Block OTA Updates - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I am S-off and rooted on Verizon. What file or files do I have to freeze via TBU to not get the soon to be released update ?
Thanks in advance

A custom recovery like CWM or TWRP should also cause the update to fail.

Okay thanks for the quick responses

Figured I'd add on to these answers.
Modifying anything will pretty much mess up the OTA's. As far as I know if everything is not 100% stock (besides S-OFF & bootloader unlock) then the update will fail.
Root your phone = failed update
Custom recovery = failed update
Edit a file in /system (add a line or remove a line or change 0 to 1 in something) = failed update
Etc

Can't you just freeze the Updater 6. whatever with titanium?

Yes, that will prevent a nag, but it would still allow you to manually update it in settings.
I'd follow what Andy said, then it's for sure unable to update

This is mostly true, but sometimes the overall update will fail but bits and pieces of it will actually pass. This is exactly what you don't want.
For example, a new bootloader would pass, but the system and the recovery push would fail. This could potentially lock your bootloader. It's still better to stop the update without giving it a chance to install, despite having root and a custom recovery.

It will cause it not to install, but won't stop the nag to install the OTA.

Can't you stop it by going into About/software update and unchecking auto download?

Thanks I wasn't sure. This is my first HTC (former Motorola fan). Even once the developers get ahold of the update and create a flashable zip for us do we still need to put the stock recovery back or flash the update.zip in custom recovery? I'm S-Off, BL unlocked and rooted with TWRP.

Once I saw this I was curious about that option. But every time I go into About/Software Update, settings crashes. Maybe due to Sense 6 Toolbox in my settings menu?

I'm not 100% sure... I am actually curious about all this too... This phone is the first and only phone I've ever unlocked/rooted/ S-off etc.... I'm currently running Venom Viper ONE ROM on Here and have neglected to flash the most current version bc it's based on 4.3
I'm still waiting to see how it all pans out... And clueless as to how to update kitkat once it does come through... Whether I can do it manually... Or if I have to go back to stock sense 6 so on and so forth... Guess we shall see

You can do it manually through fastboot, all you're going to want to update is the firmware.

It's not going to update the rom, but it'll update your baseband and other firmware, you can package it in a flashable zip and flash it in a custom recovery or with the fastboot flash command.

Will renaming the files with ES File Explorer work instead of TBU. I had to schedule the update for later this evening, hoping that I can rename with ES and be done with it.

I had the G3 for a couple weeks...it was ok I guess, but I already have a tablet. Ha, needed to be able to hold my phone with one hand. G3 is overrated!
I'm about to root and I'll be sure to try out any ROMs you have made for the M8!!

I was rooted with weaksauce and it pestered me with the update relentlessly. Every time I turned on the phone I had to click a bunch of junk to get rid of it. Unfortunately I did not realize this was a full OS update, it just mentioned updating to the fancy charging thing and clicked "yes" to be rid of the annoyance. As soon as I clicked it my phone rebooted and I knew I was in trouble. Lost root and can't get it back without paying for sunshine. I'm poor!

Yes, but they will remove your custom recovery and might even lock your bootloader (there are bootloader.blob files, but I don't know what they do).

Yes. This is also important for other users reading this thread: These ROMs are probably beta's, so if you flash this on your tablet you won't get new OTA's. I'm not 100% certain about this, but just in case: Make a backup!!!
OK so its not like Samsung where I can install the firmware and go back.
Btw when I do power and volume I get android guy with red error why is this. I have not rooted nor tried to install kernel/rom before
I was under the hope an official firmware wouldn't void warranty but it looks like it won't do updates without cwm which I'm not comfortable installing at this time

That's because the Acer recovery does not have a menu or other interface. If you boot into stock recovery, you'll get the 'error android'. If you boot to recovery with a file called 'update.zip' on your SD-card, the stock recovery will flash this update.zip without error.
However, you can only flash official update.zip files with this, no custom ROMs.

