Note Edge - Does 5.6" Screen Size Include Sidebar Area? - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So does anyone know the the quoted 5.6" screen size includes the bent area sidebar? I assume so, but that would take a chunk out of the normal screen display, which would be a deal breaker for me.

edit:
No, it doesn't include it.
With the side bar it is a 2560x1600 res and 16:10 screen

It's kind of like the Note 1. An Extra set of 10 pixels.

I'm still confused. Samsung's site put it this way...
Display
5.6” Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2560×1440+160)
I have looked high and low all over the internet, and I can't find a disticnt picture or something that shows how they measured the screen size. All I want to know is if the flat portion of the screen is 5.6" and then an additional 160px making the screen total size closer to 5.8-5.9". If the "whole" screen is just 5.6" then this is a bust for me i want the largest screen possible on me note!

Just by the pictures and video i saw it would seem that the main screen 5.6ins and then the side part is added to that.
If you look closely at the pix of the note 4 and note edge. They both start at the same spot on the left. Then on the right the note 4 goes way pass the front camera. While the note edge kinda stops and then the side screen continues the flow.
So I'm willing to bet that the total screen size is 5.8

Also the fact that the edge is wider than the note 4 must mean the screen is larger

yea i saw that too.
body sizes
Note Edge 151.3(h) x 82.4 (L) x 8.3mm (T)
Note 4 153.5(h) x 78.6(L) x 8.5mm (T)
So with all that said it looks like the note edge screen is a hair shorter then the note 4 but then its also a few mms wider.
Either way i dont think it will be a big enough difference to stop someone from getting one or the other due to screen size.
I do believe that the edge is bigger in total screen tho.

Thank you so much for that link. After calibrating my screen to my note 3, I was able to have the note edge, note 4, and my note 3 all on one screen to measure the screen sizes.
Note Edge screen: Diagonal "whole screen including the edge"-- 5-6/8", Width -- 3 1/16" usable flat portion -- 2 7/8", Length -- 4 7/8"
Note 4 screen: Diagonal -- 5 7/8", Width -- 2 7/8", Length -- 5 1/8"
As you can clearly see, the Note Edge only has a total screen size of 5.6". This is because while the screen is wider than the Note 4, it is much shorter by a quarter inch. The Note Edge is a 16:10 ratio, while the Note 4 is a 16:9 ratio screen.
This makes me a little said because I thought the Edge was going to be that same length screen with extra width, in theory making it a 5.8-9" screen. Now I have no idea which phone to get because I wanted as much screen as possible, but the Edge's edge is just so cool lol. When you think about it, the Edge's flat portion of the screen is just that much smaller, closer to 5.4-5".

In the photo you posted, it is obvious the Note Edge perceives to be much larger because of the depth of the picture. The Note 4 is much farther back making the whole phone look much smaller.

I I dont think that the screen being a tad bit smaller is a deal killer. I have heard that you can turn off the side panel to use the full screen (idk if its just some apps or all over the os)
Also it still has more screen left to right just not top to bottom.
At less when i check.also since its curved im willing to bet that the scan of the phone isnt 1005 on that edge.
But the true test is holding both phones and seeing first hand.

Although I believe the full screen size is 5.6", I agree with you that it all comes down to seeing the phones in person and seeing how they feel in the hand. Why the flip do we have to wait a whole month or longer LOL
Oh the other deciding factor is the fact the difference in battery size is pretty substantial. 220mAh diff

Yea I thought about the battery to. But i still think with the new tech and battery saver that it should last longer then the note 3. And probably 30 mins to an hour less then the note 4.
I do dislike that the power button was moved to the top. But i know it would of been hard to keep it on the side. (I had a htc one so the top power isn't to bad)
Other then that I'm all for the phone. The note 4 doesn't seem like a big jump from the note 3. And if i upgrade I want to see some changes lol..
Plus that edge is killer. I bet there next phone will be dual edges with captive volume buttons lol.
Damn that would be killer.

