Straight Talk Information! (If Anyone Cares) - General Topics

I did a search and couldn't find anything related to this, so I thought I'd post it.
Straight Talk allows Verizon 4G phones on their network!!!
To be specific, I checked a few ESNs with their system as well as chatted with a person on this, and you can in fact bring over a Verizon 4G phone and use it with Straight Talk. This is CDMA ONLY, and you will be limited to 3G speeds.
I will be verifying this in the next few days when my new (used) phone gets here. If it doesn't work, I will be sure to let everyone know/delete this thread.
I was quite pleased to hear this because I was tired of having to look for 3G phones that are all outdated, and ST's smartphones can be expensive. I was able to pick up a near-mint LG G2 for less than ST's GS3. But, we'll see if it works!

CDMA leftover problems

Please delete this thread, I was incorrect. Straight Talk WILL NOT activate 4G LTE phones on a CDMA only network. I was misinformed.
Sorry everyone.

just got gx2 having some issues

I just got the phone today me and fiance both got same phone we were told our area had 3g coverage i contacted tmobile support and the tech stated it is not availabe he actually suggested we seek another carrier anyone have any suggestions to getting better quality signal and data...
Since you bought it from Tmob you should ask and get the unlock codes for free and also should be opt out of the early contract termination fee as well because it was not your fault about the coverage area. Don't let them push you around. Stick to your guns that the tmob rep said you would have 3G and yet you do not.
Check with ATT and see if they have better coverage in your area. The G2X can work on ATT networks as well but you would have to do some research on the settings and etc.
Thats my two cents if your gonna leave Tmob and keep the phones.
As for getting better reception or data signal theres pretty much nothing you can do to make it better if the towers aren't there.

Agree with all that, maybe you can get the phone as a Standard rate plan, which they don't offer with smart phones. You can then use it wifi all over the place. And when the merger hits, you might get better reception if they can share antenna....though some say the G2x will not work on any 3G ATT signals.
thanks for the responses
Yea ive been searching around seeing if there was a fix or noticable difference in rooted pre gb releases for better sig/data strength and such i even caled tmo when i got home and spoke with tech rep and he suggested that i just return devices and go to a diff network I felt that was a horrible way to represent the company. Didnt even try or make a feeble attempt to troubleshoot just blew it off to ah well you dont get 3g in your area so to bad basically.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the G2X only works on the 1700mhz 3G band. ATT does not use this band so he would be stuck on 2g, which is exactly the problem he's having with tmobs now.
well i should have gone further in to detail
The issue is in the store i was told that i would be in a 3g area once i got home i was only staring at the letter G on the highway i had 2G but at home now even outside I am at G and tech on the phone said i was in 2g area then proceeded to tell me i should look in to another company problem is ive tried verizon which is incredible service horrible support and sprint which had great customer service but horrid service I can travel to mount vernon and data roam.

Hmmm you might be right and i have to retract my statement cuz now ever since the phone was released it showed that it was quad band and had both bands for tmob and ATT for 2g/3g/4g bands and now LG says its not.
Even Tmobs site showed it had that capability. I'm reading into it now. Thanks for the refresh course.
No one suggested WiFi Calling? I use it at work and its awesome. Really cuts down on battery usage too. Plus WiFi Calling is now FREE on Tmobile so why WOULDN'T you want to use it at home or at work?
Beats paying AT&T for a $100 WiFi Extender and having it come out of your bank of minutes.
Plus WiFi Calling works over standard WiFi, so even at McDonalds it will work.
Of course this is under the assumption that there IS some coverage around your home. If there was NO service then I would probably just look elsewhere. If you can at least make calls in your neighborhood and calls, text, and surf the web at home (using WiFi Calling and WiFi) then that isn't so bad. Text messages work on any network grade. The only issue you'd have with a slower network is data. But if there is decent service "around" your house, then WiFi calling works wonders to make sure you are online around your home.
It would actually be kinda cool to reply on a WiFi router for service because at 10pm I could just pull the plug and cells go off. No kids texting at 2am.