Oh OK thanks.
Yeah I tried installing that one from SD card it failed at 50%
regarding the update script,
to get these roms to work, the region check needs to be bypassed (after installing a custom rom), can i just comment out the line in question?
assert(getprop("ro.product.name") == "a510_pa_ca");
and to keep cwm recovery, can i just comment out the recovery package extraction?
package_extract_dir("recovery", "/system");
do i need to comment out the bootloader.blob file? some of what i read seems to indicate if i dont comment it out, the bootloader will be locked after flashing.
then rezip, make sure cwm is set to take an unsigned zip, and flash?
for those trying to select the right rom and dont want to download all 8, the correspond regions are as follows (the RV28RCXX begin an excerpt from the file name on the acer site):
Acer_AV041_A510_1.072.00_EMEA_CUS1 --> RV28RC02
Acer_AV041_A510_1.073.00_WW_GEN1 --> RV28RC01
Acer_AV041_A510_1.074.00_EMEA_GB --> RV28RC03
Acer_AV041_A510_1.076.00_EMEA_DE --> RV28RC04
Acer_AV041_A510_1.076.00_PA_CUS1 --> RV28RC04
Acer_AV041_A510_1.079.00_PA_CA --> RV28RC06
Acer_AV041_A510_1.084.00_AAP_AU --> RV28RC08
Acer_AV041_A510_1.090.00_TWN_GEN1 --> RV28RC10
they all have region checks, so if you have installed a custom rom, the acer roms will fail to flash without some additional tweaking. And two regions (RC04) do have the exact same file name, no idea why acer did that.
And for A511 ?
OK so I retried flashing after saving data and it worked this time last time I tried it kept failing at 50%.
No noticeable difference and the stock browser still crashes on me.
Oh well just have to wait for jelly bean update maybe for some noticeable fixes.
Acer_AV041_A510_1.084.00_AAP_AU --> RV28RC08
For any Aussies reading here I have tested a full deplete and had no major issues except the ones I was already getting I.e stock browser crash and occasionally can't wake up the device.
Though this hasn't happened yet I'm assuming it still is there.

It uses a libssl.so from a LG Optimus L5 II (4.1.2) and it works on my TrekStor Surftab Ventos 10.1
If your device does't boot after you've installed it:
The patch creates a backup of your libssl.so at /system/libssl.backup.so, so just replace /system/lib/libssl.so with that backup file

I'm s off, have twrp installed and on stock ROM. Would like to install this update, or get a 4.2.2 or 4.3 stable fully functional ROM. Do you think flashing stock recovery and then ota would work even if I'm s off. Should still be able to boot an ruu from fastboot even if I boot loop. Suggestions on custom roms?
Edit: Used flashalot's recovery switcher to flash stock recovery, rebooted, then flashed the ota update. After update I lost root, but still have s off.
Plan on fastboot flashing another recovery, then flashing su binary again from the new recovery.
Hope this helps.

This might help...
If you have the OTA.zip file... but custom recovery and such like TMUS application removed..
This will wipe your phone. Making a backup is not optional !!!
http://sadevil.org/blog/2012/12/23/manually-flashing-an-ota-update/
This looks somewhat straight forward.. If you want to get the OTA downloaded:
got to settings .. and manage to get the software update.. It will download eventually into your Download folder ..
Do not Apply the OTA at this point.. select install later!!!
pull the file on your PC/Mac/Linux box and modify as described in the URL above..
reboot your phone and the OTA should not bother you ... if you have pulled (like in remove) or at least renamed the OTA file..
Before you push Firmware.. and such make sure you have made a backup with CWM !!! or whatever method you are using!!!
also make sure you have your custom recovery image somewhere available and maybe a su.zip cwm file as you may loose root as well.. not sure..
If you have rooted your HTC one S your self - this should not be hard to DIY..
Currently I am at work and cannot try it out myself .. but definitly will do it once back at home later..
Godspeed to all of you brave hackers..

@banderz777 and @biga1, If you are S-Off you do not need to relock the bootloader. If you are S-On then you must relock the bootloader. You will need to flash your stock recovery to proceed with the OTA, then after it finishes you may flash back your TWRP recovery.

@ biga1 are you S-OFF or S-ON ?, or just try locking your bootloader and see, you do still have the unlock bin from HTC.
@Modding.MyMind I am S-OFF. I do NOT have my unlock bin from HTC anymore :crying:
The OTA is applying a lot of patches to your system directory. It is always recommended that you have all apps whether bloatware or not which originally came on the device to insure the OTA doesn't abort. If what the OTA is updating isn't found on your phone then it will terminate. You can get another unlock_code.bin by simply redoing the steps again over at htcdev.

