Gumdrop Drop Tech case? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

Anyone have one of these? I'd like to use my tablet for my outdoor sports tournaments and have unpleasant memories of the Otterbox Defender on my Note 2...

This is the best you can get if you needed rugged.
I've got one for my Toshiba Thrive but don't need it for my Note 8.0.

I really want the screen protector; I've got one on the way now. Added plus it seems to be designed for the voice Note 8's (which I REALLY want!).

I've got a black one for my Thrive and love it but those candy colors are kind of cool.

I've got one on my note 8. I like it. The bulk is nice, I can grab and hold the note without touching the screen. I did get a bit tired of the screen protector. Touch and pen was fine, but hated the glare. I had the first Galaxy Tab in an Incipio case with an anti-glare screen protector on it and liked that. So I cut the screen protector out of the GumDrop and installed an anti glare protector. Now the unit is about perfect. The only thing I really miss is the ability to swipe from outside then screen.

I forgot about this!
I ordered the gumdrop case from Amazon and what arrived was a USED drop tech case in the gumdrop box! I was pretty ticked about that and probably should have returned it right away. I haven't used it at all- it was a poor fit and I hated the foam feel of it. Bleh.

Sounds like somebody decided they want to trade their drop tech case for bobj model. You really should return that as I'm sure you would be much happier with the bobj case.

Foam feel, poor fit? I think you got duped my friend. The Gumdrop case is tough rubber and fits perfect. I've dropped mine from 4ish feet in the dirt and rocks only to brush it off and keep going.
Sure the screen protector has glare but it does it's job.
My only complaint about this case is when I have to put a new SDmicro card in. That sucks.
I think you got a bunk case or someone swapped in some cheap crappy bobi case (JK - Probably some crap Chinese knockoff)

Otterbox Commuter or Case Mate Barely There?

I cant seem to decide which case to get. They both look like great cases. I am able to get the otterbox for only $10 more than the case mate barely there. I was hoping to get some input from any one who has tried one or both of them.
Things I am concerned about:
Case Mate barely there
- does it offer a better grip to the phone?
- is it hard to press the volume and power buttons with the case on?
Otterbox Commuter
- does it make the phone too bulky?
- is it worth the extra $10?
- how is the screen protector?
Thanks for any input provided.
I have a commuter on my Desire. Love it. Im not a big case fella. I ran my 9700 caseless. Dont like bulky. I find the desire almost too thin, and the OB adds just enough. Screen saver is nice. no complaints.
My only gripe is I find it doesnt have enough grip/texture on the back. its smooth plastic. too smooth imo.
Personally I'd look at the case mate Torque case if you don't want the otterbox.
I was thinking of the same thing " which one"
I have zagg invisible shield so case mate wasnt an upgrade for a protection so i bought a commuter, but it hasnt come yet

Thanks for your reply. I agree the desire is too thin that why I feel a need a case to provide a better grip. I used to have a Bold 9000 and I just used a pocket case with it. Im not too crazy about the torque dont really like the look of it and looks to bulky for me. Where did you purchase your otterbox? I am only able to find the otterbox online from gocellular.com. Cant find it locally.
Actually my local Telus store carries them.
See my review of the Tough Hyrbid by case-mate. it's my choice of the cases available.
To me the barely there is pointless as if you drop it your probably gonna ruin the phone anyways, the commuter is nice, but i think the Tough Hybrid is better. just my two cents.
The more I think about the more I'm leaning towards the otterbox. I found a local telus store that carries it. This way I can try it out and return it if I don't like it. Yeah the barely there does seem pointless especially for the price. Thanks everyone for your input.

