[Q] Best Group MMS app? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Something I have noticed with my m8 is that when I am in a mms group chat, it takes a while to download the messages. If I am in a group chat with my friend with an iphone, he receives the texts about 10-20 seconds before I do, I know what app you use makes a different and I am using textra which I love but is there an app that will better handle group chats or is it just something to do with android that is causing this.

Are you all on the same carrier? I would assume it would be a carrier/networking delay initially if you're on different carriers. But I use Handscent SMS for group messaging and haven't had any issues with iPhone or Android users. Might try that to see if it affects the delay. I wouldn't think it would help though.
Also, if the person that's sending the message is on an iPhone as well, then your friend that's on an iPhone is probably receiving it through iMessage, not SMS, so he's definitely going to have less of a delay that way since it's just using data/IM and not the carrier's SMS system.

I experience the same thing on hangouts except my delay is typically longer than 20 seconds. Not massive concern but its embarrassing in front of my iPhone friends

Same carrier and same location and its through group mms not imessage or sms. I used to use hangout and had trouble sending messages and textra seems to do it better so I thought maybe it had to do with the app

[Q] App for Free SMS

Greetings fellow windows phone users,
I have just bought a new windows phone mango device (HTC Titan), and wanted to know if there is any app that uses data for sending and receiving sms.
I am on AT&T and do not have a sms plan, and had to block my incoming and outgoing sms, because my jerk friends couldnt stop increasing my bill by sending me junk sms.
But I do like to have sms chats with my cousins and relatives from time to time.
Does anyone know of an app that uses data plan for sending and RECEIVING free sms? I have tried a couple of apps that uses google voice for doing that, but both were just ONE SIDED i.e. I can send sms to others, but when they REPLY, nothing happens. Has anyone used "GoVoice" before for sending and receiving sms? Am I doing something wrong?
I have heard about jaxtr sms service, but unfortunately they dont have an app for windows mobile
Any suggestions, anyone?
Thanks
Try this: http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-PL/apps/08d825c6-8828-43bb-ba72-6f410c5caaf5
that doesnt work in the US.
Plus I dont understand a word it says
Is there an option to change the language to English?

If you are out of contract with AT&T, tried their pre-pay Go Phone program: $50 for unlimited talk & text. If not, here is a work around that I have used which will give you "free" text.
Here is my work around. I use Google Voice. Set Google Voice to send text to your Hotmail account that you associated with your phone. When someone text to your Google Voice number, it INSTANTLY goes to your Hotmail. Your Windows Phone will receive a notification in the email live tile. You tap on the email tile to read the text and then reply by email. When you reply to that mail on your phone, your recipient will receive a TEXT reply. Voila! Free text. The only drawback is your text number is the Google Voice number, not your phone number.

Hey, thanks for replying. This is a great idea. I dont mind having a different texting number, and this way its actually easy for me, as I can choose who gets it. Actually, I just bought the Titan, so my contract with AT&T just began. Go-Phone is out of question.
I tried looking into it, but couldnt find the settings for texting in my google voice account. Would you mind telling me the steps involved in setting up the account.
In my google voice settings, I only have the option tabs of Phone, Voicemail, Groups, Voicemail Widgets and Billing. Which of these tabs is supposed to have the texting option?
Do I have to activate google voicemail on my cell for this to work, because I am pretty satisfied with the AT&T voicemail service atm.
Thanks
I find it odd that AT&T doesn't let you block SMS from phone numbers. I can do it with Verizon...
Another way you can try is to use AOL Instant Messenger. If you add a contact with "+18145551234" (814 is the example area code I am using) and then unblock them, you can add any SMS number world wide as far as I know, and it doesn't cost a thing. I use it to text my mom from my Grandmothers "dead zone" all of the time.
You can look here at AT&T's site for more info on simply blocking the SMS numbers in question.
Hey there,
Thanks for replying. I know AT&T can block sms coming from a spam number, but in my case I am talking about my friends. I am a very friendly person (I sometimes regret that) and so I have large friend circles (i mean like really huge numbers). And the thing is that this started just as a joke for them. One person told another that I am being charged for sms, and he after doing one sms to me, told another person, and the process repeats. Almost all of my friends did just 2 or less sms to me, the bill on my side was big. So instead of asking AT&T to stop sms from like hundred different numbers, I blocked all incoming and outgoing sms.
Can you elaborate on using AOL instant messenger. I am sorry for asking this, but am new to this Windows Phone and English isnt my first language, so its a little difficult for me to understand.
Thanks

