Horrible call quality - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Everything was fine and dandy with calls being loud and clear, until about a few days ago.
One day the call quality from my side just randomly went from great to terrible.
I can hear the other side just fine, but from my side its really low-volume and barely hearable.
Things I've tried:
-Flashing different radios (25R,30O,33R,Find7, radio from the latest nightlies)
-Flashing different ROMs and kernels
-Switching network modes (LTE, 3g, 2g)
-Combinations of the above
If anyone has experience dealing with issues like this/knows anything to improve the call volume from my side, any help would be very much appreciated.

You are not alone, I've had similar issues. For me speaker phone still works perfect, its just my voice during a regular call that's terrible.

Yup, the speakerphone works great but its inconvenient.
Gutted to have such a basic function impaired.
Hopefully this issue will be fixed by the next OTA, which should be next week around Monday.

Same here. My call quality is really bad. When I am speaking on the phone I'm typically running around desperately trying to find a quieter place, with the phone held up to my left ear and a finger plugged right into my other ear, hunched over like Quasimodo in a desperate attempt to understand 50% of what the other person is saying.
I learned one thing from the OPO. You actually do get exactly what you pay for. Lesson learned. :good:

win
So, after updating to the latest version of vanir and re-flashing the 33R radio, my in-call volume magically got back to normal.
I wish everyone affected best of luck and patience :fingers-crossed:

OPO hype much more than the phone deserves. Not going to last long

@Kiahnlliya I agree with you 100%. Same lesson learned. In fact, if it was not for the invite system, I wouldn't have bought this phone. I just had to own the phone, most difficult to buy.

@Kiahnlliya @jrior001 @latenightchameleon My in call audio volume from the earpiece is really very low & muffled. I think I am audible on the other end, coz haven't got any complaints from people talking to me. I am on stock 33R unrooted. This is really annoying & really hope I can get rid of this issue with a firmware upgrade.

You should try the latest cm nightlies, they've pushed a bunch of improvements to audio and volumes.

It's a very simple fix if rooted. You need to edit a value in mixer_paths.xml. Some custom ROMs increase the value.

It'll be very helpful if you could please let us know what exactly has to be edited, with what values, in the mixer_paths.xml file.
Thanks in advance.

You can find all the details in this thread or just flash the zip.

hi, is there a way to increase incall volume to the earpiece without root? im not rooted and cant hear people im trying to talk to. if so please help

No you'll need root or custom recovery to flash the zip unfortunately. Otherwise you will need to wait for your ROM to be updated. CM have merged this in their commits so hopefully if your on stock CM11S you'll see this in the next update.

thanks alot mate for the fix.

Simple fix found
Hey i was having the same robotic voice on the reciever's side as well and i found a simple fix for it! just disable the "ok google" detection and delete your voice recording as well. It worked for me.. It might work for you as well.

Hissing when audio starts

So not sure what's up, using that icecream fake rom and OC kernel, and I hear audio hissing most noticible through headphones when there is a noise, there is a hissing going on. It stops after audio stops though, not sure what's up.
I don't know if my rom and kernel are related to this, may have been here before? Anyone else notice this?
Try putting different rom and see the issue is still there cauz I been running ice cream rom with faux123's kernel and never had single problem like this.

Just tried this and still the same problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426590
Guess my phone is broken?
Also tried returning the ICS one to stock same problem. Also tried it on my hd595 headphones, same problem.
I should mention it does it on the speakers as well, but it's much less noticible.
Do factory reset and if its still bad than you have bad hardware.

By factory reset do you mean like unroot and all?
Well try out stock rom first and if you still have problem than i am pretty sure its ur phone but going stock won't hurt because you would be returning them any way.

It's not your ROM its he audio chip in the phone. There is a thread in skyrocket general where we have been discussing it.
Only workaround is bluetooth or higher quality headphones kinda mask it.

So what exactly did you guys do for workaround?

Wait so all phones do this? But I mean it's so loud... well there is a tiny scratch on it too, might as well replace it anyway.
I can't use bluetooth headphones though because I have an icontrolpad and I don't think it can connect to multiple audio devices. Oh well, I don't use it for heavy music stuff, but I mean it's just really loud that hissing.

Yup, just some of us notice it and others don't. I forget about it unless I try to hear for it. If it's extremely loud I'd get a replacement
So replaced it, same problem. Oh well, but I mean I guess you can ignore it, but hissing bugs me, not enough to not love this phone though.
Even have LTE in Pleasanton.

[SOLVED] Call echo problem in 4.4 roms

I'm getting echo problem in 4.4 roms (cm11, slim kat) with and without jbx. The person on other side hears his/her own echo , it's fine on mine side. & this is not occasional, it is heard during all calls whenever i'm on 4.4 rom. Tried installing multiple times, on fresh slot but to no avail.
There is no such problem in ics or jb roms. Please help..
At&t atrix2 using in India
I've never faced that problem in 4.4...anyway if this issue occurs to you I think it's better to stick with other 4.3 and 4.2 ROM's there are a lot of them in Development section also there is no such huge improvements from 4.3 to 4.4 which makes you insist on getting the latest builds with that serious problem.
Note: Don't use the in-call volume adjustment app as someone reported the same echo issue, Just clean the partition (clear data, cache and dalvik cache) and install the 4.4 ROM again and make a call normally without any other modification "No jbx, No volume adjust app" and see the result.
EDIT: Solution is to Use the in-call volume app and change the value to 35 as reported by @dmroeder
Good luck.
I'm more inclined towards 4.4 roms mainly because of hugely improved battery life compared to earlier kexec roms.
I'm not using the call volume adjustment app. I've tried installing on a freshly created system but the results have been same.

