Why does the M8 get much better battery life than the Nexus 5? Its battery is only 300 mAh larger and if anything, the Boomsound speakers, higher CPU clock speed and Sense 6 should sap some battery out of it. There must be something in the kernel that allows it to have such great battery life.

HTC uses tweaks, tricks and etc to make the battery more efficient

But yes, the M8 far exceeds the N5 in battery. My M8 is setup the exact same (obviously keeping the M8's Dt2W feature enabled ) and it's average screen on time beats the N5 by 2 and a half hours.
But yes the battery is a bit bigger.... And yes, they must have made some things more cpu/battery efficient.
Its not because of tweaks OEMs tend to want things to be more stable and it to have better battery life but google doesn't really care google is more release it and create more bugs than they fix and if it weren't for our great custom ROM and kernel developers we would be stuck with google screwed up Roms

Then overclocking the Nexus 5 to 2.5 should help. Anandtech states that because tasks complete quicker, the CPU can drop to lower speeds quicker and save battery life. A dev should look into what optimizations HTC might have implemented into the M8. I would love to but I don't have any experience in that area.

I am a bit concerned about the battery life of the upcoming htc. The first reviews I have read about it on german blogs speak from 12 to 15 hours battery life under medium to heavy usage. Even though, one needs to remain cautious with these numbers as the software is not finalized, I wouldn't expect these to double when final.
The Incredible S has a quite satisfying battery life according to users experience. But the Sensation has a bigger screen, higher resolution, a full load of 3D effects and almost the same battery. I fear the battery life will be insufficient in that case, even though dual core is supposed to consume a little less.
Samsung has built a slightly bigger battery on his GSII and people seem to experience a very good battery life. But Amoled doesn't drain the battery when black is displayed and the whole UI has been designed in black for this purpose. So the Sensation will probably not be able to achieve such an autonomy.
Hopefully it will still go through the day under heavy usage. Otherwise I might gonna settle for incredible s instead.
Has anyone read other numbers somewhere?

This is how I see it. Multi-core cpu's theoretically are more power efficient. You spread work over both cores, if software is optimized, to allow for less "strain" on the cpu. From what I can tell they are "optimizing" their Sense UI to run on both cores which efficiently manages the amount of power is being used. This now gives you less power draw hence power is saved. The battery isn't as big as some devices, but in my honest opinion I believe you will get a little more than 12-15 but probably won't get up to double that. This is all based off of my own conclusions after reading several articles. I may be wrong and if you need to correct me feel free. =) All I will say is you probably won't have to worry about battery issues.
Im running Viper XL and the reason i flashed it is because i heard it has above average battery life, but im getting maybe 10-13 hrs max. I've heard cases of 24 hr battery life, and I cant seem to achieve it. I am running Beast Mode Kernel and have the powersave governor. I am running Stock CPU frequency and have one core active. Am I missing something, because i got better battery life on paranoid android which kind of suprised me.
You really have to drill down on the tweaking and settings. Took me a bit to get what I wanted as well. I completely shut off Google Now, you can toggle off LTE and surprisingly, I raised my min cpu frequency to 594 and ondemand. Shut off HTC powersaver as well. Try a reboot after you tweak up all your settings. I think battery life was better on 2.4.1 but it's pretty well on 3.1 too.

I'm assuming you're running ViperXL 3.1. In that case, I'm surprised you're seeing such poor battery life. But, usage and settings are everything. Things like Google Now and GPS are major battery hogs. Facebook, Google+ and other push applications can also hamper battery life. Check your background sync frequencies! How long is your screen running? At what brightness? etc.
That being said, what strikes me is your kernel. You should not be using Beat Mode Kernel (last I checked it's not even optimized for the latest android version). I recommend you use the stock ViperXL kernel or Elemental v1.5.
I've ran ViperXL 3.1 yesterday with elemental v1.5 for more than 24 hours, 3 hours screen time while syncing 3 e-mail accounts. YMMV but with proper set up it's definitely possible.

Alright, thanks for the information on the kernel, its a shame because i heard good about it. But as my screen time i run low brightness and im pretty heavy on texting, I used LTE for about 40 mins total today. can you tell me the way you disabled google now? I've been tweaking the settings a bit and i guess i just havent found my sweet spot.
Edit: And im running 2.4.1 actually sorry should of put that in first post.

Battery life is a very elusive thing. There are simply too many variables. For every ROM, radio, etc. where people will say they have much better battery life, you will almost certainly find others that have worse. Its just a fact of life with modding phones.
I've gotten about a day and a half on a single charge ever since the phone was released, and over 48 hours with later firmware versions (stock and custom ROMs) as of 2.2X and newer. Some folks can't even get through a half a day.

CleanRom 5.1 might get a little better, but I've had about the same battery life using Viper XL 3.1. A lot of the other things to look at are certain apps that seem to cause a lot of drain (depending on options). The most frequently mentioned are: Google Now, Facebook, and Maps. Other than that, lower brightness and shutting off LTE are the next biggest contenders.
I'm using current venomxl Rom with elemental kernel (all default other than max 1.5ghz and flu overclock off) and getting what I feel are amazing results on battery life. On phones of the past, aosp style roms pulled better battery life, but I saw here in the forums people were getting better battery life with sense roms? Is that true? Would be nice to hear what Rom/kernel combos others are using and what kind of battery life you are getting.
Put the picture in your public folder. Right click on the picture and click copy public link, or something to that effect then paste the link in your thread.
In any case, the only things you could do to get even better battery would be to undervolt your processor and maybe underclock as well. Some phones become unstable however and while I noticed the general ui and most apps run fine with a clock speed of about 1.2ghz, some, more CPU intensive apps do lag a bit. You can also disable radios when not in use. I actually use juice defender to do this for me automatically, which is pretty handy though not everyone likes the idea of having an app do that for you.
Last but not least, if your radio signal seems low most of the time, you can try flashing different radios to give you a better signal which will, in turn, increase your battery life.
Hope this helps, maybe others have had different experiences?

