[Q] Verizon S3 with 4.1.1 version - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I got the verizon S3 almost 2 years ago and I rooted it back then. The version that I have now is 4.1.1, but the phone is acting up with constant shut down. I have read that it may be the power button, but it does it only when I am outside or driving, the phone does not reboot when at work or home.
Anyway, I decided to update the android to the official verizon latest version, but I am not sure what to do. There are so many links and different options that I am afraid I will brick the phone and then have a very expensive paper weight.
Will it be possible to update to the latest and still keep the apps?
Any help please?
thank you in advance

What links and options are you afraid will brick the phone?

I am just not sure how to proceed, can i just download the latest official verizon update from xda (i think it is the 4.4.4) and install it?
thanks

Generally, you have to run the verizon OTA upgrades in order. This means you need to run 4.1.2, then the others before you can get to 4.4. Running the OTA upgrade should preserve your apps along the way. However, note that anything after 4.1.2 (aka MF1) will lock the bootloader, which will prevent you from running any custom ROMs and kernels in the future. Also note that there have been reports of battery life issues with the Verizon version of KitKat... take that with a grain of salt, but be aware of it.
For what it's worth, I'm still running 4.1.2 unlocked and rooted... there are no TW KK ROMs available yet for this phone, but you can run AOSP or other KK versions.

what is TW stand for? sorry for the ignorance.
Do you recommend a good kit kat rom for this phone? I am correct to assume that installing a new rom will require to re-install all the apps? maybe there is an easier way to do this.
thanks

TW = touch wiz, KK = kit kat (just in case you didn't know) ?

enoxos: Given your question about TW (and other questions) I suggest you do a lot more reading on XDA before jumping into any upgrades. It's not always easy to "jump in" and just apply updates or ROMs. That's not to say it's hard, but I find it's better to read a LOT and know all the pitfalls before performing any update. Granted, I may take it to another extreme, but it's better to know what you're getting into rather than asking for "emergency help" after the fact. It also allows you to be prepared for anything that happens with the necessary downloads and such... that way you don't have to go hunting around for them later.
Regarding the question about which KK ROM to use, unfortunately there is no easy answer there. While I think it's a legitimate question, XDA frowns upon it and tells you to just "try it out" on your own. I feel there should be some way to determine what most people are using, or ask accordingly... but people still complain at the question... I wish there were a better way to get this answered!

thanks guys,I have alerady tried 2 kik kat ROMs and I am trying another one as we speak until I find what I want. Of-course these are not official Verizon ones, which I guess I am fine with now.
I am also going to use Titanium backup to restore all my apps in the new ROM. Is this something that is recommended?

Noooo. It's ok to restore apk files but it's never recommended to restore the data from the apps. I'd suggest keeping your unlocked bootloader and not bothering to take the OTAs or anyone for that matter. I've seen the newest ota to kk, 4.4.2 and honestly unrooted it doesn't look all that much different.
My gf also has an S3, mine is unlocked where as she never rooted hers so it's stuck forever on a locked bootloader running kk. It's truly your own decision on which rom to run, compare what features they have and go from there.

I have already installed the slim kat 4.4.4 ROM. So I am playing around with the apps now, will see if Titanium works or not lol
On another note, when I installed the slim kat ROM (or 2 other previous ones-trying to figure out which one is for me), the free internal memory on the phone was only 5 gB while I have the 32 gB S3. Any advise as to why so little internal storage left?
thanks

Unsure without seeing it. Try using a free app on the play store, there are two I recommend. Either SD maid or Cachecleaner NG, either should free up junk you have. Also do you have any backups on Internal? After the rom essentials it should be down to about 28gb or so

i am installing one of the two apps as you said, but when the new ROM is getting installed, it should delete everything from the internal memory, no?
on the last ROM, i did factory reset, wiped cache, and did a system format in storage section, but still there are crap in there left. The ROM seems to work just fine.

It typically does yes, but it doesn't for some reason delete anything from the data/media folder I've noticed. I use twrp so I've noticed it there
Edit: I've also found after some basic looking around that some people, not necessarily the S3 are having similar issues with log files building up to well over 1gb and up. I looked in the folder where it suggested and I didn't see anything at all.