Case Mate Barely There
Got a Case Mate Barely There on my desire and i love it !!
Why i bought the Case Mate Barely There?
- The stuff its made of is awesome.
- The phone fits it perfect and there is no chance its slipping out.
- Doesn't make the phone feel bigger.
- The buttons are perfectly cut out so they work as they should.
The Case Mate Barely There has basically zero impact protection...it'll help against scratches or whatever, but upon any drop or anything, your phone will be subject to whatever shock damage regardless.
I have the Otterbox Commuter, and I definitely recommend it. Slightly thickens and makes my Desire larger, but the silicone+plastic combination gives me a peace of mind. It'll give you good impact + shock protection.
CaseMate Barely There. Great case...
+1 for casemate barely there. Perfect fit and very high quality. I'm pretty careful with my phone so I don't need rock solid like the otterbox. I've dropped my phone before onto the floor without any damage at all. Chances are the phone is gonna hit one of the corners anyways.
still not shipped
Last I head the Commuter were backordered. Maybe try a local store?
I say go for the case-mate barely there
Sorry. Wrong forum.
otter box looks better for me

Otterbox Samsung Galaxy S Commuter case

The outer shell of the Galaxy S devices are essentially the same. I got the Otterbox Samsung Galaxy S Communter case at teh Amazonz for 24.95 - free 2-day shipping if you sign up for an Amazon Student account.
It fits the phone perfectly
Dammit! I bought mine on ebay for 26.25 shipped! forgot to check amazon! can't wait to get it, until then I'm super careful with it.
It also comes with 1 screen protector but I have never been impressed with the one's Otterbox supplies. I didn't apply it anyway because the screen on this phone can take a pretty good beating. Enjoy the case! I know I am!
Good to know it fits. I think I might upgrade to the 4G this week.

I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. I just ordered mine today, should be coming in tomorrow afternoon, perfect since I'll be heading into PAX east, and this baby was paid full price x.x; shouldn't ever go to a convention without a case..
it's a good case. the rubber has a tendency to be a lint magnet. but it will def protect your phone.
Got mine from TheCellGuru.com for 23.39 with shipping. I got the otterbox commuter for the 'Vibrant' though. Should be essentially the same since the only differences physically is the forward facing camera.
Not a bad pick up for a solid case to protect; as I am one clumsy SOB!
Order the i9000 version. Thats the one I got.

I saw a friend with an Otterbox and liked the grip, so I grabbed one.
I was disappointed to find out they dont make a "Defender" version for the Vibrant/S4G. That was the version my friend had on his Captivate which I liked more then the "Commuter". But the Commuter will suffice for now. Hopefully they release a defender series for ours.
I also didn't care for the screen protector that came with the Otterbox, so I didn't use it and just used the second realook protector I had from my Vibrant which works great.
don't waste money

Comparing the two, which one tends to attract dust more? (refering to the soft silicone part).
Thanks
Case mate only does on the silicone part, which isnt really much once the "hard" part covers the back.. mainly on on the top part where the headphone jack is, a quick milisecond wipe when it comes out of my pocket and no dust on the entire phone. Hopefully that description helps.
Otherwise none at all. Refering to the case mate of course.

Yeah, I looked everywhere for the Defender version but settled for the Commuter.
I haven't had many problems with dust on my Otterbox but for those that are, Just wipe it with any microfiber cloth (even old jogging pants refashioned as a dust rag works) and it wipes it clean in seconds.
The only thing is the dust/lint gets in the cut outs for the ffc and ear piece. If your going to use the ffc, which isn't that often, you have to clean that out.
Is anyone else noticing that it seems like the soft part is getting a little loose after awhile? I've had this one since they first released them for the vibrant. It seems like, especially at the top, you can squeeze the edge's in and it buckles up.
That being said, this is the best case I've ever owned. I like how it has the soft rubber touching the phone so you don't get any wear spots on it. Then the hard plastic protects and keeps it from getting stuck in your pocket.

Otterbox Commuter v. Incipio DualPro v. Seidio Active

Hello all,
I've always only had the Otterbox Commuter as my one and only case for phones, and with them being so slow to get out the color I want for the S4, I was wondering if I should keep waiting for a bit longer or go with another choice like the Incipio DualPro or Seidio Active. I don't have any experience with either of them, so I'm wondering if anyone who has used them can shed some light (both good and bad) on them.
Thanks.