No one really knows but Tmobile is releasing lots of "Quad-band" phones in the event the AT&T merger goes through. They've even stated they ONCE the merger goes through, they will unlock the other frequencies.
So while there is no absolute answer whether our phones are truely quad-band until we crack it open and actually test, it would be odd that it passed FCC, had it listed on the website, and touted as one of the biggest features... only to NOT have no such hardware.
Makes more sense that Tmobile just "locked it up" for now.

There really isn't much the csr over the phone can do. If you don't have service the person on the phone can't magically teleport a tower into your hood.
They offered you the chance to return the phone and get your money back. How else would you like them to proceed when they can't provide you with service?
Thanks all for the responses
Yea thats what ive been doing just got it set up to wifi in the house honestly out and about not that big an issue as i already have everything i need on the phone at that point unless its a game using data based connectivity which i can deal the phone in itself is just to nice for me to let go of and as for the last post honestly youve waited your breathe and I dont appreciate the rudeness really there is no magic tmo fairy to pop out of my ass and stick a new tower in my back yard gosh there goes that idea. but yea def love the phone testing out root lol i couldnt wait day 1 rooted and working on a good rom/kernel combo in the near future you can look forward to me buildling from aosp soon as this has been something i have been nearing for quite a while now just couldnt find a decent enough phone to dev on so be on the look out for the Triumph Rom coming soon to your neck of the woods.
I was rude? I thought I was just being logical and asked what you would have done if you were the csr.
I'm glad you are at least trying the phone out via wifi, 99% of the people here would have ditched it.
well if i mistook you i apologize
But i def would not recommend someone leave my business for another without prior checking thoroughly to see what other options there may be this guy spent 5 minutes on the phone with me he was in tech support and did no do any literally anything to troubleshoot why i was listed in a 2g area but only getting 1g was my big issue but honestly ill take this over sprint any day i cannot leave the house 5 minutes in any direction without data roaming so just pushed over dark and sin with faux kernel going to set it up and test drive I will be working up some gb roms once official release is out which from the reads i have found is only sometime soon. heres to hoping.

Does Straight talk BYOD plan use Tmobile network or ATT or both?

Hi!
I'm considering to switch to straight talk since my vm triumph has been giving me alot of problems, so I wanted to ask which network does straight talk run on? I have always been a fan of tmobile android phones and can get them for cheap prices aswell, but if I buy a tmobile android phone, does it mean that i wont be able to use 3g? also tmobile service is pretty sketchy in my area, thats why i didnt get simple mobile.
And do the phones from att or tmobile have to be unlocked to be used with ST?
Thanks !

To hell with it, this is very good news for us.
One, not development. Two, I believe that's what the SIM card in our phones is for
I had thoughts it might, once I started tearing through the framework there are hints of HSPA+ all over the place.
Couldn't figure out why they would be there unless our phone supported it. Good to see it does!

The SIM card is primarily for LTE, it's kind of surprising that they actually bothered to put in the HSPA+ to be honest since it's not primarily intended to be used on GSM. I would have thought that they would have skimped on the GSM radios since not many people will use them but I guess because of the way the MSM8960 SoC works it was easy to build in all the antennas needed to support it. Pretty exciting to see that our phone supports practically every cell phone standard then.
Also, it's kind of awkward the way they split up the forums but I guess since there is no Verizon SGS3 general maybe he thought it could fit here. Also he was posting in the other thread about GSM usage in this board which also contains no development so I guess he thought it was okay.
I thought Verizon was releasing an update later on that was supposed to make the S3 a "global" device. Is your phone using the newer baseband/modems? I know a lot of people have been wonder what the update included in that regards (most knew that it contained the crippled search). I wonder if this is the update Verizon mentioned when the phone was announced.
Speaking with our business's Verizon rep about 6 months ago he said that Verizon's plan was to use dual HSPA and LTE in the phones. One service would be strictly for voice, while the other for data. This of course would allow them to do surf while talk.

I would recommend a new Verizon rep. Eventually voice will be over LTE but currently is not. Verizon has no HSPA+ so his logic is flawed. Also, all Verizon LTE phones support talk and surf while on LTE and some support on 3G like the thunderbolt.
LOL ! I don't understand why people seem to take what reps say as fact.

Our galaxy s3 also support same time voice/data on 3g.
GSM as a standard supports voice/data simultaneously unless only the legacy GSM (not even EDGE) signal is available. As long as more than one protocol is accessible, you can do voice & data.

