[Q] downgrade to HTC sense 4 - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hello Everybody,
Im having a very frustrating experience. I just had my htc one x replaced by at&t after damaging the screen. I actually bought a new screen to put it on myself but when I was expressing nervousness about installing it (despite doing it fine before on a previous device) somebody else in my family called at&t and bought me a $99 replacement using the replacement plan as a present and a favor. It's the same exact physical phone as my old one, but things are different on it, and I don't like it. I figured out the issue is that the phone came shipped with HTC sense version of atleast 5 (found this by googling pics) while my old phone had 4. I like 4.. not 5.
Don't even get me started on why. Biggest thing is changing from 5 or 6 home pages to scroll through to only 3. I loved having the space. I never even used the app menu, haha.
Of course, looking it up now this seems to be a pain. Ive been sitting here for hours and this data is so hard to get through because of HTCs airheaded desicion to have 6 different phones with the same name. I feel like im going insane with contradictory info and google just not delivering due to the confusing names. I keep getting info for the desire x, too.
My main question is: I have an at&t htc one x and I need to downgrade to sense version 4. How do i do it, and can somebody point me to the correct video (preferred) or thread for this task for my phone? I don't care how much of a pain it is I will figure it out. I'm also terrified I can't do it because I've been hearing rubbish about the at&t version of this phone...
Im so frustrated. Isn't android based on linux? So why is everything so closed and proprietary? Open source being used to make money and force people to have one version of a program? Not having control over what I have on my device and being able to customize it how I choose to the point where I am forced into a new version of software I don't like? Oh and not to mention that I can't uninstall facebook and twitter which I don't use. I hate this. I loved my phone but this is making me so angry. This is the exact thing I HATE about certain electronics. I want to have things how I want them, it's mine. I'm picky. I like customizing all my things and having them to suit me. I'm a control freak with computers.... end rant.
Thank you very much for any help,
Nichyun

I dont think you quite understand how android works. You dont need to use the Sense homescreen if you dont want to. Install Nova Launcher (or any launcher) from the Play Store and you can customize it however you want. Theres no way to downgrade Sense without rooting. As for uninstalling Facebook and Twitter, you should be able to "disable" them in Settings>Apps. If you truly want an open experience with Android, you will have to root and install CyanogenMod, PA, SlimKat or one of the many other custom ROMs available. However, it is not something you can just follow a simple video to do. I'm not even sure the latest AT&T software is rootable. Someone else will have to chime in there.

I really dont get it, I guess thats why i posted here, ill admit that. Thanks for the info... I'll look into all of that. I don't want to try to root the phone though, I' rather get used to it, I suppose. I dont want to mess it up, not worth it. It is frustrating to me that I cant delete certain apps because they're really big and there is no sd card slot in this phone so I run out of memory. I feel like facebook and twitter is everywhere it pushes itself on people which bothers me...
I guess this question could be considered answered because I figured out I dont want to do it any more.

Apps installed on the phone do not take up your main phone storage. There are two separate disk partitions. The first one is ~2GB and holds your OS and applications. The second is ~10GB and holds your pictures, videos, external app data etc. Thats what an SD card would add on to if we had one. Installing more apps (that don't have extra parts, games often do for example) won't take up anymore of that space though. (however it is possible to install apps to the SD card) Anyways, like I said you can go into settings and "disable" any apps you don't want to show up in the app drawer anymore.

1st Gen Touch Diamond and Touch Pro Owners..Petition HTC.