Incipio Dual Pro is horrible. Fitment is off and constantly slips on an end, exposing the screen with no lip coverage. Luckily it was free from the ATT store for me, but i wish i chose a different case from them. I ended up ordering a minimalist JL case from amazon anyway.
I have an Incipio case and I think it's great. Probably the best case I've had for a phone. Only like $25 too.

Consider having a look see at the Casemate Toughcase if you like the otterbox, its actually less bulky while providing better protection for the phone. I'm very surprised this case doesn't see more play here becuase its a truly good case and I get people asking my out of the blue what it is and where I purchased it. I've got probably a dozen friends on it now and I did nothing to convince them, they mauled and pawed at the case for a few and were sold. If you are of a mind you can quickly pull up a few reviews on youtube of the case.
I've been using the Seidio Active case for a few days now. I used a 10% off coupon I found searching Google and it came out to $31 shipped. I bought the one with the grooves for your fingers. Also has a kickstand. I pull out the kickstand when holding the phone and put my ring finger under the kickstand so I have a good hold of the phone and my thumb can reach more of the screen. Kickstand also comes in handy with the smart stay option so the screen won't turn off when I'm reading. It is easy to take on and off so I can get to the battery easily. All the proper cut outs are there and are lined up perfectly. Complaints - When typing or pushing the menu / back key my fat fingers will hit the edge of the case. I just have to work on using the tip of my thumb. Depending on the angle of the phone you may not be able to see the notification light. There are covers for the volume and power button which took some getting used to but I can now hit them without looking.

How well does that case work with a glass screen protector?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I have the Incipio Dual Pro Carbon now as my temporary case. The rubber is constantly coming off from around the lip. You see the silver when this happens. Not a huge deal but in a drop it won't be that good. Also the silicone grabs a little bit of lint.
Seidio active... I have it on my Nexus 7 and had it on my Note 1.... Huge lint magnet, OLD OLD design, silicone can be warped and won't lay flat in some areas.
Otterbox Commuter.... I will order one of the colored models when available. Buttons were terrible on the S3 but it seems to have an improved design....Putting the case on seems to be better than the S3... Overalll good design.
I also ordered the Cygnett Workmate... It seems to cover the issues from the other case and offers better grip... I will know in a couple of weeks.

The edges of the case do come over the top of the device to the screen side but this is only the softer inner portion of the case and I'm thinking it would work fine but I do not use screen protectors so I'm not certain. You can see it pretty clearly in some of the youtube videos of the case so you should be able to make a call from that. A link is here ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l3X7Oxgx5I and the same fellow reviews several others which might catch your interest as well.
I've included a couple pictures that show something you cant see there. The one is of my year old S3 case next to my brand new S4 case. Notice how the thing still looks new? The other seems like kind of an oddball picture but what you are looking at is the largest portion of the soft inner case and the thing to notice there is the lack of lint. While these do catch a tiny bit of lint it is very little as you can see there. I did not clean the case up, it went from my pocket to the drawer after my S4 got here.
On my S3 I have had my phone in that case directly alongside a friend who had his in a commuter case and we both agreed that this case felt better in the hand and it had a more premium feel. It also has better grip but does not hang in the pocket. He in fact is one of the people I know who ditched his case and got the Casemate instead. Now I've obviously not seen the Otterbox for the S4 yet but it appears much like the Casemate counterpart to be pretty much a rehash and I would expect that they will compare similarly again.

I bought mine (Dual Pro) at a TMob store. I totally disgaree regarding overlapping screen. It TOTALLY protects the screen via it's superb fit overlapping. Plus it has a nice "feel just holding it'. Used to have a Body Glovefor my S3. The bodyglove was on the thick side and it just didn't have the same tactile feeling when holding the phone. Mine is black with Grey...IOW two tone. Only saw it in a TMob store. Solid colors online from this link.