It looks like the Edge has more surface area to work with despite the smaller diagonal:
Note 4: 13.88 inches/squared
Note Edge: 14.09 inches/squared
Obviously the entire area isn't available for everything on the Edge though.

It's just math based on the 5.6 diagonal and the 2560 x 1600 resolution. I could certainly be missing something, but it should in theory be accurate.

So have we concluded what the screen size for edge is excluding the sidebar?
What would the diagonal be?

This article suggests that the usable space on edge (excluding the sidebar) is the same. ... not sure how that works mathematically

First impressions coming from Note 1

Didn't bother upgrading to the Note 2 as it was bigger than N1 and had a lower resolution.
Now upgraded to the N3 coming from a custom JB N1 rom, obviously the N3 is buttery smooth and is a nice size and weight compared to the N1.
The screen isn't much bigger than the N1, as the N1 had a res of 1280x800 it has a nice wide screen, the N3, like the N2, has a more long screen. The N1 screen is the same width as the N3 but the N3 is longer. Obviously the res increase to 1080 is nice.

Phone retailers usually have what's called a Micro Sim Cutter.. I used one of those to cut mine to a micro sim. You just have to be careful not to cut the chip part, otherwise you're screwed.
Or if you're bold enough, you can try normal scissors.

The screen is bigger and the obviously the full 1080 res is nice. The performance certainly seems to be the main upgrade over Note 1 with the screen a close second, I never really used the spen so cant comment on how much of an upgrade the new one is but it looks tangible.

How responsive is touchwiz on the device? I currently have an N1 running PACman and it's very good (ATM) but with touchwiz it lagged horribly I couldn't even stand the experience, was it just the N1 dual core couldn't handle the bloat?
Also does this device have an IR blaster to control a TV like the S4? Does it have the ability to keep the screen on while you're looking at it? Those are nice features potentially nice enough to keep touchwiz provided the experience is halfway decent.

It's very responsive. It might not be as responsive as HTC's sense 5 and Iphone's IOS slimmed-down interfaces, but it's very close.
It has everything that the S4 has, and then some. So yes it does have an IR blaster and all the gimmicky features.
I upgraded from the Note 1 too, this is what i think so far
- N3 is much, much faster. The N1 isnt a slow phone IMO but the 3 just blows it away
- Screen is a lot better resolution wise but i can't see any improvements in colour reproduction/viewing angles etc
- Front gorilla glass seems thinner and doesn't smudge as much
- Phone overall is lighter and doesn't feel as solid (sure this is due to the less weight, the build quality is just as good)
- N3 is thinner, narrower and taller
- S Pen is a lot better, feels like the tip is rubberised so it doesn't scrape across the screen
- No improvement for the speaker that i can tell
- Battery life slightly better (i'd say about 10-20% better than N1)

One thing I hate about the N3 is the browsers, with the N1 we had quick ICS browser which gave you full screen browser, I havent yet found a full screen browser that has access to my chrome desktop bookmarks

