temperature is higher than usual, almost achieving 40°C in just usual social media, browsing and working.
Worst is that I've reboot in safe mode, and multiple restarts and is still draining battery vigorously.
Hope some software or google updates can solve this issue quickly.
From my experience (see my previous post) i had the problem for about 1 week and then it went away.
And lately, I'm getting the best-ever deep sleep battery consumption during night: ~3% .
I did not tweak any app battery policy in settings and I'm using stock A12 latest update.
You may have some rogue app update that is not in tune with the correct power management posture.
I have the same issue. It seems to have been triggered by poor network connectivity or something. The first time I had this issue, I had to solve it via software repair. I'm not keen to go through the process for the second time. I have shut down and restarted my phone several times.

I have had the same huge battery drain, with my phone going from lasting two days between charges, to now getting hot and lasting just 15 hours
When I look at running apps, I see Gooogle Play Services has 2 or 3 instancnces. Some with 13 services. In the last two weeks Play Services has used 825Mb of data. Feels like my phone has become an AV transmitter.
Hello guys, today I noticed that the battery is finally back to normal. I turned on auto-update for everything and let it update whatever it needs to at the very first place.
Hope this kind of **** don't happen ever again.
I don't have auto-update and that issue only lasted a few days