I used the recovery and I just found about 20 directories from the old ROM that I had. Can I just simply delete these or should I do a fresh installation with different options during install?

You can attempt to do that yes. What did you find in the directories? If you have the rom already installed use a root browser and attempt to delete them depending of course on what files there are. There shouldn't be a good reason why it takes up nearly 18gb+ though

I started up the phone again and used the folder browser that it came with the ROM. Here is what the Slim Kat ROM did: it split up the internal storage into two folders: emulated and sdcard0.
In the emulated filder, I have all the new ROM items (SlimKat items). I have access to these folderes.
In the sdcard0 folder, all the old stuff from the previous ROM (stock verizon 4.1.1. ROM, rooted) are there. I have no access to these due to permissions.
What the hell...

That's normal for kk to partition the SD card. That's odd about the phone not letting you access the folders because of permissions

yes, it looks exactly like the picture you posted. I can access the sdcard0 (which has the 18 gb of old stuff in there) from the recovery when i point to where the zip is for installation of the new ROM. Should I just delete them from there, if I can?

I went to the recovery and formatted the data partition, this gave me pretty much everything back. I know have the whole sdcard partition back (25.2 gB out of 26 gB, I am guessing the other 6 gB go to the system), but still can not access it from the phone, only from the recovery panel.

[App][Mod]Google Wallet Installer

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3.
Requires ROOT, an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, and BUSYBOX!(A deodexed ROM is just recommended)
My newest project, RemoteFlash, was just released! Take a look and give it a try!
Wallet Installer Is Now Available For Free To All Supported Carrier Models On XDA! (Donations Appreciated)
My application, "Wallet Installer", will install Google Wallet on almost any US based Samsung Galaxy S3. It simply edits your build.prop and then places the correct modifications into your system. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which is pretty quick. Just select the appropriate Rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz, and then your carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or US Cellular. I also added a restore option for your build.prop, so you can restore it after you setup Google Wallet. Hopefully this helps you out and makes the process easier!
Wallet Installer has been updated on the server side. The credit goes to Paul Obrien for the new version! To install it, simply reset Google Wallet, delete it, and then rerun Wallet Installer! Make sure to also have BusyBox installed/updated!
Please donate if my work helps you : )
V3: No Recovery/More Stable
And as always: I take no responsibility for bricked devices, whether a soft brick or a full on brand new coffee coaster.
Dude. You are awesome. I was just in the official wallet thread and was hesitant on going through with it because it seemed daunting having to change the build prop. I'm about to flash slim Bean 3.1 and then try this out. Will update this post once I finish trying it out . Hopefully all goes well!!!
Well I ended up lagging on the install but just wanna say thanks again because it worked perfectly. First try and not a single problem as of yet. Awesome!!
Glad to help! Hopefully all goes well! If the download stalls just give it a while, my server is a retired galaxy nexus hooked up to WiFi lol. My WiFi sucks sometimes.

My application, "WalletInstaller", will install Google Wallet on any Verizon S3. It simply swaps out your build.prop with a modified one and then flashes an open recovery (TWRP 2), and in the open recovery flashes the latest version of Google Wallet along with the required NFC libs for your rom. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which can be somewhat slow, but I'll be upgrading soon. Hopefully there won't be any download issues. Just select the appropriate rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz. Hopefully it helps you out and makes the process easier! It has been tested on my device, which is running CM10, but the other options haven't been tested, but they should work great. I will also hopefully make it to support all US carrier based S3's after the weekend is over.
My application will be in the market for 99 cents if you feel like supporting the cause(will post link once uploaded), or you can download it here for free. Please don't post links to my application without my personal consent. Thank you!

So I installed the app and set it all up just fine, in fact, I was about to test out wallet at a locat establishment but I noticed something was a little weird. I tried to change my wallpaper to a picture in my gallery. For some reason I got an error that "Not enough space. Delete photos, music, etc." Last time I checked I had plenty of space. I opened up setting and storage to find my device storage has a total of 4GB of space (with close to 2GB's of free space remaining). My S3 is a 16GB unit. Obviously things are a bit haywire. I'm running CleanROM 5.0 at the moment so I'm not sure if your app would conflict with that but things were fine prior to this. What do you think?
when i choose ics touchwiz install it loads terminal emulator and says rm failed for /system/build.prop no such file or directory
I'm not sure if my app would interfere quite like that. It shouldn't, but when messing with the build.prop and a custom ROM you can never be positive. If anything else odd happens, pm me and I'll look into it.