Having had the N3 for a couple of weeks now I'll update my impressions comparing it to a Note 1.
First off it cements my idea at the time that the Note 2 was a sidegrade not an upgrade from the Note 1, I don't know about you guys but the Note for me is all about the large screen whilst being small enough to fit in your pocket and for some inexplicable reason the screen on the Note 2 was worse than the N1.
Anyway back to the N3
The size of the phone is great, it feels smaller than the N1, large because it is thinner and less wide, slightly longer.
Screen is good but not a huge upgrade size-wise from the N1, this is because the N1's screen was 1280x800 so was quite fat, the N3 is more lozenge shaped (it is as fat as the N1 though), the density of the screen at 1080p is though awesome.
Battery life is the single key area I would say where it dominates the N1, I had a slightly extended battery in my N1 and my N3 gets about double the battery life of my N1, I can get about 48 hours use from the N3.
Performance is the other area that shines compared to the note 1, understandably as you go from a 1.4Ghz dual to a 2.3Ghz quad, apps and transitions are smooth as silk in comparison to the N1.
The 2 keys annoyances for me were:
1) The lack of a full screen browser that syncs my chrome desktop booksmarks, Dolphin browser is the solution to this on the N3 and works fine
2) For some insane reason Samsung have placed a home selector widget on every screen, like swiping your finger to change screens isn't easy enough and you can't turn the bloody thing off! I have moved to Nova launcher to deal with this and if anything the phone feels snappier (probably due to Nova'a default of having faster transitions)
Thank you for your feedback straxusii . I liked because I did the same the note 2 was a no go for me as changing from a 16:10 (I THINK) aspect ratio on the note 1 to 16:9 in the note 2 was a big mistake in my opinion.
What I want to ask you is this:
how wide is the scren in mm in the note 3 compared to the note 1( if you still have it) not from bezel to bezel but from pixel 1 to pixel 1080 , has sometines there is like half a mm void after the bezel.
I had he note 1 for almost 2 years and love it. Then I sold it and bought the mega 6.3 .. and don't love ir has much , miss the amoled every second I use it .
and miss the camera . Mega 6.3 camera is rubish compared to the note 1 . Believe it or not. Went with the hipe of internet bul**** reviewers sayin the camera was like from the note 2 ..
So how is low light / indoors photo quality compared to the note one? And sunlight visibility ?
Yes I read all the reviews.. some many times.. but I take the word of a xda user anyday than a biased ignorant reviewer
thank you.

Great post. I always preferred Note 1 to Note 2 for the width and the screen. I keep hearing how great the Note 2's screen was but it looked fuzzy to me whereas Note 1 looked much better.
Getting my Note 3 on Monday anyway
One of the first things I did was hold the two screens together to compare and I found the note 1 screen was the same width as the note 3 screen, just the note 3 screen is longer.
I haven't used the camera much but it seems a big improvement, especially in low light.
Nothing can compare to the Note three. It is a technical marvel. The screen is clearer and shape and brighter and larger than any of those.

I'm loving it
I moved from the Note 1 too, for the same reasons.
The Note 3 is faster, and the battery life I am getting is much, much better. This is especially on screen use where I had 4 hours yesterday, and battery still at 45% with over 18 hours of use, including a couple of hours of music. I also find the OS update has improved drain when not in use, often not dropping by even 1% over an hour or more.
My only gripe is the screen resize / one-hand operation does not work without TW, which I do not use.

I would be very annoyed if the Note 4 will only have a 5.7" screen

All the size speculates that the Note 4 will only have a 5.7" but with 4k resolution. I don't get the point of this, why have a such high resolution but still on 5.7" screen?