No, probably not without some kind of hack.
Verizon's "global" phones have always been locked at the modem-level to refuse connections with AT&T and T-Mobile's US bands, to prevent this.
TeamBlackHat came up with a hack for my old phone, the Droid 2 Global, that did allow it to connect to AT&T/T-Mobile in the US, though- but Verizon will never allow this.
Edit: I am curious about the other thread going where someone got it to connect to AT&T's towers (only voice) though.
This is interesting.
I thought we'd only get EDGE data abroad.

I wanna say that you cant browse and talk while on 3g but it works fine while on 4g. So if anything I think that commercial was more so directed towards the Verizon model of the iphone and the iphone commercial you were seeing was from AT&T. This is my guess anyways.

Dropped Calls!

I may be a minority when it comes to this, but I run my phone unlocked on AT&T. Recently (over the past 6 months or so) I've been experiencing dropped calls a lot where they never used to be a problem. Now, I'm getting dropped calls in my own home as well.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-Starts-Pushing-Users-Off-Their-2G-EDGE-Network-118679
My mother recently got a letter from AT&T saying that they would replace her old LG CG180 for a 3G phone. They replaced it for free.
It's no news to me that the 4G Slide will only run on edge through AT&T, but I was just wondering if that would be the actual reason as to why my service has been so terrible lately. I know AT&T has a bad reputation, but it has worked flawlessly for me thus far. I actually switched from T-Mobile to AT&T about 4 years ago, because there was no service where I went to school.
I also wanted to know if there is anything I can do to help the problem. Maybe flash a new radio?
All I know is my aunt uncle cousin and her husband have att ( HTC Inspires ) and they can't make a phone call over 5 minutes without it being dropped. And this has been going on for a year they just won't drop ATT
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk 2
Yes, dropped calls are really starting to become a problem for me. I called AT&T and they recommended a microcell so at least my signal would be boosted in the house. What I didn't realize was the microcell is only for 3g/4g AT&T phones.
Is there anything I can do to help the situation? I really don't want to give up this phone...
Bump. I don't mind when my threads get ignored but this one is important.
And if I can't find a solution soon, I'll have no choice but to leave this device and go for an AT&T Captivate Glide or Droid 4 (if devs get AT&T 3G going) by this Christmas.
I've been getting a lot more dropped calls recently to the point that my phone is almost no longer a phone. And if the call doesn't drop, it cuts out a lot where I don't understand what the person is saying.
I'm almost positive this is because AT&T's 2G network is being phased out and will be gone by 2017. Unless anyone has a better explanation. Does this mean unlocked T-Mobile phones will no longer work on AT&T after that point?
I got a new sim card from AT&T but it didn't seem to make any difference. Running out of ideas...

Every time I talk to one of my friends who is using an AT&T phone, the calls either get dropped or there is audio dropout. Of course, they have iPhones (and they are rabid Apple fanboys) and blame my "crappy Android", but I only have the problem when talking to them. When I talk to others, even my partner in China, there is no problem. So, I blame AT&T.
Both T-Mobile and AT&T are in the process of phasing out EDGE in order to refarm the frequencies for higher-speed data. While this benefits former AT&T customers who bring their unlocked phones over to T-Mobile, for the few people like you who take a T-Mobile phone over to AT&T, it becomes a big problem. But, that is only for data use. Whether AT&T or T-Mobile, the voice service still runs on standard GSM and those frequencies are still served by both companies. Your Slide uses the 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz for GSM service. AT&T serves GSM on the 850 and 1900 MHz bands, T-Mobile serves GSM on the 1700, 1900, and 2100MHz bands, but is now refarming the 1900/2100MHz service to HSPA+. Perhaps AT&T is now repurposing either the 850 or 1900MHz service in your area?

That's most likely possible. I noticed the the 4G Slide only runs on HSDPA 1700 and 2100, neither of which are 3G bands for AT&T.
But the Samsung Relay does support AT&T 3G bands
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4914&idPhone2=4018
Does that mean an unlocked Samsung Relay will work on AT&T 3G?

