Galaxy S4 vs Nexus 4
Hello everybody, in here you're going to find a few details about both the Galaxy S4 and the Nexus 4. I have recently owned both of these android devices and also have successfully rooted, installed custom recovery mode's and custom ROMs for.
I will start, where I started. With the Samsung. I found the Galaxy s4 to be a great phone. It played all the games I wanted it to play well, and I couldn't complain really. However being a member of here indicates itself my love for Rooting and such things so I did what was natural to me and began rooting the device.
The first root method I tried was called droid razr root that was supposed to work on Galaxy s4's but the root didn't take when I followed the steps to rooting with it. So I used a different method, Odin and flashed the file and it worked perfect. Once rooted it was easy enough to install twrp from the play store and use the app to flash my recovery. Then I simply flashed a slimkat 4.4.4 ROM following instructions. The phone was, asyoud expect pretty cool. I've had a lot of slimROMs so the whole ui and feel wasn't that new to me but was definitely fast and responsive.
OK, so here is where the nexus comes in. I was browsing a local website for swapping things and I swapped my fresh rooted and rimmed S4 for a Nexus 4 and some cash. I was eager to try out the new device.
I did not waste any time in looking for a root method for the Nexus and found it was the easiest device I've come across to root/unlock the boot loader for. Its simply two apps off the play store, i found the forum on XDA. You literally press one button in one
App, reboot. Press a button in the other app, reboot. Install SuperSU reboot done. Then just like the S4 I used the TWRP app to flash TWRP onto my device. Everything went awesome and smooth as expected so I went to looking for a nice ROM. That's when I found Dirty Unicorns. Let's just say, this is the beat ROM I've ever had on any of my phones. Its really really smooth, packed with customization and really well optimized.
As for the question which phone is better? I'd say both. The S4 has an edge on speed, but the nexus 4 has almost everything else.
Hello,
Hello, there are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread. This last one would probably be the best fit for the information you have to share.
Thanks!

Congrats! I just got mine too about 12 hours ago, and just finished rooting it. I used the rooting how-to found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1657056 The only difference I did was I used GT-p5113_ClockworkMod-Touch_recovery_6.0.1.2 instead of the one listed there, and as stated in post 310 (I think it was 310) I made sure to uncheck reboot in Odin. It all worked like a charm. I haven't tried any Roms yet, but when I do I think I'm leaning towards CyanogenMod 10.1. Looks like a winner to me! I mainly rooted to be able to back everything up and get rid of a bunch of bloat, so Roms weren't such a huge incentive for me. Good luck!
Which model do you have? I have the SCH I915 and haven't found a working root method.

For me cyanogens nightlys is the only ROM I've found to have the least amount of bugs so far the rest do work fine the bugs that came with them just annoyed me more due to what I use my tablet for you should give them all a go though they all have there qualities. just my opinion!
First of all please accept my apologies if I am posting in the incorrect site location - this isn't the most user friendly site I've ever come across, but it is definately helpful to to get help from you friendly and helpful people!
I've just purchased a Galaxy Note 2 (N7105 Vodafone Australia). I've managed to unlock, root and install TWRP perfectly.
My problem is that I've tried three different custom roms (and made donations to say thanks) in the last few days and none of them seem to work properly with the s pen. The three roms I've tried are Cyanogen, Android Revolution and Omega (in that order). All three of these roms seem great, until I take out the s pen....
The only one of these three roms that will even recognise when the pen touches the screen is Cyanogen (which is the only of the three roms that don't come with the samsung s pen apps). Both Android Revolution and Omega came with the s pen apps pre-installed, but don't seem to work with the s pen at all?? Am I doing something wrong? Are there s pen drivers or something that I need to install? Omega is currently installed and it does vibrate and make a noise when I remove the pen from the dock, but does nothing when the pen touches the screen.
Another thing to note before anyone tries installing these roms on this device is that, after installing Android Revolution or Omega, the phone has no reception and says sim isn't installed. I managed to correct this on Android Revolution by installing the modem driver on top of the rom - this took me a day or two to figure out it was the issue and how to fix! But it doesn't seem to fix the problem with Omega rom, which is my favourite (apart from the problems listed).
I know its a pretty new phone and therefore there aren't many tried and tested roms, but the three I've tried are pretty common so I was expecting more information about them online than what I've found. Any assistance or advice in relation to getting the s pen to function and the phone to recognise the sim card on Omega v13 with my N7105 would be greatly appreciated. If I can't fix this pretty quickly I'm going back to stock rom until there's more info out there about roms that work with the N7105.
thanks
No mistake posting here but since note 2 has a dedicated forum, you should ask it there.

Hey not sure if you found what you were looking for over in the Note II forum or not but it sounds to me like you are flashing the wrong ROM. I had similar issues with the SIM not being recognized on my Note II. I was trying the same ROMs you mentioned. Make sure the ROM you are flashing is for the exact model phone you have. Also, some ROMs will require you to flash the correct radio for your carrier.
Definitely head over to the Note II forum to find more specific information but keep those things in mind! Hope this helps!

