[Q] Nexus 5 crashed and wont boot - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My Nexus 5 is locked, stock 4.4.4 and I never attempted to root or anything.
I ended a call and it got stuck, so I hard turned it off by holding the power button. Since that it wont boot, no matter what I do.
It doesn't respond to holding just the power button, and I managed a couple of times to get into fastboot, but whatever option I chose there it just turned back off. Now I can't get it into fastboot. When it was in fastboot, it was recognized as "Android", and now isn't recognized at all (because it's turned off). It also doesn't respond to charging.
I am desperate, please help me!
Thanks.

Is it charged?
Just plug in the charger for sometime and try to turn it on..
If above fails, you need to get into fastboot and first take backup of your sdcard using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51694433
If there is no important data on your sdcard, get into stock recovery and factory reset your device from there.
If you can't get into fastboot mode and nothing is accessible, contact Google if you purchased your device from play store or else LG!

The device is charged, it was 90% when it happened. I can't backup it because it isn't recognized as adb device in the cmd.
I managed to get to the fastboot menu again, but if I choose the recovery mode option it just turns off. Is there another way to force reset it to factory settings?

Are the drivers properly installed on your PC?
Had you enabled USB Debugging? (If you remember then good)
If your device is not recognized, then you can't troubleshoot it. If it's recognized, then you can either use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701
Or get into recovery any how and factory reset.
Just plug in your charger and try again
If above fails, you need to connect Google and RMA your device.

will your computer detect your phone at all? maybe you can root it then flash a ROM and keep all of your stuff.
1. How could you do a factory reset if the phone wont start up?
2. Can you get it into bootloader mode by holding VolDown?
3. If so, can you enter recovery? (Reason for asking: on custom recoveries like Clockworkmod and I assume TWRP you can use adb from a computer, if this works in stock recovery it should be easy to pull any file from the sdcard partition)
4. Tried holding powerbutton for 10 or 30 seconds ( I forget...) to force reboot?
5. A battery pull might work, search youtube for "directfix htc one s" and youll find a video how to disconnect battery)
You can factory reset through HBOOT menu, if he can get into it.

1. From the bootloader menu.
2. Yes i can get into the bootloadermenu by holding the volume and powerbutton.
3. Can also enter recovery, in the same bootloader screen, but when i open recovery, i get the green icon with the two arrows arround, but after a while it pops up a red triangle, and after this the phone starts to boot again, with no sucess.
4. Tryed this with no sucess, reboot, but will not turn on.
5. Battery pull will not work on this htc.
I dont care if the phone dont turn on, i can send it to the repair shop, but i would very much like to get the pics out of it before set it to factorysettings, or i send itin for rep.
I have seen programs that can get back deleted pics from a hard drives or memory cards, do you guys think this will work if the phone turns on after i do a factory reset
Took a factory reset today, and downloaded a program to my pc to recover lost data from the phone, but it did not find anything But the phone looks ok now

[Help] Bricked my Nexus what's next? :(

Hi, this situation is kind of strange and I hope it's just the battery and not the whole goddamn phone.
What I'm dealing with at the moment is:
The phone doesn't boot
When plugged onto charger or USB cable it boots but stuck at Google logo after a blink and stays there. Also, Home, Back and other buttons are lighten.
When "forcefully" put into fastboot mode, e.g. after plugging it onto USB and instantly pressing Vol Up + Power it stuck there as well, volume rocker no more response neither does the power button. Also, I notice there are no commands at the end like "USB int" etc we see normally.
Fastboot or ADB returns no device found
Please help. I personally believe it could be due to battery, what do you guys think?
Thank you.
As long as you can see the google logo, your device is not bricked. GIve more useful information; like your computer operating system, the last thing you did before this happened, etc.

Thanks. My OS is Windows 8.1 Update 1. The last thing was to install UPDATE-SuperSU to root so that I can install ROM Manager to update Recovery but the installation was aborted so I attempt to flash it via Fastboot with success. Then, wanted to install SlimKat but it couldn't let me mount USB storage so that I can put the .zip file. I, then stupidly click on install via ADB but didn't know how to go back so I pulled the battery and powered up; used ADP push command to transfer said the file, but again for some reason I had to pull the battery and since then I am in above position.

Put the device in bootloader and plug it into the computer, be patient, my phone is rather slow to get detected sometimes.. (Up to 30 min.) Check your drivers on the computer, try rebooting the boot loader from just pressing the power button (while in boot loader mode)..