Yes, the Relay would give you voice calls and HSPA+ data on both AT&T and T-Mobile. There are a few other "pentaband" phones (I believe most new Samsung phones are so) that would give you voice and hspa+ on AT&T, T-Mobile, and most other networks around the world.
Note, my MT4GS gave me excellent voice and HSPA+ data while I was in China by using a China Unicom SIM that I purchased at Pudong airport. Before I left the US, I researched, there are two main GSM networks in China (plus a couple of proprietary TD-CDMA) and one of them uses the same frequencies as T-Mobile US, China Unicom.
Ok, so I guess I'm on my own then?
I know my problem is mainly a hardware one and there's only so much I can do. But I'll try whatever I can if anyone has ideas...

Yeah, you really can't confuse the data frequencies with the voice frequencies. T-Mobile and AT&T are always compatible voice/text with every phone. The dropped/broken up voice call issue isn't from incompatible frequencies, it is because of AT&T's crappy network. Data dropouts, however, would be due to frequency issues. If your T-Mobile phone has only EDGE or has HSPA+ for data, that has no bearing on the voice quality.

On your build.prop
Enable: ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1
Disable: ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=0
Somehow I am having interminent signal lose in our country using mytouch 4g slide. But disabling the fast dormancy did fix the issue.
Before I disabled it I was having 70% to full signal but when using the phone for texting it suddenly drops to no signal. But when I disabled fast dormancy somehow it's stuck at 70% minimum now and never got a signal drop eversince.

If you have to ask, then don't touch it. It is one of the most important configuration files for an Android phone. Make a mistake and it is a real PITA to repair, at least for a newbie who doesn't know what a build.prop is to begin with. Please note, I'm not trying to insult you, just trying to prevent a tragic mistake. That said, you can read many guides on the build.prop and what many of the functions are and there are even build.prop editors that can take some of the hassle out of it.

That one is good for someone who knows more about it. For a newbie (or even someone who does know more), I would suggest something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...vbS5qcnVtbXkuYXBwcy5idWlsZC5wcm9wLmVkaXRvciJd
It makes adding a new item (like what you want to do) easier. It also has some explanations for common tweaks, and can make a backup for you.
Listen to Fuzi about how important the file is.
When you want to experiment, why not make a copy of it and export to a computer?
You can use notepad++ to browse and edit it, and get to see the whole picture much more clearly then working with it on the device...

In reality all you have to do is add them lines at the end of the build.prop, While it is an important file adding things to it is safe if at the end, removing or changing things are not unless you know what your doing.

It's asking me for a property name and property value.
I'm guessing the name can be whatever and the value is ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1 and the other one in a separate entry?
Do I have to write enable and disable in the property value?
Sorry for all the questions, but I tend to be quite inquisitive when I'm treading in unfamiliar waters
Just remember that what you're doing on any computer must eventually be broken down to binary code. Binary code communicates in a series of off & ons and that being the case it already understands that a 0=off & a 1=on. That's my limited understanding of the theory anyway.

[Q] Verizon Galaxy s3 on Straight talk - Johnson City Tn

Apologies first of all if there is an answer on this, however after doing some searching on here and on google I can't find a straight answer that I can understand. I am very new to this kind of thing...
Basic question is this - can I use the galaxy s3 I have currently with Verizon on straight talk?
I am getting mixed answers on it and I figured you guys would probably know best.
Here are the phone specs -
Carrier : Verizon
City : Johnson City, TN
Model : Galaxy s3 SCH-I535
Android Version : 4.1.2 (non flashed - non rooted, if I need to do that in order to accomplish this and void the warranty that is fine, I am familiar with flashing roms and rooting)
Baseband Version : I535VRMB1
Hardware version : I535.10
I will be happy to provide any other information needed. Thank you in advance for reading.
You will definitely have to be rooted. I don't know why you would want straight talk. The service is spotty around east Tennessee. I don't remember a guide on how to flash straight talk however.

