[Q] Do we need stickmount? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted N5 running LiquidSmooth (didnt flash any custom kernel separately. Installed stickmount as I read somewhere it is essential for OTG. I got an OTG pen drive and conencted it to my phone, and I think it will work just fine even without stickmount. I havent tried it yet as my N5 is only 4 days old and i do not want to try anything without being absolutely sure about it. Any inputs?

Depends if the ROM and kernel support automounting or not. If not, then yes you'll need stick mount.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

If I remember correctly, Liquid Smooth does not support OTG. I apologize if I'm wrong, but I had this problem with my Meenova.

I just use ES File Explorer. Currently on PA but i'm pretty sure it works on stock

USB OTG Doesn't automount on stock. ES would be needed, but only after mounting... which requires either kernel or ROM modification (which you will have) OR stickmount / Media Importer apps

My mistake, I do usually use Franco kernel

Kernel for Xoom with 3.2.2 and 4g sim installed.

I just got my xoom back after getting the 4G LTE sim installed and the 3.2.2 version of Honeycomb.
I have rooted it again and restored my apps and data, but am stuck on a lot of things work related since there is no kernel that provides tun.ko and keeps 4g working.
Is there a kernel being built that provides tun and 4g or maybe possibly a Moray type rom that has 4g support? (That would be super sweet).
Dude the only one was in the universal root thread. If you changed kernals I think your stuck till we can get the img.

I used the Universal Xoom Root process available in Development. It gave me back root access and superuser, but the kernel is still stock and lacking write access to the microsd card and tun.ko in the kernel so that IPSEC VPN connections work.
Was just searching around to see if a kernel with 4g support was in the works. Was going to use the Rogue kernel, but there is a post about waiting until it can be updated to handle 4g access.
I will just sit back and monitor the forum for an update.
The Tachi kernel is working for a few people so far. I don't live in a 4G area (VZW says it will be here next month), only work in one so I can't test the LTE yet, though the 3G works fine from my home.
I've identified a few minor annoyances and work arounds as compared to running the kernel (and Moray ROM) prior to 3.2.2 HLK75D as listed in this post:
PengLord said:
Interesting... I installed File Manager HD, enabled Root Explorer (in the settings menu) and it prompted for Root permissions. It works great. The next step in resolving this is going to be remounting the external1 device on boot to enable global write support. As I'm not so well versed in Android architecture to do that, I'll use MicroSD Mounter manually on boot.
The final step to getting this all sorted will be for me to figure out how to mount usbOTG devices, If anybody has experience with that on this kernel with a 4G Xoom, I'd very much appreciate it.
I figured out my problem with usbOTG support... I needed to added the "usbOTG" folder in the "mnt" directory using Root Explorer and then install a mount manager such as USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG

This will get you set up with R/W support for the external1 folder and usbOTG, VPN support may be in there as well since the kernel supports it, I however haven't tried it nor have I read about it being tested as functional on the HLK75D build.
Sadly solarnz announced he will not be working on a 4G Tiamat ROM due to life getting in the way, this means we will likely need to wait until another dev gets caught up or until ICS gets released to us by Motorola (fingers crossed for next month) before it gets any easier.

See the arcturus kernel thread over on xoomforums... there is now an open beta for a postupgrade kernel if you want to try it
Hi Etchg,
I had a similar issue. I sent my Xoom in for the 4g update. When it came back I rooted it. Trying to vpn into work (ipsec) I found that my new kernel 2.6.36.3-g6963abe has no tun.ko file. I found some instructions online and compiled one myself. Attached is my tun.ko (You will need to unzip and put in the systems/lib/modules directory. If your kernel is exactly the same as mine then it should work. BTW, with the new tun, I have successfully VPN'd into my work.

I just came back to this thread and saw the tun.zip you uploaded. I tried to open it, but it tells me it is corrupt.
Can you either upload it again or use dropbox and send me the link?
I was able to extract the module and load it on my Xoom. I have the same kernel, but I keep getting an authorization error when I try to connect. Darnit all to heck!
I fixed the authentication issue I was having. Thanks for the module...works like a charm.
Thanks for compiling the tun.ko. It works correctly with Cisco AnyConnect for Rooted Devices.
Glad to help
Hi Guys,
Been absent for the week. Glad to hear that you got it downloaded and working!
-Jared
This always comes back as corrupt for me. I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't extract the tun.ko out of the zip. I haven't been able to create my own either, so I'd really appreciate someone posting this.