Man, that is some kind of funky back they have there. How does it feel? What is it?
And you said that Casemate offers better protection than the Commuter, any links to vids/proof to this? Cause if that's true, then that's a great deal. It looks like it is as bulky as the DualPro. Lastly, how are the colors with the Casemate? Got sick of all black, and that's why I've been looking elsewhere while waiting for the Commuter colors. Thanks.
Incipio DualPro
I purchased my Incipio DualPro from an AT&T store ($35 + tax) just to have something to protect the phone while I figure out what I really want as far as a case. I went in to get the cheapest thing they had but really liked the look of the fake carbon fiber which looks even better in person. But, the silicone layer is so loose and floppy that even with the stiff Plextonium frame:laugh:, it won't hold its shape leaving the bezel exposed where the fancy named frame isn't. This case had the makings of a winner.
Love this look:
Hate this:
Returned to AT&T store today!
The outer shell is plastic. It has the appearence of the knurling you see on a ratchet handle for example. In person it looks good and has a better feel than that of the Otterbox counterpart. The bulk of the case is about the same as the commuter, it is designed for protection and those who would avoid the Otterbox commuter for that reason would want to avoid it as well. That said it is slighly less bulky than its commuter counterpart because it is thinner.
As to protection there are no sure proofs, no 1000 phones dropped and here is the absolute numbers, test. You have to look at the case and make a judgement. The casemate clearly covers the corners better and has a better fit which combined with what are visibly better materials means you can pretty much figure your phone has a better chance than it does in the commuter. There is no sure thing. I had my S2 and then S3 both in the same case for those phones and while I haven't dropped the S4 yet I did have occasion to drop both of those several times and neither suffered a scratch although again no case will protect against bad luck.
In regards to the colors, I've no idea. I always go black so have never looked. Best bet might be to check the case out in a store. Its popular enough that I noticed our AT&T shop here had some on the shelf for S3s. Or if you have a case kiosk at the mall they will likely have one and you can check out the material yourself. Casemate has many other cases but I have no experience with them. I was Otterbox all the way till I ran into the toughcase which just plain out commuters the commuter at its own game. IMO
Looking at the dimensions of all the products, it looks like Casemate is the bulkiest, with Otterbox second, and Incipio DualPro the least bulkiest.
The one thing I'm not a fan of the Casemate from the pictures is that there seems to be more open exposed areas, especially at the top.
I ordered the Dual Pro case and have been waiting for it to come in.... I bought the Body Glove Dimensions case from the T-Mobile store just to have something on it until the Dual Pro case came in...The Dual Pro case looked really nice in the store but I want the white and gray one that they didn't have.. Now I'm hearing all the crappy reviews about the Dual Pro case and I'm having buyers remorse...Maybe I will get one from a good batch that will fit like a glove...UNLIKELY!!!! Anyway the Body Glove Dimensions case feels really good in my hand and looks nice however it doesn't protect anything just nice and slim.

Im not sure where you are getting your dimensions from but I can tell you from actually having both in my hand with the S3 the toughcase is slimmer. Since it appears that the Commuter is a reboot with a few minor changes just as the toughcase is for S4 I'm pretty sure you are going to see the same thing again. Also the only openings on the tough case are where the IR and headphone jacks are and the same applies on the bottom where there is no opening other than the two ports there. The Otterbox possesses exactly the same openings in their case and then unlike the otterbox the casemate piece does not have the wide open corners which are the single most likely spot for the phone to hit in a drop.
lol Sometimes you just cant let a favorite go, I do it myself. Either way you're getting a good case that stands a real chance of saving your overpriced ludicrously profitable for Samsung device so its all good. :good:

You do have to remember that those that have problems are usually the ones that take to online to complain, so just take all the amount of bad stuff with a grain of salt.

:silly: I think on the corners, they both go about it differently, Otterbox has the silicone there, and casemate has both, with the plastic outside. Bet they both have their own science reasons for doing it that way lol.
I'll wait it out a little while longer before deciding. I think my biggest concern about the casemate is that I won't like how the textured back feels.

