Alright, i ****ed up. need help - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone suddenly started showing zero reception, so i tried wiping it to just get a clean start. Im using TWRP (which i havent really used in the past) and did the "Wipe Data" option rather than the normal wipe because i'm a ****ing idiot. now it says there is no OS installed, so yeah.
I can still boot into recovery but not much else obvously. I'm hoping there's a way for me to mount the phone to my mac and load on a rom and fix it. I understand how stupid i sound but i really need someone to walk me though this. I used to mess around with my GS3 and all my old phones all the time and never had a problem but i haven't with my nexus really since i first got it. I swear i'm not actually retarded.
What are my options here?

You could probably just flash the stock Nexus 5 image from here developers.google.com android section. You'll see a bit saying nexus factory images.
If you can't actually manage to transfer the file on to your phone and flash it from recovery, then just use the tutorial on that page using adb and fastboot.

Yep. The options are fastboot flash stock system and boot.img or adb push a flashable zip to your sdcard and flash via recovery
Click link in signature for sticky then read my adb and fastboot thread

Wiped system. Unable to boot... Please help

I unlocked and rooted my N5. After this I wanted to wipe everything (except my internal storage where I had my new rom and Franco kernel). When I wiped everything I wanted to flash my rom. But I could not find it on my device. It looks like all my folders are empty.
Now I have the problem that I cannot boot, since I wiped the system. Somehow I am unable to add a new rom to a folder.
Can someone help me with this?!!

sideload the ROM you where gonna flash. CWM sideload is working fine. If not push the file with ADB then flash.

I use TWRP as a recovery. I tried to sideload the rom and flashing it (all with wugfresh tool). But it keep hanging when it restarts and wugfresh tool is waiting for the device...
I'm not that familiar working with ADB...
Read the guide in General about going back to stock, and stop using toolkits - it's better to learn it the manual way in the long run

people just dont get that toolkits arent that great.
Toolkits are horrible(IMO). Do you have adb or fastboot installed independent of the tool? If not look at the guides in the general section. Get them installed and start form scratch. I'm assuming you can still enter fastboot and recovery mode. Use those guides to start over by flashing the official image. Then do the rest of it yourself without a toolkit. Trust me you'll be much happier that way. You'll also learn a lot more about your device and the tools needed to recover from things like this. Good luck.
Up and running again!
Tnx for the advice guys!
Appreciate it!

[Q] Flashed wrong Franco Kernel on Nexus 5

I tried flashing the Franco kernel for N4 on my N5 by mistake...now my phone gets stuck on the black reboot screen.

you might not be able to fix it. flashing a kernel meant for a different device can vary easily brick any device.
1. if you can get into your recovery, try flashing the right kernel, even an older version if possible.
2. if that doesnt work, flaah the factory img via fastboot and hope for the best.
3. if still no luck, theres a nexus 4 thread in their general section meant just for accidents like this, find it and try what it says.

You can solve flashing a wrong kernel, but don`t ever flash a N4 bootloader or you are definately screwed. Get rid of anything N4 related from your fastboot folder bro..
The point in the bootloader is for this very thing. Just plug it into your pc and fastboot it
Unless you have a kernel/ rom zip or backup already in the memory then just use recovery

[Q] Failure to flash a ROM, stuck in bootloop now, please help!

I am using a Nexus 5, and I tried to flash the CyanogenMod 11s from OnePlus One to my Nexus following instructions from here:
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/nexus-5-gets-port-cyanogenmod-11s-featuring-android-4-4-4-1458608
My phone was not rooted, I performed a root and apparently succeeded, because I saw SuperSU installed on my device. I then proceeded to follow the instructions from the site mentioned above, performed a factory reset, and selected the ROM I downloaded to flash. The flashing failed and I am currently stuck in bootloop, afraid to proceed further and brick my phone.
Some of the signs I noted with my phone:
At the ROM installation screen, it says 'checking for MD5 file... Skipping MD5 check: No MD5 file found', 'symlink: some symlinks failed', ' E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcar', and 'Error flashing zip '/sdcard/CyanogenMod_11S_ham'
At Reboot menu, upon tapping on 'Recovery' option it says 'No OS installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?'
Please help me out, I'm sick at the moment, guess it is not a good idea to flash a ROM when you're sick huh? Been trying to find a solution and can't seem to find it, not sure if because I'm sick and too tired to read through or there really isn't a situation like this...
Thank you!
first option, adb push a rom and gapps to your phone(while youre in recovery), then flash it. second option, flash the factory img via fastboot while youre in the bootloader. it has nothing to do with being sick, it has everything to do about learning all about your device and how to take care of it, before you start modding your device.
All right, trying now. Did I make any mistakes during my initial process? Please enlighten me. Thanks.
I build my own ROM even when I'm sick, what do you mean?
Try redownloading as it had flashing issues before

no, you didnt actually. you could have had a bad download, that happens often enough(but i dont think its the case, as it wouldnt remove your rom), you also could have experienced a recovery bug, that also can happen from time to time. btw, did you mention which recovery youre using?
I'm using TWRP.