Hi, device doesn't go into bootloader without plugging it to computer (I've to press required buttons BEFORE plugging OTG cable). And when it boots in fastboot mode it doesn't let me press any button either. I kept it plugged in for sometime as well when it when it was at Google logo; will try to do the same while in fastboot mode too and let you know. As for drivers, same computer was used before when it was working and it detected just fine immediately (gave me a pain to find the right drivers though - PDANet was a life saver).
EDIT:
I should mention that I broke the OS before this happened by formatting /system folder and wiping other data from CWM recovery - I think, I also rebooted it without flashing the ROM as well.

I recently had to update my drivers on my computer.. after it did an update, my phone wasn't recognized..
Try Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit,.. use the options for "bricked".. do this from the bootloader screen (power/volume +)...
I don't have experience with ODIN, so you'll need to read that forum/threads...

The problem is, even the Toolkit doesn't recognize the device no matter what. Even the keys for ODIN don't work, aren't they Home+VOL+ and Power?
EDIT1:
Kept plugged in for little longer as suggested but it heats up (it's too hot here) so I plugged out. Going to be running it off of Linux and lets see how it goes. :fingers-crossed:
EDIT2:
Tried Adam's UnBrickable method on Linux and even that couldn't find device. But that was to be expected since Adam clearly mentioned in his post that this tool isn't for those who see anything on their screen.
Whelp! Currently I can only see I:\ drive in device manager and that's all under portable devices and that's all. I see the same even in BIOS boot options, it's listed as "Google".
Guess need to close this thread now.

[Resolved] [HELP] Phone not reacting, power button broken

Hi,
I have a problem with my Motorola Moto G4. I bought it 2 months ago and unfortunately the power button broke and I am therefore not able to turn my phone on/off. That is in general not a problem since the device is still under warranty and I will get the phone repaired. The problem is that I want to backup my data, which I am not able to, before getting the device repaired since the workshop will reset the phone.
I am still able to unlock the phone but no apps or windows can be opened (taping on an app icon does not do anything). Dragging down the notification bar is possible and if connected via USB I can still see the status, unfortunately I am not able to change the setting from charging only to data connection. Since the power button is broken I am not able to reboot the device. I tried to use the adb tools to reboot but the device is not authorized and I would need to change that on the phone which I am not able to. Is there any way to reboot the phone or to access the data.
Any help would be really appreciated.
you might be able to try the commands for adb reboot recovery as the phone is booting up - iv never tried it but adb should be working after the moto splash screen (during the boot animation)
Im not sure if it needs authorisation during that stage but if you cant get into recovery and you cant change the usb connection/authorise adb then I cant see any other way to get the data off

If I would drain the battery to "shut down" the phone, would there be a way to turn the phone on without the power button?

with older samsung devices you could use a usb jig to get into download mode without the power button (its a usb cable with some pins crossed you can buy them for only £1 off amazon/ebay)
even if it did work you would still need the power button to select the option to restart phone so the answer is nothing that I can think of

I found some mechanisms to get the phone turned on and I will try them out. I guess I have nothing to lose.
The interesting thing is that my phone is still receiving messages and news (I see them in the notification bar), so things like that are still working but unfortunately new "widows" can't be opened.
Thank you for your help.
I was able to get the phone rebooted and after the restart everything works as it should.
This is what I did:
Drain the battery (using the flash light), once the battery is flat connect the phone to the PC
Press and hold the volume down button until the Fastboot menu appears
Download ADB tools (the minimal version with adb and fastboot is sufficient)
Install the Motorola driver on the PC (I was not aware that I need this, since connecting the phone without the driver being installed and running adb device results in the device being shown)
run fastboot reboot