I haven't accepted the update yet. Been reviewing the patches before I accept it. Also weary about the hboot image inside the firmware.zip that comes with the OTA. Not sure what affects it may have so I am snooping around a bit.
Ok. I feel better. You have been my barometer for this device. Thanks for all your support for the boost users.

Has anyone flashed the latest ota with success? And if so are there any notable improvements? Thanks

I haven't yet simply because my core.odex file is modified which will cause it to abort. But, I have mainly seen complaints about the OTA and nothing otherwise.
I've updated....nothing special.....no complaints about it here......but nothing new either

OTA for 4.4.4

nice time for androidfilehost to be unreachable... i did post the firmware up. RUU and OTApkg.zip are ready for upload.
FYI guys/gals.. there's a new hboot on this one too.
Edit..uploading now
I am unlocked and rooted but the download from verizon automatically started. It did nothing after it was done downloading. I dont know what to expect of this?? I am on viper rom 2.5.
Here's the link folks

You can just use the 4.4.3 ruu and do the OTA, then your firmware is done all in 1 shot
can someone upload a 4.4.4 system dump? or point me to one if someone has already? thanks!
I have looked around and found all kinds of different answers so can someone here help me out a bit?
I got the phone when it first came out, have S-OFF, root, TWRP custom recovery but have version 4.4.2 still installed with everything being left pretty much stock. I would prefer to keep things pretty much stock so what would I need to do to update to 4.4.4? Do I need to get 4.4.3 first? Do I need to flash stock recovery first before doing anything? Anything with firmware or radios?

well, this is my idea for you
1. Flash the stock 4.4.2 recovery over the TWRP, then just do the OTA's

Reasonable enough, sorry if this is another dumb question but I havent been paying much attention to these boards since I rooted, I see that recent phones require Sunshine to root, is that because of the firewater method being patched via a software update (4.4.3?) or some other manufacturer change that I shouldnt be concerned with if the old root method already works for me?

I already updated... I was just saying for safe keeping just in case I get in some unforseen trouble.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159 and just flash the 4.4.3 with not boot img. YOu dont need to flash the recovery to accept ota's. YOu can just flash this and you will get the updated radios and h boot.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159
Downloaded OTA and updated, they added file manager and flashlight back ~!

nope, if your already SOFF, you will stay SOFF. might break your root, but all you need to do is reinstall supersu when you put twrp back on

The security patch included is (most likely) the July one, since Samsung also just released a new software update to international models which includes the July security patch and Verizon has been updating the "Galaxy S" series phones with the July update over the past few weeks.

Updato is one way; this shows the list for the Verizon S5 with the most recent at the top; they haven't gotten the new update up yet though.
I think that another way would be for someone to dig through the update.zip file which would be on the phone of someone who got the OTA update downloaded but had not yet installed it yet.
To confirm, the only thing that's different between the dev-friendly version (when it comes out) and the stock is the missing aboot? Thanks again.

Is this flashable with Odin only or possibly need to already be on a specific kernal? I have tried on two S5900V's through TWRP and both result in a failure message. Both are on jkruse de-bloated MM rom at the moment.

Since no one wanted to chime in and help me out in my post, you need to unzip the file and load the md5 into Odin's AP slot and flash it. Then let the phone do its thing and flash the latest TWRP with odin after. Then go back into TWRP and flash supersu to gain root again. Trying to flash right within TWRP is not an option, not sure why its not explained.
So this update wont "factory reset" my device?

Did you loose root?
I dirty flashed and lost root, was unable to get it back.
Reloaded TWRP via Odin and then flashed SuperSU, nothing. Wiped and restore backup all good. ..

I always flash super su and whatever else I need in recovery after I've flashed the rom so I cant give you a definitive answer. Both phones did upgrade without data loss and now advanced calling/wifi calling actually work now which is why I flashed in the first place.
Working?
Is this working? Ive tried everything and i have the Toshiba chip. Emmc 11. It soft bricks if i try to downgraded to stock builds.

If you flash the dev boot loader friendly version it wont screw with your bootloader whatsoever. Before you restart go back in TWRP and flash supersu to get root again. Saying it "unlocked boot loader" may cause confusion to people because it does not, you need to manually go from locked to DEV status via a few of the methods posted in here.
