Another battery drain question - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have had my nexus 5 for just over a week now and i have seen people mention that the battery life is poor at the beginning and it eventually gets better after few charges but I seem to be getting 2.5hrs max screen on time. I am not a heavy user and i dont play a lot of games, mainly browsing, whatsapp, facebook, hangouts..
I have tried using ART aswell but the battery is still the same.
When i got the phone from UK play store (32gb) it didnt require an update on first boot which is different from what I have seen in review videos. I am not sure if that could be the problem. Do u recommend me to reset the phone to its factory settings and start again?
thanks you for your help

I'd say most people get better battery over time because they go through settings and disable a few battery draining options. WiFi always scanning, hot word, etc. You can also monitor all your battery statistics to give you a better idea of what is causing drains for you.
Out of the box 2.5-3hrs SoT is normal, 4-5 hours is attainable on stock. I've seen no definitive proof that ART increases battery life in a significant way.

battery life gets better because we get to know the device statistics and tweak it...
see if there are any apps running in background..
Disable Google now if you dont use it..
adjust your gps settings..
and even though wi-fi is not turned on it keeps on scanning if apps request. so disable it in wi-fi menu...
If you are Rooted user:use Greenify

Post up some pics of your battery stats from BBS and Gsam and we can try to help

It's really possible to optimize it. My N5 is running for 50h now including 2,5h screen-on time, 1h talking and 8h airplane mode (sleep time).
Check the battery stats... Some Google services consume a lot of energy over the day. Especially the hot-word function. I turned of many things... my phone is only syncing contacts and calendar.

Battery losing 1% each minute.

Hello i just bought a Nexus 5 red 16GB and i saw that the battery was losing 1% every 1 or 2 minutes , even if i'm just doing normal things like SMS/Internet ( and not using camera and YouTube ).
I use the low-consumption location setting and i disabled nearly all the Google apps/Twitter/etc.. notifications.
Is it normal?
Thank you !
Btw : i'm on low brightness and there is 70% battery remaining , with 50minutes on-screen use.

Yes. It's a fact of life that using your phone will drain battery... especially if using services that rely on data connection like SMS and internet.
Now if you were loosing 1% per minute in standby with the screen off, then I'd be concerned.
If you're still worried then try these apps...
Battery Monitor
Wakelock Detector
BetterBatteryStats
Greenify

Ok but , i see many guys with stock rom that have 4-5 on screen battery life , however for me it would be 3h max...
It is possible to get 5 hours of screen on but with data and wifi turned off and doing light things... It might help to restrict background data for all the apps you don't want to run in the background and also greenify them(it hibernates them). With 3g on battery consumption increases dramatically at least in my case

i installed Greenify and i only see one app that i greenified, btw could you explain me what you mean :
"With 3g on battery consumption increases dramatically at least in my case" ?
On my N5 there is really huge difference between battery consumption on wifi and on 3g... Wifi can give me around 3-4 hours of screen on and 3g gives me only around 2-3... Thats why I have background data restricted for majority of apps and for default data type I have sellected 2g

You can get 5+ hours sot with everything on, Wi-Fi, data, bt, location, auto screen brightness. I do. But it's how you setup and use your phone. I don't do games or social media. Nor do I use any battery saving apps, like greenify. Here's one with location off

My charger is making light noise as well, but only when the phone is unplugged from it or when the battery is fully charged.

battery life has everything to do with how you use your device personally, how you personally set it up, which apps you use, and very importantly the quality of your phone and data connection.