It's possible that your system didn't mount properly, or that your ROM is using some sort of mod that moved the build.prop, or it may have been removed or altered by another application.
Got mine installed and all looks good but same thing about the wallpaper..........says no space even though it has space.

Here's one question for you...
Why does your installation include TWRP 2.3.1.0.
I already had a CWM Recovery...that was strange to me.....when I get to work I am going to try to flash over that to see if that's the problem. Could be that. But right now I can't access my internal drive let alone the backups if I were to start over.......LOL.....I wouldn't be able to get to.
Live and Learn I guess.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble. I included TWRP because it uses an open, unencrypted script file to pass commands to recovery. CWM, from my understanding, requires an encrypted, not so universal script file called extended commands. Depending on what recovery someone was running, flashing a script would not work, or it would possibly brick their device. I wanted to make sure everything was done correctly.
Also... I will take a look at all my server side files today and the app. I can't make changes from where I am, since I don't have ftp setup and I'm out of town, but I can download them and see where I may have gone wrong. My best guess is the build.prop swap causing issues, if any of you have possible leads, post them here and I can attempt a fix later today or tomorrow.
BTW...Wallet worked like a charm in 7-11 and Whole Foods
Taking pictures is a little harder too...have to switch to external to save the pictures....the Camera 4.2 doesn't even allow you to switch to external card.
Would be a shame to scrap this working wallet for these issues

I'm getting ready to attempt a flash on CleanRom in a few minutes to see if that's the only ROM having issues. Hopefully you guys can stick this out until everything's working great ; )
I flashed wallet and libs using my app on CleanRom 5. I was able to replicate the same error as you guys posted. Also, I don't know if you guys checked, but in recovery it mounts the internal sdcard perfectly, so that tells me it may have something to do with CleanRom in specific. I'm going to flash through some stock touchwiz ROMs with Odin and see what results I get in that area. Hopefully it's just a ROM specific ordeal. Sorry for the long posts, just trying to keep you all updated!

Sprint SPH-P500

I've searched everywhere and can't find anything on the sprint SPH-P500.
Does anyone know of any guides out there? I don't want to risk bricking it with a root from another model number. Thanks for all your hard work guys.much appreciated!
Do you have your stock rom? If you do, try rom for GT-5100 but you will not have 4G capability...
And if it don't work, you go in download mode and then restore your old stock rom thank to odin!
I guess everyone has forgotten about our tablet
I've never done anything on the coding side. But if someone could give me some guidance, I'd be willing to attempt to port some of the greatness that all of the other tablets are getting.
Its a great undertaking. I do website development and have linux experience and would rater not touch rom development. I have been interested though.
As far as the gt builds, i can give that a try. I dont have 4g in my area anyways,. Ill just have to become comfortable with odin before i do anything. Thanks!
Has there been any update on this? Looked around and doesn't look like there is even a developer working on it.
I can't even find the stock firmware for the SPH-P500.05 to download. I'm about to see if a sprint store will give me the file so I can start experimenting. If someone has a link to the stock firmware for this device it would be great. Maybe I'll get my hands dirty and make a few attempts and maybe get a guide going.

I understand that CVE-2013-2094 has been ported to work (escalate to r00t) on Android devices. I don't know if this model has "performance events" turned on but, if so, could this be an opportunity to get # on our tablets?
Also, I have a way to kick off processes as system. Could that help us?

I need to subscribe to this thread. Sorry about the delay. I have been playing with the idea of flashing the GT-5100 firmware, but there is no way back to stock if things go bad. I think I'm going to be more proactive and talk with the local Sprint store to see if I can get that firmware / bin from them. The fact that the development community for this device is so dead is a bit eerie.