I'd be more than happy if it would retain 5.7". Anything above 6 inch seems to go overboard with the so called phablet. Pocketability option would be close to non existent if it is.
4k resolution on 5.7 inch for me is fine too. I've tried LG G3 and I am honestly impressed.
But that's just my opinion.
We'll still see what Note 4 has to offer. If it is just a screen size/resolution bump and additional sensor gimmicks. I'd probably pass and wait for Note 5.
Since Note 3 still serves me well. I'm hoping that at 2015. New battery technology would be powering the upcoming handsets, as we all know we are just a year or months away from 64 bit processors. The supposed new ion batteries that theoritically doubles battery life of the current lithium ion batteries.
Yeah seriously, 5.7 is like perfect size. Instead of bigger and bigger screen, they can spend that time making better screen and other specs. Seriously the whole thirst for bigger screen and octo processors is just asinine. At the end of the day, its a damn phone. And then after all those specs dumped into the phone, another one will be released the next year. 5.7 with better screen and more PPI. Yes please
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Free mobile app
I want smaller bezel and slightly shorter.
I reckon its about 5mm too long at the moment.
IF the note 4 has the same 5.7 inch screen size as the note 3 I am going to skip it and wait for the note 5 next year. I want a 6 inch screen note and won't support a phone or a company with my hard earned $$ for a new device with the same screen size as last year's model! I currently own a note 3 with a 10,000 mah zerolemon battery and rugged case so I can wait for the note 5 if need be.
QHD =\= 4K.
I'd like a jump to 5.9" myself.
Introducing the Galaxy note 8, with the best AMOLED screen yet, sitting at 9 inches!
Come on guys, when and why did a bigger screen become part of an update requirement?
I won't mind a bigger screen as long as the size of the phone stays the same (ie smaller bezels). But, there's not much room left.
Hhhhh , you wont see a 4K display in a phone untill next year or the year after and the screen size will be smaller not bigger
Samsung need to compete with the 5.5inch iphone 6 so they will make the note 4 screen smaller to 5.5inch or they will keep the same 5.7inch and it will have a snapdragon 805 chip with a QHD=2K super amoled display like the galaxy s5 lte-a
Personally i have the galaxy note3 and i skipped galaxy s5 because the note 3 was better and i am waiting for samsung to impress us/me with the note4
The screen size doesn't bother me if it goes up, but any of the epic fail features (waterproofing causing system overheating or port covers that fall off/are a pain to use) will preclude me from buying the Note 4.
I want buy it but I won't if it's going to be a turkey like the Galaxy 5, Xperia Z2 etc.
I must admit I get quite a kick out of people who say they'll wait for the Note 5, even though the Note 4 hasn't even been released yet.
For the guys who think the Note 4 sucks, I'd just like to save you a little time...
The Note 5 sucks too.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW
If this the logic is new device = bigger screen then note 6 will be a tablet. For me 5.7" is perfect. If they make the device any bigger than this I won't buy it. It would be perfect if they could keep he 5.7" screen but make the device smaller which means more practical and easy to handle with one hand.
What logic?
I just think 5.7" is too damn small for a phone with a stylus.
Minimum should be 6".
*smaller bezel, like the G3
*stereo speakers, cupping speakers is ridiculous, imo
*better battery life at full brightness, no tweaks
*improved TW speed, the devs have it pretty smooth, but there are still some lag relative to iphones
*an incremental processor upgrade is not going to be enough imo
the iphone will have the better design, better battery life, better processor, and smoother OS and it will be released withing DAYS of announcement, which really means nothing to me since the phone is so locked down, so I am done with Apple products
why can't HTC just release the REAL phone I want which is a 5.7 M8
Personally 5.7" is my perfect size too.. i wouldnt buy if the size would increase..
but screen bigger than 5.7" but smaller or same footprint, well thats another story..
Personally I'm gonna wait awhile before getting a new phone as I am still really happy with my Note 3. Of course I'll be curious and probably tempted but the Note 3 can easily last another 2 years (if not more) and it will be interesting to see what is out and available by then

It would be perfect if they could keep he 5.7" screen but make the device smaller which means more practical and easy to handle with one hand.

Pretty much this. at 5.7" the screen only just fits in the pockets of my slacks without sticking out, and barely better in my jeans. If the device retained the current form factor and reduced bezel size that would be okay though.
One area where samsung could really reduce the size of the device, or increase the screen size is by moving the damn buttons. It is 2014 and Samsung are now the only android OEM with physical home/back/menu buttons, just give us some damn softbuttons already.

Pretty much this. The only thing that could make me move off the Note 3 before that would be a Nexus for Verizon Wireless in the states haha.
Hmm.
1. I think physical button will stay. (have not seen a galaxy phone without it)
2. I think we won't get stereo front speakers. (aforementioned physical button)
3. So much hate for the phone that's not even out yet.
4. I think TW is going to stay. (they now have "Galaxy Apps"!, instead of Samsung apps..., not to mention Samsung wearables only for Samsung phones)
5. New features from S5 will definitely be a possibility. (i.e. heart rate sensor, fingerprint scanner, water resistant rating)
6. I agree that they will have to come up with something we have not seen before(not just software, or features from the S5) or many people will not upgrade or jump ship to a different manufacturer. (sigh...no more updates to Wanam Xposed)
Relax and enjoy the ride.

And if they move that ugly logo to the back, it would be amazing *_*
But where would they put the finger print scanner though?

What logic?
I just think 5.7" is too damn small for a phone with a stylus.
Minimum should be 6".