The new Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 were announced today, to include an updated version of the Touch Flo 3D software functionality. It gives the ability to move / remove / rename the Touch Flo Tabs, reorganize your programs on the program tab and even add additional programs once the initial ones are full plus a lot more.
Overall the new Touch Flo 3D is giving you the ability to get to the applications you use the most a lot quicker then what we can do now. The device is no more powerful then our 1st Gen devices as far as storage capacity is concerned and uses the same processors, so it should be non issue for them to roll out an update to our software.
Everyone should be going to http://www.htc.com and petitioning them starting now, requesting that they make the new Touch Flo 3D software available to us 1st Gen owners.
My phone is not even a month old, and to see them fix what is broken about the current gen software and not offer it to us would be flat out wrong. Even Apple offered the new software to their customers for just a nominal fee of $20, which eventually dropped down to $10.
I wish we could get a petition going and send it to them voicing how we feel. While I know people have been making mods to get this function on the current phones, this is a time where we need to make HTC step up and do what is right.
If you agree please keep bumping this, it would act as a petition of sorts. Maybe you could even do a poll on this subject??
I called my own wambulance already so I don't need another one...thanks !! =) lol....honestly though, everyone should feel as strongly about this being addressed by HTC as I do.
Petition? why when someone will port it over...plus from my experience with my kaiser...i dont think they care much to petition.....
Or you can just install this mod from this thread, and have most of that functionality like I do now on my Touch Pro
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470164&highlight=stocks
Will it port over? I would prefer to not mess with the ROM in anyway, this is an area that kind of worries me..can't afford to brick my phone...or is this something that would not have bearing on that? I don't know exactly how all this works, but that functionality would surely be ideal. Does HTC really not care about customer service? I have not dealt with them directly for anything yet.

Is this a cooked ROM install that I would have to do or a .CAB that you just run?....Thanks.
I strongly agree that they should have an upgrade for us, but I don't think they really care, this is how they make money, they put out the newest stuff and don't have upgrades for the old stuff so it urges you to buy the new phone
then why not just charge all of us 1st gen owners $10-$20 for the software and allow us to upgrade to it? They would make a ton of cash off doing that, on top of the sales from the new phone. This is exactly what Apple did when they upgraded to the next gen of their phones, it was smart of them to do it and brilliant from a customer relations standpoint.
I guess I could just return my current phone and get something else temporarily until that comes out, since I bought it online and it is not even 30 days old...but I would rather keep this phone if it is possible and just get the functions of the new Touch Flo 3D.
Don't sweat it, when it gets out someone will port it and make it installable with a cab...no worries. HTC really doesn't care much for the end user, they proved that with the Kaiser drivers.
htc does not give a sh*t and frankly i don't care... at the moment they have, IMHO, the best + tweaks phone for me. once i see a better phone somewhere else i will buy that phone.... i just hope this time they hard coded all of the hardware buttons so i can't remap any of them .... @ the person who made that decision.... and i quote
"go fu*k yourself"
**** Cheney
I thought that Diamond TF3D Configurator did a lot of those things. You can use it to remove unused tabs and to re-order them. You can also use it to re-order the programs in the program tab pretty easily. I'm also pretty sure that there are cabs out there that allow you to add some more shortcuts to the program tab. Personally, I don't really like loading more than 9, because scrolling down is a little tricky (it's easy to launch a program in the first 9 by mistake).
Umm...lol, not sure how your post helps any to answer my question about the software suggestion Stevieraveon made. I was trying to find out if this was a "cooked ROM" or just a set of cab files that I could hard reset in case something does not work right.
This is what he suggested to me so I can get more tabs etc..:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470164&highlight=stocks
I like my phone a lot and in most ways it is a step up from my HTC Mogul...but the lack of dedicated hard keys is taking a lot of getting use to, so some extra tabs would help get to those features faster.
Unfortunately not all of us are as comfortable as others when it comes to understanding how to install or deal with cooked ROM's. If it is all .CAB file installs then that I can deal with, no way can I afford to brick a $300+ phone that I just got on a 2 year contract.
I just wanna make my phone as quick and user friendly as I can without worrying about all this "bricking" I hear can happen if a custom ROM install goes bad on you.
Thanks again all....Bruce.
the only thing thats really new is the landscape tf3d has all the tabs now including home screen music and all that it looks like
that alone is awesome but yes of course it will port over
i believe 6.5 requires a windows key too so that might be an issue
We got slide2answer but nothing else from the changes made on the Touch HD, I'm not going to hold out for hope. And just forget about 6.5.
dont even stress it guys we all know someone will port it and probably make it better...i do hear u on htc at least giving the upgrade for 1st gen users but oh well. such is life in business