well, try to download it again, and push it to your drvice with adb, then reflash it. or try pushing another rom. or, you always have the failsafe of flashing the factory img. btw, did you happen to make a backup in recovery before you flashed? you should always make a backup in recovery if flashing something new, just in case. in your case, it would make thing extremely easy.
Unfortunately, I did not make a backup. I will learn from this mistake.
I took your advice and started to do a sideload using instructions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/how-to-wipe-internal-storage-install-t2575150
However, I am stuck at no.7, could you please point out how do I carry out instruction no.7?
Thank you so much.

you need to bring up the ui for typing.. on my old windows computer at work, i find an empty space on the same page that adb is located on your computer, then i left click and press the shift button on that empty space, then i get a few option that pop up, and i press the option. but im using windows from like 2004-5, lol.
Wow, that's really old.
I saw one of the commands available is 'adb push 'file name', should I try that?
Sorry for the troubles!
yup. first do "adb devices" to make sure adb sees your phone.
Push command won't work. Neither does the sideload option. It keeps on saying 'cannot read sideload'.

is the rom zip in the same folder as adb is located? it should be if not. and did adb see your device in with adb devices?
Yeah, the ROM is in the same folder as the adb, and device is recognised as in 'sideload' mode.

"first option, adb push a rom and gapps to your phone(while youre in recovery), then flash it."
as @Lethargy said, gapps(google apps), you need to flash them. the google apps are not open source, they are owned by google, and cm isnt allowed to add them to the rom. but you are allowed to flash them separately
Thanks a lot for all the helps given. Really appreciate them! :good:

[Q] HELP! NEXUS Not working anymore!

Hello guys,
I was stupid enough to try and flash stuff, without enough knowledge.
First of all:
I came from 4.4.4. stock rooted with Franco kernal
I did make a backup in TWRP, files are on my pc.
Process:
First of all, I did a factory reset in TWRP
I flashed the rom, radio, kernal for root and supersu.
First boot went fine, although WiFi couldn't be found.
I decided to boot into recovery again to wipe my SD Card
Upon rebooting, phone is looking all black without a real 'launcher', sd card not found etc.
Than:
I managed to push rom, radio, kernal and supersu to /sdcard by adb in rocovery mode
I reflashed all of these, but the same problems occur
What should I do now? I'm ****ting my pants..
Please help me!
Power it off... Hold down both volumes and power to boot into bootloader and fastboot a system and boot img or as you've already wiped sd. The whole lot from Google!

Super su doesn't work unless you flash a custom 5.0 kernel. I flashed hells kernel then su 2.19, zero issues.

factory images downloaded? then follow the instructions of this thread to flash it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/how-to-download-flash-android-5-0-t2937941
MAKE SURE FASTBOOT DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED! (warning). you can check if your device is recognized by running the command 'fastboot devices' (without the quotes). if you get a serial number as return, it means your device is recognized by fastboot.
then follow the instructions of the thread

That worked like a charm! Welcome back Nexus!

messed up recovery ?

May have messed up .....
Stock N5 unrooted and locked.
Was on 5.01 and did a simple factory reset. This ended up with "erasing" hanging for several hours.
Managed to get to fastboot. Any attempt to reboot ended up hanging on "erasing".
Managed to unlock the phone through adb.
Think I managed to install TWRP - it worked once and booted the phone up perfectly (note i still hadnt rooted at this point).
Today, random reboot and it spends ages on the Google wording before going into a boot look with the swirling colours playing.
Got home, put it back into fastboot and (think) managed to root using a one-click tool. TWRP no longer appears and I seem to have stock recovery that I can access but get loads of "cant mount"/"cant open" type messages. ive tried flashing twrp and CWM via ADB and it says successful (takes under a second ?) but neither seem to be present on a reboot ?
How bad have i messed up ??
anyone help ?

It sounds like the first time in bootloader you must have used "fastboot boot recovery..." instead of "fastboot flash recovery..."
Are u using a Windows or Linux pc? If Linux, open a terminal and cd to the directory u downloaded the stock image to, connect ur phone the pc and type "adb reboot bootloader" when the phone reboots type "./flash-all.sh" that should wipe the phone and fix ur issue, it'll flash everything, recovery, rom, radio, and user data

Is there a reason you advise against a toolkit? Just curious, since I rely on one heavily and am wondering if it's going to cause problems down the road.

Because if you had read the thread on fastboot you wouldn't be making this post right now. My advice is go read it thoroughly. Don't worry. It's far far easier than it first looks. I remember first reading a post about it years ago thinking omg my brain is going to explode! But just follow the instructions and once you've used it once you'll think wow that was easy and never use a toolkit again

I did read that thread....a year ago when I used to do all this manually. Since I discovered the toolkit I haven't had a reason to. Was just curious if there was a technical reason for it or just personal preference.
