[Q] Low Microphone volume - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I noticed my Moto G LTE microphone volume is pretty low in Whatsapp, Recording apps and in calls. Other devices are much louder and clear (I tested against the SGS2 and SGS3) anyone facing this problem too or is my device broken?
I found using the QCATest app that the DEAFULT MIC (one used for all the mentioned above) has vey low volume but none background noise, PRIMARY MIC on the other hand, has little background noise but much better volume. I guess it's a software issue regarding the background voice cancellation mechanism? can anyone confirm this?

Not a single comment?
Please let me know if you have this problem or not. I don't know If I should contact Motorola and get my device replaced.
Thanks

A friend of mine is reporting a similar problem on calls - callers claim they can't hear well. I'm trying to figure out what is going on.

Bump...
No one noticed the low volume compered to other phones?
Please post your feedback

If you have a scratch guard them try removing it.
If it's not the problem, contact Motorola.

I only have a tempered glass which doesn't cover the mic hole.
I tried contact Motorola via their forums, no luck yet. I can try to send the device for "repair" but the waiting time will be too long (I don't have official support from Motorola in my country) and with problems like this, they might just send the device back to me claiming there is no problem at all.
I already found few people with this problem too but not a straight answer on this.

If Cm11, try bass boost

If you're using CM11, try enabling bass boost in the DSP settings.

I'm using stock rom 4.4.4 no root
I guess I should replace my phone as no one is seems to be having this issue.
Edit: If someone can post a sample recording from a supposedly normal device for me to compare I would appreciate this very much. Thanks

Can anyone actually point a recording app that they using and works good with the Moto G (as you can put your phone in the desk and speak at normal level and being able to hear ok)?

No one have a word on this? Although I found that the volume in the camera recording is much better it's still very far behind basically any other phone.

I have the same problem only apps that works fine is when I'm recording on Vine, but Instagram, the Camera App, Snapchat all have very very low mic volumes

[APP] Earpiece: boost audio, play through earpiece

I wanted an app to play audio through a phone earpiece, so that if I didn't take my headphones somewhere, I could still listen to an audio book as if I was on the phone. So I made a very simple app that toggles whether sound comes from the earpiece or the speaker: Earpiece.
Currently alpha, or maybe early beta, quality. Works on my Epic 4G Touch. Don't know how many other phones it'll work for. (Interestingly, I also noticed that if I have earphones plugged in and I select earpiece mode, then the volume goes up a little. I am curious if this happens for other users)
I also wanted an app that would let me boost the audio volume, so I added that functionality to Earpiece while I was at it (Android 2.3+ only, should work even on devices like tablets that don't have an earpiece). I know there are such apps (Volume+ seems to be the most popular one), but why have a separate app for this?
You can set Earpiece to show up when you long-press the search key. (I don't use this feature myself. Instead, I have another simple app that pops up a menu of my favorite apps when I long-press the search key, and I use that to launch Earpiece.)
Free and open source (BSD license).

With what settings in Earpiece?
I would expect the Boost setting to interfere with DSP Manager, since both apps would be trying to do the same thing.

Thanks! Tell me more. How did you test it?
Here's how I test. I start an audio book playing in Mortplayer, and then go to Earpiece, and toggle the Earpiece checkmark.
Clever idea, thanks!
Works perfectly on my HTC EVO 3D ICS 4.0.3 leak, boost as well - even the feeble speaker becomes louder
Cheers
Christoph
Works perfectly on ZTE Blade.

It looks like the person on the other end of the line is just talking your ear off and not letting you get a word in.
Question: Should I activate the proximity sensor in Earpiece mode, and turn the device screen off and on based on closeness to the face?

I just posted 0.02 with proximity sensor support.
Screen off while close to face is default for phone calls on my htc, saves lots! of battery during long talks.
So, yes, please
Workaround so far: With screen off manually (power button), sound plays nicely in the background.
Thanks and Cheers!
EDIT: Too fast for me Thanks again!

Did this happen with the previous version?
Can you send me a log after the crash? Install Log Collector, then do the crash again, and then go to Log Collector to email the log to arpruss at gmail dot com.
My ICS has a not stable beats installed, deactivated it, now works flawless
Noticed that the "Volume up/down" beeps don't get routed through earpeace, which is fine with me. Probably, because it's not a media volume sound?
Cheers!
Work on zte blade, but is it possible to use earpiece + speaker in same time?