forget about 6.5? if you look in the roms section 6.5 is already on the touch pro
yeah, either way even if they don't not going to sweat it. I keep hearing that the Palm Pre might be released next month, and that device has really got my interest. If Palm does their applications store right to compete against the iPhone (keeping most applications free-$2) then it really has a chance to be a great phone.
They added the ability for it to support Flash today, also does copy/paste and a whole bunch of other features look promising. The keyboard is not as nice as other devices out there, but setting that aside all the previews for it have been really good so far.
So many choices lol.....anyone know if this is a "cooked ROM"?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470164&highlight=stocks
I think this might do what I am looking for, but if I have to mess with the ROM then I'll skip it...not out to brick my phone if something goes bad with the install.
Thanks all for your replies.
why are you so afraid to flash a rom? theres like 3 steps to it and pretty much impossible to brick it now it makes the phone so much better
Petitioning won't do anything but waste time. HTC will not listen.
I have been looking for a clear set of instructions on it that I am comfortable with is all. If you can tell me where to find a good set of instructions I really have been looking to give this a try. It's not something I have ever done before and I keep seeing people say in their posts that it might brick your phone.
I have been using the PHM Registry Edit program, but only for the most basic of stuff. So far nothing has gone wrong there thankfully. I also have the Advanced Configuration Tool version 3.3 with some of the stock settings changed.
Some of the mods out there look great. I just want 1 page that tells me everything as clearly as possible how to set my phone up for flashing to different ROM's and any additional software I might need.
If I have to get the phone serviced for any reason I will also need the ability to restore back to the stock Sprint HTC Touch Pro ROM. (signed?).
Thanks !! ....Bruce.

You seemed to want to know how to re-organize your TF3D tabs. I gave you a link to an app that allows you to do this. All you need to do is download and install the cab. Try it out, you might like it.

[Android] Motorola Backflip - DON'T BUY, HERE'S WHY!

OK, so I've been using a Kaiser/Tilt with Eclair on it for awhile. I've spent countless hours drooling after the Nexus One. When AT&T finally got the "Backflip" from Motorola, I just couldn't resist. I took the plunge.
I should've known better. I have plenty of AT&T horror stories, and this is the same carrier that wont allow you to tell your Java apps NOT to ask for permission more than once (making Opera mini a PITA but the only usable browser for non-smart-phones).
There is NO option to install applications from untrusted sources. This means anything on your SD card, downloaded from the web or over your wifi at home WILL NOT WORK. Naturally, you also cannot use the "su" command in terminal.
Motoblur is nice I guess, but the uninstallable AT&T paid apps, the limitations of 1.5 firmware (ie: no google navigator, no voice search) and the locked-to-yahoo-search-bar are enough to get me to say NO to any further AT&T abuse.
With the Kaiser's bloatware, they removed/hid apps from you so you wouldn't try to use them and replaced them with their crapware.
AT&T does not know the meaning of "open" and they do not understand Android. You are not buying an Android phone when you buy from AT&T.
You are buying a device LOCKED to a market with a smaller number of applications than the iPhone (I don't use Apple products either ) forced to use a lesser search engine for your most convenient option and subject to losing any application that was once on the market but then removed. You can't install your own apps or even test them on your device. Period.
Also on my first day of using it I got a number of "Force Close" messages including on the built-in applications (ie: Motorola's flavor of the desk clock).
It's decent hardware, it feels pretty zippy to me, but this is exactly why I WONT buy an iPhone.
Screw you, AT&T. I will make sure that everyone I know is properly informed about this crippled device that is nothing like the Android experience is supposed to (expected to!) be.
/endrant phew, going to go breathe for awhile.
EDIT: I will add:
- Set "orientation" on this phone when you tilt it and somehow it gets stuck in one orientation or the other (who knows maybe this one is just me, not seen any other backflips) if you set it back to just when you open/close it it's fine again though
- The desk clock can't be launched manually and is tricky to get to appear trying to get the phone in that perfect angle to display it
- I don't have a separate camera on me right now to show you the menu but to back up with sources:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/1910...n_atandt_not_the_full_android_experience.html
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/121849
Don't buy this phone. Stay away from AT&T, stay away from Motorola (IMO or at least the motorola backflip).
This is pretty horrible.
I have two questions, though.
1) Can you take a screen cap of the Settings > Applications screen so we can see the lack of Unknown Sources option? That'd really help people see the validity of this issue.
2) I hope you have some kind of 30-day money-back guarantee when buying a handset from AT&T like Sprint offers. Otherwise, ouch =/
I haven't tried to install an apk from astro or anything, but i have pushed a few with ADB which seems to work fine. It kinda sucks, but I really hope that we can figure out root access soon! I don't care for blur, but I like android. Hopefully we don't have to wait to long. Here is an ADB guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=643866
I wonder if Apple suddenly took over AT&T because this kind of behaviour is more common to them
... It's not only AT&T who manages to confuse their customers about an OSS... Don't forget who decided to lock down an open software system boot-loader for everyone *cough*Motorola*cough*
Apple made them an offer they could not refuse!