Not really, when you remember that the note has no on screen buttons getting in the way. A phone still has to be portable you know and unless they're gonna be fitting that screen in the same footprint it may be a little too large IMO.

Screen width in s8+

This question is rather to people who have access to the telephon
What is the real width of the screen - measured with a ruler. I know it's hard because the screen is curved. I would like to know if the screen is at least the same as in Note 3 - 71mm
According to a screen size calculator the width should be 69mm. Real width may be less due to the curved edges.
Its about 2mm wider (usable screen) than my Mate 9 Porsche Design (which probably doesn't help).
But your amazing phone have 5.5''

I just went to the store and compared my S7 edge to it and it really isn't much taller than the s7e at all.

I was in the store the other day comparing the size of my S7 Edge to the S8+.
The difference in width is imperceptible.
As per the width specs on the S7 Edge and the S8+ :
S7 Edge - 72.6mm (2.86")
S8+ - 73.4mm (2.89")
The S8+ is 0.8mm wider than the S7 Edge.
To put that in prospective, the thickness of a credit card is 0.76mm
So the S8+ width is the thickness of a credit wider than the the S7 Edge.
Basically both devices are the same width.

So how did you perceive the difference in screen size?
S8+ with its 6.2" and its elongated aspect ratio is smaller than the 6+phones were used to.
Many people compare it to being "just a slightly longer version" of the s7 edge.
Im coming from a dying Nexus 6 and I'm worried that it'll be like going down in size.

I look at it this way -
The S8+ width is the same as the width of the S7 Edge, but the S8+ is longer (159.5mm/6.3"), compared to the S7 Edge (150.9 mm/5.94"), which is a difference of 8.6mm/.34", therefore there is more screen real estate on the S8+ which is perceptible in hand. As a side note, you're getting a 3500mAh battery with the S8+ compared to the 3000mAh in the S8, whose screen size is similar to the S7 Edge. The S7 Edge does have a 3500mAh battery, but hopefully the processor in the S8+ helps to achieve similar screen time, talk time, etc.
In person, the screen size difference is noticeable in favor of the S8+ compared to the S7 Edge, although the fit in pocket is almost the same except for the increase in length which should be basically imperceptible in pocket, depending on your pockets.
With that being said, I have a pocket where the phone will predominately reside. I was able to fit the width of the S8+ approx. 3" deep in my pocket and the width was exactly the same as the S7 Edge, which fits in the pocket with a 1/4" of width to spare.
I was not able to fit the entire S8+ in my pocket because it was locked in with the tether. The Rep called me and said he couldn't unlock the device (security reasons?) but he has a dummy device I can fit in pocket to check out the comfort and size, which I'll be doing shortly.
I gave you a little more info than you asked for, but hopefully it will help you out

Considering returning my Note 8 for a galaxy s8 plus

I posted in the note forums i thought i would see what replies i get here as well
I loved my note 7 (nice rounded edges samsung oem screen protector etc) This phone just feels ...well HUGE... in pocket as well as in hand... I am realizing im not using the spen at all really (other than to send sparkly messages to my wife) since i got my ipad pro and pencil for sketching. For some reason this thing feels immense in my front pocket and heavy.I read at night and holding this phone can be cumbersome at best.. I love the screen and playing games on it but for pretty much everything else its not what i expected. I went to best buy and held both phones at the same time and the s8+ feels so much better in hand with only a .1 in screen difference (i cannot even notice) Am i crazy for exchanging it for a S8+?
ps i like the dual camera live focus thing but for me personally its not that important. 99% of my phone pics are point and shoot and share to a friend or social media..
I had a s7 edge up until 2 weeks ago when i picked up the note 8 and it just feel gigantic.. I wanted a bigger screen because i wear reading glasses but the ergos are not nearly as nice as my old s7edge or the newer s8 and s8 plus.
Do you want to trade? Is your phone unlocked and what carrier are you on? My phone is unlocked by T-Mobile due to military status and it is in new condition! Message me I'm serious.

there's your answer. and you'll get a bit better battery life with the S8+
I'm sure a lot of people will trade their s8+ for your note 8. Just ask them to add some cash for the difference.