[Q] Viper One S, Kernel Ville-Z, OTG

I have a question regarding the interaction of the Viper One S 1.2 Rom and the [kernel] [S4] [15 Nov] Ville-Z Sweep2wake | Mpdecision [Linaro-O3] [3.0.51].
I flashed the Kernel now in order to use the USB OTG function without external power supply. The USB stick is recognized as sda1.
Only when I want to run the script to mount the stick the following message is:
segmentation fault.
When I still had the Trickroid up and had to connect the USB flash drive with external power supply, it was mounted by the script.
I will not really change, because I have made friends already too much with the settings of the Viper Rom.
Can it be that the Viper Rom has some issues with USB OTG function? Maybe something is locked?
kind regards,

Not tried that kernel but to mount flash drive I use USB OTG Helper, give that a try.
Thank you for your suggestion but it didn't work. The app can't find my device....

I guess it dont really work with that kernel. I have no problems with it on AOSP roms.
Yes it seems to be very picky with the flash drive that use. I use the same as mentioned above the USB OTG helper. I find it works best if right when you plug it in the second you start seeing that light flash on the on the flashdrive start hitting the mount button over and over and over again and it should Mount eventually.
And then again there are some USB flash drives that I just cannot get to work at all.

Have you tried it on a AOSP rom to see if you get the same issue.
Very interesting.
I recently flashed the PAC man ROM, and have been enjoying it tremendously. I couldnt get USB mounts to work before on Viper, and i never bothered with a more complex external power source tether. Now with OTG Helper and PAC man (which is an AOSP ROM) as well as the latest Fusion Kernel for AOSP, it works with my external USB very easily. No issues.
It may be an AOSP ROM and/or Jellybean thing.

So is this work for ViperOneS rom? or I need an AOSP?

By the looks of things if its not powered its not going to work on Viper but works great on AOSP roms without power.

[Q] Questions about CROMi-Xenogenesis 4.6 First-time Install

Hi, I hope this post is in the right section (please move if not).
I have lots of experience rooting and installing custom ROMS on my Samsung i9000 phone, but this will be my first time installing a custom ROM on my TF700T. The tablet is unlocked and rooted and has the latest Android JB version and bootloader (4.2.1, 10.6.1.14.4). I also have TWRP 2.5 installed and working. However, I have a few questions before I start - sorry if these seem really noob.
1. My current SKU in Taiwanese (TW) - do I just use the WW edition without making any changes?
2. I've never used DATA2SD before - do I need to format the SD card and add the /Data/ directory manually, or does the CROMi installation do this for me?
3. The tablet is currently setup for two users (myself and my wife). Does CROMi-Xenogenesis 4.6 support mutli-user?
4. If I back up all the current settings using Titanium, do I need to do it in both profiles? Or should I simply do a simgle backup from root?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers, R

1. Yes just use the WW. It really dont make a difference but I wouldnt use the US rom unless you are in the US.
2. I have never used DATA2SD but by what I have read, you must use GParted to format the SDcard a certain way in order for the Mod in the CROMiX installer to see it. You MUST use GPARTED, you cannot use any other without risk of more problems.
3. Yes CROMiX supports multi-user. CROMiX is just the stock ROM, but de-bloated and extra tweaks.
4. Titanium will backup all apps. Though I do not use other users, I would think if you back it up from the Owner User, it would back up everything, but I do not know if the owner can access other users info though.

I can answer the 2nd question, You need to do all the partitioning and formatting on your PC (under Linux preferably) with GParted, CROMi does not do the preparation. As noted in the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962507.

No problem, as long as you have adequate command of the English language, which you do seem to have.

Just make the two partitions, and follow the prcedures to the letter. Your ROM will do the rest.

I haven't tested this, but since it is based on Android 4.2 it should work (it provides exactly the same functionality as the stock ROM, so if stock does it, CROMI(-X) does it, too).