Someone more familiar than I needs to figure out the proper java system call to enable unknown/untrusted sources and then post on this thread the proper at command to execute it via CLI. You wouldn't even need root to do this.

Assuming the software running on the Backflip is the same software they released the source to on opensource.motorola.com, there may be hope of that. I'll dig into it when I get time.
Wow. I am surprised that this was picked up by Gizmodo. Do we have anyone corroborating this? Doesn't this somehow violate Google's terms of service?

Mine too! Just means to spend the couple extra hundred dollars and get an unlocked unbranded one.
I got the Backflip just because I am moving on from my jailbroken iPhone and I wanted something neat and shiny.
I can say that there is a lot of smack talk here, but give these guys a chance here to root the phone and get some things working on it.
It's been two days since the release and I can already say, that I like the phone a hell of a lot more today then I did on Sunday. I've been able to install untrusted sources using the Droid Explorer, a bit of a pain in the ass, but it's okay, considering that if I want Android, then this is the only way to go for now.
But I have faith in someone out there... Someone will figure this out.
I just hope it's within my 30 day return policy.
EDIT: I Installed "GDE" on my device and I am able to use the Google search widget... So that issue is sort of solved...
This may just be my unit but the A2DP doesn't work right, it starts playing music then begins to fast forward whatever you are watching or listening to. Did a hard reset, no luck. Looks like I already need a replacement lol.

Eh; fail on my part. It's mostly a cosmetic fix. I didn't actually test it, but when you click on it, it changes to "Yahoo".
So my bad on that one.
God, I hate Yahoo. Ever since that stupid ass cowboy did that commercial, it's ate away at my soul...
I don't know why...
To think we were all worried about how Verizon was going to cripple android only to have ATT do it instead. At first I was amazed and then I realized that any android phone would have outshown their prized phone...oh well one more reason to love being on T-Mobile. ;-)
I played with a Backflip. My god it's a horrid phone. And yeah, Android is completely locked down, with no way to delete those AT&T apps and no installing off-Market Android Apps out of the box.
I was going to wait to see what AT&T was going to bring to the table, but I'm not holding my breath.
Btw, I noticed that AT&T trained to sell the Backflip pretty hard. Like, seriously, I was looking at phones today, and every other word out of the rep's mouth was that I should buy the Backflip. Thankfully I'm more informed than that. I walked out with an iPhone instead. (Don't grill me, I use a Touch Pro2, I just needed a good phone for my work line >_<)
Help i ****ed up my phone
So i just rooted my g1 to get the nexus one features to it and now all it is doing is foreclosing instead of going to the home screen if anyone can help can you please email me at [email protected] thank you