Ok guys , today i finally had 3h50 of on-screen and a total of 10hours ( i wanted to test the battery so i think if i use it normally i'll have 3-4hours of on-screen and 15+ hours in total. )
Thank you guys.
By the way , i found that my wifi and 3G/4G connection was cut-off several times ( actually it seems to be connected but when i want to use internet it's not working and i need to reset the concerned connection ) , maybe this explains that problem.
Your time is normal for your setup and usage. You have location on. And probably multiple apps accessing it. Facebook is constantly loading posts and pics, that takes some juice. Etc...etc.
3 hoursish of SoT is normal in that scenario.
I get 24 hours plus and 6 plus hours of SoT consistently. But I have location off, no social apps other than Tapatalk, rarely use the "phone"...I text....and don't game. I greenify some apps that I know drain battery. I use display brightness from play store for a manual brightness slider to keep screen as dim as I can take. Gnow off. Well, you get the idea. Lol
Is it a dumbphone now? Well, 1 or 2 toggles and its plenty smart. And I rarely see battery life much higher than mine. So it suits my needs. If I worked an office job and could charge anytime, I'd have everything on too.

I thought it seemed normal for his set-up too.
You're drain and screen on time are impressive!
These are my standard settings, which I've used on most of my phones to squeeze the best out of the battery without sacrificing too many of the features:
Brightness 40%
All vibration off
All location services off
Google Now off
WiFi always on
3G(H+) selected instead of 4G (unavailable in my city)
x3 Gmail accounts with Push notifications on
Weather update every 4hrs
Facebook update every 4hrs but for messages only
Greenify most apps apart from essential stuff like SMS, Gmail, Hangouts, Play etc
Restrict background data for non-essential apps
I'm currently using Purity with default kernel settings and with normal usage I get around 2-3 days / 3-4hrs SoT. That's checking FB & BBC News a few times a day, a bit of Chrome, sending and receiving a few texts, maybe a few rounds of Solitaire. Even If I'm playing more demanding games or using Chrome for longer periods I'm still getting around 24hrs. I live in the city so get strong reception, and connect to WiFi at home and work so barely even use mobile data unless I'm out and about. However, when I'm out in the countryside or in an area where signal is poor I notice my battery takes a big hit.
So, the holy trinity of set-up, usage and signal quality... everyone's is different

2 or 3 days!? Amazing! Good job.
I usually use 6 hours a day....so 24 to 28 hours is my norm.
If I could use it less, hopefully I'd be around your time. Hopefully. Lol
Overnight drain is usually 0.3 to 0.5 per hour.

Is The Nexus 5 Battery THAT Bad? Or Am I Unlucky?

When I first got my Nexus 5, I got about 3.5 hours of SOT. This is with airplane mode 24/7. Note, I still have my phone in airplane mode 24/7. I upgraded to Lollipop 5.0 but before that I was getting bad battery. 5.0 I get about 2.5 hours. Now with 5.1 I got 2 hours. Barely.
I have used the troubleshooting battery life thread and searched around, tried custom ROMs, kernels, everything. Not a thing helps. BBS and Wake lock Detector show absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.
I've had my phone a little over a year now, and its just deteriorated. Is it just my phone? Bad battery perhaps? Or is everyone getting this awful battery?
I know what everyone is going to say to, it depends on usage. And it does, but to an extent. I'm a light user, I'd say. Greenify installed, I use Kik sometimes, little camera here and there and messenger to talk to people. That's literally it. If I have the phone sit there and do nothing I get good battery, well, better. But it seems switching apps or touching it at all hurts battery. I've tried App Ops, and location is off and sync. Literally every piece of advice I have tried.
So just a general question, how is everyone's battery holding up? It is really that bad? Or am I just unlucky. Nexus 6 has better battery and bigger screen but average battery. Which is sad. I think its software and bad battery related.
You definitely have a problem there the nexus 5 should last you much more than that even on lollipop