Great! It sounds very attractive.
I have no problem making an SMS application, but it will have to be a paid service. aka, you'll have to pay per msg.

That's weird - I never heard of an operator to charge for incoming SMSs (only outgoing). It's logical that only outgoing calls and SMSs are supposed to be charged, because the incomming ones are already payed by the sender.. (of course, international roaming is a special case..)
About the actual question, in the last 10 years I saw most companies that offered free SMS sending (over Internet) dissapearing - probably it was not effective from a economic point of view, and also for 5 or 6cents a SMS, most people doesn't bother tosearch a free service anymore..
@acidhax
Can you make one application that uses Google voice services to send and receive sms? The app which I am using "GoVoice" is just one sided, that is I can send an sms to someone, but when they reply, I am not getting anything. Can you fix this and make an app that works in two way sms communication?
I do not mind if the whole conversation is in the application instead of the default messaging app. I also dont mind having a different number (my google voice number) for messaging.
Thanks

Arghhhhhh,
Just found out, that if you get a new number, the texting option magically appears in your account.
With the options available, GoVoice app works wonders. Finally free sms.
Hurray!!!
If your friends have iPhones/Androids/Blackberries/WP7s you could get Whatsapp, but you'll need a data plan to use it. It's basically a free texting service, though after the first year you have to pay something like $2-3 dollars per year.
I have heard about it, but as far as I know, its more like a messenger. Other need to have it installed on their devices too for the messages to work. And they are not sms.
Anyways I found what I was looking for, free sms app (GoVoice), which uses google voice for two way communication with others via sms.
Thank you everyone for your valuable input.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been too busy to check back. I see that you have found a way by using an app. To clarify my work around, all you have to do is set your Google Voice account to forward all messages to your Hotmail account. This means that when someone text your Google Voice number, the text is forwarded to your Hotmail. If you keep wifi on in your phone, you will get a live tile notification saying that you have mail. Go into mail to read and reply. Your reply to the text messages will be received by the other person as a text messages. So there is no need for a third party app.

[Q] Hangouts group MMS text is blank when sent

Anyone else experiencing this? Group MMS texts (no pictures) sent out with Hangouts show up on the recipient's phones (N4 and Moto X) as blank pictures. Replies come in just fine for me. I tested out a different messaging app (Textra) and group MMS worked as expected.
I've tried this on two different N5's, both with the ATT Phone APN, and with the same results.
This seems to work fine when sending to iPhones.
I have a different problem with group MMS on hangouts. I start a group with two Iphones using my Nexus 4, and it sends the message as an MMS, but their replies come to me as individual messages. When one of them tried starting a group, his group message came as an individual SMS to me.
I have the same problem as OP. Extremely irritating.
Bump.. This is still happening even with 4.1.1
:/ AT&T ..

[Q] Not Receiving SMS messages through Hangouts

Is anyone else having this problem?
I'm only getting very few messages through when people have told me they've text me, I have a few theories as to why this would be happening, but hoping someone has a solution:
As I've come from an iPhone, their phone is still trying to send as an iMessage
Google hangouts doesn't work properly yet
I've just ported over from O2 to Vodafone (serious mistake) which is causing the problem
If it's the latter I'll have to take the problem up with Vodafone, but just wondered if anyone else was getting a similar issue with Hangouts and normal messaging?
Cheers,
Joel
i can assure you it's 99% most likely that it's an imessage issue. i've gone through the hassle of trying to force a sign off of the imessage service and it's a major pita.
you need to get a hold of an iphone, and turn off the imessage service, it should start defaulting to sms on other people's iphones in a few hours/days, but it will immediately start giving your iphone using friends an error that the imessage can not be sent, they can then tell it to send as an sms, or if they have the option to revert to sms when imessage doesn't work it will do it automatically for them.
imessage is such a horrible system, and not being able to manually log out of it is very very annoying