Thanks. Somebody PM'd me with a link to a few Note 2 roms - but the forum won't let me post it because I'm too new of a member. If anyone needs it just PM me.
I'm trying Aroma, but am now havings issues with TWRP seeing the zip file... I'm still trying - currently copying the zip to the TWRP folder on the sd card because I've found some forums about TWRP reading zips from internal storage. I've also had issues with Clockworkmod on this Note 2, so would rather not have to go back to it. Clockworkmod worked well for me for years on my old trusty HTC Desire HD, but really made a mess of the Note 2... I've only had this phone 8 days and had sooo many issues with just trying to get a custom rom running!! Even if this works, its only Android 4.1.2 - Whereas I've got 4.2.1 running smooth as butter on a two year old HTC

Cool deal. I hope you get it worked out. That is strange that Clockwordmod is giving you issues. That is what I use and it has treated me well. Maybe it has to do with the difference in hardware since I have the US AT&T version? Good luck!
Hey Guys,
I'm quite a Noobie when it comes to ROMS and I haven't ventured into Custom ROMS in any way before. But, because in the infinite wisdom of Samsung (my one B!TCH) is they don't maintain support for older devices like Apple do, I need to consider updating my Tab 2 to get some decent performance.
There appears to be about 4 - 5 ROMS that are being regularly maintained and I'd like to know which one is as close to stock Samsung ROM and easy to install with no requirement to Root the device. I have installed ROMS via Odin quite a few times, so I am confident in that area.
Ones I know about:
SlimKat
CyanogenMod 11
Mokee
SOKP
Cheers and thanks
Willo
Please some help!
People aren't answering because what you're asking for isn't possible. None of them are like the Samsung ROM and they ALL require a custom recovery and root. You can't install them over Odin. If you do root then try them yourself and see which one works best for you. That's part of the fun of Android!
Not to mention you posted a question in the General forum not the Q&A forum...

Hi,
I have not been into android world for long, that being said I managed to install the CWM to my Samsung S4 and now I installed TWRP and SuperSU to my wife's HTC ONE S (S3)...I have been reading some time now and I know the importance of system backups (if I as a n00b mess something up, which I am bound to) and I promise I'm fast learner so any advice you give me I will try to utilize to the maximum.
What I would like to know is, can you recommend me with some safe and nice running custom roms for HTC ONE S. By reading I now know that there are S3 and S4 and that it is unwise to install ROMs for S4 on S3 device, among other things. I would appreciate few links on the forum to get me started now on chaning ROMs (possible KERNELS after I figure what that is in specifics - from my understandings I should stick to changing ROMs and KERNELS later.
Anyways, the aforementioned HTC ONE S is an S3 with stock 4.1.1 JB on it...so, as said what is my next step my good people  Thank you

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this platform and to be honest a bit overwhelmed. Apologize if this thread is in the wrong section.
I should also mention that I'm not too familiar with technical points.
I own an old Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5110) which claims its Android version 4.2.2 is still the most recent one for this device.
So I'm looking for a way to update to a newer versuon, at least Android 6.
My first question is which Android version you suggest?
Second one, how exactly do I do this (is there a step by step tutorial)?
Third one what are the risks? I read something about data loss and completely broken devices?
Thank you in advance.

Mate, I'm on the same boat. Same tablet, also overwhelmed The only response to your post points to some custom ROM page but the instructions are not detailed. I thought I had to throw my tablet but it seems like it still has some life to breath if I can get it a newer ROM (many apps are not supported anymore with Android 4.2).
I think the first thing to do is root the device but where to start? I'd prefer using linux with adb, etc.
There is a lot of stuff here. Is there anyone that has taken the time to write a detailed step by step guide somewhere?
BTW, my intention is not only to revive the device but to ditch all Google crap apps. In an ideal world, I would have installed a ROM from /e/ Foundation, but they do not support the device so I guess my next best bet is some custom ROM that uses LineageOS?
Hi,
First you need to root your device and install TWRP recovery:
More info here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...final-root-single-step-twrp-recovery-t3404779
It's an old thread but you'll get the idea.
See this one as well:
https://www.getdroidtips.com/twrp-recovery-samsung-galaxy-tab-2/
You'll need to find the correct version for your model otherwise you'll and up with a nice paperweight.
After this, you'll be able to back up your current ROM and install new ones. Unfortunately, I have a different model of Tab 2 that has no available custom ROM's so I can't say which ROM is better than other. I would read more in the link provided for slim roms.
To get rid of the installed bloatware and even Google apps I used SD Maid. See my thread below with what's left on my tablet (Disclaimer: it's a barebone setup and not all things work so I don't advise going that deep unless you're willing to take the risk of having a bricked tablet. You were warned!):