Wow. Thanks very much for the very quick replies. I'll use your info and get installing today.
Thanks again!
You may find this useful. It discusses backing up multiple user accounts in 4.2 with superuser (assuming ChainsDD but could be CWM) and TB. How this works with other superuser apps (superSU, superuser X) is TBD. Here is the key finding:

Non-Primary Users CAN get root access. I used superusers multi-user Mode (owner controlled) and TiBa gets root access on my secondary users. Without superusers multi-user feature TiBa doesn't get root rights...i tried it...

I was also wondering about DATA2SD. OP did you format your SD card and get it to work? When you install ChromiX it asks you if you want to install Data2SD. Will that option not work if you dont have your external SD card formatted correctly?

Yes, you have to correctly format and partition your external SD with Gparted for Data2SD to work.
Read the forums before you do this. Data2SD can be a mine field and does not give you the performance boost it once did IMHO.

For the love of God use GPARTED to partition it seems a long effort to go but using any other will and has done to me broke my micro SD.

Hi, sorry for the late reply... I haven't been checking back on this post. To answer your question... in the end I chose not to install DATA2SD option. I did successfully install CROMi-X 4.6.1 and everything is working really well - browsing with Chrome is amazingly fast compared to stock!!!
The only problem I've found so far is with some of my Play Store Apps not being able to load - there were a couple of apps that installed just fine on Stock Asus JB (latest version 4.2.1) but under CROMi-X they say they are incompatible with my device. I guess it probably has something to do with the DPI being used (I used the 213 DPI which was default selection during the CROMi-X installation). Might check this out in the developer thread.
Cheers, R
I've updated the boot loader in the first post of the CROMi-X thread to include the latest TW boot loader now.
Also it seems the multi-dpi version of the play store I am using has some issues showing all compatible apps. I have an alternative version to test which will hopefully resolve this and then I can release a patch.

A Few final queries

I am sure these have been answered at different places on the forums but please clarify on these points...
1. OTG support ..Those with Kikats can access otg fully (read/ write/ read again without reboots) and if yes Does it needs root access or unlocked bootloader?
2. Free space...I gather I will have 12 gb free space on the device ...Can I install apps on all 12gb or is the app install memory is limited by partition?
3. Screen Cast/ mirroring...Does the kitkat enables it by default?
P.S I would prefer not to root/unlock BL the device for atleast a month Just to make sure everything is working finee...
1. I have not tried it but what i read is that on Kit Kat you need a third-Party-app. On 4.3 it was working, so i had read.
2. The 8 GB version has approximately 5.5 GB free
3. There is (4.4.2) a cast screen option in settings. It said no nearby devices when i clocked it once. Never used it . Seems like it is enabled.

Not stupid people, just people with a different firmware on the phone. There is definitely no native USB OTG support on current UK 4.4.2 stock firmwares (or a Stock File Explorer for that matter). So it looks like Motorola enabled it for the later release in Asia - lucky folk. Hopefully they will see fit to push an OTA to other variants to enable the feature.
In the meantime for a cost Nexus Media Importer works fine for non-rooted devices without native support (read / write)
Cast Screen option Pointless!!!!
Did anyone realise?!
There was supposed to be a menu option in the Cast Screen Settings
its through the menu that allows You to cast the screen to wirelessly stream video and audio
This " Cast Screen" option has no point at all on the Moto G, it does not make any sense???

Default USBOTG Mounter in Nexus 5

Hi
I have A Nexus 5 with android 4.4.4.
Today When I Have Connected My MP3 Player To My Phone,Es Explorer App Asked Me To Mount It(And It Couldn't!)
Now When I'm Connecting A USB Flash to My Phone,I Can't Mount It By Phone Os(No USB Showing In Settings>Storage).
Mounting By Es Or Stickmount works but i can't mount usb without them.
i think The Problem Is "The Default USB Mounter Changed" But I Don't know How to fix it.
Do You Know How To fix It?
The Nexus 5 with Stock ROM and kernel cannot automatically mount OTG. You must use either StickMount or Nexus media importer apps.
If you have a ROM and/or kernel that does support automount, well you haven't told us which this is.
