[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 5 or Wait and get Moto X+1 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to wait for the Moto X+1 but fear that my carrier will not get it (It never got the original moto x). Yes I know they have very similar specs but I have a big gripe with the N5's camera. It kinda sucks, I tried it out on my friends nexus 5 and didn't like it but I love everything else about about the nexus minus the speaker which I can live with. The moto x+1 is reported to have a 12 or 13 megapixel camera which is probbably gonna be a lot better but Idk if I can rely on my carrier.

It may have been moved from general.
Anyway, we're not making the OP's mind up. Thats his job.

This is the section the OP was moved to. And yes, I understood the question.

IMO the N6 will be out soon so you can get a new phone for the same price in a couple months. Also the other vendors undoubtedly will release something so it depends on what you want. This is a good phone and the new hardware isn't much faster than what we got yet and the only advantage would be a bigger screen.

As a former moto x owner the moto x camera was actually inferior to nexus 5 camera, the advantage the moto has over the nexus is battery longevity. As for disadvantages the moto had was development, if you are a flasher by very cautious on any moto product, the moto boot loader is a pain and flashing ota's caused more hard bricks than I can shake a stick at, I'm not exaggerating at all. Just keep in mind if you're on either Verizon or AT&T keep away from the moto as you will not be able to unlock the bootloader.
Also the back on the moto x is made of inferior material and will crack and split , I had multiple hairline cracks and a chunk break of just below the volume buttons

[Opinions] Wait for nexus 6 or get the new Moto X

I'm curious who all is gonna get either the new moto x, or wait on the nexus 6
to replace the n5?
I'm considering the X if Motorola surprises us with a 64gb model soon, but I'm just looking for some feedback.

Yeah I think I'll wait on the 6 after doing some more reading, its just that the new X does look kinda sexy. I just hope google decides to offer 64gb of storage as that's my deciding factor.
Probably neither

While the X is an excellent device with great moto features, if it's anything like the original moto x... There will be very little Development for it. So if you like to flash roms and whatnot... I doubt the X would be for you.
Also, Verizon, AT&T and Republic wireless don't allow you to unlock the bootloader... Assuming it's the same as the original x again, so you won't be modifying it at all if you get one of those carriers phones.
If you don't care about flashing things, the X would be an excellent device.

I never realized there wasnt much Dev for it, but I'm happy with an unlocked boot loader, paranoid android, and a good kernel, so I think I'm gonna wait till November for the new nexus then.
Thanks for the input peoples.
I am just thinking I don't think Motorola making the nexus 5 2014 edition because it's 2k display so I think lg making the new nexus. Probably the 5.9 inch nexus Motorola making .

On standby I barely get 12 hours with my 5, SOT is usually around 3-4. When I first got it back in march it lasted around 6-7 hours.

Yea if you ask Nexus 5 users on XDA high chance that you will find us wanting to get the new nexus over anything else. Moto X is tempting but not when you consider the price and the fact that some of its great features will be in L.

Nexus 5 and Moto X (I gen) Modding

Hi, first of all sorry for my english.
I am undecided for my next smartphone between Moto X (I gen) and Nexus 5.
I see the Moto X (I gen) like a Nexus 5, but smaller with more compact size.
I want ask you one thing without consider the display, the camera, the CPU, etc.. only the Modding side of this two smartphone (Custom ROM, Kernel, MOD, Xposed Modules, ...)
What are the things i can do (Modding) with a Nexus 5 that i can't do with a Moto X (I gen)?
Thank you very much for your answer.
* I post the same thread in the Moto X forum.
Lots more development on N5 as even 10 year old children can compile AOSP roms. It is easier to create your own rom on nexus 5. Thats it really.
Longevity of custom software as well. Nexus 5 development will probably continue for a lot longer than Moto's X (2013).

I'm not convinced on this. Nexus devices historically only seem to offer official support for 18 months. However that said, The Nexus 4 looks to be getting lollipop...
But once a Nexus drops official support, it becomes as difficult as every other phone to develop for once they too have dropped support. If the Nexus 5 finishes with L, there will be no official drivers for M which will make M development really difficult.
I think the Nexus 5 support period for official releases is unknown so it's hard to say with any certainty that we'll get greater longevity.
I know, but i am afraid that the N5 is too big than the Moto X

Oh plz Nexus 6 [email protected] says hi.
My wife has my X now and I had an N5.
To me they are very similar in most categories. Tho I'd say the X is the slightly better phone overall.
So, want a great phone, smaller than the 5 " plus phones and has unique Moto features...... Get the X.
Want a bigger and great phone too... With far more Development.... Get the N5.
Yes, Development on the X is very limited. And you gotta watch... You get a Verizon, at&t or Republic wireless... You may not get root or be able to unlock the bootloader... So no custom recovery.
Up to you in the end. Not much else can be said here really. They are very evenly matched.