That's what I'm thinking. It used to be such a good phone, nothing is draining battery and nothing out of the ordinary is draining... :/ I think it is just a bad, used up battery.
Well you did look into replacing it with a G2 battery, you'll lose QI charging but have a bigger battery
It's not just you. In fact I'm very close to just going back to kitkat. I get no wakelocks, my phone shows as in deep sleep and just today my phone came off charge at 11am and was dead by around 5pm with half hour screen on time. That's just ridiculous! It was showing as deep sleep the entire time.
I've tried everything. I'm 80% sure lollipop is the problem because I know a lot of people with the same issues. Anything Google related I've turned off and I still can't shake this battery drain
If you're using airplane mode then you should get more, I get above 4 hours with adaptive brightness and a signal.
Sounds like a bad battery or something isn't right software wise
Feel free to posts stats and stuff, maybe have a look at what the times are for your cpu frequencies

Definitely something wrong. I've got a launch week device putting it at almost 18 months old. I leave absolutely everything turned on, even have Google Fit tracking steps, Facebook app, and a couple games. I have also overheated the battery several times during bootloops. Just today I finished out a charge cycle with just over 3 and a half hours SOT, including 2 hours Bluetooth music, and just under an hour of wired headphone music using ViPER4Android with a couple options known to drain more battery.
I'd look into Better Battery Stats for some hidden kernel wakelocks.

I came from a Galaxy S3. The Nexus 5 battery isn't that great, but your description sounds like you're unlucky. I went from Kitkat to Lollipop on the N5 and the battery life was definitely better. Perhaps try the Elemental X kernel?

I'm running CM12(5.0.2).
The only thing keeping me from trying to replace my battery is that there are occasional days right after a reboot where everything work as is should. (I.E., 3-4 Hr SoT, Bluetooth streaming 30min or so, 16-24hr total time). After that first day it goes to **** and I get maybe 1-2 hrs SoT and 12-16hrs total time. I'm just waiting on 5.1.1 at this point. In the mean time, it just lives on a wireless charger if I can access one at home or work easily.
If I'm a baseline (I'm probably not) then you certainly seem to have a problem.
I do seem to get marginally worse battery life on Lollipop, but still nothing to complain about - considering. Generally I get 3.5+ SOT over a 14+hour day (from 85% as I almost never let it run lower than 15-10%). That's with every service turned on (including precise location & always listening), and I normally listen to at least 2-3 hours of podcasts (accelated playback + skip silences, both processor-heavy) and some Tune-In radio & Play Music. Playback is usually a split between BT & the phone's internal speaker. My normal usage is almost all on Wi-Fi. 3G can be disappointing & will sometimes eat through my battery significantly faster.

To be honest kit Kat is the nexus 5s Prime os I doubt it's going to get better than that
You guys have to remember the jump from JellyBean to KitKat was nowhere near as expansive as the jump from KitKat to Lollipop and Google spent a year refining KitKat to 4.4.4. We're less than half a year into Lollipop. Yes, Lollipop should be in a much better state than what it is but obviously Google fell short of that mark.
my N5 also over 1 year, light usage but even with 2hrs SOT I still have at least 40% battery
p.s. wifi and bluetooth is always on

Okay you guys (and hopefully others) take a look at this battery. I did play Clash of Clans somewhat today and got den m decent battery but yeah. Any thoughts? Bluetooth streaming to my stereo still used 2 percent in 10 minutes. I'm adding more to a new post. I think I may have a bad battery still because even though it said 98 it went to 99 for a brief minute. I see messenger and Line during battery some, and cause wake issues but FB is greenified. Messenger isn't... Also the other apps like Google Calendar, and the Google App itself cause battery drain, and it shows Android OS in battery under screen.
More screenshots hopefully adding

I do suck at math, but 2% per 10 minutes of bt streaming doesn't really sound that awful. That seems to work out to 8+ hrs of active usage. Most of my battery drain on streaming audio comes from the apps themselves - Most of my listening is of podcasts where I'm playing at 1.5x speed +skip silence which are both processor-heavy. TuneIn is pretty battery-hungry (and annoyingly buggy!) as well. Play Music seems a bit easier on my battery, but I'm mostly listening to the non-music apps & I probably don't do much better than 2% per 10(ish) minutes a lot of the time.
It's fairly common to see your battery level jump up or down a point or two once in a while. Others can better explain this technically, but I gather it's just refining the estimate of where you are at the moment.
*Edit* Looking at your screenshots, I don't see the app that you're streaming on. ?