S8+ is the same size, with no SPen and a single camera, and 2 gigs less RAM. The battery is marginally bigger, though. If you want a smaller device with the same basic experience, go with a regular S8.
Just a quick follow up i got my s8 plus and I'm in love!!!! It's so much lighter and more comfortable in hand and pocket.. I'm so glad i switched ?

Not mine ... I have 6gb 128 version. .
I have always since s3 had the notes Note 3 etc... Can't see myself swapping from s8+ this time. Less battery life on the note? Nah - pass.
I agree with your assessment of the two. I did the same Best Buy comparison last week and wound up buying the S8+. However, I will likely trade it in for dual cameras on the S9+. For now, I just wanted the step up from Note 4 and it fits the bill. S9+ will likely be it for a while unless Note reclaims their ergonomics for all. I'm a small person and not going to start carrying a bag around just to tote a phone. Meanwhile S8 was too small and odd feeling compared to Note 4. S8+ is just right.
Personally I hate the aspect ratios they have started using. 16:9 is the ideal ratio and happens to match widescreen video formats exactly. all this 18.5:9 crap just means you have a long skinny screen with less actual space on it. It's amazing how the screen on my old S5 just seems bigger simply because it doesnt have this silly long and skinny aspect ratio. In reality these screens are not actually 6.2" due to this, they are closer to an equivalent 5.5 and really ARE about 5.5 if you want to watch any 16:9 video without cropping it. Using the same logic they have started using for these screen sizes, by continuing to measure diagnonals despite not having a 16:9 ratio, you could make a screen 10" long and 1" wide and call it a 10.5" screen.....but it isn't is it.
That's my only problem with my S8+ (other than the fingerprint scanner placement) and it irritates me constantly. If it was 16:9 (which would also allow a much bigger battery) then it would be perfect. But I haven't exactly seen people commenting on it so i guess nobody else cares.

no I agree with you. once i find a 6" phone with a less stretched aspect ratio AND stereo speakers.. i'd gladly trade my S8+. I'm not a fan of playing games/watching videos with a narrower width but longer horizontals. i wish Google would make the Nexus 6 again with modern hardware.
I actually like the new aspect ratio. It simply sees more stuff then 16:9
Had an s7e before s8+ and to me it's like switching from 4:3 monitor to 16:9 wide FHD monitor.
Only thing I don't like is iris not being as fast on daylight unlocking the phone and fingerprint feels useless here.

I ended up going back to the note 8 !! Even with a case on the s8 plus i was getting false registers on the sides and corners with my big meaty hands... Is will be here Monday. Also in gaming grip or watching movies there note is far superior.. i feel dumb returning it but hey, it was a learning experience and at least i ended up with the better phone in the end
All those guys who say the Note 8 is heaps bigger than the S8+, I own both. a side by side comparison is about 5mm taller and almost exactly same width...
Battery life is pretty mch comparable with both .
I have the Exynos version of both so that may make a difference.

I certainly wouldn't call it "heaps" bigger. The angles are simply awkward for some hands and some situations. As for the weight, a hundred pound person may find it heavier versus a 150 to 200 pound person. Note 4 and Note 5 felt very comfortable. 8 is different. Not bad, just different. Without a doubt, the Note is the better phone. Thank goodness for choice.

Width of the s8 plus screen?

I have a nexus 6p. Great phone for media but the battery is starting to show it's age. I'm considering the s8 plus (or mate 10) for the camera quality etc but I can't find the width of the screen. I know the diagonal but when I watch films on my phone my 6p is great as it's also a great screen (16:9 and not the new longer and narrower tend)
Can anyone please tell me the screen width please?
Nearly 3 inch left to right 6 and half diagonal
I have the note 8, slightly larger screen than s8+ and with the curve, the effective screen area is 2.75" wide and 5.7" high.

Thank you billu for the precision of your answer. Seems the s8 plus screen is as wide as my 6p which is great news.