I really do think though that this is going to end up to be a decent phone.
I know I am a little pro for that comment, just because I bought one. But lets look at every phone that ever comes out. There is always some sort of challenge that we have to overcome.
And; with all the threads I've been reading about this; it looks like it was BOTH AT&T and Motorola that are to blame for locking this phone down. ATT cause they don't want us to install from anything but an "App Store" and Motorola because they don't want their devices used for what "there were not intended to be used for," is the wording I've seen floating around the internet.
But in all seriousness. I am coming from an iPhone 3GS which I had jailbroken. So I am coming from a phone that I had everything and anything on to this, and I am, overall, happy with it. Although it's only been 5 days, I can say I don't think I'll change my mind in the next 25 days.
But that's just my two-cents.

No Reason not to root and remove ATT bloatware and enable sideloading

Well I'm writing this because of the complaints of lagginess and/or crap from AT&T.
While I'm not a dev genius, I do know my way around iPhone OS and WM and Android is coming pretty naturally to me. IF YOU JUST READ THREE THREADS YOU CAN HAVE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PHONE. There. I said it.
Seriously, if you are complaining about it being laggy, its because the ATT crapware likes to turn on for no reason in the background. REMOVE it!
Install Titanium Backup, allow it to update and then go to manage and uninstall ONLY ATT APPS. don't get rid of google apps or **** goes crazy
If you're complaining about not being able to install LauncherPro or easytheter, learn how to sideload! Seriously, you can use adb and droid explorer if you'd like (really simple) or you can edit ONE LINE in your database and get it directly on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728121
If you're wondering how to do all this, just ROOT. It takes 30 seconds, it's longer to reboot the phone than to root it. Just get the update, it does absolutely nothing to your phone, just installs superuser.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725555
I'm just getting pissed because this is supposed to be a poweruser site and lots people here are just bickering about things when they could simply fix them.
I know my account doesn't have many posts, but I've been around (Didn't feel like keeping TyTNic_Dev was fitting considering I haven't had the TyTN for about 4 years now) And while I'll try and contribute what I can, IMO this subforum would be alot cleaner if everyone stopped complaining and kept everything relevent.
Talking about how you "hate the phone, its so laggy need to go back to iPhone" or just "don't understand what all the fuss about Android is" just GTFO, or leach off everyones contributions. It really drags the thread down when people have all that hate and negativity. Especially when a few tweaks and the phone runs like a dream.
I've rooted, enabled sideload, and removed bloatware, as soon as I get all the kinks in my flash plugin, I'll have a phone that is as powerful (or even better) than anything else currently on the market. I suggest you do the same, then you'll probably be singing its praises as well.
ok..phew..
/rant
so yeah, root and fix the phone. you'll be glad you did
Good post. Just to help people maybe throw some links where u say to do each mod.

I dont think this is true. I've never once seen it just start itself up.
But yes, rooting is easy, but there's not a whole bunch of reason to do it quite yet.
Edit- there's also not much reason to NOT do it either.
I agree with you 100%. Like yoursef, im not one to have tons of replies, but ive been following XDA since my Tilt (not tilt 2). I think the issue is that we have a lot of new followers (welcome!) coming over from the Iphone and they are not use to what this board is all about. These arent apps you just install, this is software development/enhancements all in one place. Hopefully when the WIKI is back up (or created rather), there can be a nice "how to" section for everyone to reference.

I just restarted my phone, and there was a huge list of apps that were running right off of startup. A lot were at&t (naviagtor, ect.) and some were not.
EDIT- I know a lot of people are talking abut the lag due to the samsung UI, but I really dont care about the live wallpapers and I have a regular background so I dont get any lag at all. I am excited about the 2.2 update to gain the speed and access to the other 256mb or RAM. That alone will make this device a great phone. I am really enjoying android verses my WiMo devices (tilt 2 was the latest).