I can also confirm cydia impactor works and is really as easy as downloading to pc run impactor hit startband it installsnsuper su right to the root of the tablet after that I have been able to successfully install (titanium, busybox, , link2sd, rom manager) and they all have root access
I have also been able to download mobile terminal and at $ prompt put in (su) and # should show letting you know you now have root access
after that I have also been able to change the default storage to ext2 by using. pm set-install-location 2, from # prompt and using link2sd to move apps 2 extsdcard for those of you that have an 8 gigger like I do I hope this helps im still alittle new to android
Any custom roms found for this tablet? I googled and I could only find rooting method but no custom roms (e.g. kitkat) for this tablet. Can the P5100 ones be used instead? I don't need the 4G service.
cydia impactor isnt recognizing the device. usb drivers fully installed and all that... kinda weird
nevermind. it worked!!! now i just need to install recovery and find a darn ROM LoL
I just received my Sprint SPH-500, and wouldn't have known it's a nonstandard Galaxy Tab 2 variant without this thread. I rooted mine with Towelroot, so I still have a locked bootloader, but full root access. AFAIK, my flash counter hasn't been triggered.
Here;s a screen capture of my downloading screen. It shows I haven't done a custom binary download (what triggers the flash counter), and I'm not running a custom binary, as I'm running the Samsung Official binary. But it does show my system status is custom..

I should have progress to report on moving apps to my external sdcard and second partition soon.
After experimenting with Link2SD for more than a week, I gave up on it. It's just too unstable to be a daily driver. I only have the 8 GB model, and run several large data astronomy and birding apps, They left me with 800 MB free RAM on my internal SD storage, and I still had other apps to install.
Link2SD put apks, Dalvik-cache, and lib files on the second partition of my external SDCard, but lost the links a reboot or two later. It claimed to move 1.8 GB of files, but showed 14 GB of RAM used on my second partition. It lost user and system apps that were linked, unlinked, and lost, for instance, the Google Play Store Services.
I ended up using a symlinking app called Foldermount, similar to the old (unsupported) Directory Bind app. It stores data folders on my external SDCard, and symlinks them so my astronomy and birding apps think they're still stored on the internal SDCard. I've got all my apps installed, and still have nearly 3 GB internal SDCard RAM free.

[Q] ODIN flashable cwm versions for the relay?

hi..
i'm narrowing my previous question, and placing it in it's own thread as it seem to more common
before rooting the main problem i have is to actually download CWM, almost all the threads i've seen provide you with the same link to the odin flashble cwm, (3a) which simply won't install what ever package i give it (whether be it su, or another cwm or twrp ,always the same message for signature verification), so it doesn't help if i see an "updated" version cwm which can be flashed by cwm, as i have a chicken and currently laying the egg to spawn it.
so the question is, where can i find ANOTHER cwm-recovery which can be flashed by ODIN?

Hopefully, I'm not misunderstanding your question -- I was able to root my Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G (including installing CWM over ODIN) following these instructions, the version of ODIN/CWM linked there works. (Read the comments if you have any issues -- as the instructions aren't perfect.)
In case the link dies, here are duplicates of the links:
1. ClockworkMod Recovery (It’s attached in the post)
2. SuperSU (Download the Recovery flashable version)
3. Odin
Also, if you're looking for a place to start, I found this thread extremely helpful.
Let me know if this answers your question or not, hopefully this helps someone.
sadly it's the same things i downloaded
the root problem as far as i know is the cwm, it will not install ANYTHING, not superSU, not twrp, it will always fail with signature verification error, at the time i googled a little, http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-ii/126545-what-causing-my-cwm-error-solved.html and it seems that this cwm doesn't allow to turn the signature check, thus my quest for another cwm, or a twrp i can flash with odin.

CWM does allow you to disable signature check, but it's already off by default (it was for me -- the one I linked to allows it) -- I think it's in the advanced menu -- you're sure you're choosing the right options in ODIN (PDA, and checking the right boxes?), and ODIN says 1/1 succeeded or whatever? You're not checking reboot? You're pulling the battery at the right time, and that you're booting into CWM (and not the stock re-flasher app)?
Can you attach a picture of what you're seeing on your phone?

I don't think you flashed CWM with ODIN correctly -- it should say "CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2" at the top and bottom -- it looks like this:

In ODIN, did you check the box that says "Phone Bootloader Update", and you selected the .md5 file under the PDA section? And it said 1/1 updated? And then you pulled the battery? (like in the instructions I linked to?)
yes i realize the issue now
i don't what happened that made me thing i updaded the cwm.
so now i'm rooted. thanks.
i'm guessing there's still no custom "bloatless" rom around right?

