Frozen apps and OTA update... - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I am rooted only with WeakSauce, everything else is stock. I also have some apps frozen with titanium backup - my question is do I need to unfreeze my apps before I receive the ota update?

I would assume you'd just remove the Weaksauce root and unfreeze any system apps..

Careful now - how do you know if weaksauce still works on 4.4.3? Without S-off I would be reluctant to accept an OTA. Who knows when and if there will be a root exploit?

Unfortunately its been discovered that weaksauce doesn't work with the new update. So hopefully they thought things through before updating

Actually, that was expected. OEM updates will fix what they consider to be security holes. Root exploits are exactly that.
On 4.4.3 weaksauce is dead, firewater is dead, sunshine will be updated but may take weeks according to jcase.

Just rooted my 4.3, is it ok to update my phone?

My old s3 broke, just got my new s3 today. I just rooted my device, and was wondering if it was ok to update my phone. An annoying prompt keeps asking me to update. Dont know if I'm supposed to disable it or update my phone.

Use an app like Titanium Backup, switch to "System" apps via the filter, then press the specific app. Or use a file explorer, grant it root access, then navigate to /System and rename the file to "sdm 1.0.bak" or delete it.
Thank you guys, Got it frozen
Is there a way to do it without a rooted phone? Titantium backup apparently needs root. This stupid update is so annoying. I plan to root my phone in the future so I dont want the update but I dont have time to figure out how to root it right now.

No and if there were a way to do this non-rooted, that would be a very questionable security flaw.
Edit: Use Saferoot to gain root access on VRUCML1, when you find time. Links and info in our TW 4.3 Sticky.

Am I correct in assuming simply freezing SDM will stop OTA's? I thought there was one other thing that had to be frozen.

Freezing SDM was all I needed to do on my S3 to stop the update nags. Others have mentioned another file "FWUpdate", but I could not find it on my S3. I would just try freezing SDM 1.0 and see if that does it, if not, then look for the other file.

[Q] Weaksauce NOT working - Verizon 4.4.3 Update

It looks like my phone is unrooted after the 4.4.3 update. I tried to remove the weaksauce app, reinstall it along with SuperSU, rebooted but no luck. Any idea what to do now ?
I have weaksauce too so I can tether. I am scared to load the update in case I lose it.

Only thing you might be able to do is try the sunshine method. It's 25 bucks but it will let you know if it can work with your phone.

Never... I repeat never take an Ota if you plan on modding your phone. Because things like this can happen.
Yah, the changelog specifically says that it fixes the root exploit.

WeakSauce is fixed in 4.4.3, we have known this was coming for months now. It won't be updated for a number of reasons. You need to unlock/s-off before updating to 4.4.3 to get root on 4.4.3 for now.
Firewater - unlock/s-off - Free - http://firewater-soff.com/ (does not work on all m8s. Does not work on 4.4.3)
SunShine - unlock/s-off - $25 - http://theroot.ninja/ (Does not work on 4.4.3 for the time being, will update)

Try to find where it's been downloaded to. On Motorola it was in the cache/fota folder. Once you find it, just use a root file explorer to move it somewhere else.

Just got my Oneplus today. My experience through 4 updates is that SuperSU gets uninstalled, which unroots your phone. You just need to boot into TWRP and reflash SuperSU after the updates and you're rooted again.

As long as it installs the OTA I'm fine with reflashing SuperSU.
And judging from your reply TWRP also doesn't interfere with installing the OTA, great! :good:
Guess I'll be unlocking my bootloader (and having my phone wiped, damned) and rooting it.
Can't live without the Xposed Framework.
Thanks!

could of searched and found the answer... question has been asked quite a few times. also there is a setting in SuperSu to keep root in upgrades. Either way OTA or just wait for a rooted version which you probably would get faster than OTA in most cases