If that's true then this is a good reason to do so but I haven't seen that happen I guess.
After I instaled task manager I noticed most att apps would start on there own. I was always looking at what was running to try and save my batt.
Ive never hit the att apps at all since I had phone. After rooting and removing att crap nothing tuns in background execpt what I open.

When you root do you have to manually update to froyo or does it give you the option?

happens to me all the time. random AT&T crap will start on its own
Thanks guys, yeah whenever you start ANY navigator app, att navi will start (its triggered by the gps starting) when you start any music player att music starts (it is triggered by com.google.music(sic))
these little things can be avoided and lets be honest, the stock touchwiz music player is really good. I have copilot so no reason to pay att. Navigation is a top notch free gps too.
the only one I could see is maybe you like mobitv, that is actually pretty decent of an app, but things like allsport, where, ypmobile, all of these can be accomplished using the browser.
I'll edit the post to include the links, but I just feel like when I'd be working on code or something, if someone was whining it wouldn't motivate me.. Why would I wanna program the Captivate (apart form sheer love) for people who'd just complain you know?
I'm messing around with the sdk and what not and I just got me a second Captivate so i'll be doing all sorts of tests to see what it'll take to get stock froyo on it, but i'm still a novice so i'll keep updating everyone and hopefully we can get 2.2 as a community
@V DidDy 210 I like your attitude. I hope more devs like you come around to the captivate scene as I would and the community as well would greatly appreciate it. I know I will. I will try my best to contribute and help with any interesting development on this device.
I have rooted and removed the AT&T and many of the Samsung apps, but that didn't really change anything. If it were just those then owners of the International versions of the Galaxy S wouldn't be having the same issues. I think the problem is much more than AT&T bloatware.

Being a running process and actually consuming resources are two different things and I'm not seeing anything worth making a big deal about since they are just sitting in memory.

What is your problem? Is it laggy? I haven't noticed any lag on mine, I've removed the bloat (all of it) rooted (obviously) added sideloading, installed flash 10 and check all the dbs for any scripts that might still be activating unnecessary scripts.
I haven't found any, and unless I actively run something (widgets or apps) nothing is running on its own. Only the most rudimentary of services run in the background (unless I tell something to) and my phone is 99% lag free. It is laggy at startup while it is parsing through my media files and it is laggy when I have a bunch of apps open (I'm talking around 16-17) otherwise in day to day operation (browsing, phone calls, music listening, watching movies while on the treadmill, etc.) I have no problems.
I'll try and help you, just need more info on whats going on

This is true, but while they are running there they still consume even the smallest amounts of usable memory...unless you like the ATT apps there isn't any real reason to keep them. Even if it uses 1kb of ram...its still 1kb of ram wasted
Excellent post but more importantly.... it seems to be a very necessary post. I loved the site when I had my Hermes, Kaiser, Touch, and other HTC devices ~2006 - 2008 but now that I came back with my Android device, it definitely seems like the tone has changed.
My question its are we all having the same problem? I experience lag, unresponsive touch due to lag also a black screen that hangs when you open a app. If so, I'm rooting right now. Please some one confirm. BTW this its a universal problem with all Samsung galaxy s phone. So I'm inclined to think its the firmware not the att bloatware.

LOL. I thought you were serious for a moment.

Is S7 worth buying?

Seems like every phone has problems and Android itself has endless problems. The Nexus 6P has an LTE bug where you can't receive calls and it hasn't been fixed in months. The OnePlus forums are full of people hating their phones and the latest OTA for Marshmallow bricks some of their phones. I don't know what to buy. There are lots of complaints about the S7 here also. I am coming from BlackBerry and was totally satisfied but there is no way to live in the modern world without an Android phone or iPhone it seems.
Is the S7 still worth buying, all else considered equal?
I guess main problem is Android 6.
Further, you have to worry about Samsung knox, locked bootloader, etc. when you want to root.
But, the device itself is great. Just use another launcher and you will be happy (at least, I am... except for worrying that root may be gone due to updates on day)
Oh, also, I disabled all updates, so no security updates aer installed. That might be a problem too...
I am not sure I want to root. This will be my first Android phone. I need it for work and travelling and it has to work. I know the device itself is great and I really want one. I just don't know if I missed something since now that the phone has been out for a while people are complaining as much about this phone as every other phone
I don't know anything about launchers or Android or anything. How can I get started learning after I buy a phone? Thank you.