Woot. Would be awesome if you hit the "thanks" -- button, I'm currently at 0, and could use some street cred around here. :good:
As for custom roms, there is one that claims to be bloatless in the table of contents thread that I linked to earlier. But I can't get it to flash. I think I might be doing something wrong. :silly:
I have an open thread about what's the best rom, right now, as the only options appear to be: stock (bleh), bloatless stock (doesn't flash with cwm), and Cyanogen 10.1 (but there is no real "stable" release, even the "unofficial 13-03-09" one is broken in some ways). If you can answer any of those questions, I'd be very thankful.
Edit: Also, don't bother with the stock tethering fix or whatever that is linked there unless you've backed up your stuff first -- every attempt I've made to flash that (even on stock) just borked my phone and made it not boot.
OH SNAP!
Looks like there is a newer ODIN flashable version of CWM for our phones (and seriously, don't use the 6.0.1.2 one for any 4.2.x roms, you'll wind up with weird folder structures on your phone like sdcard/0/0/0/0/..../0 etc. -- definitely use the newer one!)

what 4.2 roms?
as far as i know the only 4.2 rom for relay which is CM.

Yeah... that's what I'm talking about -- and there's a new one out every day. So, if you've flashed more than one with CWM 6.0.1.2 you'll end up with a weird folder structure on the root of your /sdcard/ -- each time you flash one of the 4.2 roms, it adds another /0/ so you end up with /sdcard/0/0/0/0/0/.../0 -- etc. -- So don't do that. Use CWM 6.0.2.8 -- it's fixed in 6.0.2.8 -- it will flash it normally, and you won't end up with a million nested /0/ folders.
so far i've only flashed the stock rom
is CM really worth it above the stock one?

YES.
Regarding the nested "0" folder issue, I have about 5 or 6 of those before I realized what was happening and flashed TWRP. What is the best way to get rid of those "0" folders? I assume I should not just delete the base one.
will it cause my phone to be cooler..

Per someone offsite, I just copied all the data into the first 0 folder and deleted everything else. Don't seem to be missing anything.
sadly the CM doesn't seem have wi-fi enabled on my device, i keeps saying turning wi-fi on and nothing happens.

CM10.1 - 3.4 kernel I assume.
If so, then you need to update your bootloader & modem for wifi to work properly on 3.4 (read original post on 3.4 thread for download links etc.)

Um, really dumb question I feel. Where can I find this CWM (6.0.2.8) version for the Relay? Or does CWM work regardless of the device it's been flashed on?

Like I said, upgrade to CWM 6.0.2.8 or newer (or TWRP, I've read, but I haven't tested), then it won't create anymore new nested /0/ folders.
To get rid of the existing ones, in CWM 6.0.2.8 - go to "mounts and storage" and select "format /sdcard" -- (you'll probably want to just go through and format everything except for /external_sd and then reinstall the latest nightly Cyanogen 10.1 or JB stock.)

Rooting Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G (Noob!)

Hey Guys,
I know there are several posts out there that exist which ponder upon how exactly to root the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, but majority of the threads reference to Gingerbread, and not the ICS. I previously owned a MyTouch 4G, and had rooted it, and had upgraded to this phone few months ago, as it was on a nice sale, and I would like to install CM10 on it once again. I am not familiar with the instructions as to rooting this device either, as I am completely lost.
Can someone please provide me a step by step instruction for rooting this phone so I can install ROMs? I would really appreciate it, and would love to contribute back by creating my own (updated) how-to for rooting this device.
As for specifics, this device is running Android Version 4.0.4.
Thanks!
This is the guide you need for ics:

Let me know if you have questions. First and foremost, get rid of kies on your computer, kill it with fire. Then plug in that Blaze so drivers download. Then start the guide.

I got all the way upto Step 3, where Odin had given me the green box. When I reach to Step 4, it mentions to go on the ADB command, what exactly am I supposed to do? Can you happen to make that entire step more noob-friendly?
Additionally, how would I flash the SuperUser zip file? I am assuming I would run this through ClockWorkMod?
Sorry for all these silly questions!

