Disable Nexus 5 front camera - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I am wondering if there is a possibility to disable the front camera of my nexus 5 for privacy reasons. I don't need it anyway.
Of course, I could glue something onto it, but that just looks stupid and I think there must be a way to disable the camera for the system, which can be fixed if I need to. I guess the best way would be to remove the drivers for it, but I don't know which one it is.
Does anyone has any idea how to achieve this? Deleting the camera.apk would not work because I still want to be able to use the camera at the back.
Thank you already and cheers.

Just use a black marker pen and put a dot.. If you ever want to use the camera, use alcohol to wipe it off.

Privacy? You believe someone could hack your phone and watch you?
Yeah.... Not going to happen. Relax. ?

Who knows.. may be the govt was spying on us the whole time and this camera-daemon bug was a cover up? :silly::angel:

Broking the camera...

Hello all,
Some some weird reason (you don't want to know why ) I need to shut down the front camera of my phone.
It's just the front camera and it only needs to be at the camera app, but if it lets working everywhere there's no problem.
I just want to know if there is some file that I can delete or apk to be edited so the camera stops working.
The only way I can recall now is using bruce's CM10 earlier builds when the front camera wasn't working, but that way I'll loose other things.
Hope someone can help me.
Thank you!!
With the best regards,
Mama_mia
Bumping...
Can anyone point me to the camera module so I can delete it and the camera stops working....
It may look weird, but the thing is that I can loose a free second hand Sensation if I cannot disable its camera.
A guy told me that he would give me his phone because the front camera was broken, but the ruu solved it.
Tomorrow I will be with him, and I don't want him to see that the camera works, or he may want the phone to him.
So I thought if I disable the front camera on camera app, won't want his phone back...
Thank you
Ok, I'll be the one. This is just weird....

OK...... if you only need to confuse him for a day then just flash the old Bruce roms and then simply don't tell him??? Even if you could mangle the kernel module it would be fixed with every new rom And update you use..... but agreed this is a very weird idea
Tapped out from my sexy nexus 7
Yes, I agree with you, it's weird, but it's the only way to win a free Sensation...
I thought about using Bruce's old builds, but the problem is that I don't know when I will need the camera not working, it may be today, tomorrow, I don't know. And I would like to use the phone without the bugs from old builds, like wakelocks and so on...
It's not a problem if I need to remove modules every time I update rom, I just need to know where they are...
How about just a super tiny piece of black tape and stick it on the sensor. Really tiny, cut to precision, and could be applied with case off?
So when he flips to the front camera it will just be a black picture?

It worked, but I did not needed to show him that it doesn't work, he assumed that.
Looks like the guy didn't bother to buy a new phone(Galaxy S3, buah...I dont like Samsung).

Just got a N5, camera disappointing

Hey All,
Just got a N5 and I'm a bit disappointed with the camera. Seems like this issue isn't new, but the camera has a really tough time autofocusing and even tap to focus.
I saw that there was a fix for older versions, but is there any update in 4.4.4?
Just as a curious note: most of the custom roms have this problem or not?
Thank you,
-Siroes
If you are disappointed with Nexus 5's camera performance, you should consider selling it away and get a phone with a better camera..
Agreed. If after 4.4.2 you think the camera is disappointing you must be a professional photographer. I'd highly recommend a Nokia WP as a phone camera or a quality camera.
Using Google Camera on 4.4.4 has a pretty decent shutter speed and also using different dalvik patches can increase the speed.
The camera works amazing when it does focus, but it takes quite a while sometimes. I never used 4.4.2, so I can't speak of that experience...
Just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues.

Thanks, I really appreciate it.
I personally came from S4 than sold it to buy Nexus 5. Than I picked up note 3 but with bootloader being locked I said F U at&t and just purchased yet again another Nexus 5. Already rooted running Android L preview . I can care less about the camera like the other guys on here said I'm no professional photographer lol.

install google camera from playstore. better focus
Is this with or without HDR+? Without HDR on, I find 4.4.4 with the Google Camera will focus pretty quickly. With HDR on, it's obviously going to take a fair bit longer to take a snap.
Either you're doing it wrong or you're a professional photographer.
If you're the latter then I don't know what you're trying to do with a phone camera lol.
Camera works fine for me, better than the Note 3.

I'm in no way a professional photographer. If I want to take a quick shot, it usually ends up taking a minute or longer due to the focus

honestly, i have that and it makes very little difference. The camera quality is only good when using HDR mode which in some roms doesnt even work properly. If you are a photo takin/lovin person, this camera will be a disappointment.
A minute to focus? 60 full seconds?? I'm doubting that.
Anyway....camera phones are very cheap cameras....no phone will compare to even my 99 dollar Kodak camera.
I see comparisons with guys comparing this phone to that phone and they are all inferior to the cheapest of dedicated cameras.
If people are that concerned with getting consistently decent pics....carry a camera with you. They can be quite small and light, and will put all phone cameras to shame.
Just my 2 cents. ?
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ----------
And.....if you rely on your phone camera to take your pics at a special event that you want good pics to capture the memories..... Its just silly to show up with nothing but your phone.
If it truly takes 60 seconds to focus I think you might have a problem with your hardware. Otherwise you should check out this thread if you haven't already http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...tos-post-pictures-videos-share-4-4-1-t2477920
Shouldn't take more than a couple seconds to focus unless you're moving the phone a lot. Perhaps your hand is too shakey? OIS helps but won't fix shakey hand completely.
At the worst it should take about 2-3 seconds to focus. Manage to get consistently clear pictures. If you update past 4.4.2 and still experience an issue, you've got a problem.

