[Q] Looking for a alternative to the built-in tether app - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, I am trying to find a wifi tether app to use instead of the one which came with my ROM (in signature) as it lacks major functionality.
When i was back on touchwiz, access control was built in. This app does not have it. Could anyone recommend an app for this purpose?
From my signature you can see I am rooted
More functionality>good looking GUI
Any suggestions are appreciated

[Q] Hardware required for Android Market access?

I know there are certain requirements such as having a 3G radio and camera that google requires for market access. At least, that's what I've read. My question is how are things like the wifi only Galaxy Tab going to access it? Is it going to be packing a 3G radio, but just not activated sort of like how the FM radio shipped in the nexus but wasnt activated out of the box?
I am exploring this question because NOOKcolor is launching this month and runs a skin on top of android2.1. I'm hoping it gets rooted with cyanogen on it because that would be awesome on a $250 tablet. But the question remains...would it be able to access the market? Can the 'hardware requirements' be bypassed by any means on a rooted device?
TIA
Lots of devices run android and don't have a 3g radio and only wifi. They're mostly mp3 players but they can access the market as far as I've seen. It should be possible for the NOOKcolor to be able to reach the market. I don't know for sure though, I've been wrong before.

interesting
To access Market there is no hardware requirement. You just need a few apks. And internet connection.

[Q] Need help with tethering MyTouch 3G GPS to Gtab?

Hello,
Thanks to all the great folks here on this forum I have modded my Gtab and I am really loving the experience.
I am currently running TnT Lite 2.4 and find it very stable. I did the Market fix that allows most os the apps to show up. Still using the old Market interface which accurately shows my downloaded and purchased apps. I have installed ADWlauncher EX and not looked back.
Since buying my Gtab I have rooted my MyTouch 3g 1.2 and implemented Barnacle to create an ad hoc wifi hotspot that works very well with my Gtab.
I read somewhere here that somebody was able to connect their phone GPS to the Gtab through the use of a combination of shareGPS and BlueGPS. I can't seem to find the shareGPS application anywhere on the Market with my phone or the Gtab. Is this due to the fact that my phone is still an Android 1.6 phone? If possible can someone point me to the sharegps apk file that would work on my phone?

[Q] Using hosts.allow and hosts.deny

I'm contemplating getting my 14yo daughter an Android phone for xmas. I want to be able to restrict internet access at the OS level. I've looked into the parental control apps but all of the ones I looked at are pretty easy to circumvent. I figure using hosts.allow and hosts.deny is a better solution (i.e. hopefully take her longer to figure out) but from what I can determine, Android by default doesn't use these files.
Does anyone know of a ROM or kernel that does use these files a la conventional linux?
If not, what are recommendations for restricting internet access?

[Q] Camera access while bypassing phone security

What I want: I want to access my camera without unlocking my phones security. Occasionally you want to take a quick camera shot but this is easy to do quick when there's a telephone security in place. I think iPhones have this feature, but I also think I've seen it on the Xperia S.
What I have: My telephone is an HTC Sensation, rooted s-off and the like. I'm currently on a Sense based ROM (though Sense is stripped and the experience is basic Android ICS like): HyperNonSense. I own WidgetLocker, and I can place a shortcut to the camera but then I'm still bugged with the security in place.
What I don't want: I don't want to disable my phones security.
What I have done: I've searched a lot, seriously a lot, but have not find a satisfying solution. I did find two solutions I did not like or could not test:
Solution 1: This solution says it is possible to achieve this using a (1*1) widget acting as the camera. I, however, have not found such a widget.
Solution 2: Soution 2 requires Tasker, however I don't feel like buying this solution 1) for only this purpose and 2) when I'm not even sure this solution still works.
So the question: Does anyone know if and how I can achieve what I want: access to my camera to take a quick pic without unlocking my android device's security?
Edit: argh... not sure if this is the right subforum
Not sure if it will work have u tried using desktop Visualizer to make a widget/icon to link to camera ?

Although I kinda hate myself for not finding that application myself to test this, it also did not work as I had hoped it would. I doubt whether the "widget approach" even would work. Thanks for the input though.

I know this is an old post, but has anyone been able to achieve this?
I came across Solution 2 mentioned in the original post (using Tasker and Widget Locker), but have not been able to import the profile at all.. and the scripting is a lil too complicated for me to understand.

I was able to import the profile, but it seems it still needs a task which is not defined on the profile.

[Q] Rooted JB tethering question - Moved from General forum

So I have spent the last 2-3 days combing every respectable forum on the web and can't find an answer to this.
I did the kies update to 4.1.2 and then rooted with SuperuserSU. Now I need to tether. I tried freezing the TetheringProvision 4.06.30 but that didn't work like it did with the Tethering Manager in GB and ICS.
Can someone advise what the issue is?
I would appreciate any assistance you can give.
I too was looking for a solution. I tried freezing like you did, and that obviously didn't work. I tried the WiFi Tether app (from google code) and while it does create an AP, none of my devices/computers could actually authenticate with it. FoxFi didn't work either, but I did find Easy Wireless Tether (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigwhiteplanet.tetheringfree) - there's an Ad Free PRO version - which works great. If you have adaway or some other ad blocker, the ads aren't so much a problem and you can get tethering back. I know it's not ideal, but until a solution is found, I think this is an ample alternative.
Thanks for that. I will check out the Easy Wireless Tether and let you know how that works.
The easy wifi tether doesn't work on mine...any other suggestions? It doesn't show up on my tablet as an option for a network.