No, don't worry about adb, use the other method to get into recovery. Holding the volume and power buttons. Hold all three (volume up/down, power) slow count to ten, let go of the power button (keep holding the volumes) and keep holding until you get into recovery! Then once there, go to install zip, select superuser zip, flash! Rooted bro.
Some words for you. I think you'll be able to find cm10 "stable", it's not the one you want. Look through the last few pages of the cm10 thread to find the best one. Last I checked @thomas.raines 4.1.2 (cm10) version of ParanoidAndroid is available to flash, it's super stable, and super awesome. If you go above 4.1.2, there are small bugs (do a bit of reading in the op's of those ROMs), a side effect of a great piece of hardware being left behind by Samsung. If you want to go above 4.1.2, you'll need to update your recovery. Read through the development forum, that thread is in there. Any questions, feel free to ask! Happy to have another active member!

The ParanoidAndroid build is my personal opinion. The "stable" CM10 isn't that stable (I only know this by reading through the development thread for that rom). If you're dead-set on using Cyanogen the stable build isn't great (again from what I read) and there's a much better build somewhere in the development thread. The ParanoidAndroid I mentioned is CM based (very similar) and, imo, a better rom. But it's your choice, don't let me sway you. Try them both and see which one you prefer, really. But I do know the stable one posted isn't the one you want. And FYI, CM10 = 4.1.2.

Haha, should of taken your word on that earlier. I installed the ROM, re-backed up everything, till I find out the Camera has that "No External Storage Message"... Quick question, I couldn't find a link to the official CM10 based ROM you had mentioned, can you possibly provide the link?
If best, what is the most stable ROM available for this device? I would prefer to avoid experimenting as I am in school and don't have enough time to do so

I'm sorry man, I just realized that the version available for PA isn't what I said. That's my bad. I'll chat with @thomas.raines and see if he can provide a link or something. I'll get back to you on that one.
As far as other stable ROMs, this is AOKP, it was the first rom I Flashed after I rooted, so it has a special place in my heart. I checked the rom link, it's good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989825
I haven't ran it in a long while, but I remember it being stable and fast.
This is Liquidsmooth, another I ran that was also stable. I don't remember much about it but I saw that I had it in my signature for a little bit. I won't stay with a rom if it's not stable, so since it was in a sig, it must have been good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284763
Try these two and see what you think. If you don't like em, I'll figure something out with thomas and see if I can't get PA back up.
This is a VERY slim gapps package. I'm running it right now on my phone and my Tab. When I say slim, I mean it has Play store and all syncing abilities. That's it. No Search, Gmail, Hangouts, etc. If you want something with all the Google goodies, look around. I'm not one to run gapps with a bunch of Google stuff so I don't know where to look for an updated 4.1.2 package.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240652
So, experiment. Have fun. And if you need speakerphone, scanning camera, then you want to stay at 4.1.2. If those things aren't important, look into the kitkat ROMs, they're excellent. If you decide to go kitkat, you MUST update your recovery.

Thanks for the links, I will install both! You mentioned you install the slimest possible GAPPS, why is that, if I may ask?
EDIT: I reflashed the AOKP ROM, no luck. I am going to flash the other Liquid Smooth ROM and see what happens.
Sorry for the double post again, but I went ahead and installed the AOKP ROM you had posted.
When I go through CWM, it picks up my SD card that I am using, but for some reason, when I have the phone booted up, I go to my camera and get an error that reads similar to what I was getting with the original CM10 which is "No external storage available". Any ideas on how to fix this? I did hit to mount my sdcard on CWM, but no luck. Did reboots and what not, still no luck.
Hmm... In the camera settings, is there an option to change the directory of where a picture saves? Or, and you should check this first, open a file Explorer and go to your ext sd card. Do you have a folder named DCIM?
I don't like all the Google Apps mainly because they cause a ton of wakelocks and I don't ever use them. I use Chrome, but DL'ing that from the Play store asked me to Greenify it, keeping it under control.