Your problem is nothing you have done wrong, it's a common bug in most ROM's since 4.2.2. I ran a couple of 4.2.2 ROM's that didn't have this problem but all 4.3 and 4.4 ROM's have it.
I think there is confusion on two different issues here. The caller on the other end of your phone hearing an echo is a result of the in-call volume being maxed out and not adjustable. I think what happens is when it is maxed out, it's so loud that the mic picks it up and they hear it again on their end. The app allows you to adjust the volume again. Have you tried using it? I set mine at 35. You will see that the first time you run it, it is at 50. I think the latest version allows the volume buttons to adjust the volume.
رامز, Are you able to adjust your volume during the call? Are you certain you are talking about the same issue? I got the impression that this "robo voice" issue was heard by the A2 user, not the caller.
Downloaded the app and changed call vol to 35. Let's see. Fingers crossed..

yes, I know that issue was submitted by other users before but really I've never faced it "remember that my A2 is at&t version" and actually I don't need to adjust the in-call volume as I mostly talk in open areas so I always leave it to max.
BTW:I'll try it again tonight and tell you the result
Great..! It works like charm.!

That is very strange. I also have an AT&T Atrix 2 and I have the "call volume" issue. You should ask the caller if they hear themselves echo. Most people that I talk to don't mention it, my mom however is not one of those people! I do notice though that the speaker is very loud when this issue is present.
And when I say maxed out, the caller comes across much louder than say with the stock ROM set at max. It's almost like our phones go to 11 [/spinal tap]

I've just finished a call with my friend and I asked him about my voice, He did mention small echo effect but it's hardly noticed "that's what he said". I forget to mention that I've disabled the "Noise Suppression" option in the dialer settings so maybe this has reduced the problem echo effect..not sure

You should have asked whether he heard his own voice echoing.. And yes, most callers don't mention about this problem even it is always present , or maybe the echo effect is higher sometimes(???)
I've also tried disabling noise suppression, but it didn't help.

regarding to your comment I had to test it again but this time I called my brother and told him to record the call, so I can confirm that the call is 100% normal and even my voice echo is barely noticed and no other echo is present at all " I can even upload the record here". it's really strange that echo issue happens to some people and others just switch to 2G (like mine) and problem get solved!
I'm not questioning your authenticity. Maybe it's just because of different make of our handsets..! (As in case of clock speeds 1ghz/1.2 ghz)

Microphone problem

Well. I have this issue since I bought the phone.
So, when using the microphone, either during calls or recording myself, the sound output is really low.
When on calls, people often complains about how low they're hearing me, and when I record myself and then listen to it, the sound is indeed really low.
I'm on Mahdi, using Franco Kernel (clean install).
Is there anyone suffering this or know any possible fix?
There's as fix for that. It's in this q&a section or the general section I believe.

[Q] Running SULTAN and earpiece is very weak - fix?

Hi.
So it seems that for some odd reason, SULTAN (dev) decided to lower the speaker volume in his ROM.
I found THIS LINK which should help:
But - and pardon my noobishness here - I don't seem to find directory.
1. Do I need a special file explorer to reach this directory?
2. Do I need to be rooted (i am not)?
Thanks!

Thanks! That's a no no for me. I am not willing to root my phone.
I guess a different rom then.
It confuses me why would a developer REDUCE the earpiece volume.
Any outside noise during a call, and I can't hear a word being said to me by the other side. This is major deal-breaker. Weird. Perhaps I am missing something as to why was this done by the dev.

Should I root my Google Pixel 1?

Hi ! I am using a Google Pixel 1 and I must say that I am really happy with my phone performance. But recently, I am having microphone problem people can hear me on Facebook Messenger or whatsapp calls but while doing direct call via Network Variant they can't hear me properly So I was thinking if there any root app to cancel the noise cancellation mic.
Now my question is will it be a wise thing to root pixel with Magisk?
I don't specifically know if any root app that would help your case... My suggestion is to take some rubbing alcohol and a needle and gently trying to clean the mic holes... There might just be lobby stuck in it
I am thinking about rooting myself,as we won't get anymore updates, any idea where is a good rom to start with, I really can afford to upgrade right now

Hi5 Mate! Even I am also looking for a good rom but there is so many so just confused! Do you havr any idea if we install a custom rom will google stop the support of unlimited photo storage? Google pixel1 is a solid I think it can sustain 4 more updates!
While it's totally feasible and reasonable to root your phone with Magisk (which I have happily done), it's probably not going to fix your microphone problem.
It's a well known hardware bug and I really hope you're not affected.

I had this issue on my Pixel 1 XL recently, but people would only be able to hear me if I was on speakerphone. I had to completely replace the daughterboard (board with charging port on it), and since then it's been working flawlessly. From the research I did it seemed like mics dying on Pixel 1's isn't uncommon.
I recently rooted with Magisk and so far I love it! BUt if you are only wanting to to fix your mic, idk if that would help.