If you don't know anything about root, android, whatsoever, you won't have to worry. Just buy the thing and it'll work. That's enough for the average crowd. The non average are reading/posting on xda They want to know the ins and outs of their device. They want control of their device without being restricted by anything or anyone.

Oh I respect that completely. I am a developer and I have played around with phones in the old days, had a hacked Nokia with custom startup etc. As far as this device goes at this point I am too busy with other things and don't expect to play around with it. There is only so much time in a day!
I know you guys are the experts which is why I am asking. As far as Android itself goes, I hate it. It has a worse security track record than Windows and the quality is worse too! They just found the whole disk encryption with Qualcomm chips is broken[1][2][3]. It's one gigantic embarassment after the next with Android.
I want something that's going to work as well as possible given the crappy software environment it has to work with. If it wasn't for you brave guys breaking your phones the rest of us wouldn't have access to anything nearly as good as we have now! Thanks!

Always remember people never go online to write compliments. I personally love this phone. There is also a google+ community where you will get some honest feedback. Most people in that community will be honest about their experience as well as here.

Exploits are found all the time on ios,Windows and a android, basically if it's a system built by humans there's almost always going to be some type of flaw somewhere. As much as this is pretty big one the chances of it actually affecting you are probably nil. I would get the device and enjoy it for what it is, rather than worrying over this and that.

I don't think that's true. There are more fanboys for Samsung phones than people willing to bash something they spent 800 bucks on.
I saw some scary threads here like the one on broken rear camera lenses. The replacements are on ebay by the millions already. I don't understand how companies can put out faulty products and charge so much for them. But silly me, I ordered one yesterday. It hasn't shipped yet. But I'll be unhappy if it has problems. It's supposed to be the best you can get. What else is there?
Hopefully not a complete threadjack
So I am currently running a rooted S4 and am thinking it's time to upgrade. And don't hate me for asking this: Now that we have root available for the S7, is this the phone to get or should I hold out to see what the next Nexus phone actually is? Would like to keep the SD card port that doesn't seem to appear in any of the nexus rumors. Am worried that now the root method is out, it'll be patched before the Nexus release and my choice becomes moot. Thanks.

If I could choose, then I would get a device with 128Gb memory without SD card.
Why? Because google f*cked up Android with SD cards. They just don't get it that we want control over the media on the SD card!
But, I like this S7 because of the camera, display and weather proof (let's try to be careful and don't drop the phone in the toilet please...)

Who else is ready to return the phone if we can't root?

I'm a little conflicted with this as I actually like the v20. Who else is going to be returning the phone if we can't get a root method? I've tried to consider keeping it, even without, but I absolutely hate ads.
For those in the know, how is it looking? What are the prospects? I've kept up with the dev threads and I'm not sure how to judge this. I'm new to the LG dev scene.

What's even worse is that if there is something discovered it seems it will be very close or after the return period in my case. But I guess those are the cards!
the phone hasn't even been officially released yet. honestly you just need to relax a little. we know the bootloader can be unlocked on the t-mobile variant. so hopefully root will soon follow. but seriously you just need to give the devs some time to spend some time with the phone. with that being said even if they aren't able to get root i am still keeping my v20. i love it. way better than when i had the note 7