Alright, so here's what I'm thinking. The stock cameras (if I remember) don't have the option to save to external storage. It was this limitation that made me use a different camera app. So, go to Play Store and get Camera JB+, it has an option to save to external SD card. Find the option (long press the screen, go to settings) change it to external and see if that helps. Or, go into stock camera and see if it has that option. Same with the browser, within settings somewhere there should be an option to change storage location.
If none of that works, my last suggestion is to format both internal and external in recovery. Of course this deletes everything, so transfer all files you want to keep to a computer then format both. Reflash rom on clean install (format cache, dalvik, data, and system) then Reflash everything.
In fact, what did you format/wipe before you Flashed the rom and gapps? This is important and might be the issue...

I originally was running ICS Stock, after that I flashed to CM10. After that, it was AOKP 4.2.1, and now it is Liquid Smooth's 4.2.1. When I plug my phone into the computer, I cannot access the internal memory card either (just noticed this).
SO... I have fixed the issues!
I found the Stock ROM, flashed that, and suddenly my Camera worked again. After that, I decided to reflash AOKP, and now everything works fluidly! I can't tell what exactly the problem was, but it looks like I have resolved the issues.
Thanks a lot for your help! I look forward to learning more and contributing to the community!

That's excellent! Glad it worked out. Just a question, before you flashed AOKP, did you do any formatting or wiping in recovery?

I did the usual Format and wipe Cache, I usually do those every time when I would flash a new ROM.

[Q] My Infuse upgrade journey to 4.x.x, I need help

Hi,
Background:
I am a retired software engineer. I worked on the windows platform and focused on the Visual Basic family of code though I was familiar with many languages from assembly to C. I am very familiar with the programming jargon but find myself at a loss when reading to posts here, so bear with me if I don’t have a complete grasp on the terminology.
My Story:
I have an AT&T Samsung Infuse with android v2.3.6 and have been very happy with it. This is my first smartphone and didn’t pay much attention to how it worked until now. I bought an irrigation controller that has an app for the phone. After installing the controller, I found out the app only runs on v3.0 or newer (mine is v2.3.6). So, here I am trying to upgrade my phone to a newer version so the app will work (trying not to buy a new phone for this). My first goal was to back up everything, so I spent a number of days reading threads here trying to understand what I needed to do. I discovered that v3.0 is a tablet only OS (not completely sure about this). I researched the different version and thought that v4.3 or v4.4 would be the final goal. This lead me to finding a path that required going through v4.0 to get there (please correct me if I have drawn the wrong conclusion on this). I could not find a way to back up the OS without stumbling on the instructions to either root the phone and/or wipe the data and cache to install something.
What I have done so far:
1). I paid to have my phone rooted. The apps I installed would not back up the entire OS and my recovery did not have an option to do that.
2).I followed [ODIN][UCLB3] AT&T 2.3.6 Gingerbread with root and CWM recovery option - Infuse 4g instructions. I was able to back up the entire rom from the red recovery.
3).Next I followed the [Firmware][ICS]UNOFFICIAL CM9 for the Infuse 4G (07/28/2012) instructions. I was now up in the v4.0.4 OS but did not have any of my applications or any of my old data.
4). I redid step 2 and restored the backup I made and was back on v2.3.6 again.
5). I installed fx w/root, Easy Back, then step 3 and got some of what I wanted but no apps. So step 4 again. I did this again with My Backup Root (MBR). I had a backup of my apps this time but they would not install in v4.0.4. So I did step 4 once more.
And yes I have been bitten by a boot loop. I did something wrong after I got it to 4.0.4 once. Not sure what it was.
Questions:
1). Is (was) there a way to back up the OS(ROM) from my vanilla v2.3.6 so I had a true representation of my original phone? Seems like a bit of a catch 22.
2). When I was on v4.0.4, I could not find settings/application to change both my USB settings and Playstore options. This caused the restore to fail because it was not from the playstore. I was able to use fx to find the backup file, select an apk file and try to restore it that way. It told me it was not a playstore app, but gave me a link to settings/Application so I could change it. Then I restored the app successfully. Then I went back to MBR and tried to restore the data for that app, it failed. Now that the Playstore option was turned off, I tried to restore from MBR. This went successfully but the restore of the Data failed because the app was not installed. I am thinking that there is a difference in the folder structure that is causing this (maybe to do with MTD). I was not able to turn on the Setting/Application/Playstore option. Where did the Settings/Application option go in v4.0.4?
3) Is there a way to backup up applications from v2.3.6 and restore them to v4.0.4 (or any 4.0 + version)? I could do it one at a time from the MBR backup but not the applications data.
4). I noticed that in v4.0.4 there was a screen after the first Samsung one that said Galaxy S. Can this be changed?
5). After the Galaxy S screen (again in v4.0.4) came a screen with a stickman and real intense flashing. Can this be changed?
6). How can I find the most stable ROM to use? is there a list of available ROMs all the way to v4.4?
I am sure I will have more questions, Thanks

