[Q] Is it possible to root a locked phone? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
A friend of mine recently bought on the Internet a Moto G which turned out to be carrier-locked. Now, I have no idea to what carrier it is locked and so I am asking you this: apart from the obvious solution which is cellunlocker.net, is it possible to root the phone, install a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod and use it with whatever carrier?
What woud you suggest for someone in our predicament?
Thank you!

You can probably unlock the bootloader and root the phone, despite it's carrier locked. That won't remove the lock tho and you won't be able to use it on another carrier just like that.
On the other hand you can always buy an unlock code off ebay for 2 euro or so.

Thanks, liveroy! Just a quick question as I've never had to do this, if you don't mind: does it matter that I don't know the carrier to which the phone is locked?

Specifically for the Moto G, you need only the IMEI.

I have a E5 supra Cricket Phone. I want to keep the service with Cricket, I just want it Rooted. I have to wait 6 months with the phone - and the Motorola site wont let me do a OEM unlock. In developer mode it does let me turn it on.
Still possible to root? I am not interested in changing Rom, Simply having it Rooted. its a XT 1924-6
Note : its a spare phone, 10 Bucks a month - 4th line. Wife dropped it cracked screen. So not my main driver/ Main is a Tmobile Motorola Z2 Force that's Rooted and US cell Rom. Keep it at the house for house phone.
About the Carrier from the Original Question : The model Number like on my e5. : XT 1924-6 That dictates the Carrier. Look by the battery and google the number.

Verizon Moto G Unlock Bootloader / Root?

Does anyone know if the Verizon version of the Moto G can be easily unlocked and rooted like the GSM version? Knowing Verizon's track record with locked down devices I wouldn't be surprised if it can't be unlocked. I'm thinking about buying one as a wifi/media device for my car, but I'd also like to play around with dev on it so a non-unlockable bootloader would be a deal breaker.

Just to be clear, *all* Moto Gs (GSM) ship with locked bootloaders, even if you buy one that is factory SIM-unlocked, but Motorola offers a way to unlock the bootloader on the phone (for free) via their web site after you register it and request an unlock code. In the U.S., doing so voids your hardware warranty.
So the question isn't whether or not the Verizon model will have a locked bootloader or not. It surely will, as they all do. The question is whether Motorola's on-line bootloader unlocker will work with Verizon-branded CDMA model or not. And at this point, given that it hasn't been released yet and nobody has one, how is anybody supposed to answer that question?

It's actually available in some Best Buys right now and I think I've seen a few people say they've picked one up. I also updated the OP to use the right terminology though I'm sure everyone knew what I meant anyway.

I was able to purchase one last night at my local Best Buy after proving to them that they were in fact somewhere in the store, and waiting for them to call their Verizon rep, I just attempted the bootloader unlock on the Motorola Developer (official bootloader unlock) and I can confirm that it is not eligible for unlock at this time. Huge letdown for me as I was gonna get one for myself soon, but the wife won't really care about it being unlocked so for her it's still a good deal.
I purchased the moto G today and it says it is not eligible for bootloader unlock.
I was able to get past the activation screen and not activate it.
Every time I turn the phone on it does ask for activation. Wish I could get rid of this...
Anybody have a way to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon version?
I am waiting for unlock and root for VZW version too before I get it
Moto-G bootloader...
I was fat and happy to buy a pair of these when they became available in my area, but not being able to unlock the bootloader, and also not able to obtain the code from Circle-M, has forced us to begin looking at other devices, and forget the 'G'.
Too bad, I was really looking forward to expanding its horizons, but not if the game is to maintain a lock on my own device, no thank you!

I got the US CDMA version for BoostMobile & had it unlocked 'n rooted w/in minutes of unboxing yesterday.
You sure you're entering the serial # correctly?
(I didn't take out all of the spaces the first time and got denied, then fixed it & unlocked)
Good luck!

So this may be a dumb question, but would it be possible to unlock the bootloader of a Boost Moto G and flash it to Verizon?

I believe you can't flash a Boost CDMA phone and use it on Verizon (and vice versa): CDMA phones don't have SIM card to identify carriers; instead the carriers keep a database of admissable IMEI. Boost IMEI obviously not on Verizon's database, in which case you are stuck.
(Feel free to correct me, but please hold your flame )

Just attempted to on a VZW MotoG with no success.
Well thats a bummer. I tried to unlock it but seem to have problems with the fastboot drivers on my pc. Ill mess with it a little bit later and post the results.

You have to activate it and get a phone number to get past that screen. You dont have to pay anything, just select "pay later" both time it asks you. It'll give you a number and then you can connect to wifi to do the rest of the steps.
Altering the setup app in any way thereafter reboots the phone, so you'll always have the activate app in your drawer. Thanks, Verizon.
Verizon is ONE BIG PILE Horse-Chit.. I hate that company with a passion...
So I moved my Family to T-Mo and bought 2 Nexus 5's and 2 Moto G's!
I will NEVER-EVER go back to Verizon... EVER!
They are the most archaic, backward and Xpensive carrier in North America
Pleas do yourself a favor and leave that - HORRIBLE effin COMPANY
P.S. I REPEAT - I will NEVER-EVER go back to Verizon... EVER

[Q] Unlocking a SIM Locked AT&T Note Edge

Hello All,
I'm newbie in Unlocking and Rooting the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. It's my brother's phone and he sent it to me from US to Egypt, I need now to unlock the phone and my question is,
If I Rooted the phone and unlocked the Bootloader and Flashed a Custom ROM, will I be able to use any SIM card? Or I have to Unlock the phone using the Unlock websites for 29$?
Thanks in advance.
Currently, there isn't a way to root the AT&T version of the Note Edge. The answer to your question is yes, if your are able to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM, you would be able to use your SIM card.
I wouldn't trust any of the websites offering an unlock or root services but that's just my opinion.