I'm in Kingsport, TN as well and I'm also a Verizon customer using the S3 and you'd be a fool to switch from vzw over to straight talk. I've had straight talk, and while it's "alright," it's definitely nowhere near as good of reception in this area as verizon. Verizon may be a little more expensive, but it's well worth it in the long run. When you take your straight talk phone into the mall or wal-mart and you're lucky to have service while standing next to the glass at the entrance door, you'll thank me when you came to your senses and remain under contract with verizon. To each their own though.
Yea im in bristol and i have a friend with ST and it sucks. I would stick to Verizon i hate saying that because they cost so much but really they cover the Tricitys better then anyone.
No disrespect to any of these guys talking about not switching to straight talk from Verizon. I just switched today. Just waiting on my cell number to be ported from Verizon to the straight talk phone and then i will flash whatever phone i chose to buy and replace the ESN. You have to realize their are two different networks you choose from when you go straight talk. GSM(ATT) or CDMA(Verizon). These guys who are bashing straight talk are comparing their Verizon phone coverage with a Straight Talk GSM phone running on ATT towers. Also you cant compare reception of different phones sometimes even if they are on the same towers sometimes bc certain phones are known to have bad reception period. Dont listen to them. You can switch just make sure your donor phone is using Verizon towers. You can look up the model number of the donor phone or make sure it doesnot have a sim card. Sim card phones will be GSM(ATT) and their coverage does suck in rural America. Im in Louisiana and you cant get much more rural. My current Verizon phone and Straight talk have the same number of bars bc they are both CDMA. I have an old HTC Thunderbolt that is just as fast as an iphone 4 bc i have tweaked the hell out of it and use Liquid Smooth Roms which are faster and more stable than even the Pure Google experience. My wife has a Galaxy S3 and I am switching her from Verizon to Straight talk within the next few weeks.

Your first post and you chime in about an area you don't live in. I know how straight talk works. I know certain phones use gsm and some use cdma. I can't believe you just compared a thunderbolt to an iPhone. I hope you do switch her off Verizon to straight talk. That way when she complains about slower data you can come back on the forum and try to figure it out.

Dude you need to chill out. Just because someone may know more that you on a topic dont get your pride hurt. Again I have a straight talk phone and a Galaxy S3 on verizon. The reception is the same. My straight talk phone is on the verizon network. With that being said. How could my reception be bad when compared to my wifes verizon phone if we are on the same towers. DUH!!!!!! I have been using straight talk for 3 months and laughing at ever person with a ATT, Tmobile or Sprint phone. I have better reception as long as i have a straight talk phone made for Verizons network. Which is the most reliable network period.
Whether I live in your area or not is completely irrelevant. If Verizon works best for you. Fine. If Att is best in your area. Fine. Just make sure your phone is on the right network when you go Straight Talk.
As for whoever says Im wrong bc you may have a problem with your EGO. LOL Keep paying double for the same service, coverage, and RECEPTION. Common sense is hard to come by for those who you cant tell anything. LOL
As far as comparing a Thunderbolt to an Iphone 4. This takes someone who knows how to root, jailbreak use custom roms, overclock and get the most stable software available for a phone. Apple OS is extremely stable. Been there and done that. Thunderbolt was crap. Until Liquid Smooths. I am crazy for comparing a Iphone 4 to MY Thunderbolt bc my phone out performs every stock iphone 4 period. Iphone people are brainwashed. My son has a Iphone 4s and now he hates it and wants a galaxy bc he sees the things a Android is capable of and Iphones are not. An iphone is a limited experience. Had two and sold them.

Any Straight Talk phone on Verizon network has identical coverage as a Verizon phone. The straight talk phones using Verizon towers have a model number that begins with a "C" You have to do your homework first on which phone you are going to purchase so that you know what network you will be using. You can go with any towers you want. Sprint, ATT, Verizon. Etc....The experience was bad bc you switched your network when you went Straight talk. Dont switch towers and keep your money in your pocket.
My advice is to get a Straight Talk phone on Verizon network and keep your money in your pocket.

I see you said you're using an HTC Thunderbolt on Straight Talk if I'm reading that correctly. Would you mind explaining exactly how you did that? I'm looking to do the same thing. I've seen a few things about getting an existing CDMA (donor) phone from Straight talk and modifying the MEID, but I've seen a few other things that say that they catch on and boot you from the network. I'm looking to do this for a friend so I don't want them to waste the money setting it up if they're only going to be kicked not long after doing it. Thanks in advance for any advice in this situation.

Was you successful at making your wife's Verizon S3 work with straight talk?
