When I download the recovery from my phone it downloads as a txt file. Do I rename it to recovery.img and push it that way.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
EDIT nevermind I did the S Off method worked perfectly.

Glad you got it working. To answer the question about .txt on the phone, others have reported that using a different browser works for downloading the .img file correctly. I think they used Dolphin browser from the market.
I tried method 2 and method 3 above without success. Trying to go from 2.5.0.1 to 3.0.0.5. Attempts to boot into recovery and then reboots again and boots normally. Suggestions?
Try the ADB method?

No, do not use quotes.

don't flash the 3.0.0.5, you don't need it for GB. the reason I think people have been having so much trouble is that the recovery is overclocked, so some phones can't handle it. same thing goes for the GB rom, if it loops and hangs etc., just flash a capped 691 kernel after the rom and gapps, it *should* work.
OK NOW - TO ALL FUTURE POSTS - PLEASE DON'T, LOL.
AOSP MADE THIS RECOVERY AND IS CONSTANTLY UPDATING IT
3.0.0.5 CAN BE FOUND IN THE 2.3 GINGERBREAD THREAD
INSTALL METHODS CAN BE FOUND ON THE THREAD "READ ME" WIKI,
DIFFERENT VERSIONS CAN BE FOUND ON ROMREPO.INFO

ok Koush did, I know, but the version we are using is tweaked by him.
would you correct me if I said he made his rom, because technincally google MADE it, but he did in fact tweak it,build it,compile it, for the hero.
@aiwetir - 768
Method III worked fine for me. Just follow instructions carefully, and don't forget to do "su" first (lets terminal use root privileges).
I'm curious why RomManager doesn't update the version number. I know I'm using 3.0.0.5 because of the new orange text, but RomManager still shows 2.5.0.1
Anyone?

I currently have Endymion V3.3 rom installed. I went through the revolutionary process to get root. I currently have the revolutionary cwm recovery installed. I tried installing 4EXT updater but when I went to recovery I still got revolutionary cwm recovery. Also I did a backup with this recovery, would I be able to use it when I install 4EXT. Thanks

All you need to do is to
1. Download and install 4EXT Recovery Updater, and launch it.
2. It will ask for root access, which you must grant.
3. After granting it root access you can use it to download and flash 4EXT Recovery. You must have an internet connection for this.
4. The recovery updater app will now download 4EXT Recovery and flash it on your device, replacing the older CWM Recovery you have currently, it's that simple.
No complicated steps... just like running an app.
As for using backups made with 4EXT, yes you will be able to use them. 4EXT is 100% backward compatible with CWM Recovery. Even the location of your backups remains unchanged (in the folder sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Go ahead, try the steps i outlined above. Then let us know if you hit any problem (very unlikely though!)

Hey, i have a bit of trouble...
Just followed your guide to install 4ext recovery but the **** wont work...
I have downloaded the updater apk and installed it, i granted superuser access, then i pressed (in the application) "Online install | upgrade" then chose the latest recovery package and pressed install.
After that has been done it says: "Successfully flashed new recovery. Recovery.img was saved to sdcard/..." but later when i reboot to mine recovery i still have the freakin CWM 2.5.0.3 or something installed... WHAT am i doing wrong..?

See the above posts.... this method works flawlessly. But if for some reason you're unable to update from CWM, just download the attached file, boot into CWM recovery, and flash this zip from within recovery.
Alternately, you can also download the attached Android Flasher and flash the recovery (extract the recovery.img from the zip file) using it. It's a fast and simple method to do it.
I'm feeling extra helpful today, so i'll type out another method... Use fastboot (i assume you know how to set it up, otherwise look at my signature for link) to flash the recovery using the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
DOWNLOADS:
Android Flasher
4EXTRecovery_v2.2.7_RC5_Flashable.zip
The recovery attached is not the touch version, its the most stable non-touch version. Once you are on it, you can later use the Recovery Control app to upgrade to the touch version.
Hope this will solve your problem.
If your phone has the latest HBOOT and unlocked with htcdev.com then you must use the fastboot flash method as exlained above.
But for Revolutionary the regular app method should work just fine.

Word of friendly advice : You shouldn't go around asking for help in forums for other devices as you may end up flashing something that could bugger up your phone... There is a HUGE difference between the Desire S and the Desire. Don't go by the similarity in their names... We're a very helpful bunch over here at the DS forums, but i would kindly request you to take this query to your own community which i'm sure will help you sort it out. (Or grab a Desire S and start roaming these lands!! ) - just kidding.
Better still, why not PM madmaxx82 and ask the creator himself regarding 4EXT issues.