I bought an unlock code back in Nov last year, the day that I got the phone. Worked perfectly. Now I can use any GSM SIM cards.

Care to provide the information so that we can also do it?
And love the replies that are sarcastic in nature.
You've posted more than I have, and all this time you don't know that you can buy unlock codes from various places? It has been discussed to death in the forums.
Anyway, since you want to know, I'll help you out. I bought my code from cellunlocker . net. You need another SIM card that is not your network, plug it in the phone, and the phone will ask you for the unlock code. Put in the unlock code that you bought from the place that I mentioned. Viola! It's permanently unlocked.
try unlocking on here

They can be carrier unlocked after 1 year of service. If you have forgot to reload or run out of minutes, the timer restarts. This goes for straight talk and tracfone (as far as I know).
I also have a J7 Sky Pro and i really need it carrier unlocked and would like it rooted. I am currently figuring this thing out so i may be able to help.
anyone get anywhere on these tracphones yet???
here's a reply to the after one year unlock above, if I wanted to hear that I wouldn't be here. I OWN this phone, I have a receipt where I purchased the phone cash from a retailer. There was no agreement, issued, signed, nor agreed to what I had to do with the phone after I purchased it. If I choose to unlock it and use it on any network I choose including ones out of the USA, that is my business. Now as far as bootloader, ok it's unlocked, now what is the next move here??? Sorry to sound crass but if you can't add to the conversation with REAL information stay on the porch.

Tracfone security is tough. The only possible way to root it would be to find a leaked engineering firmware online somewhere and flash it to the phone. Then try king root. Also, unlocking would be kinda useless for this phone. The bands for this phone do not support ATT or Tmobile. It's a Verizon device since it ends in VL.
Now if you bought the 737TL version, unlocking would make more sense.
I'm samsung illiterate and really need help.
I hope I'm on the correct thread. I really need help. I won't use the correct terminology but hope someone is fluent in dumb blonde. My phone broke so I went to Wal-Mart and bought the j7 sky pro because it said it's powered by T-Mobile and that's my network. After powering on I was told my SIM wasn't valid. I googled the phone and learned about unlocking. So I went on YouTube to learn how only to discover that it's supposed to automatically show a screen asking for an unlock code. My phone however does no such thing. If I purchase an unlock code how do I enter it? It's really important because I have a 3 year old with special needs and in order to get to dr appointments for him we use uber but to install uber on my new phone I need a code to be sent via text and since my network is locked I can't receive texts. This could literally be a matter of life and death for my child. I can't afford another 100 dollar phone and without uber don't even have a way to get to a store to buy one. Any help would mean so much

Where did you get the bootloader ing to flash at?
Type #83865625# (#TFUNLOCK#) and it will prompt for the unlock codes. Yes codes. There should be two of them. As for root, I am working on it. Ive come pretty close already but don't wait for me to do all the work, go find the engineering system or engroot and post it.

Should I buy this carrier locked Pixel 3?

Hello everyone,
This is me posting for the first time here.
I've found a really cheap Pixel 3, but it is carrier locked to a Japanese carrier called Softbank. Is it possible to remove the carrier lock by rooting the phone? If not, what are the other options should I pursue to buy it?
With many regards,
Emir.

If it's carrier locked it's more than likely bootloader locked. If so, you can't root the phone and most likely can't do anything about the carrier lock. You could call the carrier and ask them if they'd unlock it or, That's about your only option I'd guess. Unless you can get in touch with the carrier and get them to unlock it, I'd stay away. Cheap or not, it's not worth a dime if you can't use it after you get it. Just my 2 cents worth.

I just know it is network locked to T-Mobile. The person I bought it from told me so. I had no idea it would be so difficult to unlock. If I did, I wouldn't have bought it. I would be glad to provide the specifics but you'll have to guide on what information you need.
Im in the same situation!! only got my imei, and the phone (clean, but i cant unlock it)
OK, AGameOP7 / Kamatron ... By "Locked/Unlocked", are you just referring to being locked to a carrier and required to use a T-Mobile SIM card?
Or, do you mean that you can't unlock the phone or can't unlock the bootloader?
If it is the former (my guess), T-Mobile is required by law to unlock your phone from being used on T-Mobile's network when the contractual commitments for the phone (usually, a one or two year contract) have been met by the original owner.
If you bought these used from friends/family, I would expect that they have paid the phone off by now. The OP7P is more than 2 years old now.
You should be able to just call up T-Mobile, and have them look up the IMEI in their records to see if your OP7P is able to be unlocked at this point, which it certainly should. However, if it isn't and the T-Mob CSR refuses to unlock the phone ... you have one more option available. With T-Mob, you can purchase a pre-paid SIM and have it on the T-Mobile network for a month or two to finish off any contractual commitments T-Mobile still requires. That would cost you money, but it could be a last-ditch solution if you need it.