1. when updating unless you have a google account synced for contacts and apps....it all disappears when you jump from gb to ics to jb to kk
2.the only apps that will back up to the google account will be ones downloaded from the playstore..minus the data
3. that galaxy s screen will stay all the way to 4.4.3 kk
4.you can always change the bootanimation in custom roms (the stickman screen)
5.CarbonRom so far most stable 4.4.3 kk rom https://carbonrom.org/downloads/?device=infuse4g&type=nightly flash with these gapps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
6. after a certain point you cant flash a GB backup on KK cwm cause it will cause brick so if you want to go back to stock use heimdall or odin to do so
7.most of the apps on a gb roms wont run on ics or higher same with ics apps and jb apps

Thanks for the reply
Can I go directly to 4.4.3 from 2.3.6 or do I need to step through 4.0.x like the others? I can't seem to find any specific instructions for them.
There are only nighty's at that link, no releases. How do I know what version they are (4.4.2/4.4.3)? I think it is the one dated 4/19/14.
Thanks again.

OK, I am about to try this but have a couple questions. In other instructions, the clear cache (step 6a,b and c) is done before the flash, yours is after. What is the difference between the two methods? In step 3 you say "DISABLE vodoo lagfix and /system lagfix". I have CWM v2.5.1.3. I can see the option for vodoo lagfix but not /system lagfix. What is /system lagfix and where can I find this option?
[UPDATE] I found /system lagfix. it shows after selecting the voodoo lagfix option.
I am also making the assumption that because I got CWM v2.5.1.3 through [ODIN][UCLB3] AT&T 2.3.6 Gingerbread with root and CWM recovery option - Infuse 4g instructions, that I can skip step 1 thru 2c and start at step 3
OK,
Everything went well. Even better than I hoped. I can't remember what setting I changed to make this happen, but all the apps in playstore have been restored to the phone, even the free ones. I used Titanium to backup all my apps and then used it to restore the data for some apps like color notes. There is a setting that tells it to use the new locations instead of the original locations. I am a happy camper.
It will take a while for all this to finish, but this is what I was expecting.
I still can't find the equivalent option for Settings/Application from v2.3.6. Like, let me chose what USB mode when I plug it in? Most of the time I just use it to charge the phone. And where can I change the permission to restrict installing only apps from playstore?
Thanks your input.

Glad you got most everything working. The option you are looking for is under Settings > Security > Device Administration (heading), and it should be called Unknown Sources. Hope this helps.
Ok,
Now I am having a new issue. I can't seem to get any of the apps that move apps to the external sd to work. The option to move is missing in the storage section. I am running out of space in the 2gb partition. AppMgr III and App to SD can show me a list of apps that can be moved, but when selected, there is no Move button present. Am I using the wrong app for 4.4.3?
It would be nice if that 2gb partition could be made bigger.
Thanks for any advice.

It doesn't hurt to clear them and safer for new rom to boot up w/o residual data from previous version. Flashing from odin would wipe all data from your phone.. not your Internal SD card. Reason I did it after is because of the installing of sgs kernel flasher to flash Synthesis GB Kernel. If you didn't install anything then just wipe cache partition and dalvik cache are good enough.

Yes skip them if you already reached that part. The rest is simple enough to do once lagfix is disabled.

Thanks,
That solves the Application install option. I still need to find the USB connect option so I can select at connect.
OK, New problem,
Everything was working just fine. Then I unplugged the USB cable and went for a ride. No Mobile Data (no Internet). I checked all the settings That I know about (They moved them all of course) and it looks like everything is set right (though I am not an expert). Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks again

Well, I found out that the APN was changed, not sure how. It is a good think my wife has the same phone that I can check or I would be going back to my stock image to find this.
Thanks,