And this holds up damn well in terms of battery life. Never used elemental for long though so not sure if it's better or worse.
*edit* I forgot to add, you can also turn off fastboot. Your phone will take longer to power on but saves some battery life.

Such reports are often just anecdotal and very subjective. Like you, I've also seen people claim better life on AOSP or certain ROMs on various devices, but never really experienced it in any consistent or meaningful way. Battery life often has more to do with the radio and reception in your specific care, than anything. Sure, various ROMs on various devices may have some subtle difference in battery life. But unless you are very methodical and scientific about comparing them, there are just too many variables involved, and you are often just left with subjective reports and placebo effects.
Can't open your pic. But if you are satisfied with the battery life (enough to call it "amazing"), I'd just go with the ROM that has the features you like the best, and leave well enough alone.

It will depend of what you will do with your phone?
The battery life is mainly on the user side, it's not x rom or y rom that will give you better or worse battery life (unless a big issue in the rom, but... or sometimes it's the Gapps that drain more than usual it's right). If you have a bad signal or a rogue app that give you a ton of wackelocks so higher battery drain, whatever the rom or the kernel you will use it will be always the same thing.

To add to what they said though, certain Kernels with certain Roms can HELP with battery life but it all boils down to how the user uses it. I can tell you that with my same usage on KitKat and Cyanogenmod 11 (CM11), I get better battery life out of CM11. I recorded about a 4 hour longer battery life on CM11 as opposed to default KitKat that comes on the device.
You should look into CM11, it's a cleaner, more effecient, more customizable version of KitKat.

Underclocked, for the Nexus 5 , I never saw this, have you a link?
All Nexus 5 are clocked at max 2,26 Ghz, nothing less... It seems that there is different variants of the S800 (clocked at 2,4/2,5 Ghz) but the S800 in the Nexus 5 it's 2,26 Ghz (MSM8974AA).

I have no issues with battery life ... I consistently get 14-20 hours of use with 3-5 hours of screen time or 2-3 hours of screen with 1-2 hours of voice.
Auto brightness, GPS on, nothing special.

I've been using a V20 for several months now and I'm really enjoying the many features and flagship-grade hardware it offers. However, it has a lot of problems in terms of design. The V20 runs REALLY hot, and all that heat comes with an enormous power consumption (most figures for stock SOT, including my own, are around four hours.)
I've had a few ideas of my own for correcting LG's mistakes, and I'm wondering what all of your experiences are.
Underclocking the processor: The 820 is a fast, yet power-hungry and hot, processor. Underclocking it would trade off performance in favor of cooler phone and more battery life. Has anyone tried modifying the stock CPU governor or in any way messing with the clocks? I've experimented with LKT but didn't really notice any significant improvement.
Undervolting the processor: I'm not sure about how feasible this is on Android devices. Undervolting the processor would increase battery life and cool the phone at the expense of stability. Anyone find that the CPU is running at an necessarily high voltage?
Reducing Screen Resolution/Framerate: The V20 uses a 1440p display. With its screen size, most of the time this isn't necessary. Are there any tools to automatically reduce resolution when not playing back fullscreen 1440p content? Has anyone tried one, and what are the effects?
Aftermarket batteries: I've been using a 10500mAh extended battery. While it brings SOT up to usable levels, it's very heavy (and has over the course of a month or two decayed to only around 7Ah.) What's the general opinion on these?
Thermal pasting: Repasting or using at thermal pad has been a very common procedure for this device. For those who have done this, what kind of objective analysis of its effects can you providef?

You did not mention what variant, most of the issues you mentioned can be rectified by flashing a custom rom and kernel

There is also the almighty...AKT (Advanced Kernel Tweaks Mod you can flash. Use the 820 selection.

Although LKT and AKT do have some advantages, they didn't give me much more Screen On Time - so I removed them. Have you gotten a significant more amount of SOT? If so, what settings?

I can get around 10hrs sot (depending) using Xana extreme battery. That's the one I'm currently on.
Have a 4200 mAh battery (reg size)

It is hard to tell. Alot of placebo mods out there. I also put zram at zero and knocked my entropy to 2048 for write. I'm still learning and tweaking tho.
Going along with this, which is better: AKT or NFS-Injector?
I would propose that most custom ROMs are probably placebo when it comes to battery life. Very few mention changing anything related to CPU governor, resolution, etc. all of which are the main factors in power consumption (running in Doze 5% more of the time isn't going to affect SOT, for example, which is the only metric that really matters.)
It doesn't help that LG's display technology leaves much to be desired.
Guys, order a Perfine 4100mah battery in Ali....ess and be happy. Better than that 10000mah ugly fat battery cases. SoT about 7 hours. And if that's not enough for one whole day you are facing other problems lol..

Advanced Interactive Governor guide for LG V20?
I have seen the "Advanced Interactive Governor" tweaks elsewhere on here for other phones, but it looks like some of it may be able to be used on the LG V20.
(Links to a few of them will be at the bottom for reference.)
I have calculated the frequencies for both CPU's on the T-Mobile variant, the H918, for both maximal efficient load, and minimal efficient load, according to the math in those articles. If anyone would like to try this on an LG V20 with me and help me work out specifics for this phone, it would probably speed up the process quite a bit, and I could share what I have so far.

In that case: I am facing other problems.
For some reason this is currently getting me only about 2 hours SOT on a used V20 I just bought. Battery capacity seems good according to accubattery.
