I'v been wondering if I could get an OTG cable, hook it up to a USB to Ethernet port, and use Ethernet. Could you guys let me know if its possible or would I have to root my device or download drivers or something. Thanks.

the entire point is to have a reliable wired connection. I don't know if the G3 can handle ethernet to usb.

As an IT professional, being able to plug into Ethernet ports would be kinda helpful.

usb > ethernet > usb
that would work... but what would be the point? the phone can tether over usb, but I suppose that's going on the other direction, perhaps what you're after is Internet Pass-through? I've seen this on HTC phones, so it's technically possible, but I'm going to guess it's built into the kernel, not a normal android option.

[Q] Trouble transfering files to the Xoom WiFi

I'm trying to transfer some mkv's over to the Xoom into the Movies folder. I'd like to try to play them in RockPlayer. However when I try to transfer the files, the prompt pops up saying the Xoom might not be able to play this type of file and do I want to continue. I hit continue and the transfer pops up but it never appears to transfer. Anyone have an issues like this?
Edit: I just tried transfering simple photo's over to the Xoom, I can't even transfer those. After waiting for the file to transfer it eventually pops up saying the device is either disconnected or unreadable.
There is a difference with WiFi vs.3G xoom. I had the Verizon version and returned it. purchased the wifi version today and noticed immediately that my app NBA game time doesn't work but it did on the Verizon version. Something is up but I can't say what was changed. GPS works but the app just closes when it is launched. So, stuck with watching the laker game on EVO.
Do you have the correct drivers installed?

yes, I made sure to reinstall them directly from motorolas website.
Well I think the problem was that I just used my HTC Micro USB cable since it was already plugged into the computer to transfer files to the Xoom. I started to think about it and since the HTC cable could be used to charge my EVO, perhaps it was the problem. I switched cables and it is now working without a hitch.
There is absolutely something odd and unique about the USB cable that comes with the 3G version. I can NOT use the one that came with my Nexus. Grrr.

Ugh. this is no better than having a proprietary cable...
I used my micro usb cable for my samsung captivate and it worked fine transferring files with the xoom.
I bought a 6ft Micro USB off of Monoprice and it works with my EVO and WiFi Xoom just fine.
I can mount the xoom wifi on my pc at work but can't mount it on my macbook pro. I have tried three different cables but no go. Is there something different for the mac other than plugging in?
You may have to fiddle with your settings in your system control panel... would be my guess for getting it working on a MacBook.
I used the micro usb from my thunderbolt and it works fine on my mac to xoom.. for mac, make sure you have the android file transfer software installed coz it wont recognize the xoom as an external drive.

I was having the same problem. I used the cable that came with the Xoom Wifi and everything is working now. Now i just have to make sure i don't get this cable mixed up with my other moto cables.
hi,
I can't download "android file transfer" from android.com in my country (weird google policy!). anyone knows an alternative or mirror link for download? I tried using VPN but somehow it detects I'm connecting from the same region!
thanks
I'm not really sure what that warning relates to. I can say that mkv playback on the zoom is pretty bad even using the handbrake profile that was floating around that creates flawless HD mp4s. With the same source I got audio outs within a few seconds on the mkvs and no problems with the mp4s. Avi files that had warnings played just fine.

does tiamat 1.4.2 support hotswapping of usb drives ??
Lots of these topics floating around. All looks the same after u connect a file/drive u have to reboot. Kinda sucks. Mice/controllers/keyboard not effected. I wish a dev would pop in and just say yes u have to reboot all the time or there can be a solution or something.

Are you sure you got an host cable? Do any other devices work with it? Like a mouse or controller.

first let me say thankyou brd , every mod I have done has come from your posts.
I am quite diligent and read everything I can before I flash or mod and even post in the forum , but , is there something I could have missed that causes me problems hotswapping usb drives , I am at a loss . .
thanks
Just an update on the need to reboot to access usbOTG. I got my official USB adapter today from Motorola. I have hot swapped 5 different drivers and sticks and it reads every time. Even my 250gb WD portable hard drive.

@ hoola
so did you have a grey otg cable and got the same results as others and I have got , and now you have the official host cable as is well ? am I correct ?
also exactly what are you running , and the route you took to get there , i.e. my route was
uk 3.01 , one click, tiamat as they came out untill 1.4.0 > BRD's cwm flashed 3.1 update > tiamat 1.6ghz with usbmass storage (thats not working too well for me)
thanks
I had a grey/clear generic cAble. I rooted using another method on another site then *redid* it using brd method . I just tried using the generic cAble and it does not read after first swap until reboot. With moto cable it sees all devices . I switched out like 20 times in a row with 5 or so devices (USB , external, USB card reader, few sticks) and it reads every time.

[Q] Internet connection with Ethernet to Usb adaptator

Hi everyone ! I have a simply question.
I just had my Transformer and I want to connect it to internet with an ethernet cable, but, there is no ethernet port on the Transformer.
I looked for that on forums and I didn't find anything.
So I want to know if it's possible to get back a wired connection via one of the usb port of the dock with an adaptator like the one attached, and if yes, how I can do it.
Thank you in advance !
Somebody did get this working (partially) with the Transformer. It's in the forums - please try searching again....

Wifi Dongle on Android Stick computers?

Is it possible to use a wifi dongle on an android stick computer? I found a thread about using 3g dongles on android tablets which I figured might also be possible on the stick computers, but nothing on wifi dongles. Thanks for any input.
Also, the android stick I'm using right now is an MK802-IV with AP6330 wifi.

You would need to have a driver and then write a wlan0.conf file and find some way for it to get recognized every time you reboot. Maybe you could put it in cron if that is a thing in the android world.
If the dongle drivers are already in the Linux kernel of the version of Android you want to use it with, it will work ootb. I'd just plug it in, if it works great, if not installing Linux drivers can be a pain in the butt! Make sure you disable the on board wifi first before trying the dongle.

USB tethering not working (but wifi hotspot okay)

I can't get usb tethering to work on my Pixel 2. I plug the cable into my laptop and enable it, but no wired connection ever appears to connect to. This works fine on my old Nexus 4 running Lineage OS.
Strangely, wifi hotspot on the Pixel 2 works fine.
But I'd rather use USB tethering. Any suggestions how to trouble shoot this?

Experiencing the same thing. USB tethering worked like a charm between my Pixel XL and Chromebook, but my Pixel 2 XL does nothing when I plug it in. Have you tried it after the November update? I haven't gotten a chance to yet.

Yes, I've got the November update and it still doesn't work.
This still seems to be an issue. Is there any solution?
Are you changing the USB connection type? By default it's set to No Data transfer. Try manually selecting USB tethering.

Wow, thank you for answering a four and a half year old question. Although, I don't actually see this setting on my phone, perhaps because the Pixel 2 is stuck on Android 11?