I'm on KK 4.2 and Hangouts continually doesn't save text messages sent to me. An app called Ghostly SMS and Mighty Text will show me a couple messages every so often that never show up in Hangouts. I noticed Hangouts also has an "Import SMS" option in settings but it doesn't resolve the problem. Have you found a fix for this?

I"m having an issue also. i've never had an iphone so i know thats not the problem..
I started noticing that when I send out group messages to my friends.. i get maybe 60 to 70 % of the responses.. I only know because my wife shows me the messages she received and i'm missing several almost consitantly.. it makes me wonder if i'm missing texts that are sent straight to me.
I thought originally it could have been hangouts.. so i switched to 8SMS.. still continued.. now i'm using the Stock AOSP messaging app and still missing texts..
As far as I know i'm not having issues with calls or missing calls..
i'm praying its just a matter of getting this mysterious 4.4.3 update...

Get Ghostly SMS from the Play Store. It captures all of your sms messages so even if Hangouts or any other app misses a message you'll see the notification from Ghostly. I turn off the sound notification in Ghostly, by the way, so my Nexus 5 doesn't get annoying with beeps. The "Move to Inbox" feature doesn't work on KitKat though
Toggle your default SMS "Account to show SMS in"

My wife had this problem on her N5. Solved it by going to Hangouts>Settings>SMS>"Account to show SMS in". Change it to SMS only account. Click back confirm the missing SMS messages appear. Then go back into Hangouts>Settings>SMS>"Account to show SMS in". Change it back to your gmail account to re-merge the SMS texts with your Hangouts messages.

T-mobile, z3, group texts...

I just got the xperia z3 and am having an issue with group texting, i.e. mms group texts.
It seems as though the z3 will allow outgoing group texts, but incoming group texts come in as individual messages (not part of the conversation). This seems to be an issue with the native texting app. From what i have found online, that is the way the native texting app is. Really sucks for a $630 phone.
So Textra seems to be a good option to help with this. This app does seems to allow group mms messages in normal format. YEA! However, this seem to only work well over the cellular system. Tmobile seems to not allow MMS messages over WIFI. Textra has a specific T-mobile workaround that claims to turn off wifi when sending or receiving MMS messages. This seems to mostly work, however this has intermittently turned off my wifi, and also generates warnings that my calls won't work over wifi.
At work, my cell cell phone signal is poor, but wifi is good. I would like to be able to use wifi for calls as well as group messages.
Any suggestions?

In Textra settings what has worked for me the best is to select the option that says about T-mobile wifi calling fix, not the one that says that will disable the wifi temporarily. I have a d6603 (Unlocked) but it's the same way I have it on my T-Mobile Galaxy S5.
A lot of people at the iPhone forums are having this issue with T-Mobile...yes I have an iPhone don't judge...so yes I think this issue is more of a T-Mobile related issue then a z3 issue
The group mms is a Sony issue. The wifi calling/txting is the Tmobile issue. To get texts they modify the stock msg app, so if youre using another msg app you aren't going to get txt over wifi.

Problems with group texts

Sometimes I can not send out or receive group texts. When I know the group text function is not working, I can usually fix it by a doing a re-set. But, I don't always know the group function is not working. Has anyone discovered a permanent solution to this problem? Thanks.
I get group texts completely out of order from how they were sent or sometimes get a flood of messages after a 10-15 min delay. It all started when I switched to the pixel 2 from my honor 8. I've been using Textra on T-Mobile this whole time. I've even tried using the Android Messenger and it works even worse.