Dreadful Battery Life

Hi guys,
My battery life is killing me, I don't think I've ever had it this bad before! It's on par with my iPhone 6, but I know there are others who are getting much battery life, yet their set ups seem exactly the same?
I have all bloat ware disabled, any apps that I do not use have been disabled. Majority of the time Bluetooth is off, NFC stays on, Location and GPS are on too. My daily commute is about half an hour. I set off and by the time I get to work with 20 minutes screen on time, I'll have about 85%. Sometimes it's worse.
A collegue has his device set up exactly the same as mine as far as I can tell and is getting much better battery life. We compared the other day, he was on 63% I was on 75% but his phone said 13 hours remaining, mine said 9.
Cheers

Even setup the same, people use phones differently, they also when they travel have different signal zones etc.
The other evening around 6pm I still had 53% with what is said was 12 hours left and I had just about used 11hours at that time.
I have GPS on full, Wifi on most of the time, only use BT when I use it in the truck, have a lot of stuff I don't use turned off, but use hangouts, camera (awesome), a few SMS, some calls and a lot of forum checking.

It's crazy, if anything I know our routes and he has worse signal on the way to work. We both had a similar screen on time with the same apps using battery, just Facebook and the usual Google Play Services, I'm quite experienced with drains caused by Google Play Services but there seems to be no drain. The most it's ever kept the phone going is like 10 minutes in a day. The screen is always the biggest drain, but my brightness is the same as him, 50% on auto-brightness.

40 minutes of SoT at 77% isn't actually TOO bad, especially if you have been in brightly lit areas/outside. This would equate to about 3 hours of SoT, which isn't good, but I've seen worse.
What is your standby drain?
Also, have you installed Gsam to see what it says is using your battery? And what apps DO you use?
I haven't installed that application, but in terms of standby drain it's probably 1-2% an hour, I don't seem to notice taking it out of my pocket and being shocked.
Main apps I use are What's app, Facebook and Spotify, but my music on Spotify is downloaded and so it should not be streaming.

Really bad battery life

Hello all,
I just bought a new galaxy s7 silver (exynos variant) around 3 days ago and my battery life seems to be really bad. I've only managed to achieve 1h 56m screen on time and I'm already at 41%! I keep auto brightness on and leave always on display off and don't keep things like mobile data active. If anyone can suggest how to fix this it would be phenomenal .
I was quite sad considering I have heard of people who can achieve 5+ hours screen on time with regular usage and not having to compromise on switching everything off .
Thanks for the help in advance
Do you have Google Chrome installed? And can you see something like "media server" in you battery usage log as a high power consumer?

I would send you a picture of my battery statistics but for some reason every time I try to upload a picture I get "network error"
My top consumers are :
Screen 31%
Android system 19%
Android OS 9%
Cell standby 7%
Mediaserver 4%
And Also I do have Google Chrome installed
Good day.
Try this and see if it works:
-In settings -> privacy and safety -> location -> improve accuracy - Turn off wifi scanning (The phone turns on and off wifi regularly for location purposes and it uses some battery)
-In settings -> Display - Turn off smart stay
-In settings -> Advanced features - Turn off pop-up view gesture, Smart capture, palm swype to capture, smart alert and easy mute.
-In settings -> Accounts - Turn off auto sync
Turn off hardware step counter at S-health app.
Use Greenify to hibernate samsung and google play app and services.
And if you want to stretch it more have a look at this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/how-to/touchwiz-bloatware-save-to-remove-list-t3330241)
Hope it works for you.