I do not think you would be making a mistake buying the OPO. The possibly only issues you might have are regarding service and a yellow stripe near the bottom but I have read that there are easy work-abouts for that. The features, feel, OS, build quality, performance are all superb.I have had a Samsung S2, S4 and Moto G (2013) and I am thrilled to have this. Also the battery life is superb - now down to 10% with over 46 hours since last charge and screen time of 5h 15m, 45 minutes voice calls and nearly 19 hrs Wifi on.
You should get the OPO, hands down. Most of the issues people have had with the device aren't even relevent anymore, as they have been fixed in software updates months ago. And I'm pretty sure that stuff like the yellow line doesn't even appear in the hardware anymore, and was only apparent in the first couple months. So you can safely ignore those complaints.
If you're comparing the Moto X and the OPO, be aware that the OPO actually has slightly superior specs. But, you know, that's not the best thing about this phone.
The OPO's XDA development scene is, in my opinion, the best thing about this device. Soooo many important developers have adopted the OPO as their next device, like FranciscoFranco and AK. You will see a lot of pleasantly suprised people in the forums, saying things like, "I remember you from the Nexus 4!" and, ”Yay, xxxx is here!”. No other recent device has the same support. Hell, the Moto X forums are a barren wasteland.
If you get an OPO, be prepared to have a lot of fun on the XDA forums. I know I am.
It is worth it. I would buy again.

I'd wait. You've got a OnePlus One, and I can't imagine you (or anyone) being dissatisfied with its performance and requiring something that's "more". If you just want something new/different to play with, grab an LG G2; they're unbelievably cheap now, and still one hell of a phone. Or a 2013 Moto X, for when you don't want a big ol' slab flopping around in your pocket.

Hello, eefo.
XDA-Developers is a good place, to get help to buy a phone, but there's a famous thread, where there's a high chance, to get help from some members.
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/slow-motion-phones-device-how-to-imo-t2998500
EDIT: Nookie has already mentioned the thread... Sorry, haven't seen your post.
But what your phone you want, depends on your preferences.
Features
Screen Size
Design
Price
User Interface
Specifications
anything else
What are your preferences?

Who's thinking about getting a Z?

Looks very tempting to me. I've always liked the Moto X line and the added features it brings. I kind of like the JBL module too. I'm going to keep my eye on this phone until the end of the year and make a decision. It's probably going to be between the Z, OnePlus 3, and the new Nexus.
I will think about it below $400.

I've recently moved over to an iPhone with my wife. I still have a handful of the newer Android phones, but the Moto Z doesn't really pique my interest like the One Plus 3 does. Then again I'll probably wait for the next Nexus and see what happens with that.

Come on over to the Moto Maxx forums, we have CM13 and Resurrection Remix being actively maintained
---------- Post added at 03:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:34 PM ----------
As for what I think of the Z:
They need a much larger selection of modules if they want to make an impact on the market, and they need to continue making phones that support these mods.
I don't plan on buying one right now, simply because I'm in college and don't have money to throw at new phones... but if this Droid Turbo (Verizon's "special" Moto Maxx) breaks, the Moto Z is high on the list. I've always had Motorola phones and I haven't had any reason to look elsewhere yet
Im really thinking about it. I currently have an LG g3, Samsung galaxy s4 and Samsung galaxy s5. The g3 have good memory ram management, but it has an IPS screen (which is good: no image burn like in amoled; and bad: no as bright as Amoled screen). The s4 is okay but ram managment is not as good as LG G3, the same with the S5, however, both have Super amoled screen ( which is good: very bright screen; and bad: it might develop burn in image if not careful). sooo the moto z/z force has 4 GB or Ram , and have Amoled screen. It also have sd card slot, and it might not only be limited to those modules. The LG G5 was my first option, but this one seems to be less prone to have built quality issues, unlike LG g5. but i'm also having my eye on Project Google Ara, but that one will be for 2017. Still, i think the modular design of Moto Z/Z force is one that can be truly called a modular phone. there is no need to remove battery (it is impossible anyway) to use the modules. in addition to that good amount of mAh it comes with by default (at least the Z force. So chances are 70% that i will buy this one over the g5

Aaah yess. I mean. I could use it without root but having root always makes it a lot better. Although, the modularity part would be a little tricky if custom roms are released. Something tells me that there is more to it than just "plug and play" or in this case, attatch. But... I think they will release the tools (or make it open to the public so they can come up with ideas for new modules) this will make it easier i think
Price
This might be a rumor but if this rumor happens then... Well, It will be a better deal than the LG G5. According to this website: https://motog3.com/moto-z-moto-z-force-moto-mods/
The price for the Moto Z will be $499 dollars, and for the Moto Z Force $549. If this happens to be true, then I like the way they raised the price just a couple of bucks more for the Z force unlike other devices which raise up to $200 bucks more for a better version let's say. Anyway, I've posted a picture of what it says.
I hope those prices hold, but on Verizon with Droid slapped on them I kind of doubt it.

As someone who loved their moto x pure edition, but shattered the phone on space mountain (disneyland)... I've been holding out for the new moto x announcement. Instead we got the Moto Z announced in it's place, while it seems cool... it seems to sacrifice quite a few features I really enjoyed and I'm concerned about losing. Particularly the audio jack, I'm also worried about the longevity of the hold of these magnetic mod plates... I'm in a bit of a bind, I can't really keep using my friend's old bind, but i'm unsure if I'll want the moto Z at this point (although it looks pretty awesome). I'm debaiting on picking up another moto x pure since they're on sale right now and giving away a free moto 360 sport which I wouldn't mind playing around with. What are your guy's thoughts?

If the audio jack is a problem for you, and you loved the Pure Edition so much, I'd say get it again now since you do get the free smartwatch. However keep in mind that it's the Sport, which is the worst of their smartwatches, and the Pure Edition is near it's end of life, especially considering Moto's recent history...