I'm not worked up. They have all the time in the world to work on it, no rush. I'm the one who is rushed. And I don't expect them to go any faster than they can. I'd be just fine in going back to my Note 5, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. It's nice to have a change. If I could help the devs I would.
Even if it doesnt get rooted, i will keep it, at least for 8 month or more. On ther other hand, i truly hope they manage to root not only Tmobile's variant (I own the tmobile's variant), but also at least 3 or 4 of the other variants. That way we can have more devs interested and joining the LG V20 Wagon . When a device's bootloader is unlocked only for 1 variant and locked for the others and if root is not achieved in the locked variants, then there are significantly less development on the phone, since only the variant able to be rooted will be truely open for developments, and the other devs in other variants would say "Meh" i skip it.
I would love root as well, I've been rooting my phones since the HTC 3G slide days. And along the way I've accumulated many apps that are a must have for me. That said, I think the features and functionality of this phone outweighs those must have apps. I could 'enjoy' this phone without root.
As far as if root with for sure be coming to this device? That's anyone's guess, it could take as long as a few months to acquire a real solution to root. There is also the development aspect of this to consider as well. While we will have people devoted to getting root and attempting to make ROM's/mods, Android N is brand new.
It's a toss up if we'll see root, than it's a question of how much development we'll see once a root solution has been found. So basically one need to ask themselves if attaining root solution is really necessary in keeping this phone. I personally see stock LG very pleasant to play with.

I agree, I would love to see an unlocked bootloader for all carriers. That is the primary reason I am with Tmobile. I can't stand being deprived simple filesystem access to my own device. But in this case, I'd be just fine with just root if the devs don't jump on board. I mean I love flashing custom roms, but this stock rom is great (for once). I just want adaway!!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the Pixel has been rooted yet either. And since there are only two devices out now that have shipped with both Nougat, and the duplicated system partition for background updates, there remains quite of but of work to get SuperSU working.

I'm a little later than that. I think my first root was the HTC Evo. I agree that for once the stock experience here is pretty satisfying. I could deal with it, if I could only get rid of all those ads. I just can't do it. Pop ups and junk everywhere throughout the whole OS. I haven't seen an ad is so long I'm a little shell shocked.
I expected it to be a toss up with Android N. I knew this might happen, but we always hope for the best.

And slim pie, and greenify, and TITANIUM BACKUP (GOD! ) , and a couple of things more. also, i would love for lg to create many themes and then they can keep updating them and make them compatible with future devices so that it doesnt stop just in few months. Also to add more options to the second screen such as display notifications entirely one by one. I wonder if LG has a page to send suggestions and feeback . Yeah Titanium Backup would have been extremely helpful! I find that I didn't install half the backed up apps though, so that's something. I guess I didn't need a lot of that junk. LOL I'm usually first in on Viper4Android as well, but for once I don't think that it is a necessity. I haven't even played with themes yet. Thanks for reminding me. Second screen is surprisingly useful. I love flipping through songs on spotify with the screen off. I also love how you can see the full notification text there sometimes, instead of it being broken up line by line. I do find myself trying to pull down the drawer from there though, even when the phone is in landscape!

I'll probably just crawl back to my Note 5. The s-pen gets stuck sometimes, and the charge port is wonky, but it's like an old friend. The dev community for it seems to have dried up a bit though. But I'm ok using a solid daily driver rom with adaway and viper4android on that phone. I don't need to be a flashaholic anymore.

I couldnt install about 15 apps that required root, now i only have 35 apps (my apps, the others are system apps) Which is why my battery drain seems reasonable LOL i mean, im surprissed it last more than a day given the fact that many of my apps are constantly synchronizing and i leave gps on and do some camera shots and videos, and also am constantly turning it on and off to see notifications and all that, and play music. Today i did all that. And my battery is in 68% . I bet greenify could make it even better. BUT I NEED ADAWAY! I don't want to count. But with more than a dozen albums downloaded from Spotify, all my apps and media, my storage space is great with the stock 64GB and no SD. It's kind of mind blowing. Same here with the battery as well. I've been using it all day, listening to music, surfing the web, texting, youtube, etc. I'm still at 72 percent. It beats the Note 5 for sure.