TWRP & Flashify work with this?
Sorry for my noobie question, but I rooted back in April with WeakSauce & TWRP and also installed Flashify. I am fuzzy on what I did and now, I am afraid of bricking my phone through ignorance.
Can I use these files to upgrade to 4.4.3 on my Verizon HTC One M8? If so, what is the most straightforward way to do this? Can I use Flashify or TWRP to load the OP6ZBIMG.ZIP file?
Thanks
I was able to get back to stock by following this guide I found here: http://www.bane-tech.com/how-to-return-htc-one-m8-verizon-to-stock-s-on-relock-bootloader-unrootuninstall-supersu/
Everything worked great until the final step of removing SuperSU. I was unable to remove SuperSU using all methods I could find. It remains as a system app, but I am no longer rooted.
My intentions were to return it to stock for the warranty screen replacement by HTC, so I took the risk and hid SuperSU in the app drawer and sent it in for the warranty work. It came back fixed and factory reset, but SuperSU was still there. I still wanted to return my phone to a complete stock experience in case I need to return it to Verizon, so I took a risk of taking the OTA released in September, thinking it would wipe SuperSU out of the system apps. Somehow, the OTA left SuperSU in tact. I also noticed that the stock camera app was limited to only camera or selfie mode. Video, Zoe and the others weren't able to be accessed. Has anyone else experienced these issues, or have any recommendations for fixing them? I am considering taking the HTC Eye OTA due soon from Verizon, hoping that will fix my problems, but I'm not too confident since the last OTA didn't work as expected.

That's because that is a crap guide. You turned s on before removing su which turned on /system write protection and basically write protected your su app.
You must remove su after locking bootloader and making sure all is well with lock and tamper status. You should only turn s on AFTER this is all verified.

I have uninstalled TWRP, Busy Box & SU. When I run the Check Root program it says I have ROOT.
I have twice accepted to OTA, it reboots, goes about 1/3rd through and goes to the red triangle thing which I then go into the recovery console.
On the bottom it says:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
"/system/customize/ACC/default.xml" has unexpected contents.
Write host_mode:0 done
At this point I reboot and I am back to where I was. Any pointers?

Su doesn't matter. You are going to need it to fix your problem. Did you make changes (like hotspot hack) to the default.xml file?
Actually. An easy way to fix it is to either flash a totally stock Rom or flash the official ruu i I have posted in the non dev section. It doesn't wipe and would put you back to 100% stock and let you take the ota

I'm on complete stock (not even rooted) and I've been having this problem for a while. I found out that sometimes when it happens, I can fix it by restarting my phone, but it goes back to being broken soon after. I noticed that it started to happen after I installed the Google now launcher, leading me to believe that it's a ram problem (and hence restarting will help) so I uninstalled a bunch of useless apps and now I use about 1g ram at idle, and the problem still persists.
This morning, I updated with the new OTA (4.4.4 and HTC Eye) and the problem is still here. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Verizon HTC One (M8) Lollipop root

Hey everyone ... I got the OTA update for my HTC One (M8) on verizon a few weeks ago and now I've gotten bored with it and wanna play around with some new roms. I've been trying to unlock the bootloader and root and every single solution requires it to be on android 4.4.4 or less. I can't figure this out and was wondering if anyone could help me out or let me know if there was a way to still do this. Thanks

You are stuck. No root/unlock for Verizon on the 5.0.1 update and no way to downgrade.
As of yet, at least.
I'm in the same boat. I really wish I would have unlocked when I had 4.4.x running. Now I'm stuck with 5.0.1 and stock bloatware until SunShine updates. argh.....

Just received an insurance replacement and goofed with an OTA 5.0.1. . Sunshine says I need to be rooted first. What do I do to root so I can s off. Thanks in advance for any input. I have been out of the loop for a bit and need to freshen up on this htc forum

sorry, but you are stuck until sunshine gets an update that includes VZW devices on Lollipop.
Does anyone have an ETA on the SunShine update?
Really. Don't ask for ETA's.

Whenever they find an exploit.
I'm just guessing here but I think they might be working hard on getting the M9 (verizon ) S-off and unlocked before doing anything with the M8 Lollipop .......just MHO
Started OTA and Stopped 1/2 Way
***UPDATE***
I answered my own question. I was just able to run Sunshine and it tested my phone. My gosh how relevied I was to see that it passed. Talk about dodging a bullet!

I, like the posts above, got a refurb M8. I did one update, but held off on the other.
I checked and I'm still running 4.4.4.
Do I have a chance of rooting/s-offing/unlocking?
Will sunshine work and what do I use to root? I used weaksauce before, but that isn't supposed to work now (from what I hear).
I'm glad I didn't to the last OTA update, but not sure where to start/turn now. Actually I only postponed it for 12 hours. It really wants me to update. {getting worried}
Thanks;
A (very very hopefull) Bug :fingers-crossed:
The hold up on both the m8 and m9 is a root exploit for android 5. The security in android 5 has taken a huge leap forward and closed all of the known root exploits. Until another is found, verizon devices are stuck unless you go the java card route. Just look browse the verizon note 4 forums, they don't have a root exploit either.

Better answer than the extremely rude one I received earlier. Even though I was in the wrong for asking for an ETA, there was a better way of telling me to not ask that.