Screen went black

Hi Everyone,
I bought the Honor View 10 and it was delivered to me on 16.08.18. On 17.08.18 all of a sudden while using the phone, the screen went black. The phone is working though as I called from another number and it was ringing. The screen lights up but it is completely black. Since the seller has a replacement policy, I have already raised a complaint and the phone will be replaced. The issue I have is, all my data is on the phone and I am unable to wipe it. I can't do it via adb as it needs to have the USB debugging option enabled on the phone, which I can't enable now. One method I tried was tying to boot into recovery and assuming that I am pressing the correct buttons and wipe it from there. But this is very hard and I am not sure if I achieved anything or not.
This is what I did:-
1. Since the phone is on and currently stuck on lock screen, I need to enter the pin which I can't. So, I keep on pressing the power button until it reboots.
2. Then I press the volume up button and here I think I am booting into recovery. I think I was in recovery because my phone was connected to my pc and it stopped recognizing it. After this I did some button pressings and not sure if anything happened.
If anyone has a method which I can use to wipe my phone, please share. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the link. I tried it, but since the location on the device was turned off, it is unable to connect to the phone. Here is what more I tried so far:-
I was able to boot into fastboot mode. But none of the commands worked. "fastboot -w", " fastboot erase userdata", "fastboot reboot recovery". My pc is reading the device because when I type " fastboot devices", my device is listed. And the other command that is working is "fastboot reboot".

Another thing you can try, if WiFi is ON on your device, is try to install app to mirror the screen of the phone to your PC, you can do this via PC, open Chrome, log in with same phone's user, get in Play Store and install the app
Sorry but right now I don't remember a good one, but if you search, sure you'll find a good one

Yes location is off on my phone .. I tried that option though but couldn't locate the erase option there .. these were the options:-
1. Ring or Locate
2. Check recent security events for suspicious activity
3. Try calling your phone
4. Sign out on your phone
5. Reach out to your carrier
6. Learn how to take extra steps next time
I tried searching for a mirror app as well. But all the apps I found needed to be opened once on the phone. So, got stuck in that step.
The new replacement phone was ordered today and it might get delivered by Friday. I think I'll visit the service center once before the new phone arrives and this one gets picked up. I though don't think they'll be to erase my phone without replacing the screen. But still I'll give it a shot. Apart from that, if the batter dies and the phone turns off, I'll then try to boot into recovery and wipe from there. Do you know any button combinations which can be used to turn off the phone?

Pixel Stuck in Bootloop, ADB Unauthorized, Bootloader Unlocked

Hello, I recently came on a pixel phone to build and use lineageOS on. Upon rebuilding, I believe I performed adb sync wrong the device and damaged system. After that, my adb keys became unauthorized and I am unable to access the bootloader menu(I press power and volume, but phone boots into Bootloop). I tried the steps to get to bootloader menu, but the phone doesn't power completely off, and when I press the power button it gives me the launch screen saying press power to pause/continue boot, not allowing me to go into bootloader
My bootloop goes like this: Bootloader integrity screen(bootloader unlocked, cannot be verified) --> Google loading screen --> Android recovery. This shows 2 options with the message, "Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt. If you continue to get this message, you may need to perform a factory data reset and erase all user data stored on this device". The two options are to try again or data reset.
I press try again, and the same bootloop ensues, sometimes getting to lineage loading logo, but then back to the same recovery error regardless. If I press the buttons(power and vol up), to go into recovery, it just shows an android with a warning sign above it, giving a message saying "Error!" on the bottom. My adb on the computer shows as unauthorized, so I don't know how I can fix this. Google has said the warranty is expired and cannot do anything to help. Ideas to fix? Thanks for help in advance!

I tried that, but whenever I press any button, the phone is never turning completely off unless it dies. Even after that, it goes to the screen showing the secure boot integrity(Press power to continue/stop boot)
How can I completely shut off the device and restart it? And if system is messed up, will that leave my bootloader intact(I'm assuming so as boot is a different partition?)

Does holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds turn it off? Or if you do that does it appear to turn off and then restart?
If that fails to turn it off, try just holding power and volume down for 5 seconds, and if the screen flashes (goes off and then on) let go of the power button but keep holding volume down and hopefully it goes into Fastboot.
That should work unless you have a dodgy power or volume button. The bootloader is completely separate to the boot partition, and the fact that it's doing anything at all suggests that it's still functioning.
Only other option I can think of is trying ADB commands when it's in recovery mode, e.g. adb reboot bootloader. However, if you have the stock recovery, that may not work.

Thank You!!! It didn't work in the bootloop, so I had to let the phone drain its battery and shut itself off, then I was able to enter the bootloader and reinstall lineage. Thanks so much!

Is ur bootloader unlocked? If so, use twrp to perform a full wipe and install from twrp as well. Of you can't access trwp, and are in a bootloop, do the same thing I did: let the phone lose all it's battery, so it's outta the loop, connect the phone to a charger, then hold power and volume down. This should get you into bootloader mode where you can then use fastboot to flash twrp.