You mean, for greater volume?
I doubt it, but I can experiment and see. Might actually be hard to tell if it's working, because the earpiece speaker will be drowned out by the main speaker.
I just posted 0.03.
It switches to the earpiece using a slightly different method. I'd appreciate reports whether it works for people.
By the way, no luck routing audio to BOTH the speaker and the earpiece at the same time.
I posted a release in the Market.
The release version carries one text ad on the screen, for my paid products. If the ad annoys you, just buy any of my paid products and the ad will disappear. Or just use a pre-release version.
Cool thing I found. If you turn on Earpiece while in Camera, the camera sound gets routed to the earpiece, and hence is very quiet, at least in my Epic 4G Touch.
(I know there are root-based solutions to the camera sound issue, but I haven't rooted my phone yet--I haven't found a way to do it that's both safe and doesn't involve copyright problems, like downloading unauthorized copies of parts of ROMs.)
I posted 1.01 in the Market and on the google code page. If you press MENU, you can go to Settings and select whether you want the status bar notification always, only when the background service is running, or never. The "never" is attractive if you don't like clutter, but unfortunately it allows the OS to kill Earpiece's proximity sensor and boost features (they need the background service) when the OS runs out of memory. Still, it's up to the user.
I am kind of excited by my discovery that earpiece mode makes the camera sound come out of the earpiece and hence be very quiet. I've experimented some more, and when I combine this with a negative volume boost, I can make the camera sound almost inaudible--probably inaudible to anybody more than two feet away except in an almost perfectly silent environment. Of course, for rooted devices there are ways of turning it off entirely, but I don't have root, and I want to be able to take pictures without disturbing people.

Many have used lgcamera from the market for this. It records in mono but sound is better, you can set to aac, 320kbs. Also you can select the bitrate for video. This is what I've done, while not a solution it works.
You may also want to try taking a look at the 'tuning system wide volume' thread in the themes and apps section. While the thread is mostly about boosting the overall volume of the phone, there is a mention of lowering the mic gain. If you have success with that, please report back with it.
I have used that thread to actually lower the headphone out gain, to get rid of some of the hiss one hears on music playback with low impedance earbuds.
Hope this helps.

WhatsApp Voice Message Audio Leak to Louder Speaker

When listening to a WhatsApp Voice Message via earpiece (i.e. proximity sensor) and another message arrives or any other notification, the audio is routed to the louder speaker for few seconds (length of notification audio) then routed back earpiece. So everybody around will hear that audio message.
This is extremely annoying is privacy disaster . Is it happening anyone ? Does anyone know how to solve?
Phone: Xiaomi Mi 5
All roms are affected (even AOSP ROMs)
i face this problem too. i feel that it is not whatsapp's problem but how the firmware handles notifications itself. i may be wrong though
Any thoughts of this guy's?
I have the exact same problem on my Nexus6P for a while. I'm not sure, but I think since I bought it. The same happened to a friend of mine with his Nexus5X. Haven't been able to solve it yet.
My only workaround is to react quickly to take the phone off my ear and resume the audio once the notification ringtone has finished playing.
no luck so far? I wonder how is this tolerated by millions of users? it's quite annoying :crying:
Sound
I got this problem too, but only in LineageOS builds, and I've reported this to the developer of my ROM (Moto G4 Play - Harpia) and he didn't understand the issue. On Pixel Experience ROM there ir no such a problem.

Low mic incall!

So when in call the microphone is very low and the other party can barely hear you even when volume is maxed but when switched to speakerphone works perfectly.. I've seen online it's a common problem for the s7.. Anybody have similar experience or a fix? And installing various sound mods didn't help either
do you use voWifi?
No I don't..

Mic problem during calling

Anyone having mic problem with P40 pro during the call? The other side cannot hear me when I use normal mode to talk. But when I turn on the speaker it is fixed and they can hear me well. Is it hardware ot software problem? Mine is 10.1.0.154.
It is annoying. I have tried factory reset, safe mode and still having the problem.
But it seems fine in whatsapp and messenger call though.
Please help me.

I just want to know that it is software or hardware issue. Because this is very annoying.
Try to go in Support app and then at Troubleshooting...one of those options from there should test mic also as I remember.

Hello, has your microphone returned to normal?
I have the same problem, the call works well on the speaker because it uses the upper microphone. But the bottom microphone has a very low volume, making the other person not hear the voice on calls.
That's what I deduced from the tests and the support app. I'm afraid of being a hardware problem, I recently purchased the smartphone.
The microphone appears to be wet or dirty.