I had the Otterbox Defender for the Note 2, and it was fabulous... the confidence knowing that the phone is protected.
The Otterbox Defender for Note 8 is tempting but the cost is too much so I am considering the Poetic Evolution at half the cost....
http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Revolution-SamSung-Manufacturer-Warranty/dp/B00BQ2Y0O8/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt
Experience with the OD on the N2 says it does not cover the pen hatch nor the home button (also like the pics for the N8 version), where lots of dirt collects under the screen, but the PE covers everything giving more protection.
Did you do the comparison before you bought the OD?
I did not see the poetic one, looks like a decent case does it have the front snap on cover like the OD? The only other case I used was the Samung folio cover and it really doesnt offer any protection at all. I have used Otter Box in the past and they have never let me down.

I've Gone NAKED!!!!!!!!

I bought a leather backed MX14 and then what did I do? I bought a bumper and 2 cases for it. Why? Because I didn't want to scratch it, lol! Stupid I know.
Then today I was taking the Incipio NGP case off to put the Case-Mate Hula bumper on so that I could at least feel the leather and I scratched the leather back with my nails. I gasped in horror but really it is a good thing b/c now it is not pristine and I can wean myself off of these cases.
The leather is really a nice feel in the hand and it isn't slippery at all. The metal frame is a bit slippery but with the grip of the leather it is not too bad.
I think I may buy a sleeve to put it in when it is in my purse.
The leather is really cool and well worth the extra $25 but the black is so unfeminine. I like it when I am dressed up in black clothes but other than that, it looks like a man's phone. I wish they would do a white leather but then, that would likely get dirty so they would get a bunch of complaints.
I think I will get this sleeve

I wish Sena Cases would make cases for the MX14. I would love a real leather wallet.
Just be careful not to drop it ?

Oh no, is that yours?
I bought the MotoCare policy so if I do drop it, I can get a refurb for $39.
I was kinda more tempted by this one

But the sleeve you show seems cool too!

Yup, that was my issue. I started with the phone naked for the same reason mentioned above (feel in hand, looks, etc.). I've also had both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 before this, both of which survived multiple drops each other than a slight bend in the metal. With the Moto X, on the other hand, I dropped it once onto a granite floor and the screen broke instantly. I bought a replacement and kept it naked...then dropped it again on some linoleum and broke the screen again. $240 in replacement fees later, I bought a case for the third one. The way the screen is set up makes it break instantly upon hitting a corner, which wasn't the case with my previous devices...I just don't trust this phone to survive any drop.
Yep, looks like motocare is a good investment in this case. Mine was a less than 2 foot drop from my pocket to the concrete steps in the garage. My old Galaxy S3 survived worse than that, in fact this is the first time I've had a screen crack since owning the original Galaxy S, and my phones are always naked. Worst before was dropping my Note from chest height onto dirt trail. All that did was pockmark the screen.
Speaking of naked, we have no proof the OP is actually going naked. So far I've only seen mention of a naked phone

It was $90 after sales tax for me and the deductible being only $39 would bring the cost of a new phone to $140. Even if my phone doesn't break, I am sure I will use it for a new battery when it gets close to the 2 year mark as I use my phone for WiFi MHS and that takes a toll on the battery. By then of course I will have a MX16 but it is still good to have spare phones as a backup device in case you lose your phone.

hahahahahaha, I am going to take some pics of my naked phone soon along with the cases I bought. I have a small dent in the leather now and haven't scratched it again, not bad. I do keep it in a Seidio spring clip holster (S5), so technically it is not naked. I guess I couldn't wean myself completely from my cases but the back is naked!
I really like the Hula Bumper. I bought it after the phone slipped out of my hand. I agree the metal is rather slick. A full case is a bit much considering I want to see and feel the wood on the back of my phone. That was one of the main reasons I picked it up.

Hey! Did you receive your fitBAG sleeve?
I didn't like the Dodocase , not slim enough in my opinion so I also bought a fitBag, waiting for it

I have not received it yet, but I haven't checked my mail in a few days so I need to do that. I actually forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me!