Thanks for that information. I ended up contacting Google Play and sent a replacement. Now it works just great, just as everyone has described.
I guess something was wrong with the hardware.

Z3 underwater filming.

Has anyone had any experience at filming stills or video, underwater with any of the z series xperia phones.
When I tried filming underwater with my z3, the touch screen didn't seem to like the water and kept exiting the camera app.
Is there a way of locking the screen or a setting I've missed to stop the screen being activated by the water?
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
There is a small app called touch block that stops the water activating the touch screen.
Ah OK thanks for that pal.
Sorry if I'm being stupid but I only seem to be able to turn the touch block on before taking a video or pic. So while it's activated I can't take a pic or video. Do I use the camera button on the side of the phone.?

Yes. Use that button on side.

Check the settings of the camera app - there is an option to lock the touchscreen.
A very complicated way to use things. It's sad that in the process of making such an incredible phone they have missed out serious user elements. But then again, thats why they allow rooting.

It's a waterproof phone but it's not an underwater phone in the first place. Yeah, the process is cumbersome but at least it's there. I don't think this is meant to be used on a daily basis.

Jesus some people will complain about anything!
The touchscreen doesn't work underwater so they created a touch-lock feature and provided a hardware shutter button. How are you still moaning? How often are you taking underwater photos and videos for this to be genuinely 'cumbersome'?
In any case a physical camera button is much better for taking photos generally anyway
It's a great feature but not sure I'll ever use it under water...
The only water I go in is my bath, and other then take photos of my sausage, I couldn't think of nothing else to photograph! :good:

my front camera is taking blurry pictures this is happening from few weeks i considered taking it to service center but maybe you people can help
blurry pictures as in if i take a selfie, the face appears washed out or very cartoonish type if i zoom in it gets distorted and its lacking details its not taking as sharp pictures as it use to take before although rear camera is working fine... please help
I have a similar problem with my front camera. Pictures taken are really ugly, the look like they have a beauty effect on it, or some blur. I thought this is normal...

So you say your friends phone does not have this beauty effect??? maybe it is firmware related. I am on 5.0.2. This sounds like a software issue...
I don't use the front camera anymore because the result is terrible.
Are there any others with good pictures made with front camera?

I'm also experiencing the same problem.
Any help?

What are you looking forward to..

On the 6.0 update?
For me...
1. Faster fingerprint reader/unlock animation
2. New keyboard layout
3. Finally having an option to switch to pin code for alternative option if fingerprint isnt working
4. Adjustments on touchwiz
5. Google now on tap
6. New emojis
7.Faster phone ?? (hopefully)
Is speed an issue? My Note5 is smooth and quick. *shrug* Now on Tap is actually pretty cool. I don't use a protective lock screen so I don't know about that. I'd like to be able to activate Samsung Pay with a swipe up from the S-View window, but that won't happen.

Speed is definitely not an issue lol, but there are somethings that need a speed improvement.. such as the fingerprint reader. I just hope i dont see any lag. Im assuming you use Find my mobile? if you dont use a protective lock screen. And i dont use samsung pay or NFC payment for that matter, but i understand your struggle haha.
I could root my device, but i choose not to. Reason being is it will possibly lose value once Knox has been tripped.

I do use Find my Mobile but I also use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rickclephas.fingersecurity to lock certain apps. It only locks those apps when I am not connected to my WiFi or my cars Bluetooth. Maybe with the new fingerprint API I'll lock the whole phone up.
I also noticed when watching marshmallow beta for s6/s6 edge is that the capacitive buttons dont light up when touching the screen... which is a smart move from samsung. It saves battery and it makes sense. It only lights up when pressing them or when pressing the home button.

Actually it makes no sense, whatsoever. The entire point of the capacitive buttons lighting up when you touch the screen is so you can see them in the dark in order to press them.. lighting up when you touch them makes zero sense, why would I need them to do THAT?

They didn't light up because it was a Beta and the rooted kernel broke it even more on some devices, but made them work better on other devices. There's also mods you can use to just turn them off if you don't like them. Xposed. Or just go into the settings!!!
Also, just because you don't like them being on, doesn't mean that they are pointless. Tests have also been done to see just how much battery life is affected by Capacitive buttons and you can't even tell how much they use.
By the way, a lot of people like myself, work in dark places and have to use our phones. Think about that for a minute.:good:
The only thing I'm looking forward to is a phone that doesn't get an update and have it cause the phone to be worse than before. Right now my stock Note 5 works just fine.