Hi mate,
The 2nd guy in this post touched on it. When you see Mediaserver on your battery stats it's normally a sign that your phone, since being on, has got quite hot and there has been substantial battery drain. I've had this same issue before too. Factory resetting etc wouldn't help. And the phone would get so hot. Eventually I read and found a link between Google chrome and Mediaserver. I deleted chrome and mysteriously the issue left, that was on my last s7. My current s7 I got yesterday and haven't got this issue once, despite using chrome right now.

Yeah I did notice that the phone was heating up rapidly and my battery life was falling heavily. I will delete it and give an update to see if it works.
Thank you
Right I tried it and at first I thought that it worked but then today I am down to 25% with only 2h 5mns screen on time. Anyone got any other ideas?
Sorry read that wrong lol I read 25% battery for 2 hrs screen on time!
Accounts syncing in the background could be a culprit or some of the fancy software functionality that Samsung cook in to touchwiz. I generally don't have anything working or syncing that I don't use.
Might be worth going through all of your settings one by one. That's what I did when I first got the phone.

I'll give it a shot , how does your battery life seems to do? also, do you use power saving mode ?
At this moment in time I've had 2 hours 44 minutes of screen on time and I've got 53% battery left.
The majority of that usage has been on WiFi though and I do have auto brightness enabled. One thing I have noticed about the s7 screen is, it is very good quality and incredibly bright. I have spent a good amount of time tweaking the auto brightness so the screen isn't any brighter than it needs to be in various light conditions.
I was suffering from rapid battery draining and the phone getting overly warm when I had Google Chrome installed. I've removed it, and it has taken those issues away completely.
I have come from a nexus 6p and don't miss the extra 500mAh of battery to be honest.
3hr 28 minutes of screen on time now with 43% battery left. Still on WiFi but have been playing a bit of order and chaos 2, reading the news, browsing forums and general Internet surfing. I don't have much on in terms of push notifications other than Gmail and have my Samsung Internet app syncing and some stuff related to my Google account.
If it's of any help at all, my phone is on the 3 network in the UK running the stock 3 branded firmware.

Good news mate!
Alright all was going well regarding batteey life until recently when it began to slack off again. I hopped in to srttings see what was consuming all of my battery life and it said android system. Anyone know what that's all about?

Very limited SOT with OP6 128gb

Hi,
I am running OOS 5.1.11 with xxxNoLimits and radioactive kernel all freshly installed from scratch (my phone was wiped and oem locked then unlocked again). I still only manage to get 2hrs of SOT which is absolutely awful. Please help me
Attached is the battery usage graph.
Kind regard and thanks for any help.

Using Snapchat with 4G, is location, nfc and bluetooth also turned on?
That would explain the bad battery.
Snapchat is a battery hog, maybe also using some facebook services that you allowed location on and GPS is turned on.
I get around 6h SOT on 4G constant, no facebook permissions and not using snapchat.
Hi,
Thank you for the fast response. I have location turned on because of snapmaps so I will turn that off and limit some of Snapchat's permissions. Is there anything else that someone can suggest please it is crucial for me that my phone lasts all day because eventhough I dedicate quite a lot to Snapchat I also need it for word and Samsung internet for at least 2h each day.
Thank you again
Reduce your time on Snapchat and it'll last longer.
I know Snapchat drains my battery but it's the standby that is killing me and I already have optimised the apps and have Greenify but it seems so far that turning off location has helped quite a bit with general SOT so thank you. Also with Snapchat I only used it for 45mins and I know that it drain a lot but it just goes down too fast in general.