First I would download a rom and put it on the sdcard (as well as gapps for cm7), then you put it in download mode, hook it up to your computer, open the mobile partition and rename the recovery something like recovery.bak, then put it CWM and make sure its named reovery make sure that it has the .img extension. After that boot into CWM volume buttons and power button and go to backup and restore and backup. Then do a wipe and flash one of the roms.

It shouldn't be a bad file... But if you are installing a custom rom then you don't even have to download and use gingerbreak, since the bootloader is unlocked and all the custom roms already have root permission.

Also when you say make sure the recovery file has the .img extension do you mean I should rename the file recovery.img or just leave it as recovery because when I go to the properties of the file it does say file type is .img Also should I unzip it? Yea you should just have to put CWM mod into the mobile partition by booting into download mode. And don't rename it if it already has the .img file extension. Yes you have to unzip it, or just take the recovery file out and put it in the mobile partition don't put the whole zip there. And questions are fine. And just rooting the triumph is as easy as downloading and installing gingerbreak and rooting it so it's easy to root, it's just installing a custom rom that gets a little more difficult, but is still failry easy. But like I said if your installing a custom rom there's no need to root it.

Every time I try to buy CWM it dosent seem to support my phone. Which version of CWM did you install?
Device using Xda Premium
Here is a tutorial for fastboot flashing the new CWM Touch Recovery .
Download the zip file attached and extract it anywhere .
Your phone needs to be in debugging mode and you need the lastest usb drivers instaled . ( HTC Sync )
Step 1 : Run Start Here.bat , a comand promt window will open.
Step 2 : Type in "adb reboot bootloader" . <This works on every rom , it will reboot in fastboot mod.>
Step 3 : After the phone rebooted in fastboot , type in "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-saga.img" .
Step 4 : You have your Touch Recovery flashed.
Any screenshot please!

just flashed but still used the volume keys to scroll like a plonker lol cheers for upload
Did not flashed but just watched a video on youtube.
Seems buggy and not much responsive. Also I dislike (a lot) the endless NO's in the confirmation menu. Seem poor in terms of options compared to 4*** Recovery Touch as well.
What video on youtube ?
Please give us a link
I actually just installed it, using above. I don't feel any lag though. One thing that I don't like is that font is kinda over sized. All in all it's great compared to the regular CWM.

I have install 5.8.1.5 on my HTC desire, and is all working fine, except for one issue that I am not sure if it is a feature or a bug.
When I power the phone down, and then plug in the charging cable the phone immediately boots into recovery.
Is this meant to happen, as it did not do this on any other previous versions.
This tool will root you nexus 7 install su or super su and ClockWorkMod recovery!!
i already developed a similar tool for the nexus s and galaxy nexus, this tool is based on the same code with few modifications.it should root your device in few minutes,so give it a spin and tell me how it goes

Extract the downloaded zip file on your pc,install the drivers available in the "drivers" folder if you don't have them already installed, after installing the drivers run the file called "root.exe" to root your device.

Well I am impressed. I thought for sure I would be seeing it AFTER it was shipped.
Good job!
also do i need android sdk installed for this toolkit to work?
If you have an android device, installing the android sdk or not should not be a question. It's always recommended having it on your PC.
Darn, you beat me to it.
Hrm...there are a lot of ways you could improve this.
This does unlock your device but it didn't root it. I tried Super USer & SuperSU option & both didn't root my device. Even though the dialog box says your device is rooted but it didn't root. My device would stay in fastboot screen forever & I would have to do a hard reboot (hold on to the power button). For root, I had to do "adb reboot recovery" & flash the SU zip file.
Thanks for your work!

well that's weird,it should work unless their is a problem with the recovery am using (it's not booting or flashing),can you check please if the su you are using (superuser or supersu) is getting pushed to your tab ? you should see it in your file manager in /sdcard/,from what you said i see that the recovery flashed but it didn't boot this why you had to boot it manually and flash su.(note that i don't have the nexus 7 so i didn't test this completely,i tested this on a nexus s by replacing the recovery with a nexus s one to assure their nothing wrong with the script)
also can anyone confirm this issue ? and if anybody rooted successfully with this please confirm, thanks
Whoooooo... Already there is a Way to root the Nexus 7!? :what:

well that solved a part of the thing, can you try something for me ? take the recovery from the tool folder and try using this command with fastboot while you are in the bootloader (you can get there using 'adb reboot bootloader' ) use this command to boot the recovery 'fastboot boot cwm.img' and tell me what happens, btw have you tried re-running the tool ?
could you please try it ? thanks in advance
This worked PERFECTLY! As long as one follows the directions... it should work just fine. I would love to give a donation for your time. Thanks again!!!! Now to get OTG working.
UPDATE: Spoke too soon. Root/CWM didn't stick. Finished the process using the info on this post: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28585-cwmeasyroot-nexus-7/
I'm still very grateful because I wasn't able to get the phone unlocked before using this tool. Thanks again!