You don't generally need Greenify in Oreo and Pie, since they optimise apps pretty nicely on it's own.
Rather turn on advanced optimizations, look at the permission you gave to different apps (those also include the Gapps, they take too much advantage of all the permissions you give to the each app).
Also do check if you have Wifi scanning always on in the advanced wifi settings, that also lessens a battery by a margin.
Face unlock also reduces the SOT of the phone in my practice.
Some of the advices I saw on the forum, and mainly they work for me.
Also, if Gapps are spending loads of battery go to the recovery and wipe cache, let it rebuild cache with a charge or two and see if there are any results.
Thank you, I have cleared the cache and am letting it rebuild. The SoT now actually seems pretty normal just my phone tends to use 2-3% and hour on standby which doesn't seem normal. Thank you for your help though.
@echo246 Bro,
Move to stock. I am also using 128Gb variant and unlocked, wiped and moved back to stock using mega-unbrick tool. I am on OB3 pie and now I am getting 5 hr SOT + 2 days standby time in pure stock. use the stock battery optimizing features. Don't use any 3rd party app since it need to run in the back ground always to get the result. But then the result will be reverse. Also, don't be too curious and open the phone every 1 minute to check weather the battery is draining or not. Let it sleep. Be patient for one or two full battery circle (100% to 1%) get the result. You will get it. I am also in dual SIM always on 4G, location is in "ON" status. No 3rd party apps using for battery saving. Pure stock is always best and most suitable for every phone. as it made exclusively for that phone
I opened "apps" under settings and went through each and every app + system processes after the end of the first battery circle and which ever process or app used more battery, restricted it's back ground battery usage also all the installed apps too. So now no head ache. getting whats app notification even after optimised it. Not using chrome. using samsung beta browser.
Hi,
Thanks this is great thanks. I need Google pay though I tried what the other suggested and 36mins SoT with 3 hours on standby with a normal brightness without power saving mode on is unheard of for me. Thank you so far but is there anyway to make Snapchat more efficient?

I don't know whether you have replied to me or not. Anyway I assume so and replying.
Sorry I am not a snapchat user. I knew that always Facebook and whatsapp consuming more battery since it is running on background. But if you do anything, you won't get proper notifications. Only way for restricting background service is rooting. So forget all those, let the phone run as it is. OP6 is having a learning system how we use apps and accordingly it will distribute the battery. So let it learn from your usage and it will restrict itself.
(Bro, I was also a SOT + standby hunter like you, but now learned to leave everything to phone itself by controlling unwanted eagerness)
Yeah thanks by limiting the WiFi settings on not to scan and turning off location I have amazing standby now and my SoT without even having power saving on is a lot better now. Most of my problems come from Snapchat anyway but they are rewriting the very old and slow app ATM. Thank you
I have analyzed it and it turns out it is just Snapchat while using it 30 mins of using it and I'm down to 77% and I have used nothing else. Hope that snap Inc get the fix in faster coz they started the rewrite of the android code a year ago so hopefully it is done soon.
Some days I get 15hrs SOT without charging for 3 days. It all depends on how heavily your using the device
I also guess it depends on what apps you use because yesterday I had to do lots of research on my phone (I am a student which is why I need good phone battery and also why I use snapchat so much) and without power saving mode on I used 7% battery an hour (on Samsung Internet). My standby is now amazing because greenify just force closes snapchat now whenever my phone is off and when using snapchat away from home I turn location off (snapmaps) and used every optimisation for it possible. This has fixed that problem really well thank you. Yesterday I used snapchat and Samsung Internet and Excel and YouTube quite a lot and I got 5hrs SoT with only using power saving below 50% and with 14hrs standby. This therefore concludes that snapchat is a killer for every single android phone in existence (verified this on my old S6, my friends S6 edge, a S7 edge, a OP 5 and a Huawei P20 Pro). Thank you for all your help and if someone finds a new way to further improve this, then please also share your trick

I don't have anything special enabled. I just turn data off when I'm not using it, I turn location off when it's not needed. This also includes me playing Clash Royale for at least 3 hours a day sometimes more. When you're using SnapChat and your data you're also using your camera and location. GPS is one of the most battery hogging pieces of hardware on your phone. Right now I'm pushing 6 hours of SOT and I haven't charged my phone in over 24 hours and it's looking like I have 13 more hours left on my battery.
